ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Although oral frailty is independently associated with an increased risk of mortality, evidence for the usefulness of screening tools for oral frailty is less than that for physical frailty screening tools. We aimed to investigate the relationship between oral frailty and mortality in older adults. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 11,374 adults aged ≥65 years, who provided valid responses to a baseline mail survey questionnaire from the Kyoto-Kameoka study. Oral frailty status was evaluated using the Oral Frailty Index-8 (range, 0 [best] to 10 [worst]). Participants were classified into four categories according to the Oral Frailty Index-8: robust (score, 0-2), oral pre-frailty (score, 3), oral frailty (score, 4-6), and oral severe frailty (score ≥ 7). Physical and psychological frailty were evaluated using the validated frailty-screening index and defined as a score of ≥3 out of a possible 5 points. Mortality data were collected from 30 July 2011 to 30 November 2016. Hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality were calculated using a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS: During the 5.3-year median follow-up period (57,157 person-years), 1184 deaths were recorded. After adjusting for confounders, including physical and psychological frailty, medical history, and lifestyle, in comparison with a robust oral status, oral pre-frailty (HR, 1.29; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.02-1.63), oral frailty (HR, 1.22; 95 % CI, 1.01-1.48), and oral severe frailty (HR, 1.43; 95 % CI, 1.16-1.76) were associated with higher HRs of mortality (p for trend = 0.002). CONCLUSION: Oral frailty is associated with mortality independent of physical and psychological frailty in older adults. The Oral Frailty Index-8 may be useful for identifying individuals at high risk of mortality.

ABSTRACT

The world's population is aging. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death among the older adults, with aspiration pneumonia being particularly common. Aspiration pneumonia is caused by a decline in swallowing function. Causes can include age-related sarcopenia of swallowing muscles, cognitive decline, cerebrovascular and other diseases or even changes in individual taste preference. Currently, the main treatment approach for dysphagia is resistance training of swallowing-related muscles. This approach has not been effective and establishment of novel methods are required. In this review, we introduce and discuss the relationship between taste, taste preference, carbonation and swallowing function. Taste and preference improve swallowing function. Recently, it has been shown that a carbonated beverage that combines the functionality of a thickening agent, the appeal of taste, and the stimulation of carbonation improves swallowing function. This may be very useful in the recovery of swallowing function. It is important to note that deliciousness is based not only on taste and preference, but also on visual information such as food form. Umami taste receptors are expressed not only in taste buds but also in skeletal muscle and small intestine. These receptors may be involved in homeostasis of the amino acid metabolic network, i.e., the process of amino acid ingestion, intestine absorption, and storage in skeletal muscle. Proper stimulation of umami receptors in organs other than taste buds may help maintain nutritional status and muscle mass. Umami receptors are therefore a potential therapeutic target for dysphagia.

AIMS: We aimed to assess the difficulty in taking solid oral dosage forms (SODFs) among older people with dysphagia and clarify the relationship between difficulty in swallowing SODFs and swallowing function. METHODS AND RESULTS: Outpatients from a dysphagia clinic aged ≥65 years were asked yes-or-no questions about the applicability of eight items regarding difficulty in taking SODFs. Additionally, a videofluorographic swallowing study (VFSS) was performed to assess their swallowing function. The Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient were used to analyze the relationship between difficulty in taking SODFs and swallowing function. RESULTS: Among the 93 participants, the average number of SODFs consumed was 5.8 ± 3.1. In the questionnaire, the average number of "yes" answers was 2.2 ± 2.2, and 65 patients (71.0%) answered "yes" to at least one question. Additionally, no significant relationship was observed between the perceived difficulty in swallowing SODFs and VFSS findings. CONCLUSION: Approximately 70% of participants reported subjective difficulty in taking SODFs, showing that patients uniformly reported perceived difficulty in taking SODFs regardless of actual swallowing function. The results of this study suggest that patients must be questioned thoroughly about their SODFs use, regardless of the objective severity of their dysphagia.

