RESUMEN

Achilles tendon injury has been increasing over recent years due to a variety of causes. The injury of the Achilles tendon is a disabling condition, which is difficult to treat if there is a gap or defect between the two ends of the disrupted tendon. Patients with a rupture of the Achilles tendon should be operated without delay. Most of the people in our country use flat pan in the latrine, which are at a same level of the toilet floor. Surface of the toilet pan breaks down and cause sharp cut. Some of the cases of open tendon injuries occur due to road traffic accident, cut by broken glass and also assault. It is generally accepted that surgical repair of fresh ruptures of the Achilles tendon gives excellent results. Objective of the study was to find out the evaluation of the results of primary repair of Open tendo-achilles injury (OTAI). This prospective study was done in the department of Casualty of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh in the period of Octy 2021 to June 2022. Patients who came with OTAI in casualty department were selected randomly. All cases were selected as OTAI, without associated injury of other leg muscles, posterior tibial artery and nerve within 12 hours. All patients underwent primary end to end repair by Modified Kessler's method. Evaluation of the results of primary repair of OTAI were carried out and were find out the common causes of injury, age and sex incidence, level of injury and to proposed a protocol for treating such cases in comfortable, cheap and convenient way for the patients. Operations were done at Casualty operation theatre (COT). Then 48 patients were followed up at the Department of Casualty. Among them 43(89.58%) of patients were able to stand on tip toes, 4(08.33%) of patients were not stand on tip toes of affected foot unsupported but able to stand on tip toes supported, 1(02.08%) of patients failed to stand on affected foot unsupported due to severe infection and wound gap. Final result were Excellent - 29(60.0%), Good - 14(30.0%), Fair - 4(8.0%), Poor - 1(2.0%). Repair of OTAI is not difficult but early diagnosis, proper surgical toileting, meticulous repair; adequate post-operative management is the key of success. So, the result of this study, treatment protocol can be followed, which is easy for surgeon and convenient and cheap for the patients.

The magnetic properties of disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 and ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskites were investigated through temperature- and field-dependent DC-magnetization measurements. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities revealed that antiferromagnetic ordering occurs at temperatures below 185 K for the disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 sample, whereas the ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskite exhibited a paramagnetic state throughout the entire temperature range examined. Notably, the disordered sample exhibited a glassy state, even at room temperature, which transformed into an antiferromagnetic state under higher applied magnetic fields. The magnetic ordering in the disordered Nd0.5Ba0.5Mn0.5Fe0.5O3-δ/2 perovskite and the magnetic-disordering state in the structurally ordered NdBaMnFeO6-δ perovskite could be attributed to the alteration of the oxidation state of Mn.

Surface Enhanced Resonance Raman (SERS) is a powerful optical technique, which can help enhance the sensitivity of Raman spectroscopy aided by noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). However, current SERS-NPs are often suboptimal, which can aggregate under physiological conditions with much reduced SERS enhancement. Herein, a robust one-pot method has been developed to synthesize SERS-NPs with more uniform core diameters of 50 nm, which is applicable to both non-resonant and resonant Raman dyes. The resulting SERS-NPs are colloidally stable and bright, enabling NP detection with low-femtomolar sensitivity. An algorithm has been established, which can accurately unmix multiple types of SERS-NPs enabling potential multiplex detection. Furthermore, a new liposome-based approach has been developed to install a targeting carbohydrate ligand, i.e., hyaluronan, onto the SERS-NPs bestowing significantly enhanced binding affinity to its biological receptor CD44 overexpressed on tumor cell surface. The liposomal HA-SERS-NPs enabled visualization of spontaneously developed breast cancer in mice in real time guiding complete surgical removal of the tumor, highlighting the translational potential of these new glyco-SERS-NPs.

