RESUMO

The spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, is a popular game fish in the southeastern USA. It is estimated that nearly 90% of the adult population in South Carolina estuaries are infected in their skeletal muscle by the myxosporean, Kudoa inornata. However, little is known about this parasite's biology, including the distribution and densities of myxospores within tissues of infected fish, which we expect affect the physiology of their hosts. In order to correlate densities with physiological parameters in future studies, we quantified the myxospores density in muscle and characterized the variation among individual fish. Naïve juvenile seatrout was experimentally infected via presumed K. inornata actinospores exposure to raw seawater. A plug of muscle was extracted from two bilaterally symmetrical regions in the epaxial fillet from fresh and frozen carcasses. Variation in density data was calculated both within and among individuals. Within individuals, density counts were compared between left- and right-side biopsies. There was no significant difference between fresh and frozen plugs, and variation among individuals accounted for the greatest proportion of variation at 68.8%, while variation within individuals was substantial at 25.6%. Simulation and correlation tests confirmed that bilaterally symmetrical replicates varied significantly within individuals. When sampled from areas surrounding the initial biopsies, myxospore density estimates were more similar than between sides. Our findings have important implications for sampling design, particularly for studies investigating physiological parameters at the cellular or molecular level in association with parasite infection.

Fatty acid-binding protein 1 (FABP1) plays an important role in regulating fatty acid metabolism in liver, which is a potential therapeutic target for diseases such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the underlying mechanisms are not well defined. Using complementary experimental models, we discovered FABP1 induction in hepatocytes as a primary mediator of lipogenesis when exposed to fatty acids, especially saturated fatty acids (SFAs). In the feeding trial, palm oil led to excess lipid accumulation in the liver of large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), accompanied by significant induction of FABP1. In cultured cells, palmitic acid (PA), a kind of SFA, triggered the fabp1 expression and increased triglyceride (TG) contents. Knockdown of FABP1 dampened PA-induced TG accumulation through mitigated lipogenesis. The overexpression of FABP1 showed the opposite result. Furthermore, the inactivation of FABP1 led to induction in insulin-induced gene 1 (INSIG1) expression, which attenuated the processing of sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) by down-regulating the nuclear-localized SREBP1. These results revealed a previously unrecognized function of FABP1 in response to PA, providing additional evidence for targeting FABP1 in the treatment of NAFLD caused by SFA.

BACKGROUND: Temperature is a crucial environmental determinant for the vitality and development of teleost fish, yet the underlying mechanisms by which they sense temperature fluctuations remain largely unexplored. Transient receptor potential (TRP) proteins, renowned for their involvement in temperature sensing, have not been characterized in teleost fish, especially regarding their temperature-sensing capabilities. RESULTS: In this study, a genome-wide analysis was conducted, identifying a total of 28 TRP genes in the mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi. These genes were categorized into the families of TRPA, TRPC, TRPP, TRPM, TRPML, and TRPV. Despite notable variations in conserved motifs across different subfamilies, TRP family members shared common structural features, including ankyrin repeats and the TRP domain. Tissue expression analysis showed that each of these TRP genes exhibited a unique expression pattern. Furthermore, examination of the tissue expression patterns of ten selected TRP genes following exposure to both high and low temperature stress indicated the expression of TRP genes were responsive to temperatures changes. Moreover, the expression profiles of TRP genes in response to mandarin fish virus infections showed significant upregulation for most genes after Siniperca chuatsi rhabdovirus, mandarin fish iridovirus and infectious spleen and kidney necrosis virus infection. CONCLUSIONS: This study characterized the TRP family genes in mandarin fish genome-wide, and explored their expression patterns in response to temperature stress and virus infections. Our work will enhance the overall understanding of fish TRP channels and their possible functions.

