ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Diffusing alpha-emitters radiation therapy (DaRT) is a brachytherapy technique using α-particles to treat solid tumours. The high linear energy transfer (LET) and short range of α-particles make them good candidates for the targeted treatment of cancer. Treatment planning of DaRT requires a good understanding of the dose from α-particles and the other particles released in the 224Ra decay chain. METHODS: The Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit has been used to simulate a DaRT seed to better understand the dose contribution from all particles and simulate the DNA damage due to this treatment. RESULTS: Close to the seed α-particles deliver the majority of dose, however at radial distances greater than 4 mm, the contribution of ß-particles is greater. The RBE has been estimated as a function of number of double strand breaks (DSBs) and complex DSBs. A maximum seed spacing of 5.5 mm and 6.5 mm was found to deliver at least 20 Gy RBE weighted dose between the seeds for RBEDSB and RBEcDSB respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The DNA damage changes with radial distance from the seed and has been found to become less complex with distance, which is potentially easier for the cell to repair. Close to the seed α-particles contribute the majority of dose, however the contribution from other particles cannot be neglected and may influence the choice of seed spacing.

ABSTRACT

Diffusing alpha-emitters radiation Therapy (DaRT) is an interstitial brachytherapy technique using 224Ra seeds. For accurate treatment planning a good understanding of the early DNA damage due to α-particles is required. Geant4-DNA was used to calculate the initial DNA damage and radiobiological effectiveness due to α-particles with linear energy transfer (LET) values in the range 57.5-225.9 keV/µm from the 224Ra decay chain. The impact of DNA base pair density on DNA damage has been modelled, as this parameter varies between human cell lines. Results show that the quantity and complexity of DNA damage changes with LET as expected. Indirect damage, due to water radical reactions with the DNA, decreases and becomes less significant at higher LET values as shown in previous studies. As expected, the yield of complex double strand breaks (DSBs), which are harder for a cell to repair, increases approximately linearly with LET. The level of complexity of DSBs and radiobiological effectiveness have been found to increase with LET as expected. The quantity of DNA damage has been shown to increase for increased DNA density in the expected base pair density range of human cells. The change in damage yield as a function of base pair density is largest for higher LET α-particles, an increase of over 50% for individual strand breaks between 62.7 and 127.4 keV/µm. This change in yield shows that the DNA base pair density is an important parameter for modelling DNA damage particularly at higher LET where the DNA damage is greatest and most complex.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the effect of temperature fluctuations on the taste quality of tilapia fillets during frozen storage was investigated. Major temperature-responsive factors included free amino acids (FAAs) and flavor nucleotides in fish fillets, which were identified using multidimensional infrared spectroscopy (MM-IR). The main FAA in tilapia fillets is a sweet amino acid (glycine). Compared with the control group, the umami FAAs and sweetness FAAs were significantly increased, and the total FAAs content increased to 1.30 times after the ninth fluctuation, reaching the highest level (611.16 ± 73.60 mg/100 g). Considering the equivalent umami intensity values, adenosine monophosphate and inosine monophosphate were retained during the first and second temperature fluctuations. In addition, the content of Na+, K+, and Ca2+ decreased (P < 0.05). Therefore, MM-IR is an effective method to identify taste components. With regard to taste quality, temperature fluctuations in the twofold range have an umami-enhancing effect.

ABSTRACT

The effect of antifreeze protein (AFP) on the water-holding capacity (WHC) and texture properties of the Patinopecten yessoensis adductor muscles during freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) were evaluated based on three impregnation methods: general impregnation (GI), vacuum impregnation (VI), and ultrasound-assisted VI (US-VI). The WHC, texture properties, and tissue microstructure were all evaluated. Results showed that the WHC and texture properties of adductor muscle were significantly improved in the VI and US-VI groups during FTCs (p < 0.05). The WHC of the adductor muscle in the US-VI group was maximally enhanced in terms of yield (6.63%), centrifugal loss, cooking loss, and T22. The US-VI group of the adductor muscle had the optimal chewiness and springiness compared to others, and the shear force and hardness were most effectively enhanced by VI. The growth and recrystallization of ice crystals in the frozen adductor muscle were significantly inhibited by VI and US-VI. The average cross-sectional area and roundness of ice crystals in the US-VI group were decreased by 61.89% and increased by 22.22% compared with those of the control, respectively. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model further confirmed that the WHC and texture properties of the adductor muscle were correlated appreciably with the degree of modification of ice crystal morphology through the AFP.

Radio frequency (RF) tempering has been proposed as a new alternative method for tempering frozen products because of its advantages of rapid and volumetric heating. In this study, the texture of RF-tempered frozen tilapia fillets was determined under different RF conditions, the effects of related factors on the texture were analyzed, and the mechanisms by which RF tempering affected the texture of the tempered fillets were evaluated. The results show that the springiness (from 0.84 mm to 0.79 mm), cohesiveness (from 0.64 mm to 0.57 mm), and resilience (from 0.33 mm to 0.25 mm) decreased as the electrode gap was increased and the power remained at 600 W, while the shear force increased as the power was increased for the 12 cm electrode gap (from 15.18 N to 16.98 N), and the myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) values were markedly higher at 600 W than at 300 W or 900 W (p < 0.05). In addition, the tempering uniformity had a positive effect on hardness and chewiness. The statistical analysis showed that the texture after RF tempering under different RF conditions correlated relatively strongly with the free water content, cooking loss, and migration of bound water to immobilized water. The decrease in free water and bound water migration to immobilized water resulted in a significant increase in cohesiveness and resilience.

ABSTRACT

Professional cleaning and safe social distance monitoring are often considered as demanding, time-consuming, repetitive, and labor-intensive tasks with the risk of getting exposed to the virus. Safe social distance monitoring and cleaning are emerging problems solved through robotics solutions. This research aims to develop a safe social distance surveillance system on an intra-reconfigurable robot with a multi-robot cleaning system for large population environments, like office buildings, hospitals, or shopping malls. We propose an adaptive multi-robot cleaning strategy based on zig-zag-based coverage path planning that works in synergy with the human interaction heat map generated by safe social distance monitoring systems. We further validate the proposed adaptive velocity model's efficiency for the multi-robot cleaning systems regarding time consumption and energy saved. The proposed method using sigmoid-based non-linear function has shown superior performance with 14.1 percent faster and energy consumption of 11.8 percent less than conventional cleaning methods.
