RESUMEN

Background: Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) is the first choice approach in neonates with sufficient respiratory effort that require respiratory support. The type of nasal interface used in NIV affects both efficacy and patient comfort. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different nasal interfaces used in NIV support on neonatal patient comfort. Methods: Our study evaluated patients who received NIV support for 24 hours. The patients were randomly divided into two groups according to the type of nasal interface used, which were RAM cannula and short binasal prong (SBP). The patients' demographic and clinical data were noted. Their sleep was monitored for 24 hours with an actigraphy device. Results: A total of 82 patients were evaluated. The sleep efficiency in the RAM cannula group was significantly higher (respectively, 65.7% [10.22-95.25] vs. 57.81% [2.49-77], p=0.004). Although not statistically significant, the neonates in the RAM cannula group exhibited longer total sleep time (respectively, 10.4 ± 4.28 hours vs. 9.02 ± 3.73 hours, p=0.161). Comparison of heart rates and respiratory rates indicate that the patients in the RAM cannula group were more comfortable. Conclusions: Our study found that infants who received NIV support through a RAM cannula experienced more efficient sleep. Holistic approaches in neonatal intensive care units are vital for better neurodevelopmental outcomes in newborns. Although non-invasive, the interface used in NIV should also be a part of this holistic approach.

RESUMEN

Possible protective and therapeutic effects of nobiletin on kidney in a cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity rat model were investigated. Forty male albino rats were divided into four groups: control, cisplatin (CIS), cisplatin+nobiletin (CIS+NOB), and nobiletin+cisplatin (NOB+CIS). At the end of the study, the rats were subjected to biochemical, histological and immunohistochemical analyzes. Compared to the control group, tGSH (p < 0.05) levels, and G6PD (p < 0.05) and GPx (p < 0.001) activities, were increased in the CIS group; while significant (p < 0.05) decreases occurred in the MDA and TOC levels. Histopathologically, the kidneys of the groups administered nobiletin (CIS+NOB, NOB+CIS) were significantly different from the CIS group, being closer to control group in terms of degeneration and hyaline cylinder formation in the tubules (p < 0.05). While dilatation in the tubules, protein-rich fluid and hyaline cylinder formation in the lumen were most common in the CIS group, a significant decrease (p < 0.05) of these parameters was seen in the nobiletin groups (CIS+NOB, NOB+CIS). This study suggests that nobiletin can be effective in preventing and ameliorating toxic effects of cisplatin on the kidney.

RESUMEN

Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is increasingly used and now found in products intended for human consumption. The protective effect of 1,8-cineole (CIN) against BPAF-induced reproductive toxicity was investigated. Four groups were created, with each group consisting of eight rats: control, BPAF (200 mg/kg), CIN (200 mg/kg), and BPAF + CIN groups. The results demonstrated that the BPAF group exhibited a decline in testosterone levels and a decrease in sperm parameters compared with the control. Additionally, higher levels of MDA were observed, along with lower levels of GSH and GPx activity. CAT activity also decreased slightly. Tnf-α, Nf-κB levels were significantly higher, and caspase-3 expression was elevated, while PCNA expression decreased. BPAF significantly increased tissue degeneration compared with the control. However, the BPAF + CIN group showed statistically significant improvements in sperm parameters, except for concentration. They also exhibited an increase in testosterone levels and an improvement in MDA and GSH levels compared with the BPAF group. However, GPx activity partially enhanced. Tnf-α and Nf-κB levels were significantly reduced, and caspase-3 levels declined while PCNA and Bcl-2 levels increased. The Johnsen Testicular Biopsy score showed a substantial increase. Overall, these results suggest that CIN co-treatment in rats enhanced reproductive health and exhibited antioxidant, antiapoptotic, and anti-inflammatory properties against BPAF-induced testicular damage.

