RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIM: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS), attributed to triplication of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21), exhibit a reduced incidence of solid tumors. However, the prevalence of glioblastoma among individuals with DS remains a contentious issue in epidemiological studies. Therefore, this study examined the gliomagenicity in Ts1Cje mice, a murine model of DS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed the Sleeping Beauty transposon system for the integration of human oncogenes into cells of the subventricular zone of neonatal mice. RESULTS: Notably, Sleeping Beauty-mediated de novo murine gliomagenesis was significantly suppressed in Ts1Cje mice compared to wild-type mice. In glioblastomas of Ts1je mice, we observed an augmented presence of M1-polarized tumor-associated macrophages and microglia, known for their anti-tumor efficacy in the early stage of tumor development. CONCLUSION: Our findings in a mouse model of DS offer novel perspectives on the diminished gliomagenicity observed in individuals with DS.

BACKGROUND: Acne is one of the most common skin problems among human populations. A facial cleanser formulated with alkyl ether carboxylate (AEC) and alkyl carboxylate (AC) can improve acne by cleansing sebum on facial skin but cannot effectively remove keratotic plugs in the skin pores. Recently, we confirmed that Tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and L-arginine (Tris/Arg) is able to reduce sebum levels, disrupt keratotic plugs in vitro and decrease pore size on facial skin. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of the Tris/Arg-formulated cleanser with the AEC/AC cleanser in Thai subjects with acne. METHODS: We designed a randomized, double-blind, controlled, parallel trial. Thirty-four male Thai subjects with mild to moderate acne were assigned to one of two groups: one group used the Tris/Arg cleanser while the other used the AEC/AC-based cleanser twice a day for 4 weeks. RESULTS: After 4 weeks, significant decreases in noninflammatory acne were observed in both groups, yet significant decreases in inflammatory acne were only observed in the Tris/Arg cleanser group. The sebum level prior to and 30 minutes after facial washing showed no change in either group. The average pore size with keratotic plugs on the cheeks was significantly decreased in the Tris/Arg group. More than half of subjects in both groups observed acne improvement but more subjects in the Tris/Arg group noted pore size improvement. CONCLUSION: The Tris/Arg formulated cleanser has a high efficacy for significantly reducing both noninflammatory and inflammatory acne accompanied by decreases in pore size with keratotic plugs in male Thai subjects.

RESUMEN

Enzymatic glyco-modification of transparent cellulose films with lactose was achieved by nonaqueous biocatalysis, and rat hepatocyte attachment behavior to the lactose-modified cellulose films was investigated. Regenerated cellulose films were incubated with lactose using a surfactant-enveloped cellulase in lithium chloride/dimethylacetamide solvent at 37 degrees C for 24 h, and lactose molecules were successfully introduced to the cellulose films. The initial cell adhesion on the lactose-modified cellulose films was superior to the original cellulose film. In the absence of serum, hepatocytes were significantly attached only on the lactose-modified cellulose films. This process was markedly suppressed by the addition of free lactose as an inhibitor. These results suggest that such cell adhesion proceeded through a direct interaction between galactose residues on the cellulose films and asialoglycoprotein receptors on the rat liver cell surface. This novel approach for surface glyco-modification of a cellulose matrix and its biofunctional properties are expected to provide potential application as a bioactive scaffold for cell culture engineering.
