The objective of this study was to begin characterizing purchase, storage, handling, and preparation of poultry products and eggs by selected consumers in three Asian countries: India, Korea, and Thailand. Approximately 100 consumers in each location were recruited to participate in this study. The consumers were surveyed about eggs and poultry purchase behavior characteristics, such as temperatures and locations, storage behavior, such as storage locations in the refrigerator or freezer, preparation behavior, such as washing eggs and poultry before cooking, and handling behavior, such as using cutting boards during cooking. The results indicated differences in purchase and storage practices of raw eggs. Most Korean consumers purchased refrigerated eggs and stored the eggs in the refrigerator, while Indian and Thai consumers bought eggs that were stored at room temperature, but would refrigerate the eggs at home. Approximately half of the consumers in each country froze raw meat, poultry, or seafood. Food preparation practices showed potential for cross-contamination during cooking, such as using the same cutting board for different kinds of foods or not washing hands with soap and water. The results presented in this pilot study may lead to development of educational messages and raising consumer awareness of food safety practices in Asian countries.

OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between diet, exercise. and the serum lipid profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Hospital based cross-sectional study. The study participants were selected through purposive sampling. The study participants comprised 316 men and women above 20 years of age from a disease-free cohort and included healthy subjects visiting the lifestyle clinic of CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad, India for health check-up. RESULTS: Among the participants of the study, 28.5% of the males and 42.2% of the females had hypercholesterolaemia. Body weight was significantly associated with total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Of the subjects studied, males had a higher mean calorie and fat intake than the females. A positive association was observed between waist circumference and both total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Waist circumference was also positively correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and triglycerides. There was a significant difference in the total cholesterol levels of subjects who exercised and those who were not involved in any physical activity. There was a significant difference between the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol values of the subjects based on exercise levels. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were significantly higher in males than in females and this is corroborated by the finding of increased exercise levels in males. Duration of exercise had a significant impact on the total cholesterol levels. CONCLUSION: Our results confirm that diet and exercise routines significantly affect the serum lipid profile. Obesity and overweight constitute a risk factor for the development of hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia.

OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the breakfast habits of 10-15-year-old schoolchildren and to assess the quality of this meal as well as its relationship to the food consumption pattern for the full day. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SUBJECTS AND SETTING: Eight hundred and two schoolchildren, boys and girls, aged 10-15 years, belonging to different urban schools located in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. METHOD: The breakfast eating patterns of the children were studied and their impact on growth was assessed, using dietary recalls and anthropometric measurements. RESULTS: Only 42.8% of the children ate breakfast regularly. Over half of the children skipped breakfast, ranging from daily to once in two weeks. The energy and protein composition of breakfasts eaten by the children indicated that those who did not skip breakfast met one-quarter to one-third of their total daily energy and protein requirements. Mean nutrient intakes calculated from 24-hour recalls revealed that the children's diets were inadequate compared with the recommended values for energy and protein. The inadequate energy intake was reflected in a high incidence of malnutrition in both boys and girls; 40.3% of the boys and 32.1% of the girls studied were found to be underweight. Protein intake was also inadequate among boys and girls, although a higher percentage of children met their protein requirements. CONCLUSIONS: Over half of the schoolchildren studied skipped breakfast frequently, the main reason being getting up late. Children who consumed breakfast had higher daily intakes of energy and protein than children who skipped breakfast. These data confirm the importance of breakfast to overall dietary quality and adequacy in school-aged children.
