RESUMEN

The longevity of seeds, also known as storability, is the period of time for which a seed lot maintains its viability during storage. The method aims to determine longevity of a seed lot during storage in a controlled environment. Seeds are first rehydrated to a preset water content (or relative humidity, RH) and then incubated under controlled conditions for various periods of time to allow for deterioration to occur. At increasing intervals during storage, seeds are retrieved and viability is tested by scoring germination of the seed lot (i.e., radicle protrusion). From these data, a survival curve can be drawn depicting loss of germination during time of storage from which different parameters estimating longevity can be inferred. These parameters can be used to compare longevity between different seed lots, genotypes, or species at similar storage conditions. This test can also be used as a proxy to measure seed vigor or physiological seed quality.

RESUMEN

We show herein that 1,10-dicyano substitution restricts the paragon fluxionality of bullvalene to just 14 isomers which isomerize along a single cycle. The restricted fluxionality of 1,10-dicyanobullvalene (DCB) is investigated by means of: (i) Bonding analyses of the isomer structures using the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP). (ii) Quantum dynamical simulations of the isomerizations along the cyclic intrinsic reaction coordinate of the potential energy surface (PES). The PES possesses 14 equivalent potential wells supporting 14 isomers which are separated by 14 equivalent potential barriers supporting 14 transition states. Accordingly, at low temperatures, DCB appears as a hindered molecular rotor, without any delocalization of the wavefunction in the 14 potential wells, without any nuclear spin isomers, and with completely negligible tunneling. These results are compared and found to differ from those for molecular boron rotors. (iii) Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations of thermally activated isomerizations. (iv) Calculations of the rate constants in the frame of transition state theory (TST) with reasonable agreement achieved with the BOMD results. (v) Simulations of the equilibration dynamics using rate equations for the isomerizations with TST rate coefficients. Accordingly, in the long-time limit, isomerizations of the 14 isomers, each with Cs symmetry, approach the "14 Cs → C7v" thermally averaged structure. This is a superposition of the 14 equally populated isomer structures with an overall C7v symmetry. By extrapolation, the results for DCB yield working hypotheses for so far un-explored properties e.g. for the equilibration dynamics of C10H10.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between peritoneal membrane permeability and dyspepsia in peritoneal dialysis patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 95 peritoneal dialysis patients aged 18 and older. The presence of dyspepsia in patients was recorded according to the 2016 ROME-IV Functional Dyspepsia Diagnostic Criteria. Subsequently, the Glasgow Dyspepsia Severity Score questionnaire was administered to assess the severity of dyspepsia. Endoscopy was performed for those who agreed to exclude organic pathology, or the results of endoscopy conducted within the last 2 years were recorded. Furthermore, stool samples were examined for H. pylori to exclude organic causes of dyspepsia. PET (peritoneal equilibration test) and Kt/V values of patients were calculated using the "PD Adequest" computer software. PET values were categorized as low and low-normal for low permeability and high and high-normal for high permeability. RESULTS: Dyspepsia was detected in 51.6% of all peritoneal dialysis patients. H. pylori was found positive in 11.6% of all patients and 12.2% of those with dyspeptic symptoms. There was no significant difference in the rate of H. pylori occurrence between low and high permeability groups. The Glasgow Dyspepsia Severity Score did not differ significantly between H. pylori-positive and -negative patients. Dyspepsia was more frequent and severe in the low permeability group. Dyspepsia in the low permeability group was mostly considered as functional dyspepsia due to the predominance of normal endoscopic findings. CONCLUSION: Dyspepsia is a common health problem in approximately half of peritoneal dialysis patients. Dyspepsia observed in those with low peritoneal membrane permeability is generally of functional origin. Furthermore, the frequency and severity of dyspepsia are higher in individuals with low permeability. When planning peritoneal dialysis for these patients, the current status should be taken into consideration, and patients should be informed about necessary precautions and recommendations.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the trueness of the digital maxillary occlusal records in comparison with the conventional records for the fabrication of complete-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled clinical trial followed the recommendations of the CONSORT statement. Twenty participants who used a mandibular interim complete-arch fixed prosthesis and conventional complete maxillary dentures were included in the study. The participants were randomized into two types of maxillary occlusal records: conventional (COR) and digital (DOR) (TRIOS; Shape A/S). After fabricating the prostheses, the distribution and number of occlusal contact points, and the time taken to obtain the maxillary occlusal record and work model were evaluated. Descriptive analysis was used to evaluate the distribution of occlusal contact points. The Wilcoxon test was employed for assessing the number of occlusal contact points, while the Mann-Whitney U test was used for the time taken to obtain the working casts and the maxillary occlusal record and occlusal adjustment times (p < 0.05). RESULTS: There was a similarity in the jaw relation recording methods regarding the distribution of occlusal contact points. There was no difference in the number of occlusal contact points between the anterior (p = 0.439) and posterior (p = 0.227) teeth. No relationship was observed between the distribution and number of occlusal contact points (COR, p = 0.288; DOR, p = 0.183). DOR required less occlusal and clinical adjustment time, on the other hand more laboratory and total workflow time than COR (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The DOR may be an option for obtaining the functional space necessary for the assembly of teeth in complete-arch implant-supported fixed prostheses; however, it requires more working time. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The digital occlusal recording method can be used to assess the interocclusal space for the virtual tooth setup of a complete-arch implant-supported fixed prosthesis.

