Ferroelectric HfO2-based materials hold great potential for the widespread integration of ferroelectricity into modern electronics due to their compatibility with existing Si technology. Earlier work indicated that a nanometre grain size was crucial for the stabilization of the ferroelectric phase. This constraint, associated with a high density of structural defects, obscures an insight into the intrinsic ferroelectricity of HfO2-based materials. Here we demonstrate that stable and enhanced polarization can be achieved in epitaxial HfO2 films with a high degree of structural order (crystallinity). An out-of-plane polarization value of 50 µC cm-2 has been observed at room temperature in Y-doped HfO2(111) epitaxial thin films, with an estimated full value of intrinsic polarization of 64 µC cm-2, which is in close agreement with density functional theory calculations. The crystal structure of films reveals the Pca21 orthorhombic phase with small rhombohedral distortion, underlining the role of the structural constraint in stabilizing the ferroelectric phase. Our results suggest that it could be possible to exploit the intrinsic ferroelectricity of HfO2-based materials, optimizing their performance in device applications.

Intrinsic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and the mechanism of antiperovskite Ni3 In1-x Cux N bulk cubic particles and multi-crystalline nanoplates are thoroughly investigated. Stoichiometric Ni3 In0.6 Cu0.4 N reaches the best HER performance, with an overpotential of 102 mV in its multi-crystalline nanoplates obtained from the LDH-derived method, and 143 mV in its bulk cubic particles from the citric method. DFT calculation reveals that Ni-In or Ni-Cu paired on the (100) plane serve as primary active sites. The Ni-Cu pair exhibits stronger OH* and H* affinity that correspondingly reduce OH* and H* adsorption free energy. Introducing specific amounts of the Ni-Cu pair, that is In:Cu = 0.6:0.4 in Ni3 In0.6 Cu0.4 N, can optimize OH* and H* adsorption free energy to facilitate water dissociation in the HER process, while avoiding OH* adsorption getting too strong to block active sites. Besides, Ni3 In0.6 Cu0.4 N turns the water adsorption step spontaneous, which may be attributed to the shifted d-band center and polarizing effect from surface In-Cu charge distribution. This work expands the scope for material design in an antiperovskite system by tailoring the chemical components and morphology for optimal reaction free energy and performance.

Magneto-optical (MO) coupling incorporates photon-induced change of magnetic polarization that can be adopted in ultrafast switching, optical isolators, mode convertors, and optical data storage components for advanced optical integrated circuits. However, integrating plasmonic, magnetic, and dielectric properties in one single material system poses challenges since one natural material can hardly possess all these functionalities. Here, co-deposition of a three-phase heterostructure composed of a durable conductive nitride matrix with embedded core-shell vertically aligned nanopillars, is demonstrated. The unique coupling between ferromagnetic NiO core and atomically sharp plasmonic Au shell enables strong MO activity out-of-plane at room temperature. Further, a template growth process is applied, which significantly enhances the ordering of the nanopillar array. The ordered nanostructure offers two schemes of spin polarization which result in stronger antisymmetry of Kerr rotation. The presented complex hybrid metamaterial platform with strong magnetic and optical anisotropies is promising for tunable and modulated all-optical-based nanodevices.

BACKGROUND: Pretreatment drug resistance (PDR) can limit the effectiveness of HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of PDR among HIV-positive individuals that initiated antiretroviral therapy in 2014-2020 in southwestern China. METHODS: Consecutive cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Qinzhou, Guangxi. We obtained blood samples from individuals who were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2014-2020. PDR and genetic networks analyses were performed by HIV-1 pol sequences using the Stanford HIV-database algorithm and HIV-TRACE, respectively. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the potential factors associated with PDR. RESULTS: In total, 3236 eligible HIV-positive individuals were included. The overall prevalence of PDR was 6.0% (194/3236). The PDR frequency to NNRTI (3.3%) was much higher than that of NRTI (1.7%, p < 0.001) and PI (1.2%, p < 0.001). A multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that PDR was significantly higher among individuals aged 18-29 (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.79, 95% CI 1.28-2.50) or 30-49 (aOR: 2.82, 95% CI 1.73-4.82), and harboring CRF08_BC (aOR: 3.23, 95% CI 1.58-6.59). A total of 1429 (43.8%) sequences were linked forming transmission clusters ranging in size from 2 to 119 individuals. Twenty-two individuals in 10 clusters had the same drug resistant mutations (DRMs), mostly to NNRTIs (50%, 5/10). CONCLUSIONS: The overall prevalence of PDR was medium, numerous cases of the same DRMs among genetically linked individuals in networks further illustrated the importance of surveillance studies for mitigating PDR.