RESUMEN

Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the only treatment method that is known to reduce mortality and neurological sequela rates in newborns with moderate and severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We aimed to evaluate the relationship between rectal temperatures measured upon arrival to our unit and short-term outcomes in newborns with HIE/TH. This was a retrospective study conducted between January 2022 and January 2023. The neonates were divided into three groups according to their rectal temperatures measured upon arrival at our unit as follows: Group 1) <33°C, Group 2) 33-34°C (group arriving at target temperature), and Group 3) >34°C. Short-term outcomes and mortality were compared between the groups. Group 1 consisted of 17 (19.8%) neonates, Group 2 consisted of 34 (39.5%) neonates, and Group 3 consisted of 35 (40.7%) neonates who had HIE and an indication for TH. Rectal temperature on arrival to the unit was not related to the rate of clinical convulsions, rates of abnormal attenuated electroencephalography and magnetic resonance imaging findings, rate of pulmonary hypertension, duration of mechanical ventilation and length of hospital stay. Although the mortality rate was 29% in Group 1, it was 3% and 6% in Groups 2 and 3, respectively (p = 0.016). No relationship was found between the rectal temperature upon arrival to the NICU and the short-term outcomes in HIE/TH neonates. However, the mortality rate in those who were overcooled was significantly higher compared with the other groups.

RESUMEN

Testicular torsion is an urological emergency and can lead to ischemia damage and testicular loss if not diagnosed in time. Proanthocyanidin is reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The current study aimed to examine the possible effects of proanthocyanidin (P) on the testis in torsion/detorsion (T/D)-induced testicular ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Forty rats were divided into four groups (n=10 for each): sham-operated (sham), I/R, I/R + P100 (100 mg/kg, 30 min before torsion), and I/R + P200 (200 mg/kg, 30 min before torsion). Testicular T/D was performed on the left testicle by 3 hours of torsion at 720° clockwise, followed by 3 hours of detorsion. In the I/R group, an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and a decrease in glutathione (GSH), vitamin C (Vit C), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) values were determined compared to the sham group (p<0.001). Moreover, an increase in the expression of cleaved caspase-3 and Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax), a decrease in the expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were detected in the I/R group (p<0.001). Histopathologically, it was determined that the Johnsen and Cosentino scores of the testicles were irregular in the I/R group (p<0.001). Proanthocyanidin treatment caused a decrease in MDA, cleaved caspase-3 and Bax levels and an increase in GSH, Vit C, GPx, G6PD, Bcl-2 and PCNA values. Additionally, Johnsen and Cosentino rearranged the scores. The present findings revealed the protective and curative effects of proanthocyanidin in organ damage due to testicular torsion/detorsion-induced ischemia/reperfusion with their antioxidative and antiapoptotic properties.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the survival of patients with bone carcinoma metastases and assess the clinical applicability of existing prognostic models. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 247 patients who presented to our hospital between 2011 and 2021 diagnosed with bone carcinoma metastasis. Demographic data, general health status, primary diagnoses, laboratory and radiological findings, pathological fracture status, treatment methods, and survival times of the patients were recorded, and the effects of these variables on survival time were evaluated. Previously developed Katagiri, Janssen, 2013-Spring, PathFX, and SORG prognostic models were applied, and the predictive performances of these models were evaluated by comparing the predicted survival time with the actual survival time of our patients. RESULTS: After the multivariate analysis, the following factors were shown to be significantly associated with the survival time of patients: blood hemoglobin and leukocyte levels, lactate dehydrogenase concentration, prognostic nutritional index, body mass index, performance status, medium and fast-growing groups of primary tumors, presence of extraspinal and visceral or brain metastases, and pathological fractures. According to receiver operating characteristics and Brier scores, SORG had the overall highest performance scores, while the Janssen nomogram had the lowest. CONCLUSION: Our report showed that all prognostic models were clinically applicable, but their performances varied. Among them, the SORG predictive model had the best performance scores overall and is the model the authors suggested for survival prediction among patients with carcinoma bone metastases. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV, Prognostic Study.

RESUMEN

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a muscular dystrophy that can affect individuals of all age groups. Its prevalence is reported to be 0.4-1 in 10,000 people. Because of the low occurrence of FSHD, anaesthetic management is primarily based on expert opinions, case reviews, or brief series. Here, we present the case of a 72-year-old woman with FSHD who underwent hip fracture (HF) surgery. To prevent respiratory compromise due to FSHD, we opted for lumbar-sacral plexus block. To the best of our knowledge, there is no information in the literature regarding the use of combined lumbar-sacral plexus block in patients with FSHD undergoing HF surgery.

