ABSTRACT

Introduction: Even though health-related quality of life (HRQL) and mood states are key indicators of the well-being of adolescents, their relationship has not been analyzed in students from Antioquia, Colombia. Objective: To determine HRQL and mood states in schoolchildren from Antioquia. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1,957 schoolchildren and adolescents aged between 9 and 20 years. Measurements of HRQL, anxiety, depression, hostility and happiness, physical activity, sedentary behavior, parental social support, and socioeconomic status were applied. Results: A high quality of life (HQL) was observed more frequently in male participants, students with parental support, physically active, and those belonging to medium and high socioeconomic status. HQL decreased 15% as their age increased by one year. Also, HQL was reduced when depression, anxiety, and sedentary behavior increased. Furthermore, depression and anxiety levels were higher in women, older students, as well as in those without parental control and with sedentary behavior. Conclusions: HRQL is associated with mood states, physical activity, sedentary behavior, and parental support. In contrast, mood states are related to gender, parental support, HQL, and sedentary lifestyle.

ABSTRACT

Teacher autonomy support is related to improved student learn-ing. In higher education, few studies relate classroom contextual factors, such as teacher emphasis on content usefulness, and students' motivational characteristics. The aim was to test a multilevel model about the relation between the extent of teachers’ emphasis on the usefulness of class con-tent with student autonomy, and, in turn, on motivation to learn. The par-ticipants were 3033 university students enrolled from 1st to 4th grade of Sciences of the Physical Activity and Sport, from universities in Spain (N = 602), Portugal (N = 469), Mexico (N = 1177), Chile (N = 372), and Brazil (N = 413). A multilevel structural equation model was performed, in which participants answered questions about the teacher's emphasis on the use-fulness of class content, basic psychological need for autonomy, and moti-vation to learn. At the group and individual levels, the hypothesis is that the teacher's emphasis on the usefulness of class content predict the stu-dent autonomy, in turn, student autonomy predicts student motivation to learn. Results found at the group level and at the individual level the strength of teacher emphasis on class content predicted student autonomy; student autonomy predicted student motivation to learn.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Considering methodological difficulties and inconsistent results of previous studies on it, the objective was to describe the change in nursing student self-esteem over time and its predictors, using a sound theoretical framework and relevant tools to measure and analyse the data. METHOD: Cohort study. Self-esteem and related factors were assessed in nursing students in a 4-year bachelor's program at the beginning of each academic year from 2017 to 2019 and at the end of the academic year in May 2020, using he revised version of Self-liking/Self-competence scale of Tafarodi and Swann. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed via generalized linear mixed modelling. RESULTS: Self-esteem was moderate at the beginning of the program: 50.40 (9.10). It increased slightly over time: 51.15 (9.11) at T1; 51.64 (0.49) at T2; and 51.39 (10.79) at T3 (p = .002). Baseline variables that predicted self-esteem change were gender, secondary school graduation level, state anxiety, intent to continue, and self-efficacy. Assessing and improving those last variables via a strong career plan could boost student achievement and increase retention during and after training. CONCLUSION: Nursing student self-esteem can be assessed using a bidimensional model, with a two-factor scale like Tafarodi & Swann's self-liking/self-competence scale. Generalized linear mixed model is a useful way to correlate large sets of longitudinal data.

ABSTRACT

With the advent of learning and knowledge technologies (LKT), the role of the teacher evolved from instructor to facilitator, and the student went from being a mere receiver to a creator. One of the technologies that has significantly transformed all aspects of everyday life, including education, is artificial intelligence (AI). In the educational environment, especially in higher education, new tools are made available capable of transforming the traditional processes of teaching and learning and with it, the development of students' competencies. This study offers a perspective on the use of LKT and AI in the nursing career, as well as its implications in teaching, based on scientific literature and the experience developed in the institution. The authors' experience with its use as part of the research projects "Innovative bimodal teaching for the development of generic competencies in university students" and "Bimodal teaching system for the development of learning and knowledge technologies" is described. which is part of the research program "Curriculum, innovation, education and training". The advantages of its use are shown, and the important ethical and practical challenges are reflected. The authors aim to provide valuable information on how technological and artificial intelligence tools can be successfully incorporated into the educational environment to develop specific and transversal competencies in university students, while promoting responsible and ethical use. The authors consider that the use of artificial intelligence in higher education should not be prohibited, but that its use should be regulated through policies that promote ethical and responsible use and that, in addition, teachers and students should be taught and taught to read and write about the proper use of this powerful tool, which would help in the teaching and learning process and the development of competencies.