Sustainable management of transboundary fish stocks hinges on accurate delineation of population structure. Genetic analysis offers a powerful tool to identify potential subpopulations within a seemingly homogenous stock, facilitating the development of effective, coordinated management strategies across international borders. Along the West African coast, the Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias) is a commercially important and ecologically significant species, yet little is known about its genetic population structure and connectivity. Currently, the stock is managed as a single unit in West African waters despite new research suggesting morphological and adaptive differences. Here, eight microsatellite loci were genotyped on 1,169 individuals distributed across 33 sampling sites from Morocco (27.39°N) to Namibia (22.21°S). Bayesian clustering analysis depicts one homogeneous population across the studied area with null overall differentiation (F ST = 0.0001ns), which suggests panmixia and aligns with the migratory potential of this species. This finding has significant implications for the effective conservation and management of S. colias within a wide scope of its distribution across West African waters from the South of Morocco to the North-Centre of Namibia and underscores the need for increased regional cooperation in fisheries management and conservation.

Scanning electron microscopy studies of three paratype specimens (two males and one female) of Ascarophis parupenei Moravec, Orecchia & Paggi, 1988, an intestinal parasite of the marine fish Parupeneus indicus (Shaw) in the Indian Ocean, made it possible to redescribe in detail the cephalic structures of this nematode as well as the morphology of the male caudal end. The presence of non-bilobed sublabia, phasmids in both males and females, bifurcated deirids, well-developed precloacal cuticular ridges (area rugosa) and a ventral median caudal protuberance in the male are reported in this species for the first time. The general morphology and measurements of A. parupenei somewhat resemble those of Rasheedia novaecaledoniensis Moravec & Justine, 2018 described from the same host species (P. indicus) from off New Caledonia, but both species clearly differ from each other by the shape and structure of pseudolabia and the anterior portion of the digestive tract, belonging thus to different nematode families (Cystidicolidae and Physalopteridae, respectively).

Barramundi aquaculture is at risk of severe disease outbreaks and massive production losses. Here we used bioinformatics to screen 84 farmed barramundi transcriptomes to identify novel viruses that could threaten barramundi aquaculture and to establish a barramundi aquaculture virome. We discovered five novel viruses: latid herpesvirus 1 (LatHV-1) from the Alloherpesviridae family, barramundi parvovirus 1 (BParV1) from the Parvoviridae family, barramundi calicivirus 1 (BCaV1) from the Caliciviridae family, and barramundi associated picorna-like virus 1 and 2 (BPicV1 and BPicV2) from the Picornaviridae family. LatHV-1, BCaV1, and BParV1 are closely related to pathogenic viruses found in other fish species that can cause mass mortality in farms. To aid in future viral surveillance, we also designed and successfully tested an RT-PCR assay for the detection of BCaV1. Overall, we discovered a range of pathogenic viruses in barramundi aquaculture, paving the way for developing effective detection methods to assist early outbreak management.

The economic importance of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) is increasing, but several aspects of its immune responses are not well understood. To discover genes and mechanisms involved in the lumpfish antiviral response, fish were intraperitoneally injected with either the viral mimic polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid [poly(I:C)] or phosphate-buffered saline (PBS; vehicle control), and head kidneys were sampled 24 hours post-injection (hpi) for transcriptomic analyses. RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) (adjusted p-value <0.05) identified 4,499 upregulated and 3,952 downregulated transcripts in the poly(I:C)-injected fish compared to the PBS-injected fish. Eighteen genes identified as differentially expressed by RNA-Seq were included in a qPCR study that confirmed the upregulation of genes encoding proteins with antiviral immune response functions (e.g., rsad2) and the downregulation of genes (e.g., jarid2b) with potential cellular process functions. In addition, transcript expression levels of 12 members of the interferon regulatory factor (IRF) family [seven of which were identified as poly(I:C)-responsive in this RNA-Seq study] were analyzed using qPCR. Levels of irf1a, irf1b, irf2, irf3, irf4b, irf7, irf8, irf9, and irf10 were significantly higher and levels of irf4a and irf5 were significantly lower in the poly(I:C)-injected fish compared to the PBS-injected fish. This research and associated new genomic resources enhance our understanding of the genes and molecular mechanisms underlying the lumpfish response to viral mimic stimulation and help identify possible therapeutic targets and biomarkers for viral infections in this species.

