RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Life satisfaction is a comprehensive psychological index to measure a person's life quality. Previous studies have found that population sociological factors, physiological factors, psychological factors, and social factors all affect life satisfaction, but few studies have looked at the role of stable psychological factors, such as personality, in life satisfaction. Thus, this study combined previous research results and theories to study the current situation of college students' life satisfaction and its correlation with personality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to comprehensively assess the life satisfaction levels among university students enrolled in a medical college in China, explore their correlation with various demographic factors and personality traits, identify potential areas for intervention, and provide recommendations for improving students' overall well-being and fostering the development of a positive and healthy personality. METHODS: A stratified cluster sampling method was used to select college students from a university. The questionnaire consists of general characteristics, a life satisfaction scale, and the Big Five Inventory. Descriptive statistical methods were conducted to describe the college students' life satisfaction status; an analysis of variance was performed to compare the score of life satisfaction among different demographic features; and the correlation between the score of life satisfaction and the Big Five Inventory was also analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 3116 subjects were included in this survey. The life satisfaction of females was higher than that of males in the dimensions of family, friends, school, and overall satisfaction (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of males in the self dimension was higher than that of females (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of different weight types had statistical significance in the life dimension (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of family, school, and overall well-being among smoking college students was lower than that of non-smoking college students (p<0.05). The life satisfaction of non-drinking college students in family, friends, life, school, and overall life satisfaction scores was higher than those of drinking college students (p<0.05). College students who get plenty of sleep a day (more than eight hours) scored higher life satisfaction scores in the self dimension than sleep-deprived college students (p<0.05). In addition to the family dimension, students taking long physical exercise breaks every day had higher life satisfaction scores in every dimension than students lacking physical exercise (p<0.05). The mean score of personality in the agreeableness and openness dimensions is the highest. Correlation analysis showed that the personality score in each dimension was positively correlated with the life satisfaction score in each dimension except for the neuroticism dimension of personality (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The life satisfaction of college students is different for different lifestyles. The student management department should pay attention to the physical and mental health of college students with low life satisfaction and further find out the reasons for the difference in life satisfaction. Meanwhile, education should be strengthened for college students and encourage them to give up smoking and alcohol; strengthen physical training; and university education should strengthen the personality cultivation of college students.

RESUMEN

Major depressive disorder is a serious and prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder, affecting more than 350 million people worldwide. Here, sodium selenite (SS) was selected as the selenite supplement to improve the behavior in a mouse model of depression induced by As. SS may be not the optimal speciation for selenite supplementation and the source of the SS used in the study was not disclosed. There are many mouse models of depression and anxiety; however, in the current study, a classical mouse model of depression was not used. Thus, several questions still need to be further discussed. Taken together, the results indicate that SS may be not the optimal speciation as an effective therapy for As-induced anxiety-/depression-like behavior.

RESUMEN

Recently, we read with great interest an article reporting a relationship between dietary tryptophan and the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, baseline characteristics differed among tertiles of cumulative dietary tryptophan intake in that study, which may be a confounding factor for the relationship between dietary tryptophan and the risk of obesity and T2D.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) have a higher rate of suicide compared to the general population. Psychosocial factors closely correlate with suicidal ideation and it is essential to explain the relationships between related factors among PLWHA. OBJECTIVES: To establish a structural equation model and examine direct and indirect effects of social support, coping strategy, depression symptoms and suicidal ideation among PLWHA. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 504 PLWHA completed a set of questionnaires in the HIV clinic of Changsha Infectious Disease Hospital between December 2015 and January 2016. RESULTS: Among the 504 respondents, a total of 27.2% (n=137) had experienced suicidal ideation in their lifetime. The goodness of fit for the two structural equations model was highly satisfactory. Depression symptoms had a significant direct impact on suicidal ideation (ß 1=0.401, ß 2=0.422), while problem-focused coping (ß=-0.067), emotion-focused coping (ß=-0.081) and social support (ß=-0.137) had a significant indirect effect with suicidal ideation via depression symptoms. Factors of total effects were ranked from large to small as follows: depression, social support, emotion-focused coping and problem-focused coping. CONCLUSION: Findings provide more understanding of direct and indirect associations between variables, suggesting that depression screening services, and the strengthening of social support and psychological care services among PLWHA can potentially prevent suicide.

RESUMEN

Fatty acid (FA) metabolism, including the uptake, de novo synthesis and oxidation of FAs, is critical for the survival, proliferation, differentiation and metastasis of cancer cells. Several bodies of evidence have confirmed the metabolic reprogramming of FAs that occurs during cancer development. The present review aimed to evaluate FAs in terms of how the hallmarks of cancer are gradually established in tumourigenesis and tumour progression, and consider the auxoaction and exact mechanisms of FA metabolism in these processes. In addition, this interaction in the tumour microenvironment was also discussed. Based on the role of FA metabolism in tumour development, targeting FA metabolism may effectively target cancer, affecting a number of important characteristics of cancer progression and survival.

