RESUMEN

Multi-Modality Aphasia Treatment (M-MAT) is an effective group intervention for post-stroke aphasia. M-MAT employs interactive card games and the modalities of gesture, drawing, reading, and writing to improve spoken language. However, there are challenges to implementation of group interventions such as M-MAT, particularly for those who cannot travel or live in rural areas. To maximise access to this effective treatment, we aimed to adapt M-MAT to telehealth format (M-MAT Tele). The Human-Centred Design Framework was utilized to guide the adaptation approach. We identified the intended context of use (outpatient/community rehabilitation) and the stakeholders (clinicians, people with aphasia, health service funders). People with aphasia and practising speech pathologists were invited to co-design M-MAT Tele in a series of iterative workshops, to ensure the end product was user-friendly and clinically feasible. The use of co-design allowed us to understand the hardware, software and other constraints and preferences of end users. In particular, clinicians (n = 3) required software compatible with a range of telehealth platforms and people with aphasia (n = 3) valued solutions with minimal technical demands and costs for participants. Co-design within the Human-Centred Design Framework led to a telehealth solution compatible with all major telehealth platforms, with minimal hardware or software requirements. Pilot testing is underway to confirm acceptability of M-MAT Tele to clinicians and people with aphasia, aiming to provide an effective, accessible tool for aphasia therapy in telehealth settings.

OBJECTIVES: Determine if timing of transplantation affects patient mortality. BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant therapy and liver transplantation has emerged as an excellent treatment option for select patients with perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA). However, the optimal timing of transplantation is not known. METHODS: We reviewed all patients registered for a standardized pCCA protocol between 1996 - 2020 at our center. After adjusting for confounders, we examined the association of waiting time with patient mortality in an intention-to-treat cohort (n=392) and those who received a liver transplant (n=256). RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) time from registration to transplant or drop out was 5.74 (3.25-7.06) months. Compared to a short wait time (0-3 months), longer waiting times did not affect all-cause mortality: (3-6 months) hazard ratio (HR) 0.98; 95% CI 0.52-1.84; (6-9 months) HR 0.80; 95% CI 0.39-1.65; (9-12 months) HR 0.56; 95% CI 0.26-1.22. Subgroups with a shorter waiting time had similar survival to those with long waiting times: living donor available HR 0.97; 95% CI 0.67-1.42; AB or B blood group HR 0.93; 95% CI 0.62-1.39. Longer waiting times were associated with decreased all-cause mortality after transplantation (HR 0.92; 95% CI 0.87-0.97). This benefit began after a 6 month waiting time minimum (HR 0.53; 95% CI 0.26-1.10) and increased further after 9 months (HR; 0.43 95% CI 0.20-0.93). Waiting time was not associated with residual adenocarcinoma in the explant (odds ratio 0.99; 95% CI 0.98-1.00). CONCLUSIONS: A waiting time of at least 6 months will optimize results with transplantation without affecting overall (intention-to-treat) patient survival.

Background and study aims Low-quality colonoscopy increases cancer risk but measuring quality remains challenging. We developed an automated, interactive assessment of colonoscopy quality (AI-CQ) using machine learning (ML). Methods Based on quality guidelines, metrics selected for AI development included insertion time (IT), withdrawal time (WT), polyp detection rate (PDR), and polyps per colonoscopy (PPC). Two novel metrics were also developed: HQ-WT (time during withdrawal with clear image) and WT-PT (withdrawal time subtracting polypectomy time). The model was pre-trained using a self-supervised vision transformer on unlabeled colonoscopy images and then finetuned for multi-label classification on another mutually exclusive colonoscopy image dataset. A timeline of video predictions and metric calculations were presented to clinicians in addition to the raw video using a web-based application. The model was externally validated using 50 colonoscopies at a second hospital. Results The AI-CQ accuracy to identify cecal intubation was 88%. IT ( P = 0.99) and WT ( P = 0.99) were highly correlated between manual and AI-CQ measurements with a median difference of 1.5 seconds and 4.5 seconds, respectively. AI-CQ PDR did not significantly differ from manual PDR (47.6% versus 45.5%, P = 0.66). Retroflexion was correctly identified in 95.2% and number of right colon evaluations in 100% of colonoscopies. HQ-WT was 45.9% of, and significantly correlated with ( P = 0.85) WT time. Conclusions An interactive AI assessment of colonoscopy skill can automatically assess quality. We propose that this tool can be utilized to rapidly identify and train providers in need of remediation.

