ABSTRACT

Estuaries are constantly subject to continuous environmental impacts of human activities, such as fisheries, port or industry, and domestic sewage, with fish being one of the most affected aquatic animals, reflecting the impacts directly on their bodies. Thus, the aim of this study was to carry out the biomonitoring of an estuary located on the Amazonian Equatorial Coast through analysis of PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in the water, in addition to trace metals, histopathological alterations and analysis of erythrocyte micronuclei in Sciades herzbergii. S. herzbergii was used as a model species, due to its estuarine-resident behavior. Gonad and gill samples were subjected to histopathological evaluations. The quantification of trace metals was performed in samples of skeletal muscles of the animals collected, where concentrations of Lead (Pb), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Cadmium (Cd), Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe) and Aluminum (Al) were found. Except for Cadmium (Cd), all the concentrations were above the recommended limits. The PAHs analysis revealed the presence of Naphthalene and Acenaphthene in the water samples Histopathological and genotoxic analyses revealed of lesions in 100% of the study specimens. Thus, the histological and genotoxic alterations found in 100% of S. herzbergii specimens captured in São José Bay-MA are potentially associated with PAH concentrations present in the water. These results are potentially associated with the presence of PAH and trace metals, both in water and in animal tissues, inferring a general scenario of environmental contamination which directly implies a risk to the health and survival of the local biota. This study shows the relevance of continuous biomonitoring of estuarine ecosystems, in order to guide authorities regarding sewage management and ensure the evolutionary development of estuarine species, especially fishes of importance in the local cuisine, therefore related to human food security.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the current study is to evaluate gene expression patterns of LH (lhr) and estrogen (er) receptors and plasma steroid levels during testicular development in Genyatremus luteus. Males were histologically classified as immature (n=7), maturing (n=7) and mature (n=7), based on the cellular structure of their testes. Plasma 11-KT concentration recorded peak at the final maturation stage. The highest plasma 17α-OHP concentrations were observed at the immature stage; they decreased at the maturation and mature stages. On the other hand, 17ß-estradiol (E2) recorded higher concentrations at the maturation stage. Er expression has significantly increased along the maturational development of animals' testes. The mRNA observed for the LH receptor has decreased from immature to maturing stage; it presented expression peak at the mature stage. There was high association between receptor gene expression and plasma steroid levels, mainly E2. The current study was the first to feature different reproductive maturation stages in male G. luteus specimens, based on cellular, endocrine and molecular aspects. In addition, it has shown that the gene expression profile for er and lhr receptors, as well as plasma 11-KT and E2 concentrations, are directly linked to testicular maturation, although they are not necessarily associated with the gonadosomatic index.

ABSTRACT

The rat lungworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic parasite and the main cause of eosinophilic meningitis in the world. Its main source of nutrients originates from the degradation of host hemoglobin in blood-feeding helminths, such as A. cantonensis. The purpose of this study was to analyze the ultrastructure of the intestinal cells by using of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A. cantonensis worms obtained from Rattus norvegicus (norway rats) from endemic area were used for TEM. The ultrastructural analysis was performed using fragments cut from the middle part of the worms, and the TEM study revealed the cells with microvilli and nuclei containing areas of loose and condensed chromatin and the presence of macrovesicles and microvesicles of digestion and it was observed in this study that intestinal epithelium is look like a syncytium. The ultrastructural aspects of the intestinal cells surface of A. Cantonensis the indicate that the intestinal epithelium is a multinucleate mosaic or syncytium.

