RESUMEN

A recent wave of academic research has highlighted the wide-ranging and negative impacts that stigma against kink has on kinksters. As scholarship continues to explore prejudice and discrimination around kink, this article argues that fresh insight can be found by drawing on adjacent work around other stigmatized sexualities. Over the previous decades, scholars in sexuality studies and queer studies have developed a powerful conceptual framework of "phobias" and "normativities" for thinking about the marginalization of sexual differences. This framework has its origins in the concepts of homophobia, heteronormativity and homonormativity, but its naming conventions and analytical insights have since been extended to address reproduction, romantic love, monogamy, gender identity, etc. This article argues that this conceptual framework should be expanded once again, this time to encompass kink. Building on the nascent use of this conceptual framework within kink scholarship, this article defines and expands on the concepts of kinkphobia and vanilla-normativity, and introduces the new concept of kink-normativity. This article demonstrates how these concepts can help us better talk about and think through the marginalization of kink.

Women have a stronger preference for sexual submission than men do. In the current studies, we investigated gender differences in fantasies about sexual submission. Replicating previous research, in two studies we found that women expressed a stronger affinity for fantasies about sexual submission than men did. However, controlling for age and several sociocultural factors made the relationship between gender and preference for sexual submission non-significant-that is, we could statistically eliminate the gender difference. These analyses suggest the multiple factors that may influence sexual preferences and the multiple ways that gender differences in preference for submissive sexual fantasies can be eliminated by easily assessed demographic and contextual differences in the experiences of women and men.

The aggravated mechanical and structural degradation of layered oxide cathode materials upon high-voltage charging invariably causes fast capacity fading, but the underlying degradation mechanisms remain elusive. Here we report a new type of mechanical degradation through the formation of a kink band in a Mg and Ti co-doped LiCoO2 cathode charged to 4.55 V (vs Li/Li+). The local stress accommodated by the kink band can impede crack propagation, improving the structural integrity in a highly delithiated state. Additionally, machine-learning-aided atomic-resolution imaging reveals that the formation of kink bands is often accompanied by the transformation from the O3 to O1 phase, which is energetically favorable as demonstrated by first-principles calculations. Our results provide new insights into the mechanical degradation mechanism of high-voltage LiCoO2 and the coupling between electrochemically triggered mechanical failures and structural transition, which may provide valuable guidance for enhancing the electrochemical performance of high-voltage layered oxide cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the outcomes of microneurosurgical interventions on V1 segment of the vertebral artery in patients with refractory vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) due to dolicoarteriopathy and external compressions and to assess the secondary benefits of Parkinsonism-like symptoms. METHODS: Retrospective analysis encompassed 101 patients treated for vertebral artery dolicoarteriopathy or compression-related refractory VBI from 2016 to 2023. Of these, 16 patients exhibited drug-resistant Parkinsonism-like symptoms. The diagnostic evaluation included cerebral computed tomography/magnetic resonance angiography or digital subtraction angiography and brain computed tomography or magnetic resonance perfusion studies, corroborated by preoperative and 6- and 12-month postoperative Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part 3 assessments. Data were analyzed through Turkey's "E-nabiz" system, employing Stata16 for statistical scrutiny. RESULTS: A significant reduction in Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale scores was observed (preoperative: 26.75±10.91; 6 months: 23.09±9.24; 12 months: 22.5±8.73; P < 0.001). Postoperative follow-up denoted that 43.7% of patients ceased medication and 50% reduced antiparkinsonian drugs. The microneurosurgical approach resulted in complete remission of VBI-related symptoms in 84.6% of patients, with the rest showing partial or marked improvement. At 6 months postoperation, perfusion studies revealed posterior border zone or cerebellar perfusion enhancements in 81% (13 out of 16) of patients, with full symptom resolution, while the remaining 19% (3 out of 16) showed partial perfusion and clinical improvements, particularly in regions supplied by the posterior cerebellar artery or posterior inferior cerebellar artery. The absence of operative mortality and minimal transient morbidities underscored the procedure's safety. CONCLUSIONS: Microneurosurgery for vertebral artery anomalies in refractory VBI patients, particularly those with concomitant parkinsonian-like syndromes, has demonstrated potential in symptom remission and medication reduction.