Metal-free plasmonic metamaterials with wide-range tunable optical properties are highly desired for various components in future integrated optical devices. Designing a ceramic-ceramic hybrid metamaterial has been theoretically proposed as a solution to this critical optical material demand. However, the processing of such all-ceramic metamaterials is challenging due to difficulties in integrating two very dissimilar ceramic phases as one hybrid system. In this work, an oxide-nitride hybrid metamaterial combining two highly dissimilar ceramic phases, i.e., semiconducting weak ferromagnetic NiO nanorods and conductive plasmonic TiN matrix, has been successfully integrated as a unique vertically aligned nanocomposite form. Highly anisotropic optical properties such as hyperbolic dispersions and strong magneto-optical coupling have been demonstrated under room temperature. The novel functionalities presented show the strong potentials of this new ceramic-ceramic hybrid thin film platform and its future applications in next-generation nanophotonics and magneto-optical integrated devices without the lossy metallic components.

RESUMO

Quinoline and quinazoline alkaloids, two important classes of N-based heterocyclic compounds, have attracted tremendous attention from researchers worldwide since the 19th century. Over the past 200 years, many compounds from these two classes were isolated from natural sources, and most of them and their modified analogs possess significant bioactivities. Quinine and camptothecin are two of the most famous and important quinoline alkaloids, and their discoveries opened new areas in antimalarial and anticancer drug development, respectively. In this review, we survey the literature on bioactive alkaloids from these two classes and highlight research achievements prior to the year 2008 (Part I). Over 200 molecules with a broad range of bioactivities, including antitumor, antimalarial, antibacterial and antifungal, antiparasitic and insecticidal, antiviral, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, herbicidal, antioxidant and other activities, were reviewed. This survey should provide new clues or possibilities for the discovery of new and better drugs from the original naturally occurring quinoline and quinazoline alkaloids.

To follow-up on our prior Part I review, this Part II review summarizes and provides updated literature on novel quinoline and quinazoline alkaloids isolated during the period of 2009-2016, together with the biological activity and the mechanisms of action of these classes of natural products. Over 200 molecules with a broad range of biological activities, including antitumor, antiparasitic and insecticidal, antibacterial and antifungal, cardioprotective, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-asthma, antitussive, and other activities, are discussed. This survey should provide new clues or possibilities for the discovery of new and better drugs from the original naturally occurring quinoline and quinazoline alkaloids.

To tune the magnetic properties of hexagonal ferrites, a family of magnetoelectric multiferroic materials, by atomic-scale structural engineering, we studied the effect of structural distortion on the magnetic ordering temperature (T_{N}) in these materials. Using the symmetry analysis, we show that unlike most antiferromagnetic rare-earth transition-metal perovskites, a larger structural distortion leads to a higher T_{N} in hexagonal ferrites and manganites, because the K_{3} structural distortion induces the three-dimensional magnetic ordering, which is forbidden in the undistorted structure by symmetry. We also revealed a near-linear relation between T_{N} and the tolerance factor and a power-law relation between T_{N} and the K_{3} distortion amplitude. Following the analysis, a record-high T_{N} (185 K) among hexagonal ferrites was predicted in hexagonal ScFeO_{3} and experimentally verified in epitaxially stabilized films. These results add to the paradigm of spin-lattice coupling in antiferromagnetic oxides and suggests further tunability of hexagonal ferrites if more lattice distortion can be achieved.

PURPOSE: Mangiferin is a naturally occurring glucosylxanthone with beneficial effects on glucose and lipid homeostasis. This study investigates the potential therapeutic effect of Mangiferin in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) and whether it contributes to regulating insulin action in the endothelium. METHODS: Palmitate challenge evoked ROS-associated endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in PVAT. The conditioned medium from PA-stimulated PVAT was prepared to induce endothelial insulin resistance, and improved endothelium-dependent vasodilation in response to insulin was detected in vitro and in vivo. RESULTS: Mangiferin treatment enhanced LKB1-dependent AMPK activity and suppressed ER stress with downregulation of TXNIP induction, leading to the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation evidenced by attenuated NLRP3 and cleaved caspase-1 expression as well as reduced IL-1ß secretion. Moreover, Mangiferin restored insulin-mediated Akt and eNOS phosphorylations with increased NO production, immunohistochemistry examination of adipocytes, and endothelial tissue in high-fat diet-fed mice also showed that oral administration of Mangiferin inhibited ER stress and NLRP3 induction in PVAT, and then effectively prevented insulin resistance in the vessel endothelium. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results revealed that Mangiferin suppressed ER stress-associated NLRP3 inflammasome activation in PVAT through regulation of AMPK activity, which prevented endothelial insulin resistance. These findings suggested that the amelioration of PVAT dysfunction may be a therapeutic strategy for the prevention of endothelial insulin resistance.

