RESUMEN

We derive the Hamiltonian of a superconducting circuit that comprises a single-Josephson-junction flux qubit inductively coupled to an LC oscillator, and we compare the derived circuit Hamiltonian with the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian, which describes a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator. We show that there is a simple, intuitive correspondence between the circuit Hamiltonian and the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian. While there is an overall shift of the entire spectrum, the energy level structure of the circuit Hamiltonian up to the seventh excited states can still be fitted well by the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian even in the case where the coupling strength is larger than the frequencies of the qubit and the oscillator, i.e., when the qubit-oscillator circuit is in the deep-strong-coupling regime. We also show that although the circuit Hamiltonian can be transformed via a unitary transformation to a Hamiltonian containing a capacitive coupling term, the resulting circuit Hamiltonian cannot be approximated by the variant of the quantum Rabi Hamiltonian that is obtained using an analogous procedure for mapping the circuit variables onto Pauli and harmonic oscillator operators, even for relatively weak coupling. This difference between the flux and charge gauges follows from the properties of the qubit Hamiltonian eigenstates.

RESUMEN

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft arrived at the near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid 162173 Ryugu in 2018. We present Hayabusa2 observations of Ryugu's shape, mass, and geomorphology. Ryugu has an oblate "spinning top" shape, with a prominent circular equatorial ridge. Its bulk density, 1.19 ± 0.02 grams per cubic centimeter, indicates a high-porosity (>50%) interior. Large surface boulders suggest a rubble-pile structure. Surface slope analysis shows Ryugu's shape may have been produced from having once spun at twice the current rate. Coupled with the observed global material homogeneity, this suggests that Ryugu was reshaped by centrifugally induced deformation during a period of rapid rotation. From these remote-sensing investigations, we identified a suitable sample collection site on the equatorial ridge.

We report on experimentally measured light shifts of superconducting flux qubits deep-strongly coupled to LC oscillators, where the coupling constants are comparable to the qubit and oscillator resonance frequencies. By using two-tone spectroscopy, the energies of the six lowest levels of each circuit are determined. We find huge Lamb shifts that exceed 90% of the bare qubit frequencies and inversions of the qubits' ground and excited states when there are a finite number of photons in the oscillator. Our experimental results agree with theoretical predictions based on the quantum Rabi model.

Rendezvous of the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa with the near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa took place during the interval September through November 2005. The onboard camera imaged the solid surface of this tiny asteroid (535 meters by 294 meters by 209 meters) with a spatial resolution of 70 centimeters per pixel, revealing diverse surface morphologies. Unlike previously explored asteroids, the surface of Itokawa reveals both rough and smooth terrains. Craters generally show unclear morphologies. Numerous boulders on Itokawa's surface suggest a rubble-pile structure.

RESUMEN

The impact cratering process on a comet is controversial but holds the key for interpreting observations of the Deep Impact collision with comet 9P/Tempel 1. Mid-infrared data from the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) of the Subaru Telescope indicate that the large-scale dust plume ejected by the impact contained a large mass (approximately 10(6) kilograms) of dust and formed two wings approximately +/-45 degrees from the symmetric center, both consistent with gravity as the primary control on the impact and its immediate aftermath. The dust distribution in the inner part of the plume, however, is inconsistent with a pure gravity control and implies that evaporation and expansion of volatiles accelerated dust.

Low-temperature transport measurements have been carried out on single-wall carbon-nanotube quantum dots in a weakly coupled regime in magnetic fields. Four-electron shell filling was observed, and the magnetic field evolution of each Coulomb peak was investigated. Excitation spectroscopy measurements have revealed Zeeman splitting of single particle states for one electron in the shell, and demonstrated singlet and triplet states with direct observation of the exchange splitting at zero-magnetic field for two electrons in the shell, the simplest example of Hund's rule.

