RESUMEN

The blue shifting of vibrational frequencies in hydrogen bonded molecules, as observed in aqueous environments, has been attributed to local partial charge transfer from solvation. Here, we extrapolate the blue shift model to the stronger ionic interactions between hydrogen bond acceptors associated with protonation through augmented pH levels and competitive interactions with counter ion pairing. The chemical model we utilize in this work is the aqueous pyridine-pyridinium equilibrium to characterize the blue shifts observed in the pyridinium chloride ionic system. The observed agreement between observed experimental and calculated spectral shifts shows that the blue shifting model can be extrapolated to stronger interactions and accurately describe the nature of the hydrogen bond.

RESUMEN

A new approach using orthogonal analytical techniques is developed for chemical identification. High resolution mass spectrometry and infrared ion spectroscopy are applied through a 5-level confidence paradigm to demonstrate the effectiveness of nontargeted workflow for the identification of hazardous organophosphates. Triphenyl phosphate is used as a surrogate organophosphate for occupational exposure, and silicone wristbands are used to represent personal samplers. Spectral data of a target compound is combined with spectral data of the sodium adduct and quantum chemical calculations to achieve a confirmed identification. Here, we demonstrate a nontargeted workflow that identifies organophosphate exposure and provides a mechanism for selecting validated methods for quantitative analyses.

RESUMEN

Porphyrins are attractive chromophores for application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), as judicious tuning of donor-acceptor properties can enable excellent near-infrared (NIR) absorption and exceptional device performance. Here, we report a porphyrin-based dye (SM85) conjugated to the planar strong electron donor, indolizine, designed to extend absorption further into the NIR region by inducing π-π interactions such as head-to-tail dye aggregation. The optoelectronic consequences of indolizine incorporation in SM85 include raising the ground-state oxidation potential and broadening and red-shifting ultraviolet-visible-NIR absorptions, along with increased molar absorptivity when compared to the dye SM315. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations confirm the push-pull character of SM85, which features an overlap of frontier occupied and unoccupied orbitals. Steady-state spectrophotometric analyses reveal the presence of solution aggregates via absorption and emission spectroscopies. Aggregate modes were probed by DFT and TD-DFT analyses, and plausible models are presented. SM85-based DSC devices demonstrate a 5.7% power conversion efficiency (PCE) at full sun (7.4% PCE at 10% sun) with an exceptional improvement to the incident photon-to-current conversion onset at ∼850 nm. Current dynamics measurements, time-correlated single photon counting, and computational analyses are used to better understand device performances. This study puts forward a novel intramolecular charge-transfer porphyrin system with a dramatic shift into the NIR region, as is needed for nonprecious metal-based sensitizers, and provides an example of controlled, donor-acceptor-mediated aggregation as a complementary strategy to traditional donor-acceptor modifications to single-molecule π-systems in accessing enhancements in long wavelength light harvesting in molecular-based optoelectronic devices.

RESUMEN

Iodine binding to thiophene rings in dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) has been hypothesized to be performance degrading in a number of literature cases. Binding of iodine to dyes near the semiconductor surface can promote undesirable electron transfers and lower the overall efficiency of devices. Six thiophene or furan containing dye analogs were synthesized to analyze iodine binding to the dyes via Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis studies, device performance metrics and density functional theory (DFT) based computations. Evidence suggests I2 binds thiophene-based dyes stronger than furan-based dyes. This leads to higher DSC device currents and voltages from furan analogues, and longer electron lifetimes in DSC devices using furan based dyes. Raman spectrum of the TiO2 surface-bound dyes reveals additional and more instense peaks for thiophene dyes in the presence of I2 relative to no I2. Additionally, broader and shifted UV-Vis peaks are observed for thiophene dyes in the presence of I2 on TiO2 films suggesting significant interaction between the dye molecules and I2. These observations are also supported by DFT and TD-DFT calculations which indicate the absence of a key geometric energy minimum in the dye-I2 ground state for furan dyes which are readily observed for the thiophene based analogues.

RESUMEN

Although ammonia borane is isoelectronic with ethane and they have similar structures, BH3NH3 exhibits rather atypical bonding compared to that in CH3CH3. The central bond in ammonia borane is actually a coordinate covalent or dative bond rather than the conventional covalent C-C bond in ethane where each atom donates one electron. In addition, strong intermolecular dihydrogen bonds can form between two or more ammonia borane molecules compared to the relatively weak dispersion forces between ethane molecules. As a result, ammonia borane's physical properties are very sensitive to the environment. For example, gas-phase and solid-state ammonia borane have very different BN bond lengths and BN stretching frequencies, which led to much debate in the literature. It has been demonstrated that the use of cluster models based on experimental crystal structures led to better agreement between theory and experiment. Here, we employ a variety of cluster models to track how the interaction energies, bond lengths, and vibrational normal modes evolve with the size and structural characteristics of the clusters. The M06-2X/6-311++G(2df,2pd) level of theory was selected for this analysis on the basis of favorable comparison with CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ data for the ammonia borane monomer and dimer. Fourteen unique fully optimized molecular cluster geometries, (BH3NH3)n≤12, and nine crystal models, (BH3NH3)n≤19, were used to elucidate how the local environment impacts ammonia borane's physical properties. Computational results for the BN stretching frequencies are also compared directly to the Raman spectrum of solid ammonia borane at 77 K using Raman under liquid nitrogen spectroscopy (RUNS). A strong linear correlation was found to exist between the BN bond length and stretching frequency, from an isolated monomer to the most distorted BH3NH3 unit in a cluster or crystal structure model. Excellent agreement was seen between the frequencies computed for the largest crystal model and the RUNS experimental spectra (typically within a few wavenumbers).