RESUMEN

Microbiota has been widely considered to play a critical role in human carcinogenesis. Recent evidence demonstrated that microbiota, epithelial barrier and inflammation has made up a tightly interdependent triangle during the process of carcinogenesis. Hence, we discussed the triangle relationship of microbiota dysbiosis, epithelial barrier dysfunction and dysregulated immune responses to elucidate the mechanisms by which microbiota induces carcinogenesis, especially highlighting the reciprocal crosstalk between transforming growth factor-ß signaling and every side of the tumorigenic triangle. This sophisticated interaction will provide insight into the basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis and may bring new hope to cancer prevention and therapeutic intervention.

RESUMEN

Mouse models can closely mimic human oral squamous epithelial carcinogenesis, greatly expand the in vivo research possibilities, and play a critical role in the development of diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. With the development of the recent research on the contribution of immunity/inflammation to cancer initiation and progression, mouse models have been divided into two categories, namely, immunocompromised and immunocompetent mouse models. And thus, this paper will review these two kinds of models applied in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma to provide a platform to understand the complicated histological, molecular, and genetic changes of oral squamous epithelial tumorigenesis.

RESUMEN

GnRH sterilization vaccines have been developed for various practical and clinical reasons. However, conjugation of GnRH peptide to carrier protein has many drawbacks, hampering the further commercialization of GnRH vaccines. In this study, a new nonconjugated GnRH vaccine, D-Lys6-GnRH-tandem-dimer peptide (TDK), emulsified in Specol adjuvant was investigated for its immunocastration efficacy in young male rats. Prepubertal male rats were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 12): control (no treatment), surgically castrated or immunized against 100 µg TDK in Specol adjuvant at 6 weeks of age (with a booster 8 weeks later). Blood samples (for antibody titers and hormone concentrations) were collected at 2-week intervals until rats were killed (18 weeks of age). Compared to intact controls, active immunization against TDK reduced (P < 0.05) serum concentrations of testosterone, inhibin B, LH and FSH, prevented the onset of spermatogenesis at puberty. Furthermore, mRNA expressions of GnRH receptor, LH-ß and FSH-ß in the pituitary, LH receptor, FSH receptor, inhibin α, ßA and ßB subunit in the testes were decreased in immunocastrated rats compared to intact controls (P < 0.05). These results demonstrate for the first time that GnRH-tandem-dimer peptide emulsified in Specol is a promising veterinary sterilization medicine.

RESUMEN

Obesity is a risk of cardiovascular diseases. Our previous studies revealed that serum calcium level may have influence in the blood pressure to older male subjects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between total serum calcium level and overweight and obesity subjects. In our study, overweight and obesity status and total serum calcium level were measured among 2,503 subjects, at age range of 22-94 years, who were recruited for the routine health screening in 2006. The estimated mean for age (p < 0.001), white blood cell count (p = 0.037), hemoglobin concentration (p < 0.001), red blood cell count (p < 0.001), total serum calcium level (p < 0.001), total cholesterol weight (p < 0.001), HDL-cholesterol (p < 0.001), LDL-cholesterol (p < 0.001), and triglyceride (p < 0.001) of overweight and obesity subjects were significantly higher than those of non-overweight subjects. The prevalence of overweight/obesity in subjects according to the log-transformed total serum calcium level quartiles was 16.3-30.5 %. The prevalence of overweight/obesity subjects showed trends that were significant according to the total serum calcium level quartiles (p < 0.001). The odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for overweight/obesity of the second, third, and fourth quartiles compared to the lowest quartile were 1.407 (1.050-1.883), 1.543 (1.136-2.095), and 1.360 (0.995-1.859), respectively, after adjusting for sex and age (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that a higher prevalence of adult overweight/obesity is weakly associated with higher total serum calcium level in the Chinese population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To induce the differentiation of bone marrow stromall cells (BMSCs) isolated from Beagles into osteoblasts in vitro and identify the osteogenic potential and bioactivity of the BMSCs. METHODS: Primary cultured BMSCs isolated from Beagles were subcultured in mineralization medium to induce their differentiation into osteoblasts, whose morphological characteristics and proliferation status were observed by phase-contrast microscope. The osteogenic activity of the cells was evaluated with von Kossa staining of the mineralized nodules and determination of the alkaline phosphatase activity. RESULT: BMSCs cultured in vitro showed obvious osteogenic capacity in DMEM. Von Kossa staining of the mineralized nodules and alkaline phosphatase detection of the passaged cells both yielded positive results. CONCLUSION: BMSCs cultured in vitro contain osteogenic precursor cells, and the passaged cells possess osteogenic potential.