Coral reefs rely heavily on reef fish for their health, yet overfishing has resulted in their decline, leading to an increase in fast-growing algae and changes in reef ecosystems, a phenomenon described as the phase-shift. A clearer understanding of the intricate interplay between herbivorous, their food, and their gut microbiomes could enhance reef health. This study examines the gut microbiome and isotopic markers (δ13C and δ15N) of four key nominally herbivorous reef fish species (Acanthurus chirurgus, Kyphosus sp., Scarus trispinosus, and Sparisoma axillare) in the Southwestern Atlantic's Abrolhos Reef systems. Approximately 16.8 million 16S rRNA sequences were produced for the four fish species, with an average of 317,047 ± 57,007 per species. Bacteria such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Cyanobacteria were prevalent in their microbiomes. These fish show unique microbiomes that result from co-diversification, diet, and restricted movement. Coral-associated bacteria (Endozoicomonas, Rhizobia, and Ruegeria) were found in abundance in the gut contents of the parrotfish species Sc. trispinosus and Sp. axillare. These parrotfishes could aid coral health by disseminating such beneficial bacteria across the reef. Meanwhile, Kyphosus sp. predominantly had Pirellulaceae and Rhodobacteraceae. Four fish species had a diet composed of turf components (filamentous Cyanobacteria) and brown algae (Dictyopteris). They also had similar isotopic niches, suggesting they shared food sources. A significant difference was observed between the isotopic signature of fish muscular gut tissue and gut contents, pointing to the role that host genetics and gut microbes play in differentiating fish tissues.

Marine predators often aggregate at the air-sea boundary layer to pursue shared prey. In such scenarios, seabirds are likely to benefit from underwater predators herding fish schools into tight clusters thereby enhancing seabirds' prey detectability and capture potential. However, this coexistence can lead to competition, affecting not only immediate foraging strategies but also their distribution and interspecies dynamics. We investigated both the longitudinal relationships and instantaneous interactions between streaked shearwaters (Calonectris leucomelas) and common dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), both preying on Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus). Using GPS data from 2011 to 2021, we calculated behavioural parameters for streaked shearwaters as an index of time spent and distance travelled. Despite the abundance of Japanese anchovies, we found that streaked shearwaters might increase their foraging time in the presence of underwater predators. Moreover, video loggers provided direct evidence of streaked shearwaters and common dolphinfish attacking the same fish schools, potentially interfering with bird foraging by dolphinfish. Our results suggest that the presence of underwater predators in a given patch might increase the time spent by seabirds foraging without affecting the distance travelled. This highlights the need for future studies that consider the potential adverse effects of other top predators on seabird prey availability.

Lunar rhythms shape spawning phenology and subsequent risks and rewards for early life-history stages in the sea. Here, we consider a perplexing spawning phenology of the sixbar wrasse (Thalassoma hardwicke), in which parents spawn disproportionately around the new moon, despite the low survival of these larvae. Because primary sex determination in this system is highly plastic and sensitive to social environments experienced early in development, we ask whether this puzzling pattern of spawning is explained by fitness trade-offs associated with primary sexual maturation. We used otoliths from 871 fish to explore how spawning on different phases of the moon shapes the environments and phenotypes of settling larvae. Offspring that were born at the new moon were more likely to settle (i) before other larvae, (ii) at a larger body size, (iii) at an older age, (iv) to the best quality sites, and (v) as part of a social group-all increasing the likelihood of primary maturation to male. Selection of birthdates across life stage transitions suggests that the perplexing spawning phenology of adults may reflect an evolutionarily stable strategy that includes new moon spawning for compensatory benefits later in life, including preferential production of primary males at certain times.