ABSTRACT

University Radiology training has been carried out for years out of the Radiology Departments, where radiologists play their professional role. However, the educational needs and the leadership of the Scientific Societies make the Radiology Departments to be involved more and more in that training, though it has to be done in overloaded professional environments where medical students can be seen as a drawback. Nevertheless, radiologists must play an important role in the Radiology training of the future doctors for optimising the use of diagnostic imaging techniques and enhance the future of the specialty by bringing to our Departments those medical students who had demonstrated the most adequate personal profiles. The Radiology Department is that place to succeed by increasing the healthcare outcomes, the research results and the visibility of Radiology through a fruitful interaction between radiologists and medical students.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To analyse a problem-based learning experience (PBL) in the sixth year of medicine, within a course organised in successive rotations of 12 school days for 7 annual groups. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Each group was divided into subgroups of 6-8 students. Each subgroup was assigned two cases with radiographic images that they had to prepare and present in a joint session in which the students discussed each case and the teacher acted as moderator, without providing solutions. Finally, they had 15 days to complete the debate in an online forum and prepare a written report on each case. RESULTS: During 6 consecutive years, 1001 students participated, whose annual grades ranged between 7.7 ±â€¯1.6 and 9.0 ±â€¯0.7 (mean ±â€¯standard deviation). No correlation was found between the degree of difficulty assigned to the cases and the mean score obtained by each group (R2 = 0.0115). Sixty-six point two percent completed a questionnaire rating various aspects of this experience above 4 out of 5 points and providing overall scores above 8.3 out of 10 points in the different years. The students found this experience appropriate to the objectives of the subject and useful for their educational needs. CONCLUSIONS: PBL allows students to acquire skills of understanding, reasoning and deepening in radiological diagnosis. This study demonstrates that an experience based on PBL can be included in a radiology course organised in a traditional way, allowing students to be graded regardless of the difficulty of the cases.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The prolongation and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an uncertain and devastating panorama in many populations, and the evidence shows a high prevalence of mental health problems in medical students. The objective was to evaluate the association between mood disorders and sleep quality (SQ) in Peruvian medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 310 medical students from a private university in Peru. The SQ was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), while mood disorders were evaluated using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21). All information was collected by online surveys and then analysed in the R programming language. RESULTS: The SQ results measured by PSQI were poor in 83.9% of the medical students. In the Poison regression analysis, the results of the bivariate analysis in men show that all mood disorders found the prevalence of poor SQ. However, in the multivariate analysis only stress (PRa=1.30; 95% CI, 1.08-1.57; P<0.01) and anxiety (PRa=1.34; 95% CI, 1.09-1.56; P <0.01) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. Women had a similar pattern in bivariate analysis, whereas in multivariate analysis, only severe stress (PRa=1.15; 95% CI, 1.01-1.29; P <0.05) increased the prevalence of poor SQ. CONCLUSIONS: This study allows us to observe the consequences that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on medical students in Peru. It also revealed a population group vulnerable to poor quality of sleep and bad mood, which in the future will impact on health. It is suggested to educate medical students about the importance of proper sleep hygiene and the consequences of poor sleep hygiene practices.

A questionnaire of 14 questions was designed and administered to 1486 first-year undergraduates. The principal axes factoring method with oblique rotation was applied and a confirmatory factor analysis was carried out. Reliability was calculated through internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha and item-total correlation for the global scale and its subscales. RESULTS: A 14-item scale was constructed, with two dimensions. Its Cronbach's alpha was 0.872, and 0.852, and 0.718 for its subscales. The adjustment values of the confirmatory factor analysis were adequate. CONCLUSIONS: The attitude towards health promotion scale has shown to have adequate psychometric properties. It is an instrument that will help to detect referents and health assets for future interventions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Medical education can make it difficult for students to take actions to improve their health. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of the university context on self-care behaviors and quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was used, with surveys being combined to assess self-care and quality of life, with in-depth interviews to explore cultural influences and perceptions. Statistical analysis and qualitative data coding were carried out, with methods being integrated through network analysis. RESULTS: Self-care scores exceeded 50 points, and quality of life scores exceeded 60 points. Medical students' context is shaped by motivations, expectations, skills, and goals that influence identity formation and contribute to the medical profession. CONCLUSIONS: There is a positive connection between self-care practices and quality of life. However, academic stress can potentially disrupt self-care routines. Furthermore, an association between obesity and a decrease in quality of life stands out, which emphasizes the need for health promotion actions.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity acts as an adjuvant in the treatment of numerous diseases and in the promotion of healthy aging. Increasing longevity entails an increase in the demand for professionals who prescribe physical activity, specifically physiotherapists and physical-activity educators. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this study was to explore the perceptions of a group of third- and fourth-year Physiotherapy students (n=9) and Sport Sciences students (n=5), and experts who work with older adults (n=3) about their knowledge of the older adult population and healthy aging. The secondary objectives were to: (a) explore what knowledge future professionals need about physical activity programming and about physical activity programs aimed at maintaining and improving health among older adults; (b) explore what would be the best methodology to acquire such knowledge; and (c) explore whether a relationship is perceived between knowledge about the older adult population and motivation to work with this population group. METHODS: Two discussion groups with students and three interviews with experts were conducted. Discussion groups and interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed through a reflexive thematic analysis, following the steps described by Braun and Clarke (2021). RESULTS: Three themes were identified from the discussion groups: (1) conception and ideas about older adults, (2) skills and knowledge perceived as important, and (3) proposals for motivational intervention addressed to the older population. Four themes were identified from the interviews with experts: (1) characteristics of the future professional, (2) physical activity programs for older people: the recipe for success, (3) the role of enjoyment as key to success, and (4) barriers/obstacles along the path. CONCLUSION: Students of both degrees and experts believe that more practical training opportunities are needed, to enable students to interact with the older population and get to know their needs, motivations, and barriers, to increase physical activity levels in this population group.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTBackground: Sexual violence (SV) is a persistent issue on US college campuses, particularly among college student-athletes. Strategies to address SV are urgently needed. Yet, prior research shows that many university practices can be more harmful than helpful to SV survivors and necessitates a reimagination of how institutions support SV survivors. Survivor-centred approaches may be one way to effectively address SV for students, including student-athletes, across college campuses. Objective: This qualitative study explored campus personnel experiences with and perceptions of survivor-centred SV prevention and intervention policies and practices on college campuses and examined how these approaches serve SV survivors, including college student-athletes.Methods: As part of a larger study on campus SV and student-athletes across four institutions, semi-structured interviews with 22 representatives from athletic departments, campus advocacy, and Title IX were conducted. Guided by phenomenology, a thematic analysis approach was used to identify key patterns in survivor-centred SV prevention and intervention policies and practices. Participant demographic data were analysed descriptively. Results: Most participants identified as white (72.2%), heterosexual (63.6%), women (68.2%), and were an average of 41.8 years old (SD = 10.2). The majority were in positions associated with athletic departments (63.6%), and they had been in their role for an average of 5.6 years (SD = 6.6). Through thematic analysis, three main themes were identified: (1) education & accessibility; (2) interpersonal relationships & individual well-being; and (3) campus and societal norms. Conclusions: The findings from this study highlight clear policy and practice recommendations for survivor-centred SV prevention and intervention on college campuses, such as accessible, applicable SV training and the implementation of survivor-centred approaches. Further research is needed to understand existing survivor-centred practices and the facilitators and barriers to their implementation across institutions and within athletic departments.

