ABSTRACT

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is the nonthermal luminescence generated in the process of force-to-light conversion, which has broad prospects in stress sensing, wearable devices, biomechanics, and multiple information anticounterfeiting. Multivalence emitter ions utilize their own self-reduction process to realize multiband ML without introducing another dopant, such as Eu3+/Eu2+, Sm3+/Sm2+, and Mn4+/Mn2+. However, self-reduction-induced ML in bismuth-activated materials has rarely been reported so far. In this work, a novel visible-to-near-infrared (vis-NIR) ML induced by the self-reduction of Bi3+ to Bi2+ in the spinel-type compound (MgGa2O4) is reported. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra, PL excitation (PLE) spectra, and PL lifetime curves demonstrate that Bi3+/Bi2+ ions are the main luminescence centers. Notably, the possible self-reduction model is proposed, where a magnesium vacancy (VMg″) is considered as the driving force for the self-reduction of Bi3+ to Bi2+. Furthermore, an oxygen vacancy (VO••) is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Combined with thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves and ML spectra, a plausible trap-controlled ML mechanism is illustrated, where electron-hole (VO••/VMg″) pairs play a significant role in capturing electrons and holes. It is worth noting that the proof-of-concept dual-mode electronic signature application is implemented based on the flexible ML film, which improves the capabilities of signature anticounterfeiting for high-level security applications. Besides, multistimulus-responsive luminescence behaviors of the ML film are realized under the excitation of a 254 nm UV lamp, thermal disturbance, 980 nm laser, and mechanical stimuli. In general, this study provides new insights into designing vis-NIR ML materials toward wider application possibilities.

ABSTRACT

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials are featured with the characteristic of "force to light" in response to external stimuli, which have made great progress in artificial intelligence and optical sensing. However, how to effectively enable ML in the material is a daunting challenge. Here, a Lu3 Al2 Ga3 O12 :Cr3+ (LAGO: Cr3+ ) near infrared (NIR) ML material peaked at 706 nm is reported, which successfully realizes the key to unlock ML by the lattice-engineering strategy Ga3+ substitution for Al3+ to "grow" oxygen vacancy (Ov ) defects. Combined with thermoluminescence measurements, the observed ML is due to the formation of defect levels and the ML intensity is proportional to it. It is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance that such a process is dominated by Ov , which plays a crucial role in turning on ML in this compound. In addition, potential ML emissions from 4 T2 and 2 E level transitions are discussed from both experimental and theoretical aspects. This study reveals the mechanism of the change in ML behavior after cation substitution, and it may have important implications for the practical application of Ov defect-regulated turn-on of ML.

ABSTRACT

Mechanoluminescence (ML) materials have found potential applications in information storage, anti-counterfeiting, and stress sensing. Conventional stress sensing based on absolute ML intensity is prone to significant mistakes owing to the unpredictability of measurement surroundings. However, implementing a ratiometric ML sensing technique may considerably ameliorate this issue. In this study, a single activator-doped gallate material (LiGa5 O8 :Pr3+ ) is proposed to determine the relationship between the ML intensity and the change in local positional symmetry that occurs when the material is subjected to stress. The sensing reliability of the ML intensity ratio under different factors (Force; Content; Thickness and Materials) is systematically analyzed, where the factor that has the greatest effect on the proportional ML is the concentration, with the ML intensity asymmetry ratio decreasing from 1.868 to 1.300 varying concentration at constant stress. The colour-resolved visualization of stress sensing is further realized, which opens a new path for a ratiometric ML-based strategy to improve the reliability of stress sensing.

ABSTRACT

Inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (CsPbX3 QDs (X = Cl, Br, or I)) have attracted more and more attention due to their high absorption coefficient, narrow emission band, high quantum efficiency, and tunable emission wavelength. However, CsPbX3 QDs are decomposed when exposed to bright light, heat, moisture, etc., which leads to severe luminous attenuation and limits their commercial application. In this paper, CsPbBr3@glass materials were successfully synthesized by a one-step self-crystallization method, including melting, quenching and heat treatment processes. The stability of CsPbBr3 QDs was improved by embedding CsPbBr3 QDs into zinc-borosilicate glass. Then, the CsPbBr3@glass was combined with polyurethane (PU) to form a flexible composite luminescent film CsPbBr3@glass@PU. This strategy enables the transformation of rigid perovskite quantum dot glass into flexible luminescent film materials and further improves the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 50.5% to 70.2%. The flexible film has good tensile properties, and its length can be strained 5 times as long as the original length. Finally, a white LED was encapsulated by combining CsPbBr3@glass@PU film and red phosphor K2SiF6:Mn4+ with a blue LED chip. The good performance of the obtained CsPbBr3@glass@PU film indicates that it has potential application in flexible liquid crystal displays (LCDs) as a backlight source.