OBJECTIVES: Maintaining the texture of the food that nursing home residents eat is critical for maintaining quality of life and preventing malnutrition. The aim of the present study was to identify the conditions necessary for maintaining food texture for this population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 143 people for whom reevaluation 1-year post-baseline was possible from among 256 dependent older people who consumed solid food on admission to a nursing home (baseline). The age, sex, primary disease, activities of daily living, nutritional status, oral status, swallowing ability, primitive reflexes, and food texture of the participants were determined. The participants who ate pureed or jelly after 1 year were identified and evaluated to determine factors related to maintenance of a solid diet. RESULTS: A total of 21 participants (14.7%) changed to a pureed or jelly diet after 1 year. Multivariate analysis showed good activities of daily living (p < .05), good swallowing ability (p < .05), and maintained nutritional status (p < .05) to be correlated with solid food maintenance. CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining activities of daily living, feeding and swallowing ability, and nutritional status appear to be important factors for the maintenance of a solid diet.

ABSTRACT

We performed a retrospective cohort study using medical records of 374 pediatric patients who visited a university dental clinic specializing in dysphagia rehabilitation in Japan between 2019 and 2020 to clarify the usefulness of telemedicine among disabled children receiving feeding therapy. The primary outcome was the feeding developmental stage confirmed at the final evaluation. Propensity score matching was performed between individuals in two treatment groups (in-person and telemedicine) before the final analysis using patients' age, sex, primary disease, gross motor function, and feeding developmental stage as covariates. A total of 36 patients were enrolled in each of the in-person and telemedicine groups. The initial evaluation for the propensity score matched population using the χ2 test showed no significant difference between the two groups in any parameter. The feeding developmental stage evaluated at the final evaluation using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test significantly improved compared with the stage at the initial evaluation in both groups (in-parson group, p = 0.007; telemedicine group, p = 0.013). The difference in level achieved at the final evaluation revealed that the most common level was "unchanged," followed by "improvement by one level" in both groups, indicating that there was no significant difference in the efficacy of feeding therapy between the two groups (p = 0.314). Our results show that telemedicine can achieve the same therapeutic outcomes as in-person therapy to improve feeding function in children with disabilities when receiving feeding therapy.

AIM: To examine the relationship between the number of present and functional teeth at baseline and future incidence of loss of independence. METHODS: Participants were community-dwelling older individuals who participated in a comprehensive geriatric health examination conducted in Kusatsu town, Japan, between 2009 and 2015. The primary endpoint was the incidence of loss of independence among participants, defined as the first certification of long-term care insurance in Japan. The numbers of present and functional teeth at baseline were determined via an oral examination. Demographics, clinical variables (e.g., history of chronic diseases and psychosocial factors), blood nutritional markers, physical functions, and perceived masticatory function were assessed. RESULTS: This study included 1121 individuals, and 205 individuals suffered from loss of independence during the follow-up period. Kaplan-Meier estimates of loss of independence for participants with smaller numbers of present and functional teeth were significantly greater than for those with larger numbers of teeth. Cox proportional hazard analyses indicated that a smaller number of present teeth was not a significant risk factor after adjusting for demographic characteristics. However, the number of functional teeth was a significant risk factor after the adjustment (hazard ratio: 1.975 [1.168-3.340]). Additionally, higher hazard ratios were observed in other adjusted models, but they were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The number of functional teeth may be more closely related to the future incidence of loss of independence than the number of present teeth. This novel finding suggests that prosthodontic rehabilitation for tooth loss possibly prevents the future incidence of this life-event. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2022; 22: 1032-1039.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To determine whether occlusal maintenance and reconstruction by dental intervention is associated with the prognosis of older home-care patients. METHODS: The study participants were 289 older home-care patients (101 males, mean age 82.2 ± 7.7 years) who received visiting dental treatment from dental clinics in the region between 2012 and 2018. The participants were followed up for 1000 days after receiving the necessary dental treatment in a home-visit setting. The participants were divided into three groups: those with natural tooth occlusion, those whose molar occlusion was maintained or reconstructed by dentures, and those whose occlusion was not reconstructed. Factors associated with prognosis were determined using the Cox proportional hazard model, with occlusal status, comorbidities, the activity of daily living, and residence status as explanatory variables. RESULTS: In the overall population, occlusal status (hazard ratio [HR] of those with occlusal disintegration versus those with natural tooth occlusion: 2.1, confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.18-3.82) and age (HR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.44-3.61) were identified as significant factors. In the group of participants aged <85 years, only occlusal status (HR of those with occlusal disintegration versus those with natural tooth occlusion: 3.4, 95% CI: 1.34-8.68) was a significant factor. In the group of participants aged ≥85 years, occlusal status was not significantly associated with prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: The maintenance and acquisition of occlusal support achieved by dental treatment contribute to improved prognosis in older patients younger than 85 years requiring home nursing care. ABSTRACT