RESUMEN

Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, is nowadays widely used in the treatment of gram-negative microorganisms. The antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities of eucalyptol, a type of saturated monoterpene, have been reported in many studies. The aim of this study was to examine the possible effects of eucalyptol on gentamicin-induced renal toxicity. A total of 32 rats were divided into 4 groups; Control (C), Eucalyptol (EUC), Gentamicin (GEN), and Gentamicin + Eucalyptol (GEN + EUC). In order to induce renal toxicity, 100 mg/kg gentamicin was administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) for 10 consecutive days in the GEN and GEN + EUC groups. EUC and GEN + EUC groups were given 100 mg/kg orally of eucalyptol for 10 consecutive days. Afterwards, rats were euthanized and samples were taken and subjected to histopathological, biochemical, immunohistochemical, and real-time PCR examinations. The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) levels were significantly decreased in the GEN + EUC group (0.76 and 0.69-fold, respectively) compared to the GEN group. The glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) activities were significantly increased in the GEN + EUC group (1.35 and 2.67-fold, respectively) compared to the GEN group. In GEN group, Nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), Interleukin 1-beta (IL-1ß), Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), Caspase-3, 8-Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2) expression levels were found to be quite irregular. GEN + EUC group decreased the expressions of NF-kB, IL-1ß, iNOS, TNF-α, Caspase-3, and 8-OHdG (0.55, 0.67, 0.54, 0.54, 0.63 and 0.67-fold, respectively), while it caused increased expression of Nrf2 (3.1 fold). In addition, eucalyptol treatment ameliorated the histopathological changes that occurred with gentamicin. The results of our study show that eucalyptol has anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiapoptotic, nephroprotective, and curative effects on gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a significant cause of mortality and short- and long-term morbidities. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has been shown to be the standard care for HIE of infants ≥36 weeks gestational age (GA), as it has been demonstrated to reduce the rates of mortality, and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aims to determine the incidence of HIE in our country, to assess the TH management in infants with HIE, and present short-term outcomes of these infants. METHODS: The Turkish Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy Online Registry database was established for this multicenter, prospective, observational, nationally-based cohort study to evaluate the data of infants born at ≥34 weeks GA who displayed evidence of neonatal encephalopathy (NE) between March, 2020 and April 2022. RESULTS: The incidence of HIE among infants born at ≥36 weeks GA (n = 965) was 2.13 per 1000 live births (517:242440), and accounting for 1.55% (965:62062) of all neonatal intensive care unit admissions. The rates of mild, moderate and severe HIE were 25.5% (n = 246), 58.9% (n = 568), and 15.6% (n = 151), respectively. Infants with severe HIE had higher rates of abnormal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and mortality (p<0.001). No significant difference in mortality and abnormal MRI results was found according to the time of TH initiation (<3 h, 3-6 h and >6 h) (p>0.05). TH was administered to 85 (34.5%) infants with mild HIE, and of those born of 34-35 weeks of GA, 67.4% (n = 31) received TH. A total of 58 (6%) deaths were reported with a higher mortality rate in infants born at 34-35 weeks of GA (OR 3.941, 95% Cl 1.446-10.7422, p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: The incidence of HIE remained similar over time with a reduction in mortality rate. The timing of TH initiation, whether <3 or 3-6 h, did not result in lower occurrences of brain lesions on MRI or mortality. An increasing number of infants with mild HIE and late preterm infants with HIE are receiving TH; however, the indications for TH require further clarification. Longer follow-up studies are necessary for this vulnerable population.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Data on the effectiveness of hydrolyzed infant formula containing both pre- and probiotics (synbiotic formula) on the growth of infants is still scarce. This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the effect of a partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formula on growth parameters and the possible occurrence of major gastrointestinal adverse events or morbidities in infants born via cesarean section (C-section) delivery. Methods: C-section-delivered term and late preterm infants who received either partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formula, standard formula, or maternal milk and followed at seven different hospitals from five different regions of Turkey, during a 1-year period with a minimum follow-up duration of 3 months were evaluated retrospectively. All the included infants were evaluated for their growth patterns and any kind of morbidity such as diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, infection, or history of hospitalization. Results: A total of 198 infants (73 in the human milk group, 61 in the standard formula group, and 64 in the partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formula group) reached the final analysis. The groups were similar regarding their demographic and perinatal characteristics. No difference was observed between the three groups regarding gastrointestinal major side effects. Growth velocities of the infants in the human milk and partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formula groups during the first month of life were similar whereas the weight gain of infants in the standard formula group was significantly less than these two groups (p < 0.001). Growth velocities were similar among the three groups between 1st and 3rd months of age. Discussion: A partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formula provided better weight gain in late-preterm and term infants who were delivered via C-section delivery compared to the standard formula during the first month of life. This weight gain was similar to the infants receiving exclusively human milk. This difference was not observed in length and head circumference gain. No difference was observed in any of the parameters during the 1st-3rd months of age. Specially formulated partially hydrolyzed synbiotic formulas may reverse at least some of the negative impacts of C-section delivery on the infant and help to provide better growth, especially during the early periods of life.