ABSTRACT

O presente estudo avaliou o efeito da suplementação com OmniGen-AF® na proliferação de linfócitos e títulos de anticorpos após vacinação em bovinos leiteiros. Amostras de sangue periférico foram coletadas de 32 vacas leiteiras para quantificação dos títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira, e amostras de sangue periférico de 16 vacas leiteiras foram também coletadas para avaliação da proliferação de linfócitos. Observou-se que a suplementação com OmniGen-AF® aumentou a proliferação basal de linfócitos (sem estímulos) 21 dias após a vacinação (P=0,03), apesar de reduzir a proliferação de linfócitos B quando estimulada com Leptospira borgpetersenii serovar Hardjo inativada pelo calor (P=0,03). Ademais, nenhum efeito da suplementação sobre a proliferação de linfócitos no momento imediatamente anterior à vacinação e nos títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira foi encontrado. Além disso, a proliferação de linfócitos estimulada com lipopolissacarídeos foi maior em vacas multíparas que em primíparas 21 dias após a vacinação (P=0,03). Desse modo, o presente estudo demonstra que a suplementação com OmniGen-AF® não afetou de forma robusta a proliferação de linfócitos e os títulos de anticorpos anti-Leptospira após vacinação em vacas leiteiras sadias.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The nonunion fracture is a relatively frequent complication in both human and veterinary medicine. Specifically, atrophic fracture nonunions are difficult to treat, with revision surgery usually providing the best prognosis. Anabolic steroids, such as nandrolone decanoate (ND), have been reported to have beneficial clinical effects on bone mass gain during osteoporosis; however, their utility in promoting regeneration in atrophic nonunions has not been documented. Our objective was to examine morphological changes induced by the ND in experimental fracture nonunion with vascular deficit in the rat model. METHODS: Fourteen adult Wistar rats had an atrophic fracture nonunion induced in the diaphysis of their left femur. Rats were allocated into two groups: control group and nandrolone decanoate group. Rats in the latter group were given nandrolone decanoate (1.5 mg/kg IM, once a week, during 4 weeks after confirmation of fracture nonunion radiographically). Radiographic and anatomopathological examination, micro-tomography and histological analysis were assessed to characterize the morphological changes promoted by the nandrolone decanoate use. RESULTS: Based on radiology, anatomopathological evaluation, computed micro-tomography and conventional microscopy, nandrolone decanoate promoted bone regeneration at the fracture nonunion site by increasing the cellularity at the fracture site. Percentage of collagen was not significantly different between groups, consistent with high-quality regenerated bone. CONCLUSION: The anabolic steroid nandrolone decanoate improved bone mass and regeneration without affecting collagen production and therefore has potential for improving outcomes for atrophic fracture nonunion.

Abstract The present paper addresses the feeding activity of Trachinotus cayennensis, collected in Lençóis Bay (1°18'S - 1°19'S; 44°51'W - 44°53'W) on the western coast of the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Sampling was conducted between June 2012 and June 2013 using driftnets with stretch mesh sizes from 95 to 100 mm. A total of 205 individuals (114 females and 91 males) were analyzed. Statistically significant differences in the sex ratio were found in June, September and December 2012. Food items were analyzed based on frequency of occurrence and volumetric method, with the subsequent calculation of the alimentary importance index. Three size groups were defined to determine possible ontogenetic changes in eating habits based on the size range of the individuals collected: I (˂ 29 cm), II (29.1 to 37.0) and III (≥ 37.1). Eleven food item categories were identified: mollusks, polychaetes, crustaceans, nematodes, insects, algae, bryozoans, ophiuroids, fishes, vegetal matter and sediments. The variety of items in the diet of T. cayennensis indicates considerable feeding plasticity and opportunistic behavior. Seasonal variations influenced the feeding pattern of the species, with greater feeding activity in the dry season. The considerable availability of resources in estuarine habitats of the western coast of Maranhão constitutes another factor that influences the feeding behavior of this species.