A 'model' material of recycled polypropylene (PP) was prepared through the injection molding process, and the effect of processing history on the polymer characteristics was investigated through the high-speed melt spinning of virgin and recycled PP. On-line measurement of the thinning behavior of the spin-line revealed the downstream shift of solidification point for the recycled PP at the take-up velocity of 1.0 km/min, indicating the suppression of flow-induced crystallization. The difference was not clear at higher take-up velocities of up to 5 km/min. For any identical take-up velocity, no clear difference in the stress-strain curves and birefringence of the fibers from virgin and recycled PP could be observed, whereas the detailed investigation on the variation of relative amount of c-axis and a*-axis oriented crystals in the fibers prepared at varied take-up velocities suggested the deterioration of flow-induced crystallization at 1.0 km/min. It was speculated that the processing history induced the lowering of the entanglement density, which affected the melt spinning and crystallization behavior. An undistinguishable difference between the virgin and recycled PP at increased take-up velocities suggested the existence of an optimum elongational strain rate for the detection of the different states of molecular entanglement.

ABSTRACT

The laser-assisted melt electrospinning (LES) method was utilized for the preparation of poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) fibers. During the process, a carbon dioxide laser was irradiated, and voltage was applied to the raw fiber of PLCL. In situ observation of fiber formation behavior revealed that only a single jet was formed from the swelling region under the conditions of low laser power and applied voltage and feeding rate, whereas multiple jets and shots were produced with increases in these parameters. The formation of multiple jets resulted in the preparation of thinner fibers, and under the optimum condition, an average fiber diameter of 0.77 µm and its coefficient of variation of 17% was achieved without the formation of shots. The estimation of tension and stress profiles in the spin-line was also carried out based on the result of in situ observation and the consideration that the forces originated from surface tension, electricity, air friction, and inertia. The higher peak values of tension and stress appearing near the apex of the swelling region corresponded to the formation of thinner fibers for the condition of single-jet ejection. Analyses of the molecular orientation and crystallization of as-spun fibers revealed the formation of a wide variation of higher order structure depending on the spinning conditions.

OBJECTIVES: We developed a prototype technique that expresses the need for intervention and the effectiveness of the treatment when "not being at risk of injury to the oral cavity or to general health" due to the presence of teeth or prostheses is taken as the desired outcome of dental treatment for older people near the end of life. The objective of this study was to use the prototype risk assessment matrix to identify the risk for each patient according to their course and show the effectiveness of treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We produced a prototype Dental Risk Map (Dental R-map) based on the risk map method of risk management. Risk is classified into three levels according to the level of tolerability: (A) Risk for which watchful waiting should be included among measures to be considered; (B) risk for which intervention should be considered; or (C) risk requiring urgent intervention. RESULTS: We report the application of this technique to two men in their 80s. Both were assessed as risk tolerability Level C, requiring immediate intervention. Dental treatment eliminated this risk in one and reduced it to Level B in the other. CONCLUSIONS: We developed the prototype Dental R-map to identify oral risks and indicate the need for intervention to address these risks and the effectiveness of treatment for older people near the end of life. We used the Dental R-map for two patients and successfully avoided oral risks that might cause physical injury in both cases until their deaths.