Rastrelliger brachysoma (Bleeker, 1851), the short mackerel, is a dietary staple and of significant economic demand in Southeast Asia and Thailand. However, the demand for short mackerel has precipitated an overfishing crisis, leading to a depletion of fish stocks. Overfishing, coupled with parasitism, may result in a decline in the population of R. brachysoma. Digenetic trematode infection is prevalent in marine fish and has a considerable impact on the overall health of the fish. Here, to identify digenetic trematodes infecting R. brachysoma, we aim to determine the identity, prevalence, and intensity of digenean infections in R. brachysoma from the Gulf of Thailand. A total of 194 short mackerel were obtained from Chon Buri Province, where digeneans were isolated and identified. The molecular identity of the digeneans was confirmed using the nuclear 28S rRNA gene. Of the 194 short mackerel, 100% were found to be infected with digeneans, comprising of Lecithocladium, Prodistomum, Opechona, and Aphanurus. Lecithocladium was the most prevalent (98%) and had the highest intensity of infection (37 mean intensity), followed by Prodistomum (75% prevalence and 17 mean intensity). Our study thus presents the first evidence of digeneans infecting the economically important short mackerel from the Gulf of Thailand. The high infection rate of digenetic trematodes may have implications on the health of R. brachysoma, further driving their population decline. These data underscore the importance of safeguarding fisheries resources in the Gulf of Thailand, and downstream conservation efforts are crucial for evidence-based management decisions to safeguard the long-term sustainability of fish resources.

Based on salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (SALLE) and high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), a simple, rapid pretreatment without complex clean-up for the determination of 22 veterinary drug residues in aquatic products was developed and validated. In order to improve the efficiency of the method, the key procedural parameters of SALLE were fabricated. Na2EDTA-Mcllvaine buffer/ACN was used as the extraction solvent, anhydrous MgSO4 and NaCl as the extraction salts. The relationship between extraction efficiency and logD was initially evaluated during the optimization process. This study was well validated in various aquatic samples such as bass, large yellow croaker, carp, and shrimp, the limits of detection (LOD) and accuracy for all compounds ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 µg/kg, 71.4% to 120%. This method has the advantages of rapidity, simplicity, low cost, and high efficiency, and has broad potential for risk monitoring and evaluation of veterinary antibiotics in aquatic products.

Marine fishes excrete excess H+ using basolateral Na+-K+-ATPase (NKA) and apical Na+/H+ exchanger 3 (NHE3) in gill ionocytes. However, the mechanisms that regulate H+ excretion during exposure to environmentally relevant hypercapnia (ERH) remain poorly understood. Here, we explored transcriptomic, proteomic, and cellular responses in gills of juvenile splitnose rockfish (Sebastes diploproa) exposed to 3 days of ERH conditions (pH ∼7.5, ∼1,600 µatm Pco2). Blood pH was fully regulated at ∼7.75 despite a lack of significant changes in gill 1) mRNAs coding for proteins involved in blood acid-base regulation, 2) total NKA and NHE3 protein abundance, and 3) ionocyte density. However, ERH-exposed rockfish demonstrated increased NKA and NHE3 abundance on the ionocyte plasma membrane coupled with wider apical membranes and greater extension of apical microvilli. The observed gill ionocyte remodeling is consistent with enhanced H+ excretion that maintains blood pH homeostasis during exposure to ERH and does not necessitate changes at the expression or translation levels. These mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity may allow fishes to regulate blood pH during environmentally relevant acid-base challenges and thus have important implications for both understanding how organisms respond to climate change and for selecting appropriate metrics to evaluate its impact on marine ecosystems.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Splitnose rockfish exposed to environmentally relevant hypercapnia utilize existing proteins (rather than generate additional machinery) to maintain homeostasis.

The large yellow croaker roe phospholipids (LYPLs), rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, is a potential phospholipid additive for meat products. In this work, the effects of LYPLs on the structural and functional properties of myofibrillar protein (MP) were determined, and compared with egg yolk phospholipids (EYPLs) and soybean phospholipids (SBPLs). The results revealed that LYPLs, similar to SBPLs and EYPLs, induced a transformation in the secondary structure of MP from α-helix to ß-sheets and random coils, while also inhibited the formation of carbonyl and disulfide bonds within MP. All three phospholipids induced MP tertiary structure unfolding, with the greatest degree of unfolding observed in MP containing LYPLs. The MP with LYPLs had the highest surface hydrophobicity, emulsification properties and gel strength. In addition, MP with LYPLs added also demonstrated superior rheological properties and water-holding capacity compared with SBPLs and EYPLs. In conclusion, adding LYPLs endowed MP with improved functional properties.