Acute graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) grading systems that use only clinical symptoms at treatment initiation such as Minnesota risk identify standard and high risk categories but lack a low risk category suitable to minimize immunosuppressive strategies. We developed a new grading system that includes a low risk stratum based on clinical symptoms alone and determined whether the incorporation of biomarkers would improve the model's prognostic accuracy. We randomly divided 1863 patients in the Mount Sinai Acute GVHD International Consortium (MAGIC) who were treated for GVHD into training and validation cohorts. Patients in the training cohort were divided into 14 groups based on similarity of clinical symptoms and similar NRM; we used a classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm to create three Manhattan risk groups that produced a significantly higher area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for 6-month NRM than the Minnesota risk classification (0.69 vs. 0.64, P=0.009) in the validation cohort. We integrated serum GVHD biomarker scores with Manhattan risk using patients with available serum samples and again used a CART algorithm to establish three MAGIC composite scores that significantly improved prediction of NRM compared to Manhattan risk (AUC, 0.76 vs. 0.70, P=0.010). Each increase in MAGIC composite score also corresponded to a significant decrease in day 28 treatment response (80% vs. 63% vs. 30%, P<0.001). We conclude that the MAGIC composite score more accurately predicts response to therapy and long term outcomes than systems based on clinical symptoms alone and may help guide clinical decisions and trial design.

It is widely accepted that milk provides the greatest relief from capsaicin burn, an effect typically attributed to its fat content and temperature. Previously, Lawless et al. reported partitioning lipophilic capsaicin in fat reduces burn, whereas Green showed lower temperature reduces burn. Recent research shows that dairy and nondairy proteins also reduce capsaicin burn, suggesting that multiple factors reduce oral burn from chilies. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of palate cleansers with varied viscosities, temperatures, and sugar, fat, and protein content. Specifically, we tested ice cream, Italian ice, yogurt, lassi, cold water (4°C), and warm water (37°C). Participants rinsed with a 5 ppm capsaicin solution, followed by a palate cleanser, before rating burn intensity continuously for 2 min on a general Labeled Magnitude Scale. Inspection of the time-intensity (TI) curves revealed all palate cleansers performed better than warm water. Italian ice performed on par with cold water, which did better than yogurt. Pairwise comparisons showed that ice cream and lassi had significantly lower burn ratings at some time points relative to warm or cold water. We extracted scaffolding parameters for each TI curve, finding that ice cream and lassi had the lowest areas-under-the-curve and the greatest percent decrease from their maxima, with ice cream performing slightly better in both parameters. These data support the view that it is not just one characteristic of a product, but rather a combination of product factors that reduce oral burn, including fat content, protein content, and temperature. More research is required to determine the relative weight of these factors in combination, given the multiple mechanisms underlying burn reduction.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive cancer with a dismal 5-year survival of < 7%, despite the addition of immunotherapy to first-line chemotherapy. Specific tumor biomarkers, such as delta-like ligand 3 (DLL3) and schlafen11 (SLFN11), may enable the selection of more efficacious, novel immunomodulating targeted treatments like bispecific T-cell engaging monoclonal antibodies (tarlatamab) and chemotherapy with PARP inhibitors. However, obtaining a tissue biopsy sample can be challenging in SCLC. Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) have the potential to provide molecular insights into a patient's cancer through a "simple" blood test. CTCs have been studied for their prognostic ability in SCLC; however, their value in guiding treatment decisions is yet to be elucidated. This review explores novel and promising targeted therapies in SCLC, summarizes current knowledge of CTCs in SCLC, and discusses how CTCs can be utilized for precision medicine.