ABSTRACT

In this work, laser-heated electrospinning (LES) process using carbon dioxide laser was explored as an eco-friendly method for producing ultrafine fibers. To enhance the thinning of fibers and the formation of fiber structure, planar or equibiaxial stretching and subsequent annealing processes were applied to poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fiber webs prepared by LES. The structure and properties of the obtained webs were investigated. Ultrafine fiber webs with an average diameter of approximately 1 µm and a coefficient of variation of 20-25% were obtained when the stretch ratios in the MD (machine direction) × TD (transverse direction) were 3 × 1 and 3 × 3 for the planar and equibiaxial stretching, respectively. In the wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis of the web samples, preferential orientation of crystalline c-axis were confirmed along the MD for planar stretching and only along the web plane for equibiaxial stretching, which was in contrast to the stretching of film samples, where additional preferential orientation of benzene ring along the film plane proceeded. The results obtained suggest that PET fiber webs fabricated through LES and subsequent planar or biaxial stretching processes have potential for a wide variety of applications, such as packaging and battery separator materials.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Dental implant therapy is a common clinical treatment for missing teeth. However, the esthetic result is not as satisfactory as expected in some cases, especially in the anterior maxillary area. Poor esthetic results are caused by inadequate preparation of the hard and soft tissues in this area before treatment. The socket shield technique may be an alternative for a desirable esthetic outcome in dental implant treatments. STUDY SELECTION: In the present systematic review, PubMed-Medline, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect were searched for clinical studies published from January 2000 to December 2018. RESULTS: Twenty studies were included, comprising one randomized controlled trial, two cohort studies, 14 clinical human case reports, and three retrospective case series. In total, 288 patients treated with the socket shield technique with immediate implant placement and follow-up between 3-60 months after placement were included. A quality assessment showed that 12 of the 20 included studies were of good quality. Twenty-six of the 274 (9.5%) cases developed complications or adverse effects related to the socket shield technique. Most studies reported implant survival without the complications (90.5%); most of the cases that were followed up for more than 12 months after implant placement achieved a good esthetic appearance. The failure rate was low without the complications, although there were some failures due to failed implant osseointegration, socket shield mobility and infection, socket shield exposure, socket shield migration, and apical root resorption. CONCLUSIONS: The socket shield technique can be used in dental implant treatment, but it remains difficult to predict the long-term success of this technique until high-quality evidence becomes available.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether masticatory movements in older patients with eating difficulties were associated with oral motor function, physical function, and appropriate food textures. BACKGROUND: There are few reports on the association between masticatory movements and food textures in older patients with eating difficulties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved outpatients at a clinic that specialised in eating and swallowing rehabilitation. Masticatory movements were evaluated as normal or abnormal masticatory path patterns. Oral and physical functions were assessed in terms of oral and physical status, muscle strength and motor skills. The appropriate food texture was determined based on fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing and a video fluoroscopic swallowing study. The associations between food texture and masticatory organ, muscle strength and motor skills were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 126 outpatients (75 men and 51 women; mean age, 78.2 years; SD, 9.6 years) were included in the analysis. 68 participants (54.0%) showed abnormal masticatory movements. Masticatory movement was associated with masticatory performance (odds ratio [OR] = 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.98-0.99), oral diadochokinesis (OR = 0.55, CI = 0.35-0.86) and stepping test (OR = 0.92, CI = 0.86-0.97). Masticatory movement (OR = 2.94, CI = 1.23-7.01) and the number of natural teeth (OR = 0.94, CI = 0.89-0.99) were associated with normal food. CONCLUSION: Masticatory movements in older patients with eating difficulties may be associated with appropriate food textures whilst being influenced by individual differences in systemic motor control. Masticatory movements may be as important as teeth to enjoy eating.