ABSTRACT

An activator's selective occupation of a host is of great significance for designing high-quality white light-emitting diode phosphors, while achieving a full-spectrum single-phase white light emission phosphor is challenging. In this study, a boron phosphate solid-solution Na2Y2(BO3)2-x(PO4)xO:0.005 Bi3+ (NYB2-xPxO:0.005 Bi3+) white phosphor was designed by selectively occupying Bi3+ activators in the mixed anionic groups. The substitutes of the anionic unit (BO3)3- by the (PO4)3- unit are supposed to force part of the Bi3+ ion to enter the Na lattice site, which produces an intense orange-red emission peaked at 590 nm. In parallel, spectral tuning from blue to white light and an internal quantum efficiency of 56.42% was obtained, and the thermal stabile luminescence intensity remains at 94.2% of the initial intensity after four heating-cooling cycles from 30 to 210 °C (luminescent intensity is 83.6% of room temperature (RT) at 150 °C, with excellent thermal stability and recovery performance). Finally, an excellent color rendering index (Ra = 90.8 and R9 = 85) was demonstrated for white light-emitting diode devices using only an NYB1.5P0.5O:0.005 Bi3+ phosphor and a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) 365 nm LED chip. This work delves into the different selective occupancy of Bi3+ ions and explores a new avenue for the design of phosphors for full-spectrum white light emission.

ABSTRACT

Increasing circular RNAs (circRNAs) have been identified as pivotal players in nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The study will explore the function and mechanism of circRNA High Mobility Group AT-hook 2 (circHMGA2) in NSCLC. The circHMGA2, microRNA-331-3p (miR-331-3p) and HMGA2 expression analyses were performed via quantitative real-time PCR. Cell proliferation was assessed via Cell Counting Kit-8 and colony formation assays. Transwell migration/invasion assays were used for measuring cell metastasis. Glucose consumption and lactate production were determined for glycolytic evaluation. Western blot was used to detect the protein expression of HMGA2 and glycolytic markers. Target analysis was performed by dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation and RNA pull-down assays. Xenograft tumor assay in mice was conducted for the investigation of circHMGA2 in vivo . CircHMGA2 was overexpressed in NSCLC, and high circHMGA2 level might be related to NSCLC metastasis and poor prognosis. In-vitro assays suggested that NSCLC cell growth, metastasis and glycolysis were retarded by downregulation of circHMGA2. Upregulation of HMGA2 was shown to return the anticancer response of circHMGA2 knockdown in NSCLC cells. Through interacting with miR-331-3p, circHMGA2 could regulate the expression of HMGA2. In addition, circHMGA2/miR-331-3p and miR-331-3p/HMGA2 axes were affirmed in NSCLC regulation. In-vivo analysis indicated that circHMGA2 inhibition also reduced tumorigenesis and glycolysis of NSCLC via the miR-331-3p/HMGA2 axis. This study disclosed the oncogenic role of circHMGA2 and the regulatory circHMGA2/miR-331-3p/HMGA2 axis in NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Research on high-performance gas sensors for detecting toxic and harmful methanol gas is still a very important issue. For gas sensors, it is very important to be able to achieve low concentration detection at room temperature. In this work, we used the electrospinning method to prepare Mg-doped InSnO nanofiber field-effect transistors (FETs) methanol gas sensor. When the Mg element doping concentration is 2.3 mol.%, InSnO nanofiber FET exhibits excellent electrical properties, including higher mobility of 3.17 cm2V-1s-1, threshold voltage of 1.51 V, subthreshold swing of 0.42 V/decade, the excellent on/off current ratio is about 108and the positive bias stress stability of the InSnO nanofiber FET through Mg doping has been greatly improved. In addition, the InSnMgO nanofiber FET gas sensor exhibits acceptable gas selectivity and sensitivity to methanol gas at room temperature. In the methanol gas sensor test at room temperature, when the methanol gas concentration is 60 ppm at room temperature, the response value of the InSnMgO nanofiber FET gas sensor is 81.92; and when the methanol concentration is 5 ppm, the response value is still 1.21. This work provides an effective and novel way to build a gas sensor at room temperature and use it to detect methanol gas at room temperature.

ABSTRACT

With the rapid development of wearable artificial intelligence devices, there is an increasing demand for flexible oxide neuromorphic transistors with the solid electrolytes. To achieve high-performance flexible synaptic transistors, the solid electrolytes should exhibit good mechanical bending characteristics and high ion conductivity. However, the polymer-based electrolytes with good mechanical bending characteristics show poor ion conductivity (10-6-10-7S cm-1), which limits the performance of flexible synaptic transistors. Thus, it is urgent to improve the ion conductivity of the polymer-based electrolytes. In the work, a new strategy of electrospun Li0.33La0.557TiO3nanofibers-enhanced ion transport pathway is proposed to simultaneously improve the mechanical bending and ion conductivity of polyethylene oxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone-based solid electrolytes. The flexible InZnO synaptic transistors with Li0.33La0.557TiO3nanofibers-based solid electrolytes successfully simulated excitatory post-synaptic current, paired-pulse-facilitation, dynamic time filter, nonlinear summation, two-terminal input dynamic integration and logic function. This work is a useful attempt to develop high-performance synaptic transistors.