The Astragalus grahamianus (AG) Royle ex. Benth is traditionally used for the treatment of various human disorders. The current research work is aimed to explore the neuroprotective anti-Parkinson effects of various fractions of Astragalus grahamianus (A. grahamianus). Fine powder of Astragalus grahamianus was extracted with 70% methanol and then fractionated with various solvents on the basis of polarity. Standard protocols were used to investigate the bioactive constituents present in the various plant fractions. In-vitro antioxidant potential of various fractions was checked using diverse free radicals. In-vivo rats model was used to determined the neuroprotective effects of methanol fraction of A. grahamianus. The results revealed that various fractions of A. grahamianus contain flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, steroids, gums, terpenes, proteins, and carbohydrates except chloroform fraction lake the presence of steroids, cardiac glycosides, gums and saponins, aqueous fraction of steroids, terpenoids, gums and saponins, n-Hexane fraction steroids, carbohydrates, alkaloids, gums and flavonoids. The highest amount of total phenolic contents was found in AGME (32.67 ± 2.3 mg GAE / g). The AGME also showed enhanced free radicals cations potential against DPPH, ABTS and H2O2, respectively. The correlation between AOA (antioxidant activity) and TPC (total phenolic contents) revealed to be substantial. Relative R2 values for ABTS, H2O2, and DPPH activity are 0.9974, 0.9845, and 0.9678, respectively. The in-vivo neuroprotective activities showed significant results. Our findings highlight significant antioxidant, and neuroprotective possessions of AGME attributed to powerful bioactive compounds.

To investigate the interplay between varying anthropogenic activities and sediment dynamics in an urban river (Turag, Bangladesh), this study involved 37-sediment samples from 11 different sections of the river. Neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectrometry were utilized to quantify the concentrations of 14 metal(oid)s (Al, Ti, Co, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn). This study revealed significant toxic metal trends, with Principal coordinate analysis explaining 62.91 % of the variance from upstream to downstream. The largest RSDs for Zn(287 %), Mn(120 %), and Cd(323 %) implies an irregular regional distribution throughout the river. The UNMIX-model and PMF-model were utilized to identify potential sources of metal(oid)s in sediments. ∼63.65-66.7 % of metal(oid)s in sediments originated from anthropogenic sources, while remaining attributed to natural sources in both models. Strikingly, all measured metal(oid)s' concentrations surpassed the threshold effect level, with Zn and Ni exceeding probable effect levels when compared to SQGs.

A major contributing cause to breast cancer related death is metastasis. Moreover, breast cancer metastasis often shows little symptoms until a large area of the organs is occupied by metastatic cancer cells. Breast cancer multimodal imaging is attractive since it integrates advantages from several modalities, enabling more accurate cancer detection. Glycoprotein CD44 is overexpressed on most breast cancer cells and is the primary cell surface receptor for hyaluronan (HA). To facilitate breast cancer diagnosis, we report an indocyanine green (ICG) and HA conjugated iron oxide nanoparticle (NP-ICG-HA), which enabled active targeting to breast cancer by HA-CD44 interaction and detected metastasis with magnetic particle imaging (MPI) and near-infrared fluorescence imaging (NIR-FI). When evaluated in a transgenic breast cancer mouse model, NP-ICG-HA enabled the detection of multiple breast tumors in MPI and NIR-FI, providing more comprehensive images and a diagnosis of breast cancer. Furthermore, NP-ICG-HAs were evaluated in a lung metastasis model. Upon NP-ICG-HA administration, MPI showed clear signals in the lungs, indicating the tumor sites. This is the first time that HA-based NPs have enabled MPI of cancer. NP-ICG-HAs are an attractive platform for noninvasive detection of primary breast cancer and lung metastasis.