Background: Sexuality research on the sexual practices of women who have sex with women (WSW) has thus far mostly centered on risk factors and addressed a limited number of practices, with a focus on oral sex and insertive vaginal sex. Aim: This study arises from the need to fill such a significant gap, which prevents researchers, clinicians, and policy makers from being adequately up-to-date on the sexual habits and tendencies of this population. Methods: A multiple-choice questionnaire was completed by 723 WSW with a mean (SD) age of 29.14 (6.94) years. Outcomes: The survey included closed questions on sexual practices, including genital and oral sex, but also nongenital sexual contact (petting and intercrural sex), anal sex, and kinky practices. Results: The most common sexual practices were self-masturbation (99.03%), oral sex (performed or received, 98.20%), and insertive genital sex (performed or received, 89.07%). Half of our sample had tried kinky practices at least once in a lifetime (51.31%). Respondents tended to experiment sexually more with stable partners rather than with casual ones. Comparisons among practices in the lesbian and bisexual population are presented. Clinical Implications: Providers should be aware that sexual orientations have their own specificities, including sexuality and practices, which should increase their knowledge and comfort in working with sexual minorities. Strengths and Limitations: The novel topic of the study addresses the gap in sexuality research among WSW. Strengths include the sex-positive approach, the inclusion of an array of sexual practices, and the consideration of the specificities of the group. Limitations in the generalization of the results are the cross-sectional design and the explicit topic, which may have kept some persons from responding. Conclusion: We propose the framing of sex as going beyond genital contact, and we invite clinicians and researchers who come into contact with WSW to be aware that sexual orientation can be associated with specificities regarding sexuality and sexual practices.

Background: There is a lack of research on autistic intimacy; however, a small body of research suggests that bondage, discipline, domination, submission, sadism and (sado)masochism (BDSM)/kink may be appealing to autistic people. We aimed at exploring how engagement in BDSM/kink related to autistic identity, using a phenomenological approach. Methods: We recruited six autistic adults through purposive sampling on social media. All participants took part in a one-to-one spoken interview about their engagement in BDSM/kink and how it related to their sense of identity. Results: We used interpretative phenomenological analysis to analyze the data and found three key themes. Theme 1, "Practicing safe 'sex'" highlighted how the clear communication and explicit focus on consent present in BDSM/kink facilitated a feeling of safety. Theme 2, "So many ways to touch and be touched" was focused on the sensory draw of BDSM/kink, and how it provided exciting ways to explore sensory joy (and sometimes revulsion). Theme 3, "Subverting (neuro)normativity" showed how autistic people can find pleasure in intimate practices that transgress normative expectations. Conclusion: Our findings highlighted the importance of exploring the perceptions of autistic adults in relation to their own intimate practices. Autistic intimacy is an emerging area of research, with very little focus on lived experience. Although engagement in BDSM/kink may appear niche, our findings suggest that there are aspects which are inherently appealing to autistic people. These findings can be used to destigmatize both autistic intimacy and engagement in alternative intimate practices more broadly.