BACKGROUND: Checkpoint kinase 2 is a tumor suppressor gene in the deoxyribonucleic acid damage checkpoint system that may be mutated in several cancers. Patients with germline checkpoint kinase 2 mutations and multiple colon polyps were noted during routine care, and genetic testing is recommended for patients with as few as 10 lifetime polyps. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether checkpoint kinase 2 is associated with attenuated or oligopolyposis and characterized the gastrointestinal clinicopathologic profile. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. SETTINGS: Records from patients harboring germline checkpoint kinase 2 mutations from 1999-2020 were reviewed. PATIENTS: A total of 45 patients with germline checkpoint kinase 2 mutations with endoscopic examinations. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Description of clinicopathologic variables. RESULTS: Twenty-five of 45 patients had polyps: 3 with only upper gastrointestinal polyps, 17 with only lower gastrointestinal polyps and 5 with both upper and lower gastrointestinal polyps. The most common germline checkpoint kinase 2 mutations in patients with polyps were p.S428F (n = 10), p.I157T (n = 4) and p.T476M (n = 2), with other mutations present in 1 patient each. Among patients with lower gastrointestinal polyps, 9 had adenomas, 6 had serrated polyps, 1 had an inflammatory polyp and 6 had both adenomatous and serrated polyps. Three patients (p.I157T, n = 2; p.R117G, n = 1) had >10 adenomas, and 1 (p.G259fs) had 18 serrated polyps. Five patients (11.1%) developed colorectal adenocarcinoma, including 2 with >10 adenomas. Five patients with p.S428F (50%) exclusively had right- sided adenomas. LIMITATIONS: Single-center descriptive study. CONCLUSIONS: Germline checkpoint kinase 2 mutations should be considered in patients with polyposis. The preponderance of right- sided adenomas in patients with p.S428F mutations suggests the importance of right-sided colonoscopy in these patients. See Video Abstract.