Resumo Atividade alimentar do pampo Trachinotus cayennensis (Cuvier 1832) (Perciformes, Carangidae) em estuários na costa ocidental do Maranhão, Brasil. O presente trabalho descreve a atividade alimentar do Trachinotus cayennensis , coletado na Baía de Lençóis (1°18'S - 1°19'S; 44°51'W - 44°53'W) na costa oeste do Maranhão. Amostragens foram realizadas entre junho de 2012 e junho de 2013, utilizando redes de emalhar à deriva com tamanho de malha de 95 a 100 mm. Foram analisados ​​205 indivíduos (114 fêmeas e 91 machos). Encontraram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas na proporção sexual nos meses de junho, setembro e dezembro de 2012. Os itens alimentares foram analisados ​​com base na frequência de ocorrência e utilizando o método volumétrico, com o subsequente cálculo do índice de importância alimentar. Três grupos de tamanho foram definidos para determinar possíveis mudanças ontogenéticas nos hábitos alimentares com base na faixa de tamanho dos indivíduos coletados: I (˂ 29 cm), II (29,1 a 37,0) e III (≥ 37,1). Foram identificadas 11 categorias de alimentos: moluscos, poliquetas, crustáceos, nematoides, insetos, algas, briozoários, ophiuro, peixes, matéria vegetal e sedimentos. A variedade de itens na dieta de T. cayennensis indica uma plasticidade alimentar considerável e um comportamento oportunista. As variações sazonais influenciaram o padrão alimentar da espécie, com maior atividade de alimentação na estação seca. A considerável disponibilidade de recursos nos habitats estuarinos da costa oeste do Maranhão constitui outro fator que exerce influência sobre o comportamento alimentar desta espécie.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUÇÃO: Os dados de resultados a longo prazo após valvoplastia mitral percutânea (VMP) em pacientes portadores de estenose mitral ainda são escassos e os sistemas de pontuação atuais têm limitações. Propomos um novo escore capaz de predizer sucesso imediato e tardio em pacientes elegíveis para o tratamento de estenose mitral por VMP, baseando-se nas análises de características ecocardiográficas, fatores clínicos e hemodinâmicos relevantes. MÉTODOS: Análise retrospectiva de 1582 pacientes com estenose mitral grave que foram submetidos à VMP no período de agosto de 1987 a junho de 2011 em um único centro. O período de seguimento dos pacientes apresentou mediana de 8,3 anos, com um seguimento máximo de até 23 anos. O desfecho combinado foi composto de morte cardiovascular, nova VMP ou cirurgia para plastia/troca valvar mitral. Dois modelos estatísticos foram construídos para prever a sobrevivência imediata e de longo prazo livre de eventos. RESULTADOS: A média de idade dos pacientes foi de 36,8±12,9 anos e houve prevalência do sexo feminino (86,4%). A maioria dos pacientes no momento da VMP apresentavam classe funcional New York Heart Associaton (NYHA) III (57,7%) e escore de Wilkins entre 9-11 (49,1%). Na análise multivariada para predição de sucesso imediato tiveram significância estatística a idade, tamanho de átrio esquerdo, gradiente transvalvar mitral médio e pontuação pelo escore de Wilkins. Para predição de sucesso tardio tiveram significância estatística idade, classe funcional, tamanho de átrio esquerdo e pontuação pelo escore de Wilkins. CONCLUSÃO: Na ampla população estudada tornou-se evidente que não somente o escore de Wilkins parece ter relevância na predição de sucesso imediato e tardio para os pacientes com estenose mitral reumática submetidos a VMP. Além de parâmetros ecocardiográficos, os parâmetros clínicos e hemodinâmicos também parecem contribuir de forma importante no sucesso imediato do procedimento, bem como no tempo livre de intervenções e mortalidade a longo prazo. ABSTRACT

INTRODUÇÃO: A artéria radial tornou-se, recentemente, uma alternativa de acesso vascular muito popular nos procedimentos percutâneos coronarianos. Contudo, apesar do uso de cateteres com diâmetro maior ser fator de risco para oclusão da artéria radial, a mensuração do tamanho da mesma não é realizada rotineiramente. MÉTODOS: Com uso da ultrassonagrafia, realizou-se, prospectivamente, a mensuração do diâmetro das artérias radiais e ulnares de 317 pacientes submetidos à angiocoronariografia e/ou intervenção coronariana percutânea em serviços de referência em cardiologia no sul, sudeste e centro oeste do País. Além disso foi verificado as características demográficas e clínicas desta população. Os dados foram tabulados e analisados no programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Version 18.0, conforme frequência, média e desvio padrão. RESULTADOS: O diâmetro interno médio das artérias radial e ulnar direitas foi de 2,836±0,7mm e 2,155±0,58mm, respectivamente. Os resultados das artérias contralaterais foram similares (radial 2,53±0,63mm, ulnar 2,15±0,55mm). 20,5% dos pacientes apresentaram diâmetro da artéria radial direita inferiores à 2,3mm e 38,5% menor que 2,5mm, equivalente aos diâmetros dos introdutores Terumo® GSS 5Fr e 6Fr, respectivamente. A circunferência média do punho direito foi de 17,273±1,39cm, também semelhante ao punho esquerdo (17,33±1,39cm). A média de idade foi de 60±10,89 anos. O peso médio encontrou-se na faixa de 76,34±15 kg e a altura 164,1±8,9cm. Houve predomínio do sexo masculino (61%), a comorbidade mais prevalente foi a hipertensão (73%) e 70% dos pacientes apresentaram-se como síndrome coronariana aguda. CONCLUSÃO: Em aproximadamente 40% dos pacientes da amostra foi verificado um diâmetro inferior à 2,5mm da artéria radial direita, sendo este um valor menor ao do introdutor utilizado para sua abordagem nos casos de intervenção coronariana percutânea. ABSTRACT