In biliary-pancreatic malignancy, the serum CA 19-9 is considered as a tumor marker. Its high level may indicate the presence of a malignant disorder, but it can also be raised in benign conditions and also in malignancies from other organs. The value may be normal even in malignant condition. This comparative study was conducted in the Department of Surgery of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Bangladesh from 1st June 2016 to 31st May 2017 to determine the sensitivity and specificity of CA 19-9 as a tumor marker in pancreatic malignancy in our perspective and to establish a cut-off value of CA 19-9 which might prove as a definitive indication of pancreatic malignancy. We found that when the cut off value of CA 19-9 is 38 U/ml (according to ROC curve), the sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV were 77.8%, 77.8%, 77.8%, 77.8% respectively. And if the serum CA 19-9 threshold was raised to 100 and 120 to diagnose pancreatic cancer, sensitivity became 72.2% and 66.7% and NPV 76.2% and 73.9% respectively. However, the specificity increased to 88.9% and 94.4% and the PPV increased to 86.7% and 92.3% respectively.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a plant extract has attracted significant attention in recent years. It is found as an alternative for other physicochemical approaches because of its simplicity, low cost, and eco-friendly rapid steps. In the present study, Ophiorrhiza mungos (Om)-mediated AgNPs have been shown to be effective bioadsorbents for methylene blue (MB) dye removal (88.1 ± 1.74%) just after 1 h at room temperature in the dark from an aqueous medium for the first time. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fit the experimental results having the correlation coefficient constants R2 = 0.9956 and R2 = 0.9838, respectively. From the Langmuir fittings, the maximum adsorption capacity and adsorption intensity were found to be 80.451 mg/g and 0.041, respectively, indicating the excellent performance and spontaneity of the process. Taking both models under consideration, interestingly, our findings indicated a fairly cooperative multilayer adsorption that might have been governed by chemisorption and physisorption, whereas the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics mechanism. The positive and low values of enthalpy (ΔH0 = 4.91 kJ/mol) confirmed that adsorption is endothermic and physical in nature; however, the negative free energy and positive entropy value (ΔS0 = 53.69 J/mol K) suggested that the adsorption is spontaneous. The biosynthesized adsorbent was successfully reused up to the fifth cycle. A proposed reaction mechanism for the adsorption process of MB dye onto Om-AgNPs is suggested. The present study may offer a novel finding such as an effective and sustainable approach for the removal of MB dye from water using biosynthesized Om-AgNPs as reusable adsorbents at a comparatively faster rate at a low dose for industrial applications.

Pre-exposure of plants to abiotic stressors may induce stress memory and improve tolerance to subsequent stresses. Here, 3-month-old Calligonum mongolicum seedlings were exposed to drought (60 days) with (primed) or without (unprimed) early drought exposure of 50 days, to determine whether this enhances seedling resistance and investigate possible underlying mechanisms. Compared to unprimed, primed seedlings had higher biomass, shoot relative water content (15% and 22%), chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids. They also had more superoxide anions (O2 -• ) and H2 O2 scavenging mechanisms through higher activity of SOD, CAT, APX, and dehydroascorbate reductase in assimilating shoots and roots, resulting in less ROS and oxidative stress damage. Plants also had higher ABA and JA but lower SA, likely reflecting an adaptive response to subsequent stress. Primed seedlings accumulated more IAA and brassinosteroids, which may account for their better growth. Accumulation of glycine betaine, pro, and total amino acids in assimilating shoots and roots of primed seedlings led to reduced osmotic stress. Drivers of responses of non-primed and primed seedlings to drought varied. Responses of primed seedlings were primarily characterized by more photosynthetic pigments, increased oxidative scavenging of O2 -• and H2 O2 , more phytohormones and osmolytes. Early drought priming of drought stress memory in C. mongolicum seedlings may provide a useful management approach to improve seedling establishment in vegetation restoration programs.

The processed forms of milk, branded liquid, and power milk available in Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh, were investigated for essential and trace metal/metalloids regarding nutritional and human health risk aspects. For this, the potential nutritional contribution, estimated daily intake (EDI) and non-carcinogenic risk for six different life stages with male and female categories, as well as the carcinogenic risk for children and adults of both genders, were addressed. In total, 46 branded liquid and powder milk samples were considered for this analysis employing atomic absorption spectroscopy. The concentration of essential elements showed the trends of K > Ca > Na > Mg > Fe > Zn > Mn > Cu and K > Ca > Na > Mg > Fe > Cu > Mn > Zn for liquid and powder milk samples, respectively, but the potentially hazardous one showed the same trends (Cr > Pb > Hg > As > Cd) for both items. Except for Cr, Hg, and Fe, the elemental compositions of both milk categories differed considerably (< 0.05). Compared to the threshold values for milk samples (liquid and powder), Fe (19% and 27%), Mn (100% and 63%), Cu (0% and 23%), Zn (94% and 0%), Pb (25% and 13%), and Cr (0% and 3%) showed above the permissible limits. The nutrient input was the highest for Ca (27.2% and 18.7%), followed by Mg, K, and Na. The EDI of studied elements was within the daily permissible limit in both the milk category (except age group (≤ 3) and the female category). The non-carcinogenic risk assessment showed that the age groups ≤ 3 for liquid milk and ≤ 3 and 3 < X ≤ 14 with female categories for powder milk exceeded the threshold level (> 1) in the case of Cr, Cd, As, Zn, and Mn. The probable carcinogenic risks indicated an unacceptable risk level (< 1.00E-04) for the ingestion of Cr through powder milk samples for children in male and female categories. Finally, it believes that green cow farming practices and green milk processing technology, as well as continuous monitoring of toxic metals, can limit the ultimate risk worldwide.