RESUMEN

Bisphenol AF (BPAF) is an endocrine disruptor, and human exposure to these chemicals is growing in industrialized nations. BPAF has been demonstrated in studies to have toxic effects on reproductive health. This study examined the effects of oral exposure to BPAF on the reproductive system and the protective effects of carvacrol in rats. From 32 Wistar albino rats, four separate groups were set up for this purpose. Carvacrol 75 mg/kg and BPAF 200 mg/kg were administered by oral gavage method. Rat sperm parameters and serum testosterone levels were measured after 28 days of administration. The study looked at the MDA in the testis tissues, as well as CAT, GPx, and GSH as antioxidants parameters, NF-κB and TNF-α as inflammatory markers, caspase-3 and Bcl-2 as apoptosis parameters, and PCNA as cell proliferation markers. In addition, testis tissues underwent histological evaluation. As a result, in rats exposed to only BPAF, sperm counts declined, testosterone levels reduced, oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis increased, and cell proliferation decreased. Furthermore, severe disruptions in tissue architecture and decreased spermatogenesis were reported. In contrast, sperm parameters improved, testosterone levels increased, oxidative stress and inflammation decreased, and apoptosis was prevented in the carvacrol-treated group compared to the BPAF-only group. It was also found that spermatogenesis was maintained, and structural abnormalities in testicular tissue were mostly avoided with an increase in PCNA expression. According to the findings, despite BPAF-induced testicular and reproductive toxicity, carvacrol had therapeutic potential due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cell proliferation-increasing, and anti-apoptotic activities.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ease and accuracy of using a 3-D printed (3-DP) drill guide to insert Kirschner wires through the ilium and into the sacral body in preparation for minimally invasive iliosacral screw placement in dog cadavers. ANIMALS: 10 dog cadavers weighing 20 to 30 kg (mean ± SD, 24.5 ± 5 kg). METHODS: Kirschner wires were placed using a limited approach to the lateral ilium. Fluoroscopy was used in freehand and 3-DP drill guide application groups to facilitate the placement of a 1.0-mm Kirschner wire that was over-drilled using a 2.5-mm cannulated drill bit. Kirschner wires were placed using a 3-DP drill guide on 1 hemipelvis and freehand wire placement was done on the contralateral hemipelvis. Postprocedural CTs were obtained, and 2-D and 3-D analyses were performed. The Student t-test and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used to compare groups. A Pearson correlation coefficient was performed to evaluate the in-group correlation. RESULTS: Likert scores that assessed the ease of the procedure were significantly greater (P = .04) and the incision length was significantly shorter (P = .016) in the 3-DP drill guide group compared with the freehand group. The time of the procedure, the number of attempts to obtain accurate Kirschner wire placement, and fluoroscopy images did not differ (P > .05) between application groups. Drill tracks were primarily confined to the sacral body, with minor projected screw thread cortical breeches occurred in 1 cadaver in the freehand group and 2 cadavers in the 3-DP drill guide group. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The 3-DP drill guide simplified appropriate iliosacral Kirschner wire placement through a smaller incision compared with freehand drilling and would appear to be an efficient, practical instrument to facilitate accurate fluoroscopic-assisted screw placement when stabilizing sacroiliac luxations in dogs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The study's objective is to evaluate if Molsidomine (MOL), an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic drug, is effective in treating hyperoxic lung injury (HLI). METHODS: The study consisted of four groups of neonatal rats characterized as the Control, Control+MOL, HLI, HLI + MOL groups. Near the end of the study, the lung tissue of the rats were evaluated with respect to apoptosis, histopathological damage, anti-oxidant and oxidant capacity as well as degree of inflammation. RESULTS: Compared to the HLI group, malondialdehyde and total oxidant status levels in lung tissue were notably reduced in the HLI + MOL group. Furthermore, mean superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione