ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: To develop a calcium silicate (CaSi)-based cement containing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and cement deliver device for new root canal filling technique, and to assess the flow behavior, leakage, and root canal filling quality of CaSi containing DMSO. METHODS: CaSi containing DMSO (CSC-DMSO) and CaSi containing PEG (CSC-PEG) were prepared, and the flow characteristics of both cements were compared in gypsum and resin channels using a high-speed camera. Eight root canals were obturated by CSC-DMSO or CSC-PEG using a cement delivery device, and root canal filling quality was assessed in terms of filling length using periapical radiographs. The filling length was evaluated by 'apico-coronal extension,' measuring length in reference to apical constriction. Microleakage was measured for thirty human molars that were randomly filled with CSC-DMSO, CSC-PEG, or gutta-percha and AH plus. Preliminary obturation of CSC-DMSO with cement delivery device in human teeth was analyzed in terms of filling length and void, using periapical radiographs. Statistical analysis was performed with the Kruskal Wallis test for simulated root canal fillings and one-way ANOVA for leakage test. RESULTS: The flow speed of CSC-DMSO reduced in gypsum channels compared to resin channels, but CSC-PEG did not exhibit significant differences in the channels. The median absolute value of apico-coronal extension was significantly lower in CSC-DMSO compared to CSC-PEG (p < 0.05). Microleakage did not statistically differ between the groups (p > 0.05). In the preliminary obturation, the mean apico-coronal extension of CSC-DMSO was -0.297 ± 0.724 mm, while CSC-PEG was not feasible due to excess apical extrusions. CONCLUSIONS: CSC-DMSO could be considered as an alternative filling material for root canal obturation.

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Many people tend to carry their bags or baggage on only one side of their body. Due to smartphone use, people also tend to walk bent forward in a kyphotic posture. In this study, we aimed to assess trunk muscle activity changes due to weight-bearing, carried in the left or right hand, and using three different gait postures. Materials and Methods: We recruited 27 healthy participants (aged 19−75 years) with no history of LBP within the last 6 months before study participation. Electromyographic activities of the lower back and the abdominal muscles of the participants were evaluated using four-channel surface electromyography (EMG). Surface EMG recordings were obtained from four trunk muscles, including the flexor (rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO)) and extensor muscles (lumbar erector spinae (LE), and the superficial lumbar multifidus (LM)), during unilateral weight-bearing tasks and with different gait postures (normal gait, with a sway back, and thoracic kyphosis). Results: In the "unilateral weight-bearing task", there was a significant difference in the activity of all the trunk muscles between the weight-bearing limb side and the opposite side (p < 0.05). The activation of the left trunk muscle was greater than that of the right trunk muscle when the dumbbell was lifted using the right hand. The other side showed the same result. In the "gait posture task" performed by the participants using a sway-back posture, the RA and EO had a higher level of activity in the stance and swing phases compared with that in a neutral gait (p < 0.05). Moreover, in the participants with a thoracic kyphosis posture, the LE and LM had a higher level of activity compared with that in a neutral gait (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Our results indicate that abnormal gait posture and unilateral weight-bearing tasks may impair the balance of trunk muscles, increasing the incidence of LBP. However, further large-scale, prospective, controlled studies are warranted to corroborate our results.

ABSTRACT

Red-pigmented rice was germinated and processed to develop germinated red rice tea, and the changes in physicochemical, bioactive, and microbial properties due to germination and roasting were investigated. The moisture and crude ash contents of red rice decreased after germination and roasting. Crude protein and crude fat contents increased after germination but slightly decreased after roasting. Total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities) increased following germination and heat treatment. However, the increased levels of γ-amino butyric acid after germination significantly decreased during the subsequent roasting step. In addition, total bacteria, yeast, and mold counts increased during the germination process but decreased after heat treatment as compared to those in the original grain; Escherichia coli was not detected. Therefore, germination and subsequent roasting could effectively enhance the contents of the most bioactive compounds and maintain microbial stability in red-pigmented rice.

ABSTRACT

Wheatgrass and barley grass are freshly sprouted leaves of wheat and barley seeds and are rich sources of phytochemicals. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of drought stress on the biochemical compounds and antioxidant activities of barley grass and wheatgrass extracts. The grass was cultivated in an organic soil growing medium with different levels of drought stress (a control with 100% water holding capacity (WHC), mild drought stress with 75% WHC, moderate drought stress with 50% WHC, and severe drought stress with 25% WHC) in a growth chamber by controlling temperature (20/15 °C, day/night), light (12/12 h, light/dark; intensity 150 µmol m-2  s-1 with quantum dot light-emitting diodes), and relative humidity (60%) for 7 days. The drought stress showed increased levels of biochemical compounds, especially phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C, in both barley grass and wheatgrass extracts. The wheatgrass extracts showed 1.38-1.67 times higher phenolics, flavonoids, and vitamin C contents than the barley grass extracts did. The antioxidant (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity, and nitrite-scavenging activity) and antioxidant enzymes (guaiacol peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione reductase) were the highest under severe drought stress in both barley grass and wheatgrass extracts; and the wheatgrass extracts showed 1.20-5.70 times higher antioxidant enzyme activities than the barley grass extracts did. Proper drought-stress treatment of barley grass and wheatgrass may be a convenient and efficient method to increase biochemical compounds and antioxidants in our diet to exploit the related health benefits. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is rapidly becoming a global health concern. Proteomics technology was employed to examine HIV infected plasma samples in an attempt to identify disease-associated proteins. By comparison with normal and HIV positive plasma samples, at least eight proteins were significantly changed in HIV infected plasma. In particular, apolipoprotein AI presents a heterogeneous change in expression level with different isoforms. Apolipoprotein AI could be a useful biomarker for HIV diagnosis.