INTRODUÇÃO: Recentemente, o conceito dos chamados balões farmacológicos tem sido testado no tratamento da reestenose intra stent, como uma alternativa de tratamento sem implante adicional de outra camada de metal no sítio previamente tratado. Ainda que os balões farmacológicos com paclitaxel tenham se mostrado eficazes para esta finalidade, esta tecnologia ainda apresenta alguns desafios: o paclitaxel é sabidamente menos efetivo e mais tóxico que outros fármacos anti-proliferativos, em especial quando comparado ao sirolimus e seus análogos/derivados. No presente estudo avaliamos um novo balão-farmacológico (Magic Touch), que utiliza sirolimus na dose de 1,27µg/mm2 , depositado em solução excipiente (nano partícula), na concentração de 1:1. MÉTODOS: Estudo prospectivo, multicêntrico, de braço único, incluindo pacientes com reestenose tanto de stents nãofarmacológicos como farmacológicos, tratados com balão Magic Touch. Não foram incluídas reestenoses do tipo oclusiva. Os pacientes foram submetidos a avaliação angiográfica e com ultrassom (USIC) aos seis meses. O desfecho primário foi a avaliação do grau de supressão neointinamal aos seis meses pela angiografia (perda luminal) e USIC (% de obstrução luminal). RESULTADO: Um total de 17 pacientes foram incluídos, sendo a maioria do sexo masculino (59%), com média de idade de 58 anos e com 60% de diabéticos. Metade da população tratada apresentava reestenose de stents farmacológicos e em 62% dos casos a reestenose era do tipo difusa/proliferativa. Sucesso angiográfico foi obtido em 100% dos casos. Aos 6 meses, a mediana da perda luminal tardia intra stent foi de 0,21mm [0,07; 0,51] ao passo que ao USIC, o% de obstrução luminal foi de 20% [18; 24]. Do ponto de vista clínico, ocorreu apenas um óbito, de causa não cardíaca. CONCLUSÃO: Neste estudo inicial em humanos, o balão farmacológico com sirolimus e nano partículas mostrou-se eficaz em reduzir a proliferação neointimal em pacientes com reestenose prévia de stents não-farmacológicos e/ou farmacológicos. ABSTRACT

Two experiments were conducted to assess a hormonal strategy developed to reduce animal handling for timed artificial insemination (TAI) with sex-sorted semen. Four-hundred ninety-one (491) suckled beef cows received a progesterone (P4) intravaginal device and 2 mg intramuscular (im) injection of estradiol benzoate (EB) on a randomly chosen day of the estrus cycle (Day 0) in Experiment 1. Cows were treated with 500 µg of sodic cloprostenol (PGF2α) and with 300 IU of eCG at P4 device removal (Day 8); these cows were also randomly assigned to receive 1 mg of estradiol cypionate (EC) administered at P4 device removal (treatment EC-0h) or 1 mg of EB 24 h after P4 device removal (treatment EB-24h). Both treatments were timed inseminated (TAI) with sex-sorted semen 60 h after P4 device removal. Cows treated with EC-0h presented higher pregnancy rate per AI (P/AI) [45.0% (113/251)] than the ones treated with EB-24h [35.4% (85/240); P = 0.03)]. A subset of cows (n = 26) were subjected to ultrasound examination every 12 h after P4 device removal for 96 h in the row in order to determine the time of ovulation. Similar interval between device removal and ovulation was recorded for EB-24h = 70.0 ±â€¯2.9 h vs. EC-0h = 66.0 ±â€¯2.8 h (P = 0.52). Five-hundred ninety-one (591) cows were subjected to the same synchronization protocols and treatments (EC-0h or EB-24h). In addition, they were randomly assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement aiming at determining the effects of treatment with estradiol (EC-0h vs. EB-24h) and of semen type (Sex-sorted vs. Non-sex-sorted semen). All animals were timed inseminated 60 h after P4 device removal. There was no interaction (P = 0.07) between the ovulation inducer and semen type. The EC protocol led to greater P/AI than EB (P = 0.03). Greater (P = 0.01) P/AI was achieved through treatments with non-sex-sorted semen rather than with sex-sorted semen [sex-sorted (EB-24h = 49.0%; EC-0h = 51.0%) vs. non-sex-sorted semen (EB-24h = 52.4%; EC-0h = 68.2%)]. Therefore, EC administered at P4 device removal resulted in greater P/AI. Furthermore, the EC-0h protocol allowed reducing suckled beef cow handing for timed artificial insemination with sex-sorted semen.

