Introduction:

Prolonged breastfeeding is considered a period that goes beyond the minimum recommended by the World Health Organization, that is, two years of age.

Objective:

To understand the elements involved and the reasons that led nurturing women to opt for prolonged breastfeeding.

Method:

Qualitative study, conducted through semi-structured interviews, with seven nourishing women, by sampling in snowballs, who breastfed or were breastfeeding for two years or more, living in a city of the interior of São Paulo, from January to June 2018. Prolonged breastfeeding as a social practice and women's reproductive right were the theoretical references, inferred by Bardin's Content Analysis.

Results:

Two thematic categories emerged "Elements for prolonged breastfeeding" and "Autonomy and rights". The study made it possible to understand the factors involved in the continuity of breastfeeding, such as flexibility in the workplace or the possibility of not working outside the home, access to reliable information and the support network, represented by the support of family members and groups, decisive in the empowerment of women for the continuity of breastfeeding.

Conclusion:

Considering these aspects, it is necessary a new model of care that respects the autonomy of women in the period of breastfeeding, to be understood and respected for the guarantee of rights.(AU)