The molecular mechanism underlying metastasis of chondrosarcoma (CS) remains unclarified. Here, we show that matrix metalloproteinase-26 (MMP26) level is significantly higher in the resected CS than in the adjacent healthy chondral tissue from the patients. To examine the role of MMP26 in CS invasion, we used a human CS line SW1353 and we either overexpressed or inhibited MMP26 in these cells. We found that overexpression of MMP26 in SW1353 cells increased cell invasiveness, while inhibition of MMP26 decreased cell invasiveness. To define the signal transduction cascades downstream of MMP26 activation, we applied specific inhibitors for PI3K, ERK/MAPK, JNK, and Wnt signaling, respectively, to the MMP26-overexpressing SW1353 cells. We found that only inhibition of Wnt signaling by either metformin or IWP-2 significantly decreased the effect of MMP26 on cancer cell invasion, possibly through increasing ß-catenin phosphorylation. Further, a strong correlation was detected between MMP26 levels and the ratio of phosphorylated/total ß-catenin in CS from the patients. Taken together, our study highlights MMP26-regulated Wnt signaling as a novel therapeutic target for CS.

Electronically phase separated manganite wires are found to exhibit controllable metal-insulator transitions under local electric fields. The switching characteristics are shown to be fully reversible, polarity independent, and highly resistant to thermal breakdown caused by repeated cycling. It is further demonstrated that multiple discrete resistive states can be accessed in a single wire. The results conform to a phenomenological model in which the inherent nanoscale insulating and metallic domains are rearranged through electrophoretic-like processes to open and close percolation channels.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the effec of the herb-partitioned moxibustion on T-lymphocyte activity in immunosuppressed rats through differential modulation of the immune checkpoint molecules CD28 and CTLA-4. METHODS: Forty-eight Sprague‒Dawley rats were randomly divided into the normal group (NG), the cyclophosphamide model group (CTX), the herb-partitioned moxibustion group (HPM), the CD28 inhibitor + herb-partitioned moxibustion group (aCD28 + HPM), the CTLA-4 inhibitor + herb-partitioned moxibustion group (aCTLA-4 + HPM), and the levamisole group (LEV) (8 rats per group). The immunosuppression model was prepared using cyclophosphamide. HPM treatments was performed via herb-partitioned moxibustion at 4 acupoints, Zhongwan (CV12), Shenque (CV8), Guanyuan (CV4), and Zusanli (ST36). Subsequently, the moxa floss was made into a conical moxa cone, which was then placed on the herbal cake and ignited. Five consecutive moxibustion strokes were performed daily for 10 consecutive days. In addition to the same moxibustion, each rat in the aCD28 + HPM group was injected intraperitoneally with 0.5 mg/kg of CD28 inhibitor per rat on the first day of treatment, and 100 µL of CTLA-4 inhibitor was injected into the aCTLA-4 + HPM group on Days 1, 4, and 7. For the positive control, levamisole (LEV) was administered by gavage at a dose of 2 mg/kg once daily for 10 days. RESULTS: Compared with those in CTX model rats, the WBC counts in the HPM and other groups were significantly higher. The immobility time of EPM in the HPM group was significantly lower than that of the CTX group. The HE stainin results also showed that after treatment, the the marginal zone area of the spleen tissue in the HPM increased, the number of lymphatic sheath lymphocytes around the small central artery of the spleen increased, and the amount of red pulp containing a small amount of pigmentation was partially reduced. Compared with those in the CTX group, the serum levels of CD28, CTLA-4, B7-1, and B7-2 were significantly lower, and the levels of α-MSH, TrkB, and BDNF were significantly greater in the HPM group. The results of the flow cytometry assay showed a significant increase in the number of CD8 + T lymphocytes after treatment with HPM or other agents compared to that in the CTX group. The immunofluorescence results showed that the levels of CD28 and CTLA-4 lower in spleen tissues than in control tissues, and the binding ability of CD28 to B7-1 and B7-2 was weakened after treatment with HPM and other treatments compared with CTX rats, PCR for CD28, CTLA-4 and B7-1 showed similar results. CONCLUSION: In the immunosuppressive rat model induced by cyclophosphamide, HPM upregulated the expression of α-MSH, TrkB, and BDNF, and downregulated the expression of CD28 and CTLA-4, thereby enhancing the activity of CD8+ T lymphocytes, restoring spleen function, improving the immunosuppressive state, restoring immune function, and effectively alleviating depressive symptoms.