ABSTRACT

In the development of new metallic biomaterials, the Ti-15Mo alloy has great prominence because of its excellent corrosion resistance and good combination of mechanical properties. In this study, the element niobium was added to the Ti-15Mo alloy, forming the Ti-15Mo-Nb system for the purpose of improving their properties and promoting its application as a biomaterial. These alloys are very promising to use as biomedical implants, because they integrate a new class of titanium alloys without the presence of aluminum and vanadium, which may cause cytotoxic effects. The alloys were produced by arc-melting and characterized by density, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, microhardness, elastic modulus, corrosion, and cytotoxicity assays. The developed alloys have ß phase predominance (with bcc crystalline structure). The addition of niobium decreases the microhardness and elastic modulus, with values around 80 GPa, which is well below that of the metallic alloys used commercially for this type of application. Very low passive current densities were found for all alloys studied showing that the passive film on these alloys is highly protective. In vitro cytotoxicity tests revealed that the introduction of niobium did not cause cytotoxic effects in the studied alloys. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ABSTRACT

This study compared vaginal temperature, physiologic, and productive parameters in lactating dairy cows supplemented or not with Omnigen-AF (Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ) during the summer months in a tropical environment. Thirty-two lactating, primiparous (n = 16) and multiparous (n = 16) pregnant Holstein × Gir cows were ranked by parity, days in milk, body weight, and body condition score (BCS), and assigned to receive (SUPP; n = 16) or not (CON; n = 16) Omnigen-AF (Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ) at 56 g/cow daily (as-fed basis). During the experimental period (d -6 to 56), cows were maintained in a single drylot pen with ad libitum access to water and a total mixed ration, and milked twice daily. Cows received Omnigen-AF mixed with 200 g of corn (as-fed basis) after the daily morning milking through self-locking head gates, whereas CON cows concurrently received 56 g of kaolin mixed with 200 g of corn. For feed intake evaluation, cows from both treatments were randomly divided in 4 groups of 8 cows each, and allocated to 8 individual feeding stations for 3 d. Intake was evaluated 4 times per group from d 1 to 56. From d -6 to 0, d 15 to 28, and d 43 to 56, cow vaginal temperature was recorded hourly. Environmental temperature-humidity index (THI) was also recorded hourly from d 15 to 28 and d 43 to 56. Cows were evaluated for body weight and BCS on d -6 and 56, individual milk production was recorded daily from d -6 to 56, and milk samples were collected on d -6, 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 for analyses of somatic cell count and milk components. Blood samples were collected on d -6, -3, 0, 9, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 36, 45, 48, 51, 54, and 56. Results from samples or observations collected from d -6 to 0 were included as an independent covariate in each respective analysis. Environmental THI was 74.2 ± 0.5 and cows were exposed to THI >68 for 633 h within a total of 672 h of evaluation. Cows assigned to CON had greater vaginal temperature on d 28, 43, 45, and from d 48 to 55 (by 0.38 to 0.52%), as well as greater mean somatic cell count (by 97%) and serum haptoglobin concentrations (by 89%) compared with SUPP cows. Cows assigned to SUPP had greater mean dry matter intake (by 7%), BCS on d 56 (by 11%), and mean serum insulin concentrations (by 35%) compared with CON cows. Hence, SUPP ameliorated hyperthermia, improved nutritional status, and modulated systemic and mammary gland immune parameters in lactating dairy cows exposed to heat stress conditions.