Understanding and forecasting changes in marine habitats due to global climate warming is crucial for sustainable fisheries. Using future environmental data provided by Global Climate Models (GCMs) and occurrence records of Chub mackerel in the North Pacific Ocean (2014-2023), we built eight individual models and four ensemble models to simulate current habitat distribution and forecast changes under three future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP5-8.5) for the 2050s and 2100s. Ensemble models outperformed individual ones, with the weighted average algorithm model achieving the highest accuracy (AUC 0.994, TSS 0.929). Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a (Chla) significantly influenced habitat distribution. Predictions indicate current high suitability areas for Chub mackerel are concentrated beyond the 200-nautical-mile baseline. Under future climate scenarios, habitat suitability is expected to decline, with a shift towards higher latitudes and deeper waters. High suitability areas will be significantly reduced.

Blood transcriptomics has emerged as a vital tool for tracking the immune system and supporting disease diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and research. The present study was conducted to analyze the gene expression profile and potential biomarker candidates using the whole blood of mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) infected with LPS or poly (I:C) at 0 h, 3 h, 6 h, and 12 h. Our data suggest that 310 shared differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified among each comparison group after LPS infection, and 137 shared DEGs were identified after poly (I:C) infection. A total of 62 shared DEGs were differentially expressed in all compared groups after LPS or poly (I:C) infection. Pathways analysis for DEGs in all different compared groups showed that cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction was the most enrichment pathway. The expression levels of genes C-X-C chemokine receptor type 2-like (cxcr2), chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 9a (ccr9a), chemokine (C-C motif) receptor 9b (ccr9b), chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 4b (cxcr4b), and interleukin 10 receptor alpha (il10ra) were significantly different in all compared groups and most enriched in cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathway. The protein-protein interactions analysis among all shared DEGs showed that cxcr4 was the hub gene with the highest degree. The biomarker candidates discovered in this study may, following validation, prove effective as diagnostic tools in monitoring mandarin fish diseases.

A new species of hemiurid trematode found on the gills and in the aorta of the pelagic thresher Alopias pelagicus from the eastern Pacific, off Costa Rica, is described based on an integrative taxonomic approach that includes the use of light and scanning electron microscopy, and 28S rDNA sequencing. Phylogenetic analysis was also performed to explore, for the first time, the relationships of a member of the subfamily Otiotrematinae within the suborder Hemiurata. Paronatrema davidbowiei n. sp. can be distinguished from the congeners by having tegumental spines on the dorsal surface of the forebody, papillae on the oral sucker, and different morphology or number of testicular follicles. BLAST analysis revealed that sequences of Paronatrema davidbowiei n. sp. had the highest degree of similarity with Hirudinella spp. (Hirudinellidae). Results from Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses, returning trees with the exact same topology and strong branch support, distinguished between the two superfamilies included in the suborder Hemiurata: Azygioidea and Hemiuroidea. Our analysis placed the new species in a clade with Copiatestes filiferus, the only existing sequence of the family Syncoeliidae.

Rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) is one of the highly priced cultured marine fish in Korea. Rock bream iridovirus (RBIV) outbreaks in aquaculture farms may involve environmental factors, co-infection with other pathogenic microorganisms and grounded (raw) fish feed. This study evaluated the effects of RBIV-containing tissue intake on mortality and oral transmission in rock bream. Virus-containing tissues administered to rock bream [50 mg (1.53 × 108/major capsid protein, MCP gene copies) to 2400 mg (7.34 × 109)] held at 23 °C lead to 100 % mortality by 27 days post administration. Interestingly, the mortality rates were not viral dose- or concentration dependent. Further, high MCP gene copy numbers were observed in the gill, liver, intestine, stomach, spleen, heart, kidney, brain and muscle tissues (viral load range of 3.03 × 106 to 4.01 × 107/mg, average viral load 1.70 × 107/mg) of dead rock bream. Moreover, a high viral load was detected in the intestine and stomach, where the virus was directly administered. This indicated that the intake of RBIV-containing tissue feed weakens the intestinal mucosal immunity and increases viral load in the intestine. Moreover, the levels of complete blood cell count (CBC) indicators, such as red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (HCT) significantly decreased from 15 dpi with red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and white blood cells (lymphocyte, monocyte and granulocyte) significantly increased from the initial to later stage of infection. These results highlight the significance of blood-mediated indicators against RBIV infection in rock bream. We demonstrate the existence of an oral transmission route for RBIV in rock bream. Our findings indicate that pathogen-containing feed is an important risk factor for disease outbreaks in rock bream.