Experiments have been performed to measure the response of a spherical tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) and a silicon-based LET spectrometer (RRMD-III) to protons with energies ranging from 50-200 MeV. This represents a large portion of the energy distribution for trapped protons encountered by astronauts in low-Earth orbit. The beam energies were obtained using plastic polycarbonate degraders with a monoenergetic beam that was extracted from a proton synchrotron. The LET spectrometer provided excellent agreement with the expected LET distribution emerging from the energy degraders. The TEPC cannot measure the LET distribution directly. However, the frequency mean value of lineal energy, y(-)(f), provided a good approximation to LET. This is in contrast to previous results for high-energy heavy ions where y(-)(f) underestimated LET, whereas the dose-averaged lineal energy, y(-)(D), provided a good approximation to LET.

The time-course of the recovery of the hearing level after treatment in 90 patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss was examined. The improvement rate calculated relative to the hearing level of the opposite ear was investigated to estimate the hearing recovery. Follow-up audiograms were performed once per week for 1 month after treatment and once per month thereafter. There were two groups that differed with respect to the characteristics of hearing recovery. One group showed an improvement rate of over 50% at 1-2 weeks and a good improvement rate at 3 months after treatment. In the other group, the improvement rate did not reach 50% at 1-2 weeks, and the improvement rate was poor at 3 months after treatment. The patients with improvement rates of over 50% at 1-2 weeks had earlier initial visits and had mild hearing loss, whereas the patients with profound hearing loss had improvement rates under 50% and poor long-term prognosis. We conclude that the improvement rate at 1-2 weeks after treatment predicts the long-term prognosis for recovery of hearing level in patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

RESUMEN

Acute low-tone hearing loss (ALHL) is a typical type of hearing loss in Ménière's disease and thought to be caused by endolymphatic hydrops in the inner ear. We treated 40 patients with ALHL by administration of the steroid and the early outcome and prognosis of the hearing level was retrospectively evaluated. The prognosis was generally determined within 7-10 days after administration of steroid. High-dose steroid cured some patients who failed to recover with low-dose steroid therapy. Our results showed that steroid is one of the effective therapies for ALHL and supported that etiology of ALHL involves an immune response.

A high-dispersion spectrum of Comet C/1999S4 (LINEAR) was obtained in the optical region with the high-dispersion spectrograph on the Subaru telescope when the comet was 0.863 astronomical units from the Sun before its disintegration. We obtained high signal-to-noise ratio emission lines of the cometary NH2 bands from which an ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of 3.33 +/- 0.07 was derived on the basis of a fluorescence excitation model. Assuming that cometary NH2 mainly originates from ammonia through photodissociation, the derived OPR of NH2 molecules should reflect that of ammonia, which provides information on the environment of molecular formation or condensation and of the thermal history of cometary ices. Assuming that the OPR of ammonia in comets was unchanged in the nucleus, the derived spin temperature of ammonia (28 +/- 2 kelvin) suggests that a formation region of the cometary ammonia ice was between the orbit of Saturn and that of Uranus in the solar nebula.

Novel branched cyclomaltooligosaccharide carboxylic acid (cyclodextrin carboxylic acid) derivatives were synthesized by microbial oxidation using Pseudogluconobacter saccharoketogenes to oxidize five types of branched cyclodextrins, including maltosyl beta-cyclodextrin (maltosyl-beta-CyD). For each novel cyclodextrin carboxylic acid derivative synthesized, the hydroxymethyl group of the terminal glucose residue in the branched part of the molecule was regiospecifically oxidized to a carboxyl group to give the corresponding uronic acid. In addition, the physicochemical properties of cyclomaltoheptaosyl-(6-->1)-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-(4-->1)-alpha-D-glucopyranosiduronic acid (GUG-beta-CyD) (1) and its sodium salt were studied more extensively, as these compounds are most likely to have a practical application.

A 19-year-old male presented with sudden onset of right hemiparesis caused by left cerebral hemorrhage. Cerebral angiography demonstrated no vascular abnormality, and the hematoma was removed surgically. At operation, no abnormal vascular lesion was found in the brain adjoining the hematoma. Two years later, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging demonstrated a few foci of flow voids adjacent to the hematoma cavity. Four years after the hemorrhage, MR imaging showed more extensive flow-void abnormalities that indicated growth of an occult arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Cerebral angiography indicated a definite AVM supplied mainly by branches of the middle cerebral artery. Total resection of this lesion was performed. The histological diagnosis was typical AVM. Immunohistochemistry with vascular endothelial growth factor showed staining in the walls of the abnormal vessels. Serial MR imaging is very useful for the diagnosis and management of occult AVMs.