Why is this an important issue?: Autistic intimacy is an under-explored area, with very little focus on the lived experiences of autistic adults and their preferences. Bondage, discipline, domination, submission, sadism and (sado)masochism (BDSM) and kink are alternative intimate practices. There are aspects of BDSM/kink that may appeal to autistic people (e.g., sensory experiences such being restrained during intimacy). However, to date, there is very little research to explore this. What was the purpose of this study?: This study aimed at exploring the experiences and motivations of autistic people who engage in BDSM/kink from their own perspectives. What did the researchers do?: We conducted online video interviews with six autistic adults. We purposefully recruited a small number of people, choosing to use a method called "interpretative phenomenological analysis" that emphasizes deep explorations of the experiences of a small number of people. This method is particularly suitable for areas where very little research exists. What were the results of the study?: We found three key themes: Theme 1, "Practicing safe 'sex'" highlighted how the clear communication and explicit focus on consent present in BDSM/kink facilitated a feeling of safety for our participants, who found uncertainty during intimacy stressful. The sense of safety fostered within these interactions also provided the participants with a space to be their authentic selves, and "switch off" from the outside world. Theme 2, "So many ways to touch and be touched" was focused on the sensory lure of BDSM/kink, and how it provided exciting ways to explore sensory joy (and sometimes revulsion) for autistic people. Theme 3, "Subverting (neuro)normativity" showed how autistic people can find pleasure in intimate practices that other people might find unusual. What do these findings add to what was already known?: To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore autistic engagement in BDSM/kink from a first-person perspective. Our findings show that some alternative ways of being intimate might attract autistic people, because they provide stability, pathways for sensory exploration, or because they are fun in ways that other people sometimes find unexpected. What are potential weaknesses in the study?: We only interviewed a small number of people, and most of them shared similar interests within BDSM/kink. In future, it would be good to find out about the interests of a larger number of autistic people. How will these findings help autistic adults now or in the future?: There is very little research exploring autistic intimacy from a validating perspective. Our findings will help to destigmatize autistic intimacy and normalize conversations about things that people might think of as "taboo.".

Graphite IG-110 is a synthetic polycrystalline material used as a neutron moderator in reactors. Graphite is inherently brittle and is known to exhibit a further increase in brittleness due to radiation damage at room temperature. To understand the irradiation effects on pre-existing defects and their overall influence on external load, micropillar compression tests were performed using in situ nanoindentation in the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) for both pristine and ion-irradiated samples. While pristine specimens showed brittle and subsequent catastrophic failure, the 2.8 MeV Au2+ ion (fluence of 4.378 × 1014 cm-2) irradiated specimens sustained extensive plasticity at room temperature without failure. In situ TEM characterization showed nucleation of nanoscale kink band structures at numerous sites, where the localized plasticity appeared to close the defects and cracks while allowing large average strain. We propose that compressive mechanical stress due to dimensional change during ion irradiation transforms buckled basal layers in graphite into kink bands. The externally applied load during the micropillar tests proliferates the nucleation and motion of kink bands to accommodate the large plastic strain. The inherent non-uniformity of graphite microstructure promotes such strain localization, making kink bands the predominant mechanism behind unprecedented toughness in an otherwise brittle material.

Using blood sample data we exploit an arbitrary cut-off of diabetes risk and through a fuzzy regression kink design we estimate the effect of a diabetes diagnosis on own and partner health-related behaviours. Diabetes diagnosis increases the probability of exercising, both for those diagnosed with diabetes and their partner. We also conduct mediation analysis which suggests that joint household participation is the channel behind this effect. Our results have significant implications for the understanding of the channels that induce behavioural change, and household decision making, as well as, for the evaluation of diabetes related policies.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular treatment devices of the femoropopliteal artery have evolved, improving clinical results. However, the effects of dynamic changes in the popliteal artery during knee flexion have not been sufficiently investigated. In this study we performed a 3-dimensional analysis to clarify the dynamic changes in the popliteal artery during knee flexion and their effects on hemodynamics.Methods and Results: To analyze dynamic changes in the popliteal artery in the knee flexion position, a computed tomography protocol was developed in the right-angled and maximum flexion knee positions. Thirty patients with lower extremity artery disease were recruited. V-Modeler software was used for anatomical and hemodynamic analyses. Various types of deformations of the popliteal artery were revealed, including hinge points and accessory flexions. Kinks can occur in the maximum flexion position; however, they rarely occur in the right-angled flexion position. In addition, hemodynamic analysis revealed a tendency for lower minimum wall shear stress and a higher maximum oscillatory shear index at the maximum curvature of the popliteal artery. CONCLUSIONS: Kinks in the maximum flexion position suggested that the outcome of endovascular treatment may change in areas such as Japan, where knee flexion is customary. Hemodynamics at the maximum curvature of the popliteal artery indicated that the luminal condition was unfavorable for endovascular treatment.