Hypothesis Conventional solvent exchange formulation methods face limitations when trying to control the final non-equilibrium size properties of block copolymer micelles containing a strongly hydrophobicity and a rigid block because the solvent conditions are not well controlled during micelle formation. Therefore, using an alternative formulation method, named Equilibration-Nanoprecipitation (ENP), in which micelles are formed under uniform solvent conditions, will significantly reduce the final dispersity compared a conventional solvent exchange method. EXPERIMENTAL: Size properties of the final aqueous micelle dispersions formed from the ENP method and a conventional solvent exchange are measured using DLS. Also, a parallel modelling study is completed to predict the final size distributions using both methods. Findings The experimental results demonstrate the ENP method is effective producing non-equilibrium micelles with low dispersity below the monodisperse polydispersity index (PDI) cutoff for DLS while the conventional solvent exchange method leads to significantly greater dispersity. Also the experimental results highlight ENP can be used to tune the final size properties which cannot be done using methods which do not properly control the micelle formation conditions. Additionally, the modelling study supports the utility of the ENP approach for producing monodisperse dispersions of nonequilibrium polymer micelles.

OBJECTIVES: Single denture rehabilitated patients have negative appraisals regarding oral function, mostly associated by stability and retention issues regarding mandibular prosthetics. Therefore, this study assessed patients' occlusal equilibration, muscle activity, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) receiving milled removable or fixed mandibular implant retained prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two edentulous mandibular ridges patients were randomly distributed into two groups based on the definitive prosthesis received. Group I: Removable mandibular implant-supported overdenture, Group II: Implant retained fixed prosthesis. Occlusal equilibration was evaluated utilizing Occlusense, muscle activity via Electromyograph (EMG) at delivery, after one, and three months. The OHRQoL was evaluated by Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-19) before delivery and after follow-ups. Data were collected, tabulated, and analyzed, utilizing independent t-test and One-way ANOVA followed Tukey`s post-hoc test. Significance level set at P ≤ 0.05. RESULTS: Groups I &II showed significant improvement in occlusal equilibration, muscle activity and OHRQoL. Group II demonstrated significantly higher improvement than group I in occlusal equilibration associated with muscle activity after 1 month, and in functional limitations domain in OHRQoL questionnaire after 3 months. CONCLUSION: Implant retained mandibular prosthesis showed improvement in occlusal equilibration, muscle activity, and OHRQoL regardless of prosthesis type employed. Fixed implant-supported prosthesis revealed better outcomes than removable mandibular implant-supported overdenture concerning occlusal equilibration, muscle activity, and OHRQoL regarding functional limitations. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Implant retained mandibular prosthesis is one of best treatment options for single mandibular completely edentulous patients, as dental implants improved occlusal equilibration, muscle activity, and OHRQoL.

BACKGROUND: While assessment of membrane characteristics is fundamental to peritoneal dialysis (PD) prescription in patients initiating therapy, peritoneal equilibration test has theoretical and practical drawbacks. We wished to determine whether an equation using simple clinical variables could predict fast (above population mean) peritoneal solute transfer rate without dialysate sampling. METHODS: We measured peritoneal solute transfer rate, as determined by peritoneal equilibration test using the 4-h dialysate to plasma creatinine ratio, in consecutive PD outpatients attending a single tertiary hospital for their first clinical follow-up within 3 months of dialysis initiation. An equation estimating peritoneal solute transfer rate based on readily available clinical variables was generated in a randomly selected modeling group and tested in a distinct validation group. RESULTS: We included 712 patients, with 562 in the modeling group and 150 in the validation group. Mean age was 58.4 ± 15.9 with 431 (60.5%) men. Mean peritoneal solute transfer rate value was 0.73 ± 0.13. An equation based on gender, race, serum sodium and albumin yielded a receiving operator characteristics (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) to detect fast peritoneal solute transfer rate (> 0.73) of 0.74 (0.67-0.82). Estimated peritoneal solute transfer rate values based on percentiles 15th (> 0.66), 20th (> 0.68), 25th (> 0.69) and 30th (> 0.70) could rule out fast peritoneal solute transfer rate with negative predictive values of 100%, 93.5%, 84.2% and 80.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: An equation based on simple clinical variables allows ruling out fast transport in a significant proportion of patients initiating PD with a high degree of confidence without requiring dialysate sampling. This could prove useful in guiding dialysis prescription of PD patients in daily clinical practice, particularly in low-resource settings.

