ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The quality control of serological assays remains controversial. The aim of this project was to describe the problems associated with a working model for controlling these assays and solutions, including using a source of well-defined targets and acceptable limits, a process to identify lot-to-lot reagent variation and an interpretation of the result that accounted for the clinical situation. False-negative results are problematic but can be reduced by identifying and comparing reagent lot variation with previous results. METHODS: The components of the Quality Assurance strategy are the following: Lot-to-lot reagent and calibrator variation assessment; dynamic, big-data approach to determine accurate targets and acceptable limits for manufacturer-provided QC material; negative QC monitoring process; use of commutable EQA with a sufficient method subgroup size to assess bias; clinical assessment of any statistically flagged error; and provision of support to the clinician for the interpretation of results. RESULTS: The model described has been used for twelve months, and acceptable variation has been maintained. CONCLUSIONS: The paper presents a solution that emphasizes the early detection of reagent lot variation and patient risk rather than instrument control. Reducing the risk of a false result to patients requires optimal assay quality control and an effective mechanism to support the clinician's use of these results in diagnosis and monitoring. The problems of serological assays are well-known, but there remain few integrated solutions in the literature.

ABSTRACT

Foodborne pathogens continue to be a major health concern worldwide. Culture-dependent methodologies are still considered the gold standard to perform pathogen detection and quantification. These methods present several drawbacks, such as being time-consuming and labor intensive. The implementation of real-time PCR has allowed to overcome these limitations, and even reduce the cost associated with the analyses, due to the possibility of simultaneously and accurately detecting several pathogens in one single assay, with results comparable to those obtained by classical approaches. In this chapter, a protocol for the simultaneous detection of two of the most important foodborne pathogens, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes, is described.

ABSTRACT

Chinese diesel trucks are the main contributors to NOx and particulate matter (PM) vehicle emissions. An increase in diesel trucks could aggravate air pollution and damage human health. The Chinese government has recently implemented a series of emission control technologies and measures for air quality improvement. This paper summarizes recent control technologies and measures for diesel truck emissions in China and introduces the comprehensive application of control technologies and measures in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and surrounding regions. Remote online monitoring technology has been adopted according to the China VI standard for heavy-duty diesel trucks, and control measures such as transportation structure adjustment and heavy pollution enterprise classification control continue to support the battle action plan for pollution control. Perspectives and suggestions are provided for promoting pollution control and supervision of diesel truck emissions: adhere to the concept of overall management and control, vigorously promote the application of systematic and technological means in emission monitoring, continuously facilitate cargo transportation structure adjustment and promote new energy freight vehicles. This paper aims to accelerate the implementation of control technologies and measures throughout China. China is endeavouring to control diesel truck exhaust pollution. China is willing to cooperate with the world to protect the global ecological environment.

ABSTRACT

Trans-chalcone (TC) is a flavonoid precursor characterized by a wide spectrum of action, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, no validated methods are available in official compendia for the analysis of this substance. Thus, the aim of this work was to develop and validate a simple, fast, and reproducible spectrophotometric method for the analysis of TC in raw material, and in topical pharmaceutical formulation containing TC. The established conditions were: methanol as extracting solvent, and detection wavelength of 309 nm by UV spectrophotometer. All tests followed the rules of Resolution RDC 166, 2017. The proposed method was selective. Linearity was demonstrated in the concentration range of 1 to 8 µg/mL (r = 0.999). Repeatability and intermediate precision were confirmed by low relative standard deviation values of 1.53% and 2.70% for TC, and of 1.73% and 2.91% for formulation containing TC. Accuracy, evaluated through recovery test, was adequate, with minimum of 98.24% and maximum of 100.23% of recovery. It was observed that the small deliberate modifications done did not interfere with the results, demonstrating the method is robust. The results showed that the method was considered suitable for the intended purpose, inexpensive, easy to apply, selective, linear, precise, accurate, and robust for the determination TC, and pharmaceutical formulation containing TC. Thus, the method developed satisfies the need for an analytical method for the determination of TC, and topical formulation containing TC, being effective, innovative and able to aid in the development of the pharmaceutical field.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Radiography students complete professional placements in various clinical settings and must adhere to distinct infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols. The aim of this study was to explore radiography students' training, knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) relating to IPC in the use of contrast media injectors in computed tomography (CT). METHODS: An online survey study was undertaken with radiography students enrolled at two Australian universities. Survey questions related to contrast media training and KAP regarding IPC in CT. Data was summarised using descriptive statistics, with comparisons between experience in public and private practice. One free-text response question focused on non-adherence to IPC best practice, analysed using content analysis. RESULTS: In total, 40 students completed the survey (9% response rate). Reports of IPC and contrast media equipment training was high, with disposition for further training. Regarding IPC knowledge, 65% of students responded correctly to all 'knowledge' items (individual scores range: 60-100%). Low consensus was observed regarding whether gloves replace the need for hand hygiene and if CT contrast tubing poses risk to healthcare workers (85% each). Mean scores ranged from 41% to 100% regarding identification of sterile syringe and tubing components. Responses to the open-ended question were categorised into four themes: 'High non-adherence risk working conditions', 'attitudes and practice', 'knowledge', and 'prioritise good IPC practice'. CONCLUSIONS: Radiography students demonstrate varied comprehension of IPC regarding contrast media equipment, and results suggest need for collaborative efforts between academic institutions and clinical training sites to integrate IPC protocols into curricula and on-site training.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a major asthma comorbidity; however, it is not well recognized in Japan. Moreover, it has rarely been reported in the asthma population, and its clinical characteristics are unclear. We aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics of DB as a comorbidity in patients with asthma in Japan. Questionnaire surveys were conducted among patients with asthma at medical facilities in three regions of Japan (Niigata, Kumamoto, and Tokyo). METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire survey targeting patients with asthma who had regularly visited medical institutions and their doctors was conducted from September to November 2021. The questionnaire addressed the control status and method of treatment. The diagnosis of DB was evaluated using the Nijmegen questionnaire (NQ). RESULTS: There were 2087 eligible participants. Based on their NQ scores, 217 patients were classified into the DB group (NQ ≥ 19). There were significant differences with respect to sex, disease duration, Asthma Control Test (ACT) scores, Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scores, type-2 biomarkers, pulmonary function indices, treatment methods, severity, and asthma exacerbations in the previous year between the DB and non-DB groups. In the multivariate analysis, there were significant differences in sex, disease duration (≥15 y), ACT scores (<20), and PHQ-9 scores (≥10). The cluster analysis of cases with DB classified the population into four clusters. CONCLUSIONS: The asthma population with DB exhibited several characteristics, including depression and poorly controlled asthma. Further large-scale interventional investigations with longer follow-up periods are necessary to verify these findings.