Sexual violence is a persistent issue on US college campuses, particularly among college student-athletes. Strategies to address SV are urgently needed. Survivor-centred approaches may offer solutions to better serve survivors of sexual violence, including student-athletes.Through interviews with athletic department, Title IX, and campus advocacy personnel, three themes were identified related to developing and implementing survivor-centred approaches: (1) education & accessibility; (2) interpersonal relationships & individual well-being; and (3) campus and societal norms.Further research is needed to understand existing survivor-centred practices and the facilitators and barriers to their implementation across institutions, particularly for college student-athletes.

ABSTRACT

This research aimed to assess the mediating role of resilience in the relationship between social support and academic burnout. To do so, a cross-sectional study was conducted with undergraduate students enrolled at a public university in Paraná, Brazil, who were participants in the GraduaUEL project - Analysis of Health and Lifestyle Habits of Undergraduate Students at the State University of Londrina, interviewed in the year 2019. The dependent variable of this study was academic exhaustion, measured through the Copenhagen Inventory Burnout questionnaire (CBI-S). The independent variable was social support, measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), and the mediating effect of resilience was assessed using the CD-RISC-1 scale. Both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to obtain the model with the best fit using Mplus software, with a 95% confidence interval (CI95%). Total social support significantly and positively influenced resilience, while resilience had a significantly negative effect on burnout. It was observed that the direct effect of social support on burnout and the indirect effect of social support on burnout through resilience were significant, with resilience mediating this relationship by approximately 54.9%. In conclusion, social support and resilience have an impact on academic burnout; thus, reducing university students' exhaustion can be achieved by enhancing both social support and resilience among them.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Medicine and Veterinary are careers with high academic demands that tend to cause high levels of stressamong students. Objective: This study investigated the role of strategies used by students to deal with stress.Subjects and methods. An online survey was administered to 244 medical and veterinary students at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, at the beginning of their first academic cycle and four months later. The survey included the perceived stress scale-10, the coping strategies inventory, as well as a section that inquired about sociodemographic and academic characteristics. Results: An increase in the stress of the students in both degrees was noted but this was only statistically significant (t(140) = –3.4, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = –0.29) among students enrolled in veterinary. Perception of higher financial resources to cover tuition and fees, greater life and school balance, increased problem-solving and problem-avoidance, less emotional expression, wishful thinking, and self-criticism, mentioned at the beginning of the academic cycle were significantly associated with a lower perception of stress four months later (F(15,228) = 14.16, p < 0.0001).Conclusion: It is highlighted that schools should incorporate activities during the training process of future doctors and veterinarians, focused on guiding and motivating them to develop and use strategies that allow them to adequately handle challenging situations. In this way, they will be able to avoid increased stress levels and the possible negative impact on their academic performance and mental health.(AU)