Semicrystalline polymers are lightweight, multiphase materials that exhibit attractive shock dissipation characteristics and have potential applications as protective armor for people and equipment. For shocks of 10 GPa or less, we analyzed various mechanisms for the storage and dissipation of shock wave energy in a realistic, united atom (UA) model of semicrystalline polyethylene. Systems characterized by different levels of crystallinity were simulated using equilibrium molecular dynamics with a Hugoniostat to ensure that the resulting states conform to the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions. To determine the role of structural rearrangements, order parameters and configuration time series were collected during the course of the shock simulations. We conclude that the major mechanisms responsible for the storage and dissipation of shock energy in semicrystalline polyethylene are those associated with plastic deformation and melting of the crystalline domain. For this UA model, plastic deformation occurs primarily through fine crystallographic slip and the formation of kink bands, whose long period decreases with increasing shock pressure.

Tailoring heat flow in solids has profound implications for the innovation of functional thermal devices. However, the current methods face technological challenges related to system complexity, material stability, and operating temperature. In this study, we demonstrated efficient heat flow modulation in a single material without a phase transition, using a simple and entirely material-independent strategy, kinked nanostructure patterning, at near-ambient temperature. By carefully controlling the kink arm length and kink angle of the Si nanoribbons, we achieved a thermal conductivity modulation of up to ∼20%. Our theoretical modeling showed that this modulation results from the competing roles of phonon backscattering and open view channels on heat transport. We also build a regime map based on the existence of an open view channel and provide concrete design guidelines for thermal conductivity modulation considering the kink angle and arm length. This study opens up new opportunities for efficient heat flow manipulation through nanostructure patterning.

Owing to the rapidly increasing emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are being explored as next-generation antibiotics. However, AMPs present in nature are highly toxic and exhibit low antibacterial activity. Simple modifications, such as amino acid substitution, can enhance antimicrobial activity and cell selectivity. Herein, we show that HnMc-W, substituted by the Phe1Trp analog of HnMc, a chimeric peptide, resulted in membranolytic antibacterial action and enhanced salt tolerance, whereas HnMc-WP1 with one Ser9Pro substitution resulted in a proline-kink helical structure that increased salt-tolerant antibacterial effects and reduced cytotoxicity. In addition, the HnMc-WP2 peptide, designed with a PXXP motif, had a flexible central hinge in its α-helical structure due to the introduction of two Pro and two Gln (X positions, by deletion of two Gln at positions 16 and 17) residues instead of Ser at position. HnMc-WP2 exhibited excellent antibacterial effects without cytotoxicity in vitro. Moreover, its potent antibacterial activity was demonstrated in a drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa-infected mouse model in vivo. Our findings provide valuable information for the design of peptides with high antibacterial activity and cell selectivity.

Background: Despite its growing prevalence, BDSM practice (bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, and sadomasochism) is still stigmatized, and little is known about the physical marks and injuries that individuals sustain from consensual BDSM-related activities. Aim: In this exploratory study, we examined BDSM sexual experiences and the physical marks and injuries resulting from these experiences in a convenience sample of 513 US adults. Methods: We examined the extent to which individuals at various stages of BDSM exploration engage with different types of BDSM and kink behaviors, along with the frequency with which they communicate about, inflict, and receive physical marks from these activities. Outcomes: Our main outcome measures were intentional and unintentional marks sustained from BDSM-related activities, BDSM experiences, and the use of safe words. Results: Results revealed that BDSM marks and injuries are common and quite varied (from small scratches to very large bruises) and unintentional and intentional marks differ in terms of typical size, place on body, and severity of injury. Additionally, BDSM experience is positively associated with the use of safe words and marking behaviors. Clinical Translation: Disclosure of marks and injuries, intentional and unintentional, may be improved if health care providers are aware of, and make efforts to reduce stigma surrounding, BDSM and rough sex activity. Strengths and Limitations: The findings of this study must be interpreted with acknowledgment of the limitations that it was a survey study with a convenience sample. However, as one of the few studies exploring the marks and injuries sustained from BDSM activities, the exploration of intentional and unintentional marks sustained provides a critical starting point for future examination of BDSM consequences that intersect with health care and the law. Conclusion: Marks and injuries from BDSM-related activities are common, and despite the greater use of safe words, practitioners with more BDSM experience inflict more marks than those with less BDSM experience.