Neurexins play diverse functions as presynaptic organizers in various glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses. However, it remains unknown whether and how neurexins are involved in shaping functional properties of the glycinergic synapses, which mediate prominent inhibition in the brainstem and spinal cord. To address these issues, we examined the role of neurexins in a model glycinergic synapse between the principal neuron in the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB) and the principal neuron in the lateral superior olive (LSO) in the auditory brainstem. Combining RNAscope with stereotactic injection of AAV-Cre in the MNTB of neurexin1/2/3 conditional triple knockout mice, we showed that MNTB neurons highly express all isoforms of neurexins although their expression levels vary remarkably. Selective ablation of all neurexins in MNTB neurons not only reduced the amplitude but also altered the kinetics of the glycinergic synaptic transmission at LSO neurons. The synaptic dysfunctions primarily resulted from an impaired Ca2+ sensitivity of release and a loosened coupling between voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and synaptic vesicles. Together, our current findings demonstrate that neurexins are essential in controlling the strength and temporal precision of the glycinergic synapse, which therefore corroborates the role of neurexins as key presynaptic organizers in all major types of fast chemical synapses.

In an effort to reconcile the various interpretations for the cation components of the 2p3/2observed in x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of several spinel oxide materials, the XPS spectra of both spinel alloy nanoparticles and crystalline thin films are compared. We observed that different components of the 2p3/2core level XPS spectra, of these inverse spinel thin films, are distinctly surface and bulk weighted, indicating surface-to-bulk core level shifts in the binding energies. Surface-to-bulk core level shifts in binding energies of Ni and Fe 2p3/2core levels of NiFe2O4thin film are observed in angle-resolved XPS. The ratio between surface-weighted components and bulk-weighted components of the Ni and Fe core levels shows appreciable dependency on photoemission angle, with respect to surface normal. XPS showed that the ferrite nanoparticles NixCo1-xFe2O4(x= 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1) resemble the surface of the NiFe2O4thin film. Surface-to-bulk core level shifts are also observed in CoFe2O4and NiCo2O4thin films but not as significantly as in NiFe2O4thin film. Estimates of surface stoichiometry of some spinel oxide nanoparticles and thin films suggested that the apportionment between cationic species present could be farther from expectations for thin films as compared to what is seen with nanoparticles.

Materials with field-tunable polarization are of broad interest to condensed matter sciences and solid-state device technologies. Here, using hydrogen (H) donor doping, we modify the room temperature metallic phase of a perovskite nickelate NdNiO3 into an insulating phase with both metastable dipolar polarization and space-charge polarization. We then demonstrate transient negative differential capacitance in thin film capacitors. The space-charge polarization caused by long-range movement and trapping of protons dominates when the electric field exceeds the threshold value. First-principles calculations suggest the polarization originates from the polar structure created by H doping. We find that polarization decays within ~1 second which is an interesting temporal regime for neuromorphic computing hardware design, and we implement the transient characteristics in a neural network to demonstrate unsupervised learning. These discoveries open new avenues for designing ferroelectric materials and electrets using light-ion doping.

The crystal and magnetic structures of single-crystalline hexagonal LuFeO(3) films have been studied using x-ray, electron, and neutron diffraction methods. The polar structure of these films are found to persist up to 1050 K; and the switchability of the polar behavior is observed at room temperature, indicating ferroelectricity. An antiferromagnetic order was shown to occur below 440 K, followed by a spin reorientation resulting in a weak ferromagnetic order below 130 K. This observation of coexisting multiple ferroic orders demonstrates that hexagonal LuFeO(3) films are room-temperature multiferroics.