Long terminal repeats (5'-LTR) contain essential enhancer and promoter elements that act as targets for cellular and viral regulatory proteins. The interplay of these cis-acting sequences with specific transcription factors (NF kappa B, Ap1, and Sp1) present in infected cells determines the rate of transcription initiation from the 5'-LTR promoter element, and thus strongly influences the level of viral replication. Furthermore, Tat functions to enhance transcriptional elongation by binding to the trans-activation response element (TAR). These transcriptional factors enhance the transcriptional elongation from the HIV-1 promoter. HIV-1 genomic RNA packaging is a highly specific process involving interactions between the viral Gag precursor and cis acting packaging signals in the 5' leader sequence of HIV-1 genomic RNA. We examined the suppression effect of HIV-1 expression by the decoy RNAs targeted to these HIV-1 transcriptional and packaging regulatory regions. HIV-1 expression was inhibited by the 5'-LTR decoy RNA, and measured by the amount of HIV-1 gag p24 protein, but no inhibition of HIV-1 packaging could be detected.

RATIONALE: While several environmental situations may produce cocaine craving, there is little research on whether patterns of drug cue reactivity are similar across different environmental situations. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether two different environmental situations, psychological stress and drug cues, produce similar or varying patterns of cue reactivity in 20 cocaine dependent individuals. METHODS: All subjects participated in a single laboratory session and were exposed to stress, drug cues and neutral-relaxing imagery conditions. Cocaine and alcohol craving, emotion state ratings, subjective anxiety, heart rate and salivary cortisol measures were assessed. RESULTS: Significant increases in cocaine and alcohol craving were observed with stress and drug cues imagery but not with neutral-relaxing imagery. In addition, stress and drug cues situations produced similar increases in subjective anxiety, heart rate and salivary cortisol levels. Significant increases in negative emotion ratings and decreases in positive emotion ratings were found for stress and drug cues conditions as compared to the neutral condition. CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that a similar and comparable pattern of cue reactivity is induced by stress and drug cue manipulations. Furthermore, the comparable increases in subjective anxiety and negative affect observed with stress-induced and drug cue-induced craving provides support for the negative reinforcement model of drug craving and relapse. The negative affectivity co-occurring with the craving state appears to be an important target in the development of new treatments for cocaine dependence.

Determination of free fatty acids (FFAs) in control serum and human plasma was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. Peak height for palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and arachidonic acids at a detection potential of -415 mV vs a saturated calomel electrode showed a linear relation to acid amount in the range 50-1600 pmol. The present method for plasma free fatty acid determination required only 10 microL of plasma sample. The method is simple and the time for blood pretreatment is short. Change in plasma FFA with blood glucose level was monitored before and after meal ingestion by this method, using one male and one female subject. It was possible to rapidly reduce plasma FFA and increase blood glucose subsequent to the meal. The present method is thus shown to have potential for clinical application.

The expression of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1) mRNA after traumatic brain injury in rats was investigated using an in situ hybridization technique, along with regulating gene p53 and stress response gene hsp70 mRNA levels. At 3 h postinjury, p21(WAF1/CIP1) mRNA was markedly increased in the cortex, white matter, thalamus, CA2, a part of CA1,3 and dentate gyrus of the injured side. Hybridization signals remained elevated at 6 h in injured cortex and hippocampus and returned to the baseline by 24 h post-insult. On the other hand, p53 mRNA induction was not observed in any brain sections throughout the post-injury time course. Slight expression of hsp70 mRNA was detected in the injured cortex 3-6 h following injury and this was similar to the temporary pattern of p21(WAF1/CIP1) mRNA expression. This study showed p21(WAF1/CIP1) mRNA to be transiently induced after traumatic brain injury, independent of p53, this possibly being an early stress response to protect cells by arresting them in the cycle and allow DNA repair.