The concentrations of manganese, iron, copper, lead, nickel, cadmium, arsenic, copper and mercury were determined in 10 cultured fish species, which were collected from local markets of Chittagong, Bangladesh, in June 2021. Measurements were performed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, after acid digestion of the samples. In some cases, the concentration of the investigated elements was more than the maximum limit set by the WHO. Although the concentration of toxic elements in fishes was relatively high in some species, no health risk has been identified in comparison to the estimated daily intake and the maximum limit. Calculated hazard indices were below 1, which indicates the investigated fish would not cause human health risks. Carcinogenic risk indices for Cr, As, and Cu in all species were considered to be significant.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM), an endocrine syndrome characterized by high blood glucose levels due to abrogated insulin activity. The existing treatments for DM have side effects and varying degrees of efficacy. Therefore, it is paramount that novel approaches be developed to enhance the management of DM. Therapeutic plants have been accredited as having comparatively high efficacy with fewer adverse effects. The current study aims to elucidate the phytochemical profile, anti-hyperlipidemic, and anti-diabetic effects of methanolic extract D. salicifolia (leaves) in Alloxan-induced diabetic mice. Alloxan was injected intraperitoneally (150 mg kg-1, b.w), to induced diabetes in mice. The mice were divided into three groups (n=10). Group 1 (normal control) received normal food and purified water, Group II (diabetic control) received regular feed and clean water and group III (diabetic treated) received a methanolic extract of the plant (300 mg kg-1) for 28 days with a typical diet and clean water throughout the experiment. Blood samples were collected to checked serum glucose and concentration of LDL, TC, TG. The extract demonstrated significant antihyperglycemic activity (P 0.05), whereas improvements in mice's body weight and lipid profiles were observed after treatment with the extract. This study establishes that the extract has high efficacy with comparatively less toxicity that can be used for DM management.


Resumo Diabetes mellitus (DM) é uma síndrome endócrina caracterizada por níveis elevados de glicose no sangue devido à atividade anulada da insulina. Os tratamentos existentes para o DM têm efeitos colaterais e vários graus de eficácia. Portanto, é fundamental que novas abordagens sejam desenvolvidas para aprimorar o manejo do DM. As plantas terapêuticas foram acreditadas como tendo eficácia comparativamente alta com menos efeitos adversos. O presente estudo visa elucidar o perfil fitoquímico, efeitos anti-hiperlipidêmicos e antidiabéticos do extrato metanólico de D. salicifolia (folhas) em camundongos diabéticos induzidos por aloxana. Alloxan foi injetado por via intraperitoneal (150 mg kg-1, b.w), para induzir diabetes em camundongos. Os camundongos foram divididos em três grupos (n = 10). Grupo 1 (controle normal) recebeu ração normal e água purificada, Grupo II (controle diabético) recebeu ração regular e água limpa, e o grupo III (tratamento diabético) recebeu extrato metanólico da planta (300 mg kg-1) por 28 dias com uma dieta típica e água limpa durante todo o experimento. Amostras de sangue foram coletadas para verificar a glicose sérica e a concentração de LDL, TC, TG. O extrato demonstrou atividade anti-hiperglicêmica significativa (P 0,05), enquanto melhorias no peso corporal e no perfil lipídico dos camundongos foram observadas após o tratamento com o extrato. Este estudo estabelece que o extrato tem alta eficácia com comparativamente menos toxicidade e pode ser usado para o controle do DM.