ABSTRACT

Although better diet quality is inversely related to the risk of geriatric disorders, the association of adherence to dietary guidelines with oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is unclear. We aimed to investigate this association in older Japanese adults. This cross-sectional study included 7984 Japanese participants aged ≥ 65 years from the population-based Kyoto-Kameoka study. Dietary intake was estimated using a validated self-administered FFQ. The scores for adherence to the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top (range: 0 (worst) to 80 (best)) were calculated. These scores were stratified into quartiles (Qs). Poor OHRQoL was defined as a score ≤ 50 using a 12-item Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index. The OR and 95 % CI were calculated using multivariable logistic regression and the spline model. Higher adherence score was associated with a lower prevalence of poor OHRQoL (Q1-Q4:36·0 %, 32·1 %, 27·9 % and 25·1 %, respectively). An inverse association was found between the score for adherence to the food-based Japanese dietary guidelines and the OR of poor OHRQoL among all the participants (Q1: reference; Q2: OR, 0·87 (95 % CI: 0·75, 1·00); Q3: OR, 0·77 (95 % CI: 0·66, 0·90); Q4: OR, 0·72 (95 % CI: 0·62, 0·85); Pfor trend < 0·001). These relationships were similar to the results in the spline model. Higher adherence to the food-based Japanese dietary guidelines is inversely associated with the prevalence of poor OHRQoL in older adults. Our results may provide useful insights to improve and maintain oral health.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Oral frailty describes a trivial decline in the oral function and is considered to be related to frailty. Thus, effective management of oral frailty could prevent or ameliorate physical frailty and the need for care. However, there is a lack of consensus regarding specific interventions for oral frailty. In this cluster-randomized controlled trial, we investigated the effects of a newly developed oral frailty measures program mentored by dentists and dental hygienists for elderly people in a clinical setting. METHODS: Of 3,296 participants included in a field survey, 219 who regularly visited dental clinics and met at least 3 of the following 6 criteria for oral frailty were considered eligible: <20 natural teeth, decreased chewing ability, decreased articulatory oral-motor skills, decreased tongue pressure, and substantial subjective difficulties in eating and swallowing. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we studied 51 patients in the intervention group (14 men and 37 women; mean age, 78.6 years) and 32 patients in the control group (7 men and 25 women; mean age, 78.0 years). We implemented a 12-week oral frailty measures program only for the intervention group. The program included preparatory oral exercises, mouth-opening training, tongue pressure training, prosodic training, and masticatory training. Primary outcome measures were the chewing ability score, articulatory oral motor skill for /ta/, tongue pressure, subjective difficulty in eating tough foods, and subjective difficulty in swallowing. We compared baseline characteristics using the Mann-Whitney U and χ2 tests for continuous and categorical variables, respectively. A repeated-measures two-way ANOVA was used to determine the efficacy of independent intervention variables, following the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The groups (intervention/control) and time (baseline/week 12) were the independent variables. Oral frailty measures were the dependent variables. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics and assessment results were similar between groups. We observed significant improvements in the intervention group in terms of articulatory oral motor skill for /ta/ and tongue pressure (p < 0.001). No improvements were observed in the control group. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that our oral frailty measures program effectively alleviates oral frailty. Future studies are needed to clarify the impact on preventing physical frailty and improving the nutritional status.

PURPOSE: This study examined the association between masticatory movement and oral and physical function in healthy older women using clinical assessments considering central motor control. METHODS: A total of 107 independent older women (mean age, 74.37 ± 4.46 years; age range, 66-84 years) living in the community participated in this cross-sectional study. The subjects selected were those aged 65 years or older with at least 28 teeth and without oral dysfunction, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disease, cerebrovascular disease, or neuromuscular disease. The following items of oral and physical function were measured: masticatory path pattern, masticatory performance, oral diadochokinesis (ODK), tongue pressure, single-leg stance with eyes open (SLS), stepping test, and grip strength. Logistic regression analysis adjusting for age was performed to investigate the association between masticatory movement and other items. RESULTS: In total, 30.8% of subjects were classified into the abnormal group regarding masticatory path pattern, having a significantly lower value than that of the normal group in masticatory performance (unadjusted p = 0.021). After adjusting for age, the masticatory path pattern was significantly associated with masticatory performance ( p = 0.032); ODK /pa/ ( p < 0.001), /ta/ ( p = 0.022), and /ka/ ( p = 0.016); and stepping test ( p = 0.018). Tongue pressure, SLS, and grip strength were not significantly associated with masticatory path pattern. CONCLUSION: Masticatory movement in older women was associated with masticatory performance, tongue and lip motor skills, and physical agility, which might be influenced by central motor control.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop a simple screening test for mastication, "the Sakiika (squid jerky) transport test (STT), which evaluates the vertical jaw movement coordinated with the lateral tongue movement during stage I transport, and investigate the possibility of its clinical application. METHODS: The study included 73 people with dysphagia (mean age, 78.5 ± 7.8 years; median age, 79.0 years; interquartile range, 75.0-84.0). The STT evaluated the ability of a participant to transport a piece of squid jerky placed on the midline of the tongue to the molar region. The STT score was defined as the number of vertical jaw movements occurring as the tongue transported food to the molars. A cutoff value was set by comparing the STT scores with masticatory function evaluated via a videofluoroscopic swallowing study and with food texture evaluated using the Food Intake LEVEL Scale (FILS). RESULTS: The STT scores counted by the two examiners had a κ coefficient of 0.79, indicating good reliability. The STT score was significantly associated with both the presence of masticatory movement ( p = 0.019) and food texture classified by FILS ( p = 0.032) at cutoff value of "3" (3 vertical movements). The STT showed 62% sensitivity and 75% specificity for masticatory movements. CONCLUSION: The STT could be a useful screening test to assess the presence or absence of food transportation to the molars for mastication in older patients with dysphagia. In addition, the STT could be useful in identifying the need to modify food texture to meet functions.