activities/levels in lung tissue were significantly higher in the HLI + MOL group as compared to the HLI group. Tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß elevations associated with hyperoxia were significantly reduced following MOL treatment. Median histopathological damage and mean alveolar macrophage numbers were found to be higher in the HLI and HLI + MOL groups when compared to the Control and Control+MOL groups. Both values were increased in the HLI group when compared to the HLI + MOL group. CONCLUSIONS: Our research is the first to demonstrate that bronchopulmonary dysplasia may be prevented through the protective characteristics of MOL, an anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic drug. IMPACT: Molsidomine prophylaxis significantly decreased the level of oxidative stress markers. Molsidomine administration restored the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Molsidomine prophylaxis significantly reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines. Molsidomine may provide a new and promising therapy for BPD in the future. Molsidomine prophylaxis decreased lung damage and macrophage infiltration in the tissue.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Long bone defects due to fractures resulting from high-energy trauma, infections and tumor resections are problems that orthopedic surgeons commonly face. We investigated the effects of a titanium mesh cage on bone healing with an induced membrane technique. METHODS: Three groups, each composed of eight rabbits, were formed. Extraarticular diaphyseal bone defects were created. Femora of the first group were fixed with an empty titanium mesh cage and two K-wires. After formation of the defect, polymethylmethacrylate was inserted and fixed with a K-wire in the second group. At the third week, the cement was removed, a sterilized cancellous graft-filled titanium mesh cage was placed into the defect, and the membrane that was previously formed over the cement was placed on the cage and repaired. In the third group, sterilized cancellous grafts were filled into the titanium mesh cage, and the titanium mesh cage was fitted into the bone defect area. RESULTS: At the end of the third month, all subjects were killed. Radiological data revealed that the healing of the bone in the second and third groups was significantly better than that in the first group. There was no difference between the second and third groups. A histological evaluation of the healing status, such as fibrous tissue, cartilage tissue and mature or immature bone formation, was performed. Histological healing in the second and third groups was also significantly better than that in the first group. CONCLUSION: We concluded that the combination of membrane-induced bone healing and graft-filled titanium mesh cages expedites osteogenesis in extraarticular bone defects.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combined (ibuprofen+paracetamol) medical therapy in cases of persistent haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus that are resistant to standard medical monotherapy (ibuprofen and/or paracetamol) in this retrospective multi-centre study. METHODS: The combined therapy included the administration of 15mg/kg/dose of paracetamol every 6 h for 3 days and ibuprofen at an initial dose of 10mg/kg/dose followed by 5 mg/kg/dose every 24 h. After 2 days following the administration of the last dose, the researchers evaluated the efficacy of combined treatment by conducting an echocardiographic examination. RESULTS: Of all 42 patients who received combined therapy, 37 (88.1%) patients exhibited closure of the haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus without requiring surgical ligation. Patients who did not respond to combined therapy had a higher mean birth weight and gestational age compared to those who responded (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The researchers believe the success of ibuprofen and paracetamol in haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus treatment may be due to their synergistic efficacy and inhibition of the prostaglandin synthesis pathway through different enzymes. The results of our retrospective trial suggest that combination therapy with paracetamol and ibuprofen can be attempted when monotherapy is unsuccessful in treating haemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus, especially in centres without a surgical department.