ABSTRACT

Countering the optical network 'capacity crunch' calls for a radical development in optical fibres that could simultaneously minimize nonlinearity penalties, chromatic dispersion and maximize signal launch power. Hollow-core fibres (HCF) can break the nonlinear Shannon limit of solid-core fibre and fulfil all above requirements, but its optical performance need to be significantly upgraded before they can be considered for high-capacity telecommunication systems. Here, we report a new HCF with conjoined-tubes in the cladding and a negative-curvature core shape. It exhibits a minimum transmission loss of 2 dB km-1 at 1512 nm and a <16 dB km-1 bandwidth spanning across the O, E, S, C, L telecom bands (1302-1637 nm). The debut of this conjoined-tube HCF, with combined merits of ultralow loss, broad bandwidth, low bending loss, high mode quality and simple structure heralds a new opportunity to fully unleash the potential of HCF in telecommunication applications.

ABSTRACT

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is able to achieve good target conformance with a limited dose to organs at risk (OARs); however, IMRT increases the irradiation volume and monitor units (MUs) required. The present study aimed to evaluate the use of an IMRT plan with fewer segments and MUs, while maintaining quality in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In the present study, two types of IMRT plan were therefore compared: The direct machine parameter optimization (DMPO)-RT method and the feedback constraint DMPO-RT (fc_DMPO-RT) method, which utilizes compensative feedback constraint in DMPO-RT and maintains optimization. Plans for 23 patients were developed with identical dose prescriptions. Each plan involved synchronous delivery to various targets, with identical OAR constraints, by means of 7 coplanar fields. The average dose, maximum dose, dose-volume histograms of targets and the OAR, MUs of the plan, the number of segments, delivery time and accuracy were subsequently compared. The fc_DMPO-RT exhibited superior dose distribution in terms of the average, maximum and minimum doses to the gross tumor volume compared with that of DMPO-RT (t=62.7, 20.5 and 22.0, respectively; P<0.05). The fc_DMPO-RT also resulted in a smaller maximum dose to the spinal cord (t=7.3; P<0.05), as well as fewer MUs, fewer segments and decreased treatment times than that of the DMPO-RT (t=6.2, 393.4 and 244.3, respectively; P<0.05). The fc_DMPO-RT maintained plan quality with fewer segments and MUs, and the treatment time was significantly reduced, thereby resulting in reduced radiation leakage and an enhanced curative effect. Therefore, introducing feedback constraint into DMPO may result in improved IMRT planning. In nasopharyngeal carcinoma specifically, feedback constraint resulted in the improved protection of OARs in proximity of targets (such as the brainstem and parotid) due to sharp dose distribution and reduced MUs.

ABSTRACT

To select a specifically binding peptide for imaging detection of human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), a phage-displayed 12-mer peptide library was used to screen the peptide that bind to ESCC cells specifically. After four rounds of bio-panning, the phage recovery rate gradually increased, and specific phage clones were effectively enriched. The 60 randomly selected phage clones were tested using cellular enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and 41 phage clones were identified as positive clones with the over 2.10 ratio of absorbance higher than other clones, IRP and PBS controls. From the sequencing results of the positive clones, 14 peptide sequences were obtained and ESCP9 consensus sequence was identified as the peptide with best affinity to ESCC cells via competitive inhibition, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. The results indicate that the peptide ESCP9 can bind to ESCC cells specifically and sensitively, and it is a potential candidate to be developed as an useful molecule to the imaging detection and targeting therapy for ESCC.

ABSTRACT

The aqueous dispersion behavior of ZrB2, SiC powders with B4C and C as sintering aids was investigated. Well co-dispersed suspension can be obtained in acidic solutions in presence of polyethyleneimine (PEI). The adsorption of PEI on the powder surface was measured by thermal gravimetric (TG) analysis. Rheological measurements displayed the effect of dispersant on the flow behavior of as-prepared slurries. An optimum condition was obtained with 1 wt % PEI. The viscosity of 40 vol % ZrB2-SiC-B4C-C (ZSBC) suspension at 100 s-1 was as low as 0.74 Pa·s, which was suitable for aqueous processing.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic Hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles were successfully synthesized at different concentration of Fe2+ by a co-precipitation method. The influences of concentration of doped ions and calcination temperature on the morphology and magnetic property were studied. The iron ions-doped HAP still kept its structure similar to conventional HAP and no second phases were detected. Results indicated that the doping of iron ions decreased the crystallinity and inhibited the c-axis growth and promoted the a-axis growth. HAP particles incorporated with 10% and 50% iron ions exhibited superparamagnetic and with 30% iron ions exhibited weak ferromagnetic characters. In addition, calcination temperature also increased the remnant.