ABSTRACT

Although several studies have reported that the addition of bamboo charcoal (BC) to polylactide (PLA) enhances the properties of PLA, to date, no study has been reported on the fabrication of ultrafine BC/poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) webs via electrospinning. Therefore, ultrafine fiber webs of PLLA and BC/PLLA were prepared using PLLA and BC/PLLA raw fibers via a novel laser electrospinning method. Ultrafine PLLA and BC/PLLA fibers with average diameters of approximately 1 µm and coefficients of variation of 13-23 and 20-46% were obtained. Via wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) analysis, highly oriented crystals were detected in the raw fibers; however, WAXD patterns of both PLLA and BC/PLLA webs implied an amorphous structure of PLLA. Polarizing microscopy images revealed that the webs comprised ultrafine fibers with uniform diameters and wide variations in birefringence. Temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicated that the degree of order of the crystals in the fibers was lower and the molecules in the fibers had higher mobilities than those in the raw fibers. Transmittance of BC/PLLA webs with an area density of 2.6 mg/cm2 suggested that the addition of BC improved UV-shielding efficiencies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In older people with psychoneurological diseases, COVID-19 infection may be associated with a risk of developing or exacerbating dysphagia. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between eating/swallowing function and COVID-19 infection. METHODS: Subjects were 44 inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection being treated for schizophrenia in a psychiatric ward. Eating function was assessed using the Food Intake Level Scale (FILS) before and after infection. We also evaluated age, comorbidities, COVID-19 hospital stay, obesity index, weight loss rate, and chlorpromazine equivalent. RESULTS: Subjects had a mean age of 68.86 years. Pre-infection, 20 subjects had a FILS score of 7-9 (presence of eating/swallowing disorder) and 24 subjects had a score of 10 (normal). Eating function after infection resolution showed decreasing FILS score compared to that before infection in 14 subjects (74.14 years). Six subjects (79.3 years) transitioned from oral feeding to parenteral feeding. A ≥ 10% weight loss during infection treatment was significantly associated with decreased eating function and a transition to parenteral feeding. Chlorpromazine equivalents, comorbidities, and number of days of hospitalization showed no associations with decreased eating function. CONCLUSIONS: Preventing malnutrition during treatment for COVID-19 infection is important for improving post-infection life prognosis and maintaining quality of life (QOL).

ABSTRACT

Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is regarded as a bio-based alternative or complementary polyester for the widely used fossil resource-based polyester, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). High-speed melt spinning of PEF of low and high molecular weight (L-PEF, H-PEF) was conducted, and the structure and properties of the resultant as-spun fibers were investigated. The occurrence of orientation-induced crystallization was confirmed for the H-PEF at the take-up velocity of 6.0 km/min, the highest speed for producing PET fibers in the industry. Molecular orientation and crystallinity of the as-spun fibers increased with the increase of take-up velocity, where the H-PEF fibers always showed a higher degree of structural development than the L-PEF fibers. The tensile modulus of the high-speed spun H-PEF fibers was relatively low at 5 GPa, whereas a sufficiently high tensile strength of approximately 500 MPa was measured. These values are adequately high for the application in the general semi-engineering fiber field.