In addition to controlling gene expression, mediating DNA folding into chromatin, and responding to immunological stimuli, histones are also thought to have antimicrobial effects. This study identified the molecular characteristics of core Histone MacroH2A2 (TOMacroH2A2) and Histone H2B 1/2 (TOH2B) from Trachinotus ovatus, and the antimicrobial potential of their derived peptides (To.mh2a and To. h2b). The open reading frames (ORFs) of TOMacroH2A2 and TOH2B from T. ovatus were 1010 bp and 375 bp, encoding polypeptides of 369 and 124 amino acids, respectively. The TOMacroH2A2 included an H2A domain and an A1pp domain, while TOH2B included an H2B domain. The amino acid sequences of TOMacroH2A2 and TOH2B demonstrated high homology with other teleost's sequences of histone macroh2a2 and histone h2b, with homologies exceeding 90 %. Expression analysis showed high expression of TOMacroH2A2 in brain, stomach, heart, and skin tissues and TOH2B in gill, brain, and skin tissues. In addition, the histone-derived peptides To. mh2a and To. h2b, synthesized based on two histone sequences from T. ovatus, exhibited typical physical characteristics of antimicrobial peptides, including positive charges, amphipathicity, hydrophobicity, and rich α-helix structure. Crucially, the vitro antibacterial results demonstrated that To. mh2a and To. h2b can inhibit the growth of various aquatic pathogens including Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Acinetobacter baumannii, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Escherichia coli to varying degrees. Specifically, To. mh2a and To. h2b were capable of disrupting the cell surface structures of S. aureus and penetrating the cell membrane, leading to the leakage of cellular contents, thereby exerting their antibacterial effects. Furthermore, gel electrophoresis migration assays showed that To. mh2a and To. h2b participated in antimicrobial activity by binding to bacterial genomic DNA and reducing the migration rate of gDNA in a dose-dependent manner. The minimum effective concentration for binding to DNA was approximately 50 µM. In conclusion, our study suggested that To. mh2a and To. h2b can act as antimicrobial peptides, providing a potential strategy for controlling bacterial diseases in T. ovatus.

Red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, are a marine teleost native to the Gulf of Mexico that routinely experiences periods of low oxygen (hypoxia). Recent work has demonstrated this species has the capacity to improve aerobic performance in hypoxia through respiratory acclimation. However, it remains unknown how hypoxia acclimation impacts anaerobic metabolism in red drum, and the consequences of exhaustive exercise and recovery. Juvenile fish were acclimated to normoxia (n = 15, DO 90.4 ± 6.42 %) or hypoxia (n = 15, DO 33.6 ± 7.2 %) for 8 days then sampled at three time points: at rest, after exercise, and after a 3 h recovery period. The resting time point was used to characterize the acclimated phenotype, while the remaining time points demonstrate how this phenotype responds to exhaustive exercise. Whole blood, red muscle, white muscle, and heart tissues were sampled for metabolites and enzyme activity. The resting phenotype was characterized by lower pHe and changes to skeletal muscle ATP. Exhaustive exercise increased muscle lactate, and decreased phosphocreatine and ATP with no effect of acclimation. Interestingly, hypoxia-acclimated fish had higher pHe and pHi than control in all exercise time points. Red muscle ATP was lower in hypoxia-acclimated fish versus control at each sample period. Moreover, acclimated fish increased lactate dehydrogenase activity in the red muscle. Hypoxia acclimation increased white muscle ATP and hexokinase activity, a glycolytic enzyme. In a gait-transition swim test, hypoxia-acclimated fish recruited anaerobic-powered burst swimming at lower speeds in normoxia compared to control fish. These data suggest that acclimation increases reliance on anaerobic metabolism, and does not benefit recovery from exhaustive exercise.