RESUMEN

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of locally applied batimastat after laminectomy in preventing postoperative epidural fibrosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-two Wistar albino male rats weighing 200?250 g were used. The rats were assigned to four different groups (I-Control group, II-sham group, III-Laminectomy+Batimastat group, and IV-Laminectomy+SpongostanTM group). The rats were euthanized 28 days after surgery before TNF-?, IL6, IL-1?, IL10, TGF-?1, and MMP9 gene expression levels of tissue in the surgical area were determined with qPCR. TNF-?, IL6, and IL10 protein levels were also measured in both tissue and plasma. In addition, the surgical area was evaluated by histopathological and immunohistochemical methods. RESULTS: TNF-?, IL6, and IL-1? gene expression levels were higher in the batimastat group than in the control group. Whereas IL10 gene expression levels increased about two-fold in the sham and SpongostanTM groups, in the batimastat group, it was similar to that in the control group. TGF-?1 gene expression was three-fold higher in the sham group but was similar to that in the control group in both batimastat and SpongostanTM groups. MMP9 gene expression levels significantly decreased only in the batimastat group. In addition, fibrosis score, fibroblast cell count, inflammatory cell count, and CD105 expression decreased in the batimastat group relative to the control. CONCLUSION: Molecular and pathological examination results suggested that batimastat is an effective agent in reducing the occurrence of epidural fibrosis after laminectomy.

RESUMEN

Background/aim: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the common causes of mortality and morbidity in newborns. Despite therapeutic hypothermia, an important treatment with proven efficacy, the morbidity and mortality rates remain high. The aim of this study was to neurodevelopmentally evaluate patients who underwent therapeutic hypothermia. Material and method: Included herein were patients who underwent hypothermia between 2018 and 2020. Their medical files were reviewed retrospectively, and their demographic and clinical information was recorded. Patients whose contact information was available were called to the developmental pediatrics outpatient clinic for a neurodevelopmental evaluation. The Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development 3rd Edition (Bayley-III) was used as the evaluation tool. Laboratory values and clinical parameters of the patients were further analyzed. Results: It was found that 42 patients underwent hypothermia in 3 years, of whom 14 (33.3%) had died. Of the 28 patients who were discharged, 20 children could be reached, and a neurodevelopmental evaluation was performed. Developmental delay in the cognitive area was detected in 11 (55%) patients, delay in the language area was found in 9 (45%) patients, and delay in the motor area was found in 11 (55%) patients. The correlation and regression analysis results determined that the time to start cooling was the most effective common factor in all 3 fields of scoring. Conclusion: The time to start cooling is related to the neurodevelopmental outcomes of patients with HIE. The earlier cooling is started, the better the neurodevelopmental results. Despite therapeutic hypothermia, the neurodevelopmental development of infants may be adversely affected. These patients should be followed-up neurodevelopmentally for a long time.

RESUMEN

This study was aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of eucalyptol on cisplatin induced kidney damage in Wistar albino rats. The animals were divided into four groups: sham (S), eucalyptol (E), cisplatin (C), and cisplatin + eucalyptol (CE) randomly, six animals in each group. Groups C and CE were received cisplatin (12 mg/kg, a single dose, intraperitoneally (i.p.)). Groups E and CE were treated with eucalyptol (100 mg/kg, for seven days, orally). The blood samples and kidney tissues were collected following sacrification and analyzed histopathologically and biochemically. Histopathological results revealed tubular degeneration and necrosis, inflammatory cell infiltration, tubular lumen dilatation, enlargement of bowman's space and hyaline cast were significantly irregular in the group C than group S. However, eucalyptol treatment (CE) modulated the alterations in the group C. Serum levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (CRE) were considerably higher in the group C compared to the other groups. There was no significant difference among the other groups statistically (except group C) in terms of BUN and CRE values. Eucalyptol treatment (at 100 mg/kg, for seven days) decreased the cisplatin induced increase in serum BUN and CRE levels and restored the reduced Vit C level and CAT activity of kidneys caused by cisplatin. Thus, eucalyptol's antioxidative, nephroprotective, and curative effects indicated the potential for future drug development.