ABSTRACT

Novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates with high SERS-activity are ideal for novel SERS sensors, detectors to detect illicitly sold narcotics and explosives. The key to the wider application of SERS technique is to develop plasmon resonant structure with novel geometries to enhance Raman signals and to control the periodic ordering of these structures over a large area to obtain reproducible Raman enhancement. In this work, a simple Ar(+)-ion sputtering route has been developed to fabricate silver nanoneedles arrays on silicon substrates for SERS-active substrates to detect trace-level illicitly sold narcotics. These silver nanoneedles possess a very sharp apex with an apex diameter of 15 nm and an apex angle of 20°. The SERS enhancement factor of greater than 10(10) was reproducibly achieved by the well-aligned nanoneedles arrays. Furthermore, ketamine hydrochloride molecules, one kind of illicitly sold narcotics, can be detected down to 27 ppb by using our SERS substrate within 3 s, indicating the sensitivity of our SERS substrates for trace amounts of narcotics and that SERS technology can become an important analytical technique in forensic laboratories because it can provide a rapid and nondestructive method for trace detection.

ABSTRACT

A simple Ar(+)-ion irradiation route has been developed to prepare gold nanoneedle arrays on glass substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-active substrates. The nanoneedles exhibited very sharp tips with an apex diameter of 20 nm. These arrays were evaluated as potential SERS substrates using malachite green molecules and exhibited a SERS enhancement factor of greater than 10(8), which is attributed to the localized electron field enhancement around the apex of the needle and the surface plasmon coupling originating from the periodic structure. This work demonstrates a new technique for producing controllable and reproducible SERS substrates potentially applicable for chemical and biological assays.

ABSTRACT

An ordered dental enamel-like structure of hydroxyapatite (HAp) was achieved through a solution mediated solid-state conversion process with organic phosphate surfactant and gelatin as the mediating agent. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) tests demonstrated uniform sizes in the obtained apatite nanorods which arranged in parallel to each other along the c-axis and formed organized microarchitectural units over 10 microm in size. The sizes of the synthetic hydroxyapatite nanorods were similar to that observed in enamel from human teeth. The formation and regulation of the orientation and size of HAp nanorods might lead to a better understanding of the biomineralization process for the preparation of high performance biomaterials.

ABSTRACT

Porous hydroxyapatite (HAP) ceramics with different morphologies were fabricated by the freeze casting method. The morphologies of HAP ceramics were modified by adjusting the concentration of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) additive in the HAP slurries. HAP ceramics without PVA additive were composed of non-interconnected macroscopic lamellar pores and porous ceramic walls. With PVA additive, the HAP ceramics were made up of small lamellar pores or three-dimensional reticulate pores and porous ceramic walls. PVA additive had no effect on the phase composition of HAP ceramics. The open porosity and pore connectivity were improved because of the addition of PVA.

ABSTRACT

The dispersion of TiN powders in aqueous media was studied through XPS, zeta potential, adsorption, sedimentation, and rheology measurements. XPS showed that there are TiO2, TiN, and TiOxNy sites on the TiN particle surface. In the absence of dispersant, the isoelectric point (pH(IEP)) of the TiN particles was at pH 2.2. Based on the surface properties of TiN particles, a cationic polymer, polyethylene imine (PEI), was selected as a dispersant. In the presence of PEI, the pH(IEP) shifted from pH 2.2 to pH 11.10. It was evidenced that TiN slurries could be stabilized around pH 9.50 with 1-2 wt% PEI as dispersant. Subsequently, TiN slurries with solid content as high as 57 vol% were developed and exhibited dilatant rheological behavior at high shear rate. The results showed that PEI is an effective dispersant for TiN in aqueous media.

ABSTRACT

Porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics with controlled pore characteristics were fabricated using slip casting method by mixing PMMA with HAp powder. The optimum conditions of HAp slip for slip casting was achieved by employing various experimental techniques, zeta potential and sedimentation, as a function of pH of the slips in the pH range of 4-12. HAp suspensions displayed an absolute maximum in zeta potential values and a minimum in sedimentation height at pH 11.5. The optimal amount of dispersant for the HAp suspensions was found at 1.0 wt% according to the viscosity of 25 vol% HAp slurry. The rheological behaviour of HAp slurry displays a shear-thinning behavior without thixotropy, which is needed in slip casting processing. The pore characteristics of sintered porous hydroxyapatite bioceramics can be controlled by added PMMA particle size and volume. The obtained ceramics exhibit higher strength than those obtained by dry pressing.