The clinical manifestations of human glioma are known to be diverse, ranging from aggressive growth and invasion to apparent dormancy; however, the molecular mechanism underlying this diversity has been largely unexplored. In the present study, we characterized four human glioma cell lines, T98G, A172, U251, and NAC6, each of which has distinct growth properties. A172 and U251 cells continue to grow after confluency, whereas the growth of T98G and NAC6 cells is contact inhibited. Northern and western blot analyses revealed that at high cell density, the expression of p27Kip1 cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor was dramatically enhanced at both the RNA and the protein levels in T98G and NAC6 cells but not in A172 or U251. These facts together with the finding that overexpression of p27Kip1 caused G1 arrest in A172 and T98G cells suggest that the induction of p27Kip1 represents an important determinant of growth at high cell density. Immunohistochemical analyses of 42 primary gliomas revealed an inverse correlation between the level of p27 protein and the Ki-67 proliferative index. Kaplan-Meier plots demonstrated that a low level of p27 in tumors is associated with decreased overall survival. Thus, disrupted regulation of p27 expression at high cell density may play an important role in determining the clinical behavior of human gliomas as well as the prognosis for glioma patients.

Two cases of embolic stroke associated with vascular anomalies were treated by intraarterial fibrinolytic therapy. A 78-year-old male had embolic stroke associated with fenestration of the middle cerebral artery (MCA). The embolus lodged in the terminal portion of the right internal carotid artery (ICA) and in the M2 portion of the right MCA. The fenestration was not detected before local fibrinolytic therapy, but was identified by postinterventional angiography. An 82-year-old female had a left-sided persistent primitive trigeminal artery (PPTA), and the embolus lodged in the terminal portion of the left ICA. Left internal carotid angiography also showed rich collateral circulation via the abundant leptomeningeal anastomosis. The PPTA involved the left ICA, so the anomalous anatomy had to be considered in performing local thrombolysis. However, the rich collateral circulation allowed recanalization of the occluded ICA without inducing bleeding. Dissolution of persistently adherent emboli must be performed with great care because of the possibility of such rare vascular anomalies.

The proportion of alpha-linolenic acid (18:3) among the total fatty acids in root tissue increases as the growth temperature decreases. Endoplasmic reticulum omega-3 fatty acid desaturase is responsible for the production of most of the 18:3 in root tissue. In this study, the effect of temperature on expression of the TaFAD3 gene, which encodes endoplasmic reticulum omega-3 desaturase in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Chihoku), was analysed at the mRNA and protein levels. In wheat root tips grown at 30 and 10 degrees C, the proportions of 18:3 among total fatty acids were 22% and 55%, respectively. The level of TaFAD3 protein in microsomal preparations of the root tips grown at 10 degrees C was approximately 7.5 times higher than that of the root tips grown at 30 degrees C. The increased level of TaFAD3 protein at the lower temperature was accompanied by enhanced association of TaFAD3 mRNA with polyribosomes. In contrast, the level of TaFAD3 mRNA in root tips grown at 10 degrees C was slightly higher than in those grown at 30 degrees C. These results suggest that, in root tips, the increase in the 18:3 level at low temperature is achieved directly by an increase in the amount of TaFAD3 protein, and that temperature-dependent translational regulation of the TaFAD3 gene, rather than its transcriptional regulation, contributes to modulation of the TaFAD3 protein accumulation.

RESUMEN

A major quantitative trait locus (QTL) controlling response to photoperiod, Hd1, was identified by means of a map-based cloning strategy. High-resolution mapping using 1505 segregants enabled us to define a genomic region of approximately 12 kb as a candidate for Hd1. Further analysis revealed that the Hd1 QTL corresponds to a gene that is a homolog of CONSTANS in Arabidopsis. Sequencing analysis revealed a 43-bp deletion in the first exon of the photoperiod sensitivity 1 (se1) mutant HS66 and a 433-bp insertion in the intron in mutant HS110. Se1 is allelic to the Hd1 QTL, as determined by analysis of two se1 mutants, HS66 and HS110. Genetic complementation analysis proved the function of the candidate gene. The amount of Hd1 mRNA was not greatly affected by a change in length of the photoperiod. We suggest that Hd1 functions in the promotion of heading under short-day conditions and in inhibition under long-day conditions.