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify specific anaerobic bacteria causing bacteraemia and a subsequent diagnosis of colorectal cancer. METHODS: A nationwide population-based cohort study, which included all episodes of defined specific anaerobic bacteraemia from 2010 (5,534,738 inhabitants) through 2020 (5,822,763 inhabitants) and all cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed from 2010 through 2021 in Denmark. We calculated the incidence and risk of colorectal cancer after bacteraemia with specific anaerobic bacteria using Escherichia coli bacteraemia as reference. RESULTS: Nationwide data on colorectal cancer and specific anaerobic bacteraemia (100% complete, representing 11,124 episodes). The frequencies of colorectal cancer within one year following anaerobic bacteraemia were higher for species, which almost exclusively reside in the colon, such as Phocaeicola vulgatus/dorei (5.5%), Clostridium septicum (24.2%), and Ruminococcus gnavus (4.6%) compared to 0.6% in 50,650 E. coli bacteraemia episodes. Bacteroides spp. had a subhazard ratio for colorectal cancer of 3.9 (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.0 to 5.1) and for Clostridium spp. it was 8.9 (95% CI, 6.7 to 11.8, with C. septicum 50.0 [95% CI, 36.0 to 69.5]) compared to E. coli (reference). CONCLUSION: This nationwide study identified specific colorectal cancer-associated anaerobic bacteria, which almost exclusively reside in the colon. Bacteraemia with these bacteria could be an indicator of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: A prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the predictors of failure of nonoperative treatment, defined as the patient undergoing surgery for symptomatic, atraumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears. We present the 10-year follow-up data of this population to determine if predictors for surgery change over time, and secondarily we report the outcomes of the cohort. METHODS: At the time of enrollment, demographic, symptom, rotator cuff anatomy, and patient-reported outcome data were collected in patients with symptomatic, atraumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears. Patients underwent a standard physical therapy protocol for 6 to 12 weeks. Patient data were then collected at 1, 2, 5, 7, and 10 years. Failure of nonoperative treatment was defined as the patient electing to undergo surgery. RESULTS: Of the 452 patients in the original cohort, 20 patients (5%) withdrew from the study, 37 (9%) died before 10 years, and 40 (9%) were otherwise lost to follow-up. A total of 115 patients (27.0%) underwent a surgical procedure at some point during the 10-year follow-up period. Of these patients, 56.5% underwent surgery within 6 months of enrollment and 43.5%, between 6 months and 10 years. Low patient expectations regarding the efficacy of physical therapy were found to be a predictor of early surgery. Workers' Compensation status and activity level were more important predictors of later surgery. Patient-reported outcome measures all improved following physical therapy. For patients who did not undergo a surgical procedure, patient-reported outcome measures did not decline over the 10-year follow-up period. CONCLUSIONS: Low patient expectations regarding the efficacy of physical therapy were found to be a predictor of early surgery, whereas Workers' Compensation status and activity level were predictors of later surgery. Physical therapy was successful in >70% of patients with symptomatic, atraumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tears at 10 years. Outcome measures improved with physical therapy and did not decline over the 10-year follow-up period. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic Level I. Glutamine is a critical amino acid that serves as an energy source, building block, and signaling molecule for the heart tissue and the immune system. However, the role of glutamine metabolism in regulating cardiac remodeling following myocardial infarction (MI) is unknown. In this study, we show in adult male mice that glutamine metabolism is altered both in the remote (contractile) area and in infiltrating macrophages in the infarct area after permanent left anterior descending artery occlusion. We found that metabolites related to glutamine metabolism were differentially altered in macrophages at days 1, 3, and 7 after MI using untargeted metabolomics. Glutamine metabolism in live cells was increased after MI relative to no MI controls. Gene expression in the remote area of the heart indicated a loss of glutamine metabolism. Glutamine administration improved LV function at days 1, 3, and 7 after MI, which was associated with improved contractile and metabolic gene expression. Conversely, administration of BPTES, a pharmacological inhibitor of glutaminase-1, worsened LV function after MI. Neither glutamine nor BPTES administration impacted gene expression or bioenergetics of macrophages isolated from the infarct area. Our results indicate that glutamine metabolism plays a critical role in maintaining LV contractile function following MI, and that glutamine administration improves LV function. Glutamine metabolism may also play a role in regulating macrophage function, but macrophages are not responsive to exogenous pharmacological manipulation of glutamine metabolism.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact of L4-5 minimally invasive surgery (MIS)-TLIF on adjacent-level parameters. METHODS: This is a retrospective study performed on consecutive patients between January 2015-December 2019. The index- and adjacent-level segmental lordosis (SL) and disc angle (DA) were measured. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were collected preoperatively and at 3-24 months postoperatively. Factors influencing changes in adjacent-level parameters and the occurrence of adjacent segment degeneration (ASDeg) were assessed. RESULTS: One hundred and seventeen adult patients, averaging 65.5 years of age and slight preponderance of female (56.4%), were analyzed. L4-5 SL decreased at 2 years (p<0.05), but L4-5 DA significantly increased at all timepoints (p<0.05). While L3-4 SL and DA significantly decreased at all timepoints (p<0.05), L5-S1 SL decreased at 3 and 12 months (p<0.05) and L5-S1 DA only significantly decreased at 2 years (p<0.05). All PROs improved significantly (p<0.0001). The ASDeg rate was 19.7% at 2.2 years. Cephalad and caudal ASDeg rates were 12.0% and 10.3%, respectively. Eight patients (6.8%) required adjacent-level reoperations, mainly at L3-4 (6 cases). The use of expandable cage significantly reduced the odds of caudal ASDeg (OR 0.15, p=0.037), but had no significant effect on cephalad ASDeg.. CONCLUSIONS: L4-5 MIS-TLIF had a more consistent effect on L3-4 than L5-S1. Although adjacent-level SL and DA decreased over time, their association with ASDeg appears limited, suggesting a multifactorial etiology. L4-5 MIS-TLIF provides demonstrable clinical benefits with lasting PRO improvements and low adjacent-level reoperations.

Follow-up of previously healthy patients surviving cryptococcal meningitis found that cryptococcal antigen could be detected for more than one year in serum from 38 of 44 (86%) patients and in CSF from 20 of 31 patients (67%), far beyond the time of culture conversion. The speed of titer decline, measured as the number of days for a two fold drop in titer to occur, was slower in serum than in CSF. Speed of decline of antigen titers was much slower in serum and CSF for patients infected with C. gattii than C. neoformans. The speed of decline in CSF and serum titers was also much slower in patients who had received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt for increased intracranial pressure. The variable and extraordinarily slow rate of clearance in our patients did not appear to reflect differences in disease control but rather differences in species and shunting for increased intracranial pressure.