Plasmonic catalysis has emerged as a promising approach to solar-chemical energy conversion. Notably, hot carriers play a decisive role in plasmonic catalysis since only when their energy matches with the LUMO or HOMO energy of the reactant molecule, can the reaction be activated. However, the hot carrier energy depends on the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the plasmonic metal substrate and the interaction with incident light. Tuning the hot carrier energy is of great significance for plasmonic catalysis but remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that the energy of hot electrons can be significantly elevated to an unprecedented level through the coordination of amines on Ag surface. The bonding of amines and Ag reduces the work function of nanoparticles, leading to the increase of hot electron energy by 0.4 eV. This enhancement of energy promotes the cleavage of C-X (X=Cl, F) bonds upon excitation by visible light. This study provides new insights for promoting plasmonic charge transfer and enhancing the photocatalytic performance of plasmon-mediated systems.

Background: The mean 4-h dialysate to plasma ratio of creatinine (4-h D/Pcr) is a vital cutoff value for recognizing the fast peritoneal solute transfer rate (PSTR) in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD); however, it shows a noticeable centre effect. We aimed to investigate our centre-calculated cutoff value (CCV) of 4-h D/Pcr and compare it with the traditional cutoff value (TCV) (0.65). Methods: In this study, we enrolled incident PD patients at our centre from 2008 to 2019, and divided them into fast or non-fast PSTR groups according to baseline 4-h D/Pcr-based CCV or TCV. We compared the efficiency of the fast PSTR recognized by two cutoff values in predicting mortality, ultrafiltration (UF) insufficiency and technical survival. Results: In total, 1905 patients were enrolled, with a mean 4-h D/Pcr of 0.71 ± 0.11. Compared with TCV (0.65), CCV (0.71) showed superiority in predicting mortality of PD patients [hazard ratio (HR) 1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.59 vs HR 1.24, 95% CI 0.97-1.59]. The odds ratio (OR) of the fast PSTR in centre classification was slightly higher than traditional classification in predicting UF insufficiency (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.25-2.24 vs OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.15-2.22). Additionally, the restricted cubic splines 4-h D/Pcr has an S-shaped association with mortality and UF insufficiency, and the inflection points of 4-h D/Pcr were 0.71 (equal to CCV). Conclusions: The CCV of 4-h D/Pcr for identifying fast PSTR was 0.71. It was superior to TCV in predicting mortality and UF insufficiency.

Vitrification has been widely used for oocyte cryopreservation, but there is still a need for optimization to improve clinical outcomes. In this study, we compared the routine droplet merge protocol with modified multi-gradient equilibration vitrification for cryopreservation of mouse oocytes at metaphase II. Subsequently, the oocytes were thawed and subjected to intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Oocyte survival and spindle status were evaluated by morphology and immunofluorescence staining. Moreover, the fertilization rates and blastocyst development were examined in vitro. The results showed that multi-gradient equilibration vitrification outperformed droplet merge vitrification in terms of oocyte survival, spindle morphology, blastocyst formation, and embryo quality. In contrast, droplet merge vitrification exhibited decreasing survival rates, a reduced proportion of oocytes with normal spindle morphology, and lower blastocyst rates as the number of loaded oocytes increased. Notably, when more than six oocytes were loaded, reduced oocyte survival rates, abnormal oocyte spindle morphology, and poor embryo quality were observed. These findings highlight that the vitrification of mouse metaphase II oocytes by the modified multi-gradient equilibration vitrification has the advantage of maintaining oocyte survival, spindle morphology, and subsequent embryonic development.

Partition coefficients (PCs) are essential parameters for understanding the toxicokinetics of chemicals in the human body since they are used in the description of different processes of absorption, distribution, and excretion in physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models used in chemical exposure and risk assessment. The goal of this study was to determine urine:air, blood:air and plasma:air partition coefficients (PCs) of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) previously selected as having high potential as biomarkers of indoor mold exposure. To achieve this goal, the vial-equilibration technique was used, and quantification was performed using headspace gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS/MS) analysis. Matrix:air PCs of 19 different mVOCs have been successfully determined and their values ranged between 14 and 3586 for urine:air, 78 and 4721 for blood:air and 64 and 5604 for plasma:air PCs. Water:air PCs were also determined, and their values varied between 16 and 2210, showing a good correlation with urine:air PCs for 17 compounds of the selected mVOCs (R2 = 0.97, slope close to unity) indicating that water:air PCs below 103 may be a good surrogate for urine:air PCs. All studied mVOCs have high blood:air PCs (greater than 78) indicating strong pulmonary uptake. Due to their high blood:urine PCs, some mVOCs may be more easily measured in blood than in urine. This work is an important preliminary step toward the use of mVOCs as potential biomarkers of indoor mold exposure. The data obtained in this study will help to determine the most appropriate matrix to use in this biomonitoring approach and will eventually facilitate the development of PBPK models for these chemicals.