Abstract Fish is the main source of animal protein for human diet. The aim of this study was to find out prevalence of pathogenic bacteria of two selected economically important fish of Pakistan namely Mahseer (Tor putitora) and Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Live fish samples from hatcheries and dead fish samples from different markets of study area were randomly collected. The fish samples were analyzed for isolation, identification and prevalence of bacteria. The isolated bacteria from study fish were identified through biochemical test and about 10 species of pathogenic bacteria were identified including the pathogenic bacteria to human and fish namely, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus iniae, Serratia spp. Citrobacter spp. Stenotrophomonas spp. Bacillus spp. and Salmonella spp. The bacterial percentage frequency of occurrence in Silver carp and Mahseer fish showed Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21.42%, Staphylococcus epidermidis 17.85%, Escherichia coli 11.90%, Staphylococcus aureus 9.52%, Citrobacter spp. 9.52%, Serratia spp. 8.33%, Streptococcus iniae 7.14%, Stenotrophomonas spp. 5.95%, Bacillus spp. 4.76% and Salmonella spp. 3.57%. The study revealed that Fish samples of Mahseer and Silver carp that were collected from markets have found more isolates (10 bacterial species) than did the fresh fish pond samples (03 bacterial species) of hatcheries. The occurrence of pathogenic bacteria in study fish showed risk factor for public health consumers.


Resumo O peixe é a principal fonte de proteína animal para a alimentação humana. O objetivo deste estudo foi descobrir a prevalência de bactérias patogênicas de dois peixes economicamente importantes selecionados do Paquistão, nomeadamente Mahseer (Tor putitora) e carpa prateada (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Amostras de peixes vivos de incubatórios e amostras de peixes mortos de diferentes mercados da área de estudo foram coletadas aleatoriamente. As amostras de peixes foram analisadas quanto ao isolamento, identificação e prevalência de bactérias. As bactérias isoladas dos peixes do estudo foram identificadas através de testes bioquímicos e cerca de 10 espécies de bactérias patogênicas foram identificadas incluindo as bactérias patogênicas para humanos e peixes, nomeadamente, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus iniae, Serratia spp. Citrobacter spp. Stenotrophomonas spp. Bacillus spp. e Salmonella spp. A porcentagem de freqüência de ocorrência bacteriana em carpa prateada e peixes Mahseer mostrou Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21,42%, Staphylococcus epidermidis 17,85%, Escherichia coli 11,90%, Staphylococcus aureus 9,52%, Citrobacter spp. 9,52%, Serratia spp. 8,33%, Streptococcus iniae 7,14%, Stenotrophomonas spp. 5,95%, Bacillus spp. 4,76% e Salmonella spp. 3,57%. O estudo revelou que as amostras de peixes de Mahseer e carpa prateada coletadas nos mercados encontraram mais isolados (10 espécies bacterianas) do que as amostras de peixes frescos (03 espécies bacterianas) de incubatórios. Abstract Fish is the main source of animal protein for human diet. The aim of this study was to find out prevalence of pathogenic bacteria of two selected economically important fish of Pakistan namely Mahseer (Tor putitora) and Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Live fish samples from hatcheries and dead fish samples from different markets of study area were randomly collected. The fish samples were analyzed for isolation, identification and prevalence of bacteria. The isolated bacteria from study fish were identified through biochemical test and about 10 species of pathogenic bacteria were identified including the pathogenic bacteria to human and fish namely, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus iniae, Serratia spp. Citrobacter spp. Stenotrophomonas spp. Bacillus spp. and Salmonella spp. The bacterial percentage frequency of occurrence in Silver carp and Mahseer fish showed Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21.42%, Staphylococcus epidermidis 17.85%, Escherichia coli 11.90%, Staphylococcus aureus 9.52%, Citrobacter spp. 9.52%, Serratia spp. 8.33%, Streptococcus iniae 7.14%, Stenotrophomonas spp. 5.95%, Bacillus spp. 4.76% and Salmonella spp. 3.57%. The study revealed that Fish samples of Mahseer and Silver carp that were collected from markets have found more isolates (10 bacterial species) than did the fresh fish pond samples (03 bacterial species) of hatcheries. The occurrence of pathogenic bacteria in study fish showed risk factor for public health consumers.