Melatonin is a multifunctional molecule that has been widely discovered in most plants. An increasing number of studies have shown that melatonin plays essential roles in plant growth and stress tolerance. It has been extensively applied to alleviate the harmful effects of abiotic stresses. In view of its role in regulating aspects of plant growth and development, we ponder and summarize the scientific discoveries about seed germination, root development, flowering, fruit maturation, and senescence. Under abiotic and biotic stresses, melatonin brings together many pathways to increase access to treatments for the symptoms of plants and to counteract the negative effects. It has the capacity to tackle regulation of the redox, plant hormone networks, and endogenous melatonin. Furthermore, the expression levels of several genes and the contents of diverse secondary metabolites, such as polyphenols, terpenoids, and alkaloids, were significantly altered. In this review, we intend to examine the actions of melatonin in plants from a broader perspective, explore the range of its physiological functions, and analyze the relationship between melatonin and other metabolites and metabolic pathways.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of herbal cake separated moxibustion on macrophage effector molecule T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-4 (Tim-4) and ubiquitination of programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) in rabbits with immunosuppression, and to explore the possible mechanism on herbal cake separated moxibustion in improving immunosuppression. METHODS: Thirty-two big-ear white rabbits were randomly divided into a normal group, a model group, a moxa stick moxibustion group and a herbal cake separated moxibustion group, 8 rabbits in each group. Except the normal group, the immunosuppression model was established by intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide of60 mg/kg in the other 3 groups. "Shenque" (CV 8), "Shenshu" (BL 23), "Zusanli" (ST 36), etc. were selected in both the moxa stick moxibustion group and the herbal cake separated moxibustion group. Moxa stick moxibustion was applied in the moxa stick moxibustion group, one cone at each acupoint; herbal cake separated moxibustion was applied in the herbal cake separated moxibustion group, 5 cones at each acupoint. The intervention was given once every other day for 10 times in both groups. Leukocyte content in peripheral blood was detected by blood cell analyzer; the positive expression of PD-1 in CD+4 T lymphocytes, CD+8T lymphocytes and CD+68 macrophages in peripheral blood was measured by flow cytometry, the serum levels of interleukin 2 (IL-2), CD8, CD68 and Tim-4 were detected by ELISA, and the expression of Tim-4 and F-box only protein 38 (FBXO38) in the liver and spleen tissues was measured by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Compared with the normal group, in the model group, white blood cell count (WBC) and percentage of neutrophils (NEU%) were decreased while percentage of lymphocyte (LYM%) was increased (P<0.01) in peripheral blood; the positive expression rates of PD-1 in CD+4 T lymphocytes, CD+8T lymphocytes and CD+68 macrophages in peripheral blood were increased (P<0.01); the serum levels of IL-2, CD68 and Tim-4 were increased (P<0.01), the serum level of CD8 was decreased (P<0.01); the average optical density (AOD) of Tim-4 in the liver tissue and FBXO38 in the liver and spleen tissues was increased (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, in the moxa stick moxibustion group and the herbal cake separated moxibustion group, WBC and NEU% were increased (P<0.01); the positive expression rates of PD-1 in CD+4 T lymphocytes, CD+8T lymphocytes and CD+68 macrophages in peripheral blood were decreased (P<0.01); the serum levels of IL-2, CD68 and Tim-4 were decreased (P<0.01), the serum levels of CD8 were increased (P<0.01); the AOD of Tim-4 and FBXO38 in the liver tissue and FBXO38 in the spleen tissue was decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05). Compared with the moxa stick moxibustion group, in the herbal cake separated moxibustion group, the positive expression rate of PD-1 in CD+68 macrophages in peripheral blood was increased (P<0.05); serum level of Tim-4 was increased (P<0.01); AOD of Tim-4 in the liver tissue was decreased (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Herbal cake separated moxibustion can improve immunosuppression by regulating the expression of macrophage effector molecule Tim-4 and the FBXO38 mediated ubiquitination of PD-1, Tim-4 may be one of the specific indexes of immunomodulation involving with herbal cake separated moxibustion.

Nanostructured plasmonic-magnetic metamaterials have gained great research interest due to their enhanced magneto-optical coupling effects. Here, we report a complex three-phase nanocomposite design combining ferromagnetic CoFe2 with plasmonic TiN and Au as a multifunctional hybrid metamaterial using either a cogrowth or a templated method. Via the first method of cogrowing three phases, three different morphologies of Au-CoFe2 core-shell nanopillars were formed in the TiN matrix. Via the second method of sequential deposition of a TiN-Au seed layer and a TiN-CoFe2 layer, highly ordered and uniform single-type core-shell nanopillars (i.e., the CoFe2 shell with a Au core) form in the TiN matrix. Both cogrowth and templated growth TiN-CoFe2-Au hybrid systems exhibit excellent epitaxial quality, hyperbolic dispersion, magnetic anisotropy, and a magneto-optical coupling effect. This study provides an effective approach for achieving highly uniform multiphase vertically aligned nanocomposite structures with well-integrated optical, magnetic, and coupling properties.