RESUMEN

The development of deep red and near infrared emissive materials with high quantum yields is an important challenge. Several classes of squaraine dyes have demonstrated high quantum yields, but require significantly red-shifted absorptions to access the NIR window. Additionally, squaraine dyes have typically shown narrow Stokes shifts, which limits their use in living biological imaging applications due to dye emission interference with the light source. Through the incorporation of indolizine heterocycles we have synthesized novel indolizine squaraine dyes with increased Stokes shifts (up to >0.119 eV, >50 nm increase) and absorptions substantially further into the NIR region than an indoline squaraine benchmark (726 nm versus 659 nm absorption maxima). These materials have shown significantly enhanced water solubility, which is unique for squaraine dyes without water-solubilizing substituents. Absorption, electrochemical, computational, and fluorescence studies were undertaken and exceptional fluorescence quantum yields of up 12 % were observed with emission curves extending beyond 850 nm.

RESUMEN

A series of near-infrared (NIR) organic emissive materials were synthesized and the photophysical properties analyzed. The donor-acceptor-donor materials were designed with thienopyrazine and thienothiadiazole acceptor groups with thiophene-, furan-, and triphenylamine-based donor groups. The absorption and emission spectra were found to be widely tunable on the basis of the donor and acceptor groups selected. Computational analysis confirms these materials undergo an intramolecular charge-transfer event upon photoexcitation. Large Stokes shifts of ∼150 nm were observed and rationalized by computational analysis of geometry changes in the excited state. Fluorescence studies on the dye series reveal maximum peak emission wavelengths near 900 nm and a quantum yield exceeding 16% for 4,6-bis(2-thienyl)thieno[3,4-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole. Additionally, several dyes were found to have reasonable quantum yields within this NIR region (>1%), with emission wavelengths reaching 1000 nm at the emission curve onset. Photostability studies were conducted on these materials in an ambient oxygen environment, revealing excellent stability in the presence of oxygen from all the dyes studied relative to a benchmark cyanine dye (ICG) during photoexcitation with exceptional photostability from the 4,6-bis(5'-dodecyl-[2,2'-bithiophene]-5-yl)thieno[3,4-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole derivative.

RESUMEN

Electrochemical reduction method is used for the first time to significantly improve the photo-electrochemical performance of α-Fe2O3 photoanode prepared on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates by spin-coating aqueous solution of Fe(NO3)3 followed by thermal annealing in air. Photocurrent density of α-Fe2O3 thin film photoanode can be enhanced 25 times by partially reducing the oxide film to form more conductive Fe3O4 (magnetite). Fe3O4 helps facilitate efficient charge transport and collection from the top α-Fe2O3 layer upon light absorption and charge separation to yield enhanced photocurrent density. The optimal enhancement can be obtained for <50 nm films because of the short charge transport distance for the α-Fe2O3 layer. Thick α-Fe2O3 films require more charge and overpotential than thinner films to achieve limited enhancement because of the sluggish charge transport over a longer distance to oxidize water. Electrochemical reduction of α-Fe2O3 in unbuffered pH-neutral solution yields much higher but unstable photocurrent enhancement because of the increase in local pH value accompanied by proton reduction at a hematite surface.

RESUMEN

Desirable components for dye-sensitzed solar cell (DSC) sensitizers and fluorescent imaging dyes include strong donating building blocks coupled with well-balanced acceptor functionalities for absorption beyond the visible range. We have evaluated the effects of increasing acceptor strengths and incorporation of dye morphology controlling groups on molar absorptivity and absorption breadth with indolizine donor-based dyes. Indolizine-based D-A and D-π-A sensitizers incorporating bis-rhodanine, tricyanofuran (TCF), and cyanoacrylic acid functionalities were analyzed for performance in DSC devices. The TCF derivatives were also evaluated as near-infrared (NIR)-emissive materials with the AH25 emissions extending past 1000 nm.

RESUMEN

A series of thienopyrazine-based donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent compounds were synthesized through a rapid, palladium-catalyzed C-H activation route. The dyes were studied through computational analysis, electrochemical properties analysis, and characterization of their photophysical properties. Large Stokes shifts of approximately 175 nm were observed, which led to near-infrared emission. Computational evaluation shows that the origin of this large Stokes shift is a significant molecular reorganization particularly about the D-A bond. The series exhibits quantum yields of up to φ = >4%, with emission maxima ranging from 725 to 820 nm. The emission is strong in solution, in thin films, and also in isolation at the single-molecule level. Their stable emission at the single-molecule level makes these compounds good candidates for single-molecule photon sources in the near-infrared.

RESUMEN

A near-infrared fluorescent probe based on methylene blue (p-NBMB) was developed for the detection of nitroreductase. Conjugating methylene blue with a p-nitrobenzyl moiety enables it to be activated by nitroreductase-catalyzed 1,6-elimination, resulting in the release of an active methylene blue fluorophore.

RESUMEN

Treatment of 1,3-bis(3'-butylimidazolyl-1'-yl)benzene diiodide with elemental sulfur in the presence of a base produced a bis(N-heterocyclic thione) (NHT) pincer ligand precursor. Its reaction with PdCl2(CH3CN)2 produced chloro[1,3-bis(3'-butylimidazole-2'-thione-κ-S)benzene-κ-C]palladium(ii), a 6,6-fused ring SCS-NHT palladium pincer complex. This air stable compound is, to our knowledge, the first SCS pincer complex that utilizes N-heterocyclic thione (NHT) donor groups. The molecular structures of the ligand precursor and the palladium complex were determined by X-ray crystallography and computational studies provided insight into the interconversion between its rac and meso conformations. The photophysical properties of the complex were established, and its catalytic activity in Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira cross-coupling reactions was evaluated.