Resumo O peixe é a principal fonte de proteína animal para a alimentação humana. O objetivo deste estudo foi descobrir a prevalência de bactérias patogênicas de dois peixes economicamente importantes selecionados do Paquistão, nomeadamente Mahseer (Tor putitora) e carpa prateada (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Amostras de peixes vivos de incubatórios e amostras de peixes mortos de diferentes mercados da área de estudo foram coletadas aleatoriamente. As amostras de peixes foram analisadas quanto ao isolamento, identificação e prevalência de bactérias. As bactérias isoladas dos peixes do estudo foram identificadas através de testes bioquímicos e cerca de 10 espécies de bactérias patogênicas foram identificadas incluindo as bactérias patogênicas para humanos e peixes, nomeadamente, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus iniae, Serratia spp. Citrobacter spp. Stenotrophomonas spp. Bacillus spp. e Salmonella spp. A porcentagem de freqüência de ocorrência bacteriana em carpa prateada e peixes Mahseer mostrou Pseudomonas aeruginosa 21,42%, Staphylococcus epidermidis 17,85%, Escherichia coli 11,90%, Staphylococcus aureus 9,52%, Citrobacter spp. 9,52%, Serratia spp. 8,33%, Streptococcus iniae 7,14%, Stenotrophomonas spp. 5,95%, Bacillus spp. 4,76% e Salmonella spp. 3,57%. In order to evaluate the benefits as well as the impacts of essential and toxic metals regarding human health, the six common rice grains (katarivhog, bashful, banglamoti, najirshail, branded miniket and loose miniket) were collected from four wholesale markets in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and were analyzed with different atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) techniques. The mean concentrations of the toxic metals Pb, Cd, Cr, and As had 0.299 ± 0.017, 0.157 ± 0.012, 1.33 ± 0.084, and 0.120 ± 0.006 mg/kg, respectively, while those of the essential metals Fe, Cu, Zn, Na, Ca, and Mg had 7.90 ± 0.447, 3.11 ± 0.097, 10.6 ± 0.340, 37.4 ± 0.622, 90.1 ± 7.70, and 115.8 ± 1.61 mg/kg, respectively. Among them, the mean concentrations of toxic metals (Pb, Cd, Cr, and As) exceeded the maximum allowable concentration in rice set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC). Risk assessment of the heavy metals Pb, Cd, Cr, As, Fe, Cu, and Zn showed that their estimated daily intakes were below the daily reference doses for adults. However, Cd and Cr individually were found to have the target hazard quotient value close to 1 (threshold limit), indicating that they alone are capable of potential health hazards from continuous rice consumption, while the hazard index has surpassed three units signifying greater danger associated with the current trend of consumption. A very high chance of developing cancer in the near future is predicted by incremental lifetime carcinogenic risk (ILCR) analysis for continued intake of Cr (ILCR > 1E-03), and a moderate to high risk is predicted for other carcinogenic substances (Pb, Cd, and As) (ILCR in between 1E-03 and 1E-05) with present rice consumption. The contribution of the essential metals to the RNI revealed that Cu from rice contributes more than 100% in most samples, and the overall contribution is in the following order: Cu > Zn > Fe > Mg > Ca > Na. To ensure the safety of staple foods for human health, it ought to be necessary to design a plan to measure the budget of hazardous metals from all sources with proper surveillance by relevant authorities.

Large curved displays inside Virtual Reality environments are becoming popular for visualizing high-resolution content during analytical tasks, gaming or entertainment. Prior research showed that such displays provide a wide field of view and offer users a high level of immersion. However, little is known about users' performance (e.g., pointing speed and accuracy) on them. We explore users' pointing performance on large virtual curved displays. We investigate standard pointing factors (e.g., target width and amplitude) in combination with relevant curve-related factors, namely display curvature and both linear and angular measures. Our results show that the less curved the display, the higher the performance, i.e., faster movement time. This result holds for pointing tasks controlled via their visual properties (linear widths and amplitudes) or their motor properties (angular widths and amplitudes). Additionally, display curvatures significantly affect the error rate for both linear and angular conditions. Furthermore, we observe that curved displays perform better or similar to flat displays based on throughput analysis. Finally, we discuss our results and provide suggestions regarding pointing tasks on large curved displays in VR.

