ABSTRACT

Facing breast cancer, women in precarious situations are more likely to be diagnosed at an advanced stage, and when detected at the same stage, they are more to die as well as faster. In this paper, we analyze a corpus of 40 semi-structured interviews conducted in six cancer services in hospitals of the Paris area on the care pathways of women with breast cancer. The analysis focuses on the beginning of the pathways (until the first treatments) and concentrates on their spatial and temporal dimension in the light of precariousness. Depending on the women's situations with regard to precariousness, the spatial and temporal organization of the pathways differs. There are socially differentiated latency periods that delay diagnosis (prior to meeting a medical professional) or the beginning of treatment (in relation to rights, the responsiveness of the health care system, and the interactions between women and the system). Spatially, the geometry of the pathways is variable and reflects different expectations of health institutions and medical staff according to the social profiles of the women. However, a detailed analysis of the pathways allows us to nuance these differences in terms of precariousness. The women's capacity to be autonomous, their network of contacts, the accessibility and responsiveness of the health care system, as well as the sensitive and emotional dimension of this stressful event affect the pathways both in terms of time and space.

ABSTRACT

Considering that it's always a good idea to know where we've come from, in order to better envision where we're going, it's appropriate to look at the evolution of the relationship to care by following the thread of nurses' professional construction and the concomitant transformation of practices. Indeed, if we are to approach the discipline of nursing with serenity, we must first identify the key to its cultural heritage, which defines the way it comes into contact with illness at the patient's bedside.

ABSTRACT

The surgery of trans people is not apprehended by most of plastic surgeons as a simple surgery for the purpose of morphological transformation. At the same time, the French trans population does not benefit from adequate surgical coverage. Over the past few years, French regulations have simplified the process of reassignment surgeries. In addition, we have witnessed a fairly rapid increase in requests for transition surgery with accelerated and sometimes atypical courses. In recent years, a number of specialists have warned the medical community about the risks of slippage due to a lack of psychological monitoring of certain people beginning a transition process. Quite recently, hybrid transition paths have also appeared which, from a surgical point of view, are no longer limited to ensuring that a native assigned female patient can take on the most masculine appearance possible or the reverse. In this manuscript, we expose the biological, historical and societal place of transidentity and then address the reasons for the warnings of a certain category of the medical population while reassuring the surgical community on the benefits of reassignment surgeries in a controlled context. We end by proposing a few ways to improve the care course of trans people applicable in France.

ABSTRACT

The ambivalence of the professional identity of the State Certified Operating Room Nurse (SCNO) is due to the difficulty of building a non-surgical technicality. Therefore, the participation of ORNs in robotic developments seems to be a way of emancipation for the profession.

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the epistemological sources of C.G. Jung's psychology over the course of its historical evolution. It considers whether his model should be seen as a scientific-philosophical, artistic, or an ethical-mystical model, or a combination of these; whether epistemological knowledge can come from getting a 'vision of the whole' or 'grasping the particulars thoroughly' (Jung 1939, para. 1012); as well as exploring the philosophers of science with whom Jung's epistemological model best coheres. The paper calls on the work of Joseph Henderson and his concept of the cultural unconscious, as well as exploring the contribution of Brazilian and Latin American civilization to the evolution of analytical psychology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The professional identities, profiles and representations of Burundian health workers remain insufficiently explored. Our twofold objective is to identify the different socio-professional profiles of first-line caregivers and to explore their respective representations of health workers and work. METHODS: The first study describes the overall population of the 1047 staff members employed in 2014-2015 in 62 health centers. The second is a cross-sectional survey conducted in April 2014. Using IRAMUTEQ© software, we conducted textology analysis of the structure and contents of 911 respondents' representations via 3 free associations with regard to 6 questions on the "good worker" and the "what renders one capable of doing good work". RESULTS: At the normative level, among all categories of staff, a relational role is a foundation of professional identity, while technical or administrative functions remain marginal. At the positional level, responses differed according to initial qualification level but not as a function of their role with patients or their professional experience. Three socio-professional categories emerged. The most qualified category (one-quarter of the population) consists primarily of male caregivers, with a high turnover rate (4 years) associated with prospects for further training and career development. These persons present the most professionalized representations of the worker and work. The second quarter has an average level of qualification and turnover (10 years), and is mainly composed of female caregivers with limited professional perspectives. This group's representations are less technical and more patient-centered. Finally, the remaining half consists of relatively low-skilled staff members in charge of technical and logistical support, who are likely to spend their entire career in the same center (>20 years). Largely disregarded by the health care system and its funders, they have few opportunities for training or advancement and despite their long experience, maintain profane representations of workers and work. CONCLUSION: Our results shed light on the predicament of unskilled staff members whose expectations are rarely taken into consideration, even though they represent a significant proportion of the workforce, perform tasks essential to quality of care, and serve as bearers of the memory of their hospital center. These results also highlight the compartmentalization of practices and knowledge between categories of workers and underscore the failure of continuous training strategies targeting the unskilled.