Background: Older adults with heart failure are at elevated risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). Research suggests that insomnia and depressive episodes contribute somewhat dissociable impacts on risk for AD/ADRD in this patient population, although the temporal ordering of effects is unknown. Objective: This study examined time to dementia diagnosis among patients with comorbid insomnia and/or depressive episodes in an epidemiological sample. Methods: Secondary data analyses were conducted using a cohort study of 203,819 Veterans with a primary admission diagnosis of heart failure in 129 VA Medical Centers. Results: Patients with diagnoses of both insomnia and depressive episodes had the shortest time to a dementia diagnosis at both 1-year (Hazard ratio = 1.43, 95% CI [1.36, 1.51]) and 3-year follow-up time points (Hazard ratio = 1.40, 95% CI [1.34, 1.47]) versus patients with one or neither comorbidity. Conclusions: Individuals with both comorbidities had the shortest time to dementia onset. Screening for these comorbidities may help to identify patients at elevated risk of dementia who could benefit from enhanced monitoring or early intervention strategies for more rapid detection and management of dementia symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (VOD/SOS) is a potentially life-threatening complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), especially in severe cases. Patient outcomes are improved with prompt treatment; however, diagnosing this disease is challenging as many clinical symptoms of VOD/SOS overlap with other post-HCT complications. A biomarker-based prognostic test for the assessment of VOD/SOS risk, termed "VODCheck" was developed in a previous study but has not yet been validated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the accuracy of VODCheck as a prognostic test for VOD/SOS in an independent cohort of patients. STUDY DESIGN: VODCheck incorporates hyaluronan (HA), angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2), and thrombomodulin (TM) based on their association with VOD/SOS, their analytical characteristics, and their ability to complement each other in a multivariate prognostic model. To validate VODCheck we measured plasma biomarker levels from a subset of patients enrolled in the control arm of a phase 3 study that tested VOD/SOS prophylaxis. We used a hierarchical design with prespecified primary (day 7), secondary A (day 15), and secondary B (day 1) hypotheses to verify the prognostic accuracy of VODCheck post-HCT. The cases of VOD/SOS (n = 22) were age-matched ∼1:3 with controls (n = 65). RESULTS: VODCheck was prognostic of VOD/SOS risk at all 3 time points with an area under the curve (AUC) of .815 (P < .001) for day 7, .836 (P < .001) for day 15, and .706 (P = .002) for day 1 post-HCT. A multivariate analysis confirmed the prognostic accuracy of VODCheck after adjustment for confounders such as age, VOD/SOS risk status, primary disease, and ozogamicin treatment. CONCLUSION: VODCheck was validated as an independent predictor of risk for VOD/SOS within 15 days post-HCT and appears to provide clinicians with actionable information to improve patient care.