The modified extended tanh technique is used to investigate the conformable time fractional Drinfel'd-Sokolov-Wilson (DSW) equation and integrate some precise and explicit solutions in this survey. The DSW equation was invented in fluid dynamics. The modified extended tanh technique executes to integrate the nonlinear DSW equation for achieve diverse solitonic and traveling wave envelops. Because of this, trigonometric, hyperbolic and rational solutions have been found with a few acceptable parameters. The dynamical behaviors of the obtained solutions in the pattern of the kink, bell, multi-wave, kinky lump, periodic lump, interaction lump, and kink wave types have been illustrated with 3D and density plots for arbitrary chose of the permitted parameters. By characterizing the particular benefits of the exemplified boundaries by the portrayal of sketches and by deciphering the actual events, we have laid out acceptable soliton plans and managed the actual significance of the acquired courses of action. New precise voyaging wave arrangements are unambiguously gained with the aid of symbolic computation using the procedures that have been announced. Therefore, the obtained outcomes expose that the projected schemes are very operative, easier and efficient on realizing natures of waves and also introducing new wave strategies to a diversity of NLEEs that occur within the engineering sector.

In this study, we investigated the creep properties of ZK60 alloy and a ZK60/SiCp composite at 200 °C and 250 °C in the 10-80 MPa stress range after the KOBO extrusion and precipitation hardening process. The true stress exponent was obtained in the range of 1.6-2.3 for both the unreinforced alloy and the composite. The apparent activation energy of the unreinforced alloy was found to be in the range of 80.91-88.09 kJ/mol, and that of the composite was found to be in the range of 47.15-81.60 kJ/mol, and this indicated the grain boundary sliding (GBS) mechanism. An investigation of crept microstructures using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that at 200 °C, the predominant strengthening mechanisms at low stresses were the formation of twin, double twin, and shear bands, and that by increasing the stress, kink bands were activated. At 250 °C, it was found that a slip band was created in the microstructure, and this effectively delayed GBS. The failure surfaces and adjacent regions were examined using SEM, and it was discovered that the primary cause of failure was cavity nucleation around precipitations and reinforcement particles.

INTRODUCTION: The proteins of the Bin/Amphiphysin/Rvs167 (BAR) domain superfamily are believed to induce membrane curvature. PICK1 is a distinctive protein that consists of both a BAR and a PDZ domain, and it has been associated with numerous diseases. It is known to facilitate membrane curvature during receptor-mediated endocytosis. In addition to understanding how the BAR domain facilitates membrane curvature, it's particularly interesting to unravel the hidden links between the structural and mechanical properties of the PICK1 BAR domain. METHODS: This paper employs steered molecular dynamics (SMD) to investigate the mechanical properties associated with structural changes in the PICK1 BAR domains. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that not only do helix kinks assist in generating curvature of BAR domains, but they may also provide the additional flexibility required to initiate the binding between BAR domains and the membrane. CONCLUSION: We have observed a complex interaction network within the BAR monomer and at the binding interface of the two BAR monomers. This network is crucial for maintaining the mechanical properties of the BAR dimer. Owing to this interaction network, the PICK1 BAR dimer exhibits different responses to external forces applied in opposite directions.

Do government subsidies achieve the goals of stimulating firm innovation and macro-regulation? Existing studies have not reached a consistent conclusion. We will study the incentive effect of government subsidies on innovation of biopharmaceutical firms, analyze the optimal interval of government subsidies, and improve the efficiency of government subsidies. Thus, based on kink threshold model using data from Chinese biopharmaceutical listed companies from 2013-2019, this study analyzes the impact of government subsidies on innovation inputs and outputs. Government subsidies can stimulate innovation inputs and outputs of biopharmaceutical firms. Meanwhile, such subsidies have a significant threshold effect on innovation inputs and outputs, and there is an optimal interval effect. Additionally, concerning enterprise ownership, government subsidies have a more significant role in promoting innovation of non-state biopharmaceutical firms. Regarding regional differences, such subsidies have a more significant role in promoting innovation of firms in the less economically developed central and western regions. RESUMEN