Tannery-effluent is one of the top-ranked hazardous waste which is generally discharged into the river. To study the fluvial response toward the tannery-effluents and to trace anthropogenic foot-prints in the fluvial-system, a suite of systematically collected sediment and water samples were analyzed for radioactive (226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) and non-radioactive elements (Al, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb, Hg, and Pb). Neutron activation analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy were used for elemental analysis, whereas HPGe-gamma-detector was used for measuring the primordial-radionuclides. Ranges of Cr-abundances in sediment and water were 63-4373 µg.g-1 and 15.6-52.2 µg.L-1, respectively which were ∼4-14 times higher than the geological background. Radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17.7-48.5, 36.1-81.6, and 687-1041 Bq.kg-1, respectively which were significantly depleted in effluent discharge point. Hence, primordial-radionuclides were used as natural tracers for tracing anthropogenic foot-prints which were explained in terms of dilution effect, redox environment and differential geo-environmental events/characteristics. From statistical-approaches and geochemical reasoning, elemental sources and responses in fluvial system were explored. Surprisingly, ecological & radiological risks were reduced while sediment quality guideline-based ecotoxicity & water-mediated health risks were increased by the incorporation of tannery effluents. This study describes the sedimentary response toward the received tannery effluents which is particularly explored by the primordial radionuclides.

In this work, the aqueous leaf extracts of three Ophiorrhiza genus species, namely Ophiorrhiza mungos (Om), Ophiorrhiza harrisiana (Oh) and Ophiorrhiza rugosa (Or), have been used as the reducing and capping agents to control the size of AgNPs, Om-AgNPs, Oh-AgNPs and Or-AgNPs, respectively and found to be an effective antimicrobial agent against a wide range of bacteria and fungi. The biosynthesized AgNPs were studied by UV-Visible spectrophotometer, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR). The average particle sizes of Om-AgNPs, Oh-AgNPs and Or-AgNPs were measured as 17 nm, 22 nm and 26 nm, respectively, and observed to be spherical and face-centered cubic crystals. The antibacterial test of synthesized AgNPs was performed against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Vibrio cholerae where the maximum antibacterial activity was observed by reducing the nano-size and increasing the silver content of AgNPs. The antifungal effect of these three types of AgNPs on Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger was also evaluated and their growth with AgNPs concentrations of 450 µg/mL was inhibited up to 80-90% and 55-70%, respectively. The size-control synthesis of AgNPs using the Ophiorrhiza genus species is presented here for the first time where the synthesized AgNPs showed higher stability and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, this study might lead to synthesize AgNPs with different morphologies using plant extracts of the same genus but from different species and provide strong encouragement for future applications in treating infectious diseases.

Of all varieties, Type I Choledochal cyst causing saccular or fusiform dilatation of the extra-hepatic biliary ductal system is the commonest (90.0 - 95.0%). Its presentations vary. To restore the continuity of the extra-hepatic biliary tract after excision of type I Choledochal cyst, surgeons have few alternatives to use, with their advantages and disadvantages. Roux en-Y Hepatico-jejunostomy (RYHJ) has been very popular and long studied standard surgical treatment for type I Choledochal cyst. But now Hepatico-duodenostomy (HD) is also being practiced and studied in different centers all over the world for the treatment of the same disease. For the last five years, we, at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh, have been using Hepatico-duodenostomy as preferred anastomotic option in treating type I Choledochal cyst. Here, we are presenting our experience at BSMMU Hospital, regarding operative events and time requirement of Hepaticoduodenostomy for the treatment of type I Choledochal cyst and, to show whether this procedure can be safely practiced, producing acceptable results. It is a retrospective document study, from January 2013 to December 2017, at BSMMU Hospital, on forty two, MRCP confirmed type I Choledochal cyst patients of pediatric age. Patients' particulars, history, physical examination, investigations (including MRCP confirmation), assessment, surgical plan were collected from relevant medical records and documented in duly coded individual data collection sheet maintaining standard privacy protocol. Information regarding presentations, operative findings and procedural events including per-operative mortality, injury to the vital structures during operation, conversion to RYHJ, operative time (minutes), blood loss and transfusion requirements (ml) of Heaticoduodenostomy for type I Choledochal cyst, were specially searched for. There was no operative mortality. None of these patients required per-operative blood transfusion. Nor there was any inadvertent injury to the adjacent structures. The mean operative time required for Hepaticoduodenostomy was 88 minutes with a range of 75 to 125 minutes. Through this study, at BSMMU Hospital, operative events and time requirement of Hepatico-duodenostomy for treating type I Choledochal cyst, was found to be yielding acceptable results, for safe practice.