OBJECTIVE: Baseball and softball pose unique risks for sport-related concussion (SRC). Although these are not collision sports, concussions in baseball and softball can nonetheless involve high-speed impacts. In a regional, single-institution cohort of baseball and softball athletes who sustained an SRC, the current study sought to 1) describe the mechanisms of injury that led to SRC, and 2) compare initial symptom burden and recovery metrics across mechanisms, including time to return to learn (RTL), time to symptom resolution, and time to return to play (RTP) by mechanism of injury. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed of baseball and softball athletes 12 to 23 years old who sustained an SRC between November 2017 and April 2022. Mechanisms of injury were divided into two categories: 1) contact mechanism (i.e., what initiated contact with the injured player, such as head-to-ball), and 2) player mechanism (i.e., the action the injured player was performing at the time of injury, such as fielding). The recovery outcomes of time to RTL, symptom resolution, and RTP were compared between mechanisms using bivariate analysis and multivariable regression analysis, controlling for sex, age, time to present to concussion clinic, and initial total symptom score. RESULTS: The sample included 58 baseball and softball players (60.3% female, mean age 16.0 ± 1.9 years). Most SRCs (62.1%) occurred during competition. Head-to-ball (50.0%) was the most common contact mechanism, followed by head-to-head/body (31.0%) and head-to-wall/ground/equipment (17.2%). Fielding (63.8%) was the most common player mechanism, followed by drills (20.7%) and running (13.8%). SRCs sustained in practice had significantly longer RTL (median 10.0 [interquartile range (IQR) 3.3-16.3] vs 4.0 [IQR 2.0-8.0] days; U = 421.5, p = 0.031) and symptom resolution (37.0 [IQR 18.0-90.0] vs 14.0 [IQR 7.0-41.0] days; U = 406.5, p = 0.025) compared with SRCs sustained in competition. Multivariable regression analysis revealed that head-to-wall/ground/equipment contact mechanism was associated with longer RTL (ß = 0.30, 95% CI 0.07-0.54, p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: The current study found that SRCs in baseball and softball occurred more often in competition than in practice. Head-to-ball and fielding were the most common contact and player mechanisms, respectively. SRCs sustained in practice were associated with longer time to RTL and symptom resolution, and head-to-wall/ground/equipment was associated with longer RTL in multivariable regression analysis. These results provide empirical data to improve concussion safety in baseball/softball.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have investigated associations between gender, symptom resolution, and time to return to play following sport-related concussion (SRC). However, there is a notable gap in research regarding the association between gender and return to learn (RTL) in adolescents. Therefore, this study 1) compared the patterns of RTL between boys and girls who are high school student athletes, and 2) evaluated the possible association between gender and time to RTL after adjusting for covariates. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of a prospective surveillance program that monitored concussion recovery of athletes in high schools throughout the state of Maine between February 2015 and January 2023 was performed. The primary independent variable was gender, dichotomized as boys and girls. The primary outcome was time to RTL, defined by the number of days for an athlete to return to school without accommodations. Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare RTL between the boys and girls. Each athlete's RTL status was dichotomized (i.e., returned vs had not returned) at several time points following injury (i.e., 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks), and chi-square tests were performed to compare the proportions who achieved RTL between groups. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the predictive value of gender on RTL. Covariates included age, number of previous concussions, history of learning disability or attention-deficit disorder or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, history of a psychological condition, history of headaches or migraines, initial Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT3/SCAT5) score, and days to evaluation. RESULTS: Of 895 high school athletes, 488 (54.5%) were boys and 407 (45.5%) were girls. There was no statistically significant difference in median [IQR] days to RTL between genders (6.0 [3.0-11.0] vs 6.0 [3.0-12.0] days; U = 84,365.00, p < 0.375). A greater proportion of boys successfully returned to learn without accommodations by 3 weeks following concussion (93.5% vs 89.4%; χ2 = 4.68, p = 0.030), but no differences were found at 1, 2, or 4 weeks. A multivariable model predicting days to RTL showed that gender was not a significant predictor of RTL (p > 0.05). Longer days to evaluation (ß = 0.10, p = 0.021) and higher initial SCAT3/SCAT5 scores (ß = 0.15, p < 0.001) predicted longer RTL. CONCLUSIONS: In a cohort of high school athletes, RTL did not differ between boys and girls following SRC. Gender was not a significant predictor of RTL. Longer days to evaluation and higher initial symptom scores were associated with longer RTL.

A previously unreported polymorph of 5,11-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (TIPS ADT), Form II, crystallizes from melt-processed TIPS ADT films blended with 16 ± 1 wt % medium density polyethylene (PE). TIPS ADT/PE blends that initially are crystallized from the melt produce twisted TIPS ADT crystals of a metastable polymorph (Form IV, space group P1̅) with a brickwork packing motif distinct from the slipstack packing by solution-processed TIPS ADT crystals (Form I, space group P21/c) at room temperature. When these films were cooled to room temperature and subsequently annealed at 100 °C, near a PE melting temperature of 110 °C, Form II crystals nucleated and grew while consuming Form IV. The growth rate and orientations of Form II crystals were predetermined by the twisting pitch and growth direction of the original banded spherulites in the melt-processed films of the blends. Notably, the Form IV → II transition was not observed during thermal annealing of neat TIPS ADT films without PE. The presence of the mobile PE phase during thermal annealing of TIPS ADT/PE blend films increases the diffusion rate of TIPS ADT molecules, and the rate of nucleation of Form II. Form IV crystals are more conductive but less emissive compared to Form II crystals.