Despite lacking a DNA intermediate, orthomyxoviruses complete their replication cycle in the nucleus and generate multiple transcripts by usurping the host splicing machinery. This biology results in dynamic changes of relative viral transcripts over time and dictates the replicative phase of the infection. Here, we demonstrate that the family of archaeal L7Ae proteins uniquely inhibit the splicing biology of influenza A virus, influenza B virus, and Salmon isavirus, revealing a common strategy utilized by Orthomyxoviridae members to achieve this dynamic. L7Ae-mediated inhibition of virus biology was lost with the generation of a splicing-independent strain of influenza A virus and attempts to select for an escape mutant resulted in variants that conformed to host splicing biology at significant cost to their overall fitness. As L7Ae recognizes conventional kink turns in various RNAs, these data implicate the formation of a similar structure as a shared strategy adopted by this virus family to coordinate their replication cycle. IMPORTANCE Here, we demonstrate that a family of proteins from archaea specifically inhibit this splicing biology of all tested members of the Orthomyxoviridae family. We show that this inhibition extends to influenza A virus, influenza B virus, and isavirus genera, while having no significant impact on the mammalian transcriptome or proteome. Attempts to generate an escape mutant against L7Ae-mediated inhibition resulted in mutations surrounding the viral splice sites and a significant loss of viral fitness. Together, these findings reveal a unique biology shared among diverse members of the Orthomyxoviridae family that may serve as a means to generate future universal therapeutics.

OBJECTIVES: The division of inferior pulmonary ligament (IPL) during upper lobectomy (UL) was believed to be mandatory to dilate the remaining lung sufficiently. However, the benefits, especially postoperative pulmonary function, remain controversial. This study aimed to evaluate whether IPL division leads to pulmonary dysfunction. METHODS: This retrospective study included 213 patients who underwent UL between 2005 and 2018. They were categorized into an IPL division group (D group, n = 106) and a preservation group (P group, n = 107). Postoperative dead space at the lung apex, pulmonary function and complications were assessed using chest X-rays and spirometry. Changes in bronchial angle, cross-sectional area and circumference of the narrowed bronchus on the excised side were measured on three-dimensional computed tomography. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the postoperative complication rate, the dead space area, forced vital capacity (FVC), or forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) between the 2 groups after right UL (FVC; P = 0.838, FEV1; P = 0.693). By contrast, after left UL pulmonary function was significantly better in the P than in the D group (FVC; P = 0.038, FEV1; P = 0.027). Changes in bronchial angle did not significantly differ between the 2 groups. The narrowed bronchus's cross-sectional area (P = 0.021) and circumference (P = 0.009) were significantly smaller in the D group than in the P group after left UL. CONCLUSIONS: IPL division during left UL caused postoperative pulmonary dysfunction and airflow limitation due to bronchial kinking. IPL preservation may have a beneficial impact on postoperative pulmonary function.

In this study, we present some design suggestions for all-polymer solar cells by utilizing device simulation. The polymer solar cell under investigation is formed by a photoactive film of a blend comprising PBDB-T as a polymer donor and PZT as a polymerized small molecule acceptor. The initial cell is based on a fabricated cell whose structure is ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PBDB-T:PZT/PFN-Br/Ag, which has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of about 14.9%. A calibration procedure is then performed by comparing the simulation results with experimental data to confirm the simulation models, and the material parameters, implemented in the SCAPS (Solar Cell Capacitance Simulator) simulator. To boost the open circuit voltage, we investigate a group of hole transport layer (HTL) materials. An HTL of CuI or P3HT, that may replace the PEDOT:PSS, results in a PCE of higher than 20%. However, this enhanced efficiency results in a minor S-shape curve in the current density-voltage (J-V) characteristic. So, to suppress the possibility of the appearance of an S-curve, we propose a double HTL structure, for which the simulation shows a higher PCE with a suppressed kink phenomenon due to the proper band alignment. Moreover, the designed cell is investigated when subjected to a low light intensity, and the cell shows a good performance, signifying the cell's suitability for indoor applications. The results of this simulation study can add to the potential development of highly efficient all-polymer solar cells.