ABSTRACT

By reversing the questions and focusing on the perpetrator's behavior, the notion of coercive control revolutionizes the apprehension and understanding of violence within the family for all its members. This heuristic approach, which represents a genuine paradigm shift, has legal, semiological and diagnostic effects. It creates a new professional ecosystem that enables us to respond differently to two fundamental missions: caring and justice.

ABSTRACT

Coercive control is a process of violence in which one person acts in such a way as to subject the other to persistent controlling behavior. In the majority of cases, these are men, and the targets are their spouses and children. The psychotraumatic consequences are innumerable, and need to be understood before they can be identified and treated. The repercussions of coercive control are numerous, whether somatic, psychological, familial, social, professional or academic. This article describes the psychotraumatic consequences for both the victim and the children.

ABSTRACT

Combating domestic violence involves mobilizing a myriad of players throughout the victim's life cycle, including children: health professionals, social workers, law enforcement officers, judges, associations, etc. The mechanisms behind this kind of violence are complex, and every professional needs to have a good understanding of them to be able to identify and provide support. To be more effective, the fight against domestic violence must continue to be thought through. For example, the Observatoire des Violences Intrafamiliales of the Conseil Départemental de l'Allier organized an awareness-raising day on a new concept - coercive control - which is set to make its entry into the Penal Code, and which could change everything.

ABSTRACT

Able to work in any sector, with patients of any age and from any socioeconomic or cultural background, the state-qualified nurse is a front-line player, likely to come into contact with victims of violence between (ex) intimate partners. In the current context of growing awareness of the concept of coercive control, this caregiver has a vital role to play in preventing this health and social scourge.

ABSTRACT

Motivated by the benefits that recent finite-time continuous control approaches have proven to give rise, this work aims to design a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) type control scheme for the global regulation of constrained-input mechanical systems that incorporates design features characteristic of such finite-time continuous algorithms. This is proven to be achieved through a more general PID type control structure that incorporates exponential weights on the P and D type terms, through which such control actions are permitted to loose Lipschitz-continuity at the desired equilibrium values. This entails an important challenge consisting on the introduction of an appropriate analytical framework and the development of a suitable closed-loop analysis through which the resulting design is properly supported. The study is complemented by experimental tests which show that appropriate (less-than-unity) values on the incorporated exponential weights indeed give rise to closed-loop improvements characteristic of finite-time continuous control approaches, such as reduction of overshoot on the position error responses and of the control effort, alleviating such a performance adjustment task.