ABSTRACT

Risk assessment is an essential component of the occupational health and safety event prevention activity. The purpose of this study is to choose the most appropriate risk assessment method for hospitals. The main methods were compared. There are many assessment methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, but none has been adapted to the specificities of hospital activity. We adapted the workplace assessment sheet from the INCDPM (National Research and Development Institute for Labor Protection Bucharest) method to the specific of the hospital units and used this method at the level of jobs, within the hospital's departments, calculating the global risk level per job position, workplace (department), and hospital. The clinical departments global risk level exceeds the average (3.00) for all jobs, but does not exceed, however, 3.50, representing an acceptable security level. For assess the psychosocial risks we used the ELVIE method. Looking ahead, the methods should be adapted to allow both numerical presentation of the results and graphic.

ABSTRACT

The definition of diagnostic categories, such as autism, is not always consensual. It can be the cause of political struggles between various actors, including professionals, public administrations or patient associations. However, little is known about the situation of patient or parent associations in these "diagnostic politics." We assert here that these associations are more sensitive to the politics of definition than is suggested by the current historiography. Through an analysis of discourses and strategies of the Quebec Autism Society from 1982 to 2017, we document the role that this association intended to play in the politics of autism and we show how the adoption by the state of diagnostic-based policies intensify definitional debates in civil society, including among parents.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper discusses the process of training engineers, from observations of a machining course in a Mechanical Engineering program. Data collection and interpretation were subsidized by the history of engineering in Brazil, as well as the sociology of professions. Thus, it was understood how the systematized knowledge of this group is used to indicate internal, hierarchical positions within the profession and in relation to external groups. Data points to a hierarchization based on the opposition between academic training and improvised practices from the factory floor, despite the close relationship of these professionals with such practices. This opposition carries strong, symbolic violence when faced with the gender variable in the process of training these engineers.

ABSTRACT

This article looks into the construction of the body by bodybuilding. It is a field study interviewing bodybuilders in North-eastern Brazil. Semi-structured Interviews were conducted with a sample of eight men and two women and underwent content analysis. The results allowed identifying various uses of bodybuilding regarding subjects' past experiences with their bodies, modes commitment to the practice, and sex. If the suffering evoked to explain their commitment is individual, adherence to new standards of construction of the body takes place through a collective of people who lead to normalization of consumption of pharmacological substances

ABSTRACT

In-home hospital care provides a good vantage point from which to understand the evolution of paediatric care. It is in fact in line with the main ambitions of paediatrics today, by ensuring that children can remain with their parents in their familiar environment. The model may seem ideal. There are however constraints, such as the risk of confinement for the children and their parents and the difficulty, for the caregivers, of entering a private space which has not been designed for healthcare ergonomics.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Intimacy, situated in time and space and dependent on material conditions, is a recent subject of study in social sciences. It constitutes a category of analysis which provides information on the power relationships running through it. The right to intimacy, seized upon by vulnerable populations, then enables certain practices to be claimed and politicized.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This article proposes a reflection about the notion of cure and its uses in oncology. A first point examines its implementation as the utmost medical and political ambition of the founding mission of French oncology. A second axis points to its various social accommodations, observing the different figures and misadventures of the concept confronted with the test of the incurability of numerous cancers. Finally, a third part of the article focuses on the effects of the chronic uncertainty inherent in oncology. Based on empirical research made from the late 1900s to our days, inspired by grounded theory, interactionism and under the influence of Anselm Strauss, this reflection can be seen as an abstract of the author's work on French oncology. Medical uncertainty and its individual and collective management are at the core of this work.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT This article identifies and discusses several cognitive movements that are fundamental to DADOS journal sociology collection. Employing ideas on the dynamic of functional differentiation in the sociology of Niklas Luhmann as a general means of reading the survey data reveals the central role played by political sociology in the collection, which is the most common field of specialization. The discipline leads a movement which both differentiates itself from the rest of the articles published while altering the sphere, due to the resonances it imprints on the other specialist fields within sociology. Such a reading also highlights the role played in the collection by the reflexive self-description practiced by social and political thought, which has served as the second most common field of specialization over the 50 years since the journal's first publication.

ABSTRACT

This article discusses the materialistic bases of the concept of individual and consciousness according to the thinkers Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno. Therefore, it brings the analysis of the object of psychology, the individual, through the journey of his material movement under his different expressions in history, and, with this, presents some considerations on consciousness from the perspective of the Critical Theory of Society. In this sense, it seeks to highlight the relationships between the object of sociology and psychology, recalling that society contains in its determinations, as potentiality, the movement of the particulars to the establishment of a fair whole, ensuring universality; a way from which the individual may differentiate and constitute himself in a pacified way. According to the analysis undertaken, through the investigation of the material evidence that engender the individual in history, one can understand consciousness as a social self-consciousness, that is, socially determined and expression of the formation for autonomy.

ABSTRACT

Treating suicide as a social fact means disregarding its individual and dramatic dimensions. Sociologists do not reason on the basis of specific cases but by studying the variations, in space and time, of suicide rates. Their contribution relates essentially to a renewed perspective on society: suicide is in fact a very accurate indicator of the intensity and quality of the bonds which unite or isolate individuals in a society.