ABSTRACT

HMGB-like proteins are architectural chromatin factors, and their function is heavily dependent on their ability to interact with DNA (especially non-canonical DNA structures). HMGB1 is involved in many DNA processes, and dysregulation of HMGB protein expression has profound effects on cellular transcription, resulting in severe developmental defects as well as cancer. During DNA replication, elements that form the origin are still not well defined in metazoans. Sites with A (adenine) or T (thymine) repeats cause intrinsic curvatures in the DNA and are described to be involved in the replication machinery by providing binding sites to replication proteins. As a result, the DNA molecule shows intrinsically bent DNA sites, caused by periodic repeats of 2 or more As/Ts (dA/dT) as well as intrinsically non-bent DNA sites (INBDs), due to a succession of curvatures that cancel each other. In the present study, we mapped 11 INBDSs present in the AMPD2 gene that are related to each replication origin (oriGNAI3, oriC, oriB, and oriA). Following characterization of INBDSs, we tested the ability of HMGB1 to bind to the bent (b1, b2, b4a, b4b, b5, b6, b7, and b8) and non-bent DNA fragments (nb7, nb11, nb1, nb2, nb4, and nb5) via electrophoretic mobility shift assays. All fragments showed efficient binding to HMGB1. However, the non-bent DNA fragments nb2, nb4, and nb5 showed slightly reduced binding efficiency.

Macrophyte stands are a major contributor for this complexity due to their differential architectures. Nevertheless, the influence of distinct aquatic habitat architectures (with different types of macrophytes or without them) on microcrustaceans' taxa composition, usually found in macrophyte colonized water bodies, is underexplored in limnological studies. The main objective of this study was to analyze this influence by comparing the Cladocera composition among four habitat architectures: (1) fluctuant macrophytes, (2) rooted emergent macrophytes, (3) submerged macrophytes and (4) the limnetic zone of oxbow lakes associated to a large subtropical reservoir. Wide compositional variation was observed. Fluctuant macrophytes exhibited the richest Cladocera assemblage, dominated by Chydoridae. Submerged and rooted emergent macrophytes had the most similar assemblages between them. The most distinctive fauna was found in the limnetic zone, dominated by Bosminidae. Probable differences in resource availability in each sampled habitat architecture are considered as the driving factor for the Cladocera composition variation. We concluded that for a complete inventory of a given local fauna, it is imperative to take into account the aquatic habitat architecture, including macrophyte stands, in the data sampling design.

Resumo A complexidade ambiental é considerada um fator chave para o aumento na diversidade de ambientes aquáticos. A presença de bancos de macrófitas é um dos principais contribuintes para tal complexidade devido às suas arquiteturas diferenciadas. Entretanto, a influência de diferentes arquiteturas de habitat (com diferentes macrófitas ou sem elas) sobre a composição taxonômica de microcrustáceos, comumente encontrados em ambientes colonizados por macrófitas, é pouco explorada em estudos limnológicos. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar esta influência através da comparação da composição das associações de Cladocera entre quatro arquiteturas de habitat: (1) macrófitas flutuantes, (2) macrófitas enraizadas emersas, (3) macrófitas submersas e (4) a zona limnética em lagoas laterais associadas a um grande reservatório subtropical. Ampla variação composicional foi observada. Macrófitas flutuantes apresentaram as mais ricas assembléias de Cladocera, dominadas por Chydoridae. Macrófitas submersas e emersas enraizadas apresentaram as associações mais similares. A fauna mais distinta foi a da zona limnética, dominada por Bosminidae. Prováveis diferenças na disponibilidade de recursos entre as arquiteturas de habitat amostradas foram consideradas o fator mais relevante levando à variação composicional dos microcrustáceos. Concluímos que para um inventário completo de uma determinada fauna local é imperativo que seja considerada a arquitetura dos habitats aquáticos, incluindo os bancos de macrófitas, no desenho amostral.