ABSTRACT

Peer presence influences risk-taking behavior, particularly in adolescence. Based on the dual system model, this event-related potential study examined whether and how the presence of a peer displayed a preference for risky behavior would increase adolescents' risk-taking by disrupting their cognitive control processes in either emotional or non-emotional contexts. A sample of 106 adolescents (17-19 years of age) completed two Stoop tasks and a Balloon Analog Risk Task under three peer presence conditions. Results revealed that compared to other conditions, the presence of a risk-averse peer caused adolescents to make safer decisions through improving their conflict monitoring (more negative N200-diff), whereas a risk-preference peer's presence led adolescents to more risky decisions through disrupting their conflict resolution (more positive N450-diff) but they were only observed on the Emotional Stroop task. These findings suggest that different peer presence contexts could increase or decrease adolescents' risk-taking behaviors by influencing their cognitive control under an emotional context rather than in a non-emotional context.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Clindamycin (CLIN), an antibiotic sold in the form of capsules, injectable solution, gel, and lotion, is easily soluble in water and ethanol. However, it lacks eco-efficient methods for evaluating pharmaceutical products. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: The objective of this review is to provide an overview of the analytical methods present both in the literature and in official compendia for evaluating pharmaceutical matrices based on CLIN in the context of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC). RESULTS: Firstly, microbiological methods for evaluating the potency of CLIN final products were not found, which already shows the need to develop new methods. Among the methods found, which are all physicalchemical, the most used method is HPLC (71%) followed by UV-Vis (14%). Among the targets of the methods, capsules and raw materials were the most studied (33% each). Among the choices of analytical conditions for the methods, acetonitrile is the preferred solvent (27.7%), even though CLIN is easily soluble in ethanol. CONCLUSION: Thus, the gap in eco-friendly and sustainable analytical methods is a reality and an opportunity for analytical development centers to provide means for evaluating the quality of CLIN-based products.

ABSTRACT

Vibration control is extremely important for countless mechanical systems. Inerter is a two-terminal dynamic element proposed in 2002, based on analogy between mechanical system and electric system. Dynamic characteristic of an ideal inerter is pure inertia. Force applied on each terminal of an inerter is directly proportional to relative acceleration of two terminals. Since inerter was put forward, it has made significant progress in vibration control systems. The paper is a review about physical realizations of inerter as well as inerter-based vibration control. Physical realizations and applications in vibration control of inerter are focused. First, the develop of inerter and typical physical realizations of inerter are introduced. The normative derivation processes based on Lagrange equation method of the dynamic relationships in the different inerters are summarized. And then, three categories of common inerter-based vibration control systems are explained. Finally, research trend of physical realizations of inerter are summarized, and the possible researches on inerter-based vibration control are discussed.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Female adolescents are more prone to depression compared with male adolescents, and depression is often associated with poor attentional control and problematic internet use (PIU). Attentional control includes both focusing and shifting functions. Focusing refers to the ability to direct attention to a task despite distractions. Shifting refers to the ability to flexibly switch attention between different tasks. This study examines the mediating role of attentional focusing and shifting between depression and PIU. METHODS: Female high school and college students (n = 476) in Taiwan participated in a survey administered at three time points over a seven-month period. The single- and two- mediator models examined their joint mediation effects. RESULTS: The results showed that the direct effect of depression on PIU was significant. The indirect effects also showed that attentional focusing was a negative partial mediator in the relationship between depression and PIU, while attentional shifting was not one. CONCLUSION: Informed by attentional theory and digital emotion regulation, addressing depression to mitigate its negative impact on attentional control and negative emotions is crucial. The potential impact, whether harmful or beneficial, of adolescents carefully selecting their online activities to reduce the risk of PIU remains contentious. Given the focus on Taiwanese adolescent girls during the COVID-19 pandemic, further research is needed to extend the applicability of the theory to other periods without being affected by COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a novel user-operated audiometry method allowing users full control in determining their pure-tone hearing thresholds. DESIGN: Comparative study. Participants were recruited from a hearing clinic after undergoing manual audiometry (six frequencies). They then performed test-retests of a new test (slider audiometry, eight frequencies) and completed the System Usability Scale questionnaire. STUDY SAMPLE: 37 adult participants, including 30 hearing-impaired and seven normal-hearing individuals. RESULTS: Mean (SD) threshold differences for octave frequencies between 250 to 2000 Hz between manual and slider audiometry ranged from -7.8 (6.6) to -5.7 (6.5) dB and were significant. For 4000 and 8000 Hz mean differences were -0.3 (8.4) and 0.0 (9.7) dB and insignificant. Standard deviations ranged from 6.5 to 9.7 dB across six tested frequencies. Slider test-retest mean threshold differences ranged from -1.4 (4.7) to 0.3 (6.0) dB across eight tested frequencies, with standard deviations ranging from 4.1 to 8.5 dB. The average usability score for the slider audiometry was 88.3. CONCLUSION: When compared to manual audiometry, the slider audiometry demonstrated validity at 4000 and 8000 Hz but found significantly lower thresholds for octave frequencies between 250 to 2000 Hz. Test-retests of the new method revealed small mean differences and acceptable SDs.