The opossum has been suggested as an animal model for biomedical studies due to its adaptability to captivity and number of births per year. Despite many studies on morphology and experimental neurology using this opossum model, the literature does not offer details of the nerves of the lumbosacral plexus in this species. Ten lumbosacral plexus were dissected to describe the peripheral innervations of the Brazilian Common Opossum (Didelphis aurita) and compare the results with Eutheria clade species. The tensor fasciae latae muscle was absent and there was only one sartorius muscle for each limb. The distribution of the nerves were similar to other mammals, except for the caudal gluteal nerve, sartorius muscle innervations and the position of the pudendal nerve which arose from the major ischiatic foramen together with the ischiatic nerve, the cranial gluteal nerve and the caudal gluteal nerve. No anatomical variation was found. The special position of the pudendal nerve suggested that the Brazilian Common Opossum is a better model than rats or rabbits in surgical procedures with that specific nerve. In addition, the study revealed that the pelvic limb nerves are not an invariable structure of reference for muscle homology and homonym as reported previously. New investigation using other species of opossums are necessary to best comprehend the lumbosacral plexus distribution in the Methatheria clade and to confirm that other opossum species is eligible as a good model for pudendal nerve studies.

ABSTRACT

Although bodypainting has been reported as a great resource for teaching surface anatomy of humans, its use in veterinary anatomy has not been scientifically reported. In the present study, bodypainting was performed on 4 horses for anatomy teaching purposes of the equine locomotor apparatus. We aimed to use the bodypainting method as an additional tool to classic teaching and to test the relevance of our purpose. Twenty one Brazilian veterinary students were given a 90-min session, which included a presentation of painted horses, with opportunities for the students to ask questions and to palpate anatomic locations on the horses. Based on a questionnaire, there was unanimous student satisfaction with this technique. Furthermore, student scores on practical tests to evaluate the attention retain given immediately before and 1 h after the session were 33.9 ± 19.8% and 69.0 ± 18.4%, respectively (p < 0.001). We concluded that bodypainting has great potential for support the classic lectures of the equine locomotor apparatus.

ABSTRACT

Two experiments were designed to evaluate the impact of puberty status and the administration of melengestrol acetate (MGA) before onset of the breeding period on ovulatory responses (Exp. 1) and conception rate after AI performed on estrus detection during 10 d and the pregnancy rate through 80 d of breeding period (Exp. 2) of pasture-grazed beef heifers. In Exp. 1, heifers (15 pubertal and 15 prepubertal) received 0.5 mg per heifer/d -1 of MGA over 14 d. No differences in the ovulatory responses were found 10 d after the MGA administration (pubertal = 46.7% vs. prepubertal P = 53.3%; P = 0.72). In Exp. 2, 368 heifers were randomly assigned to groups according to pubertal status and the MGA treatment. All heifers were inseminated on estrus detection for up 10 d after MGA administration and following exposure to bulls between 20 and 80 d. The MGA-treated heifers exhibited a greater AI service rate than control heifers (72.1 vs. 41.6%;P < 0.01); however, heifers receiving MGA had lower conception results following AI (51.6 vs. 71.4%; P = 0.01). In addition, MGA-treated heifers were more likely to have a corpus luteum in the middle of the breeding period (95.3 vs. 87.5%;P < 0.01), although the Cox proportional hazard of pregnancy rate was similar (P = 0.29) at the end of the breeding period. At onset of the breeding period, pubertal heifers presented a greater pregnancy rate following AI (pubertal P = 42.2% vs. prepubertal P = 24.9%; P = 0.01). Therefore, pubertal heifers seem to have greater overall reproductive efficiency than prepubertal heifers, particularly at the beginning of the breeding period. Interestingly, administration of MGA before the onset of the breeding period increased AI service rate but did not alter the rate of pregnancy throughout the breeding period of pasture-grazed beef heifers.

ABSTRACT

Nonunion fractures occur frequently in humans, with profound implications (medical and non-medical). Although there are numerous animal models to study pathogenesis and treatment of nonunion fractures, there is apparently the lack of a definitive model for atrophic nonunion fracture. Therefore, the objective was to develop a low-cost rat model of nonunion fracture with a vascular deficit that enabled standardized quantitative analysis of bone growth and regeneration. The model was developed with two surgeries, performed apart. The first involved osteotomy of the femur diaphysis, removal of periosteum and endosteum, isolation of the fracture site using a latex artefact (Penrose drain tube), and reduction of the fracture using an intramedullary pin, whereas the second surgery was to remove the latex artefact. Based on radiographic imaging, micro-CT and histological analyses done 125 days after the fracture was induced, there was clear evidence of atrophic nonunion fracture, without pin migration or specimen loss. Perceived advantages of this model included low cost, ease of reproducibility, lack of specimen loss, and, finally, the potential to assess bone growth and regeneration under poor vascular conditions.