This work examines the effect of equilibration time with extender on ultra-rapidly frozen-thawed wild ruminant epididymal (origin: Iberian ibex) and ejaculated (origin: mouflon) sperm variables. Sperm samples were prepared either without prior equilibration, or equilibrated for 30 min before freezing. Higher quality (p < 0.05) frozen-thawed spermatozoa were obtained when equilibration was allowed, for ejaculated sperm in terms of sperm motility, acrosome apical ridge integrity, sperm viability, and percentage of normal cells, and for epididymal sperm in terms of linearity and straightness of sperm movement. The sperm head area, head perimeter, head length and head width were smaller (p < 0.01) in the equilibrated than non-equilibrated frozen-thawed epididymal sperm; no such dimensional changes were recorded for ejaculated sperm. In conclusion, equilibration prior to ultra-rapid freezing improves the cryoresistance of sperm cells, although viable sperm cells can be obtained without equilibration. The epididymal sperm showed greater cryoresistance, supporting the idea that it is more resistant to freeze-thawing than ejaculated sperm.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of androgen receptor (AR) having transrepression effects completes the circle of its functionalities as a typical transcription factor, which intrinsically bears dual functions of activation and repression linked to co-factor competition and redistribution. Indeed, AR dual functions are exemplified by locus-wide regulation of the oncogenic 8q24-MYC region. METHODS: RT-qPCR assay and public RNA-profiling datasets were used to assess MYC transcription in androgen-sensitive cell lines. Public ChIP-seq and RNA-Seq datasets were computed to evaluate AR-MYC direct and indirect signatures. Gene sets in typical MYC and AR pathways were monitored to validate their cross-talks. Bio-informatics and chromosome conformation capture (3C) assay were performed in the AR gene locus to examine androgen-elicited distal regulation. Finally, co-factor re-distribution were globally tracked between AR and MYC binding sites. RESULTS: In this report, we found MYC responded negatively to androgen with hypersensitivity, rivaling AR natural functions as an innate androgen effector. Furthermore, both direct and indirect AR and MYC transcriptional programs were actively in equilibration. With established androgen-mediated versus MYC-mediated gene subsets, we validated AR and MYC pathways were both bidirectional and extensively entangled. In addition, we determined that the AR gene locus resembled the MYC gene region and both loci were androgen-repressed via epigenetics and chromatin architectural alterations. Significantly, transcriptional factor profiling along the prostate cancer (PCa) genome exposed that PCa transcriptomes were dynamically equilibrated between AR-binding site and MYC-binding site. CONCLUSION: Together, our findings stratified AR-MYC interactions that are extensively wired and intricately organized to compensate for essential PCa transcriptional programs and neutralize excessive signaling.

Equilibration with an extender is necessary to allow cryopreservation of bovine sperm. The aim of trial 1 was to assess the effect of 24 h versus 4 h equilibration time with three different extenders on sperm quality and to select the preferred extender for each bull. The aim of trial 2 was to investigate the effect of using a 24 h equilibration time with a bull-specific extender on field fertility. For trial 1, three ejaculates each from eight Holstein Friesian breeding bulls were used as the split-sample, including two equilibration times (4 h and 24 h) and three extenders (BioXcell, Triladyl, and OptiXcell). For trial 2, from 5 to 10 ejaculates from the same bulls were collected and treated (split-sample) as BioXcell with 4 h equilibration and either Triladyl or OptiXcell, both with 24 h equilibration. A total of 11,059 straws were used for insemination of cows and heifers. For Triladyl, progressive sperm motility, acrosome defects, and plasma membrane and acrosome integrity improved with a 24 h compared to a 4 h equilibration time. Four bulls each were used with Triladyl and OptiXcell for trial 2. In trial 2, non-return rates did not differ among groups. Therefore, using a 24 h equilibration time might improve in vitro sperm parameters, depending on the extender used. Moreover, it would be possible to change from 4 h to 24 h equilibration time without impairing field fertility.

BACKGROUND: Categorization of the capacity of ultrafiltration during a peritoneal equilibration test (PET) is a usual step during the monitoring of peritoneal transport characteristics of Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) patients. Quantifying the peritoneal residual volume (Vr) after the dwell preceding the PET (Vrpre) and at the end of the test (Vrpost) could help to improve the accuracy of the estimation of this variable. METHOD: Following a prospective design, we calculated Vrpre and Vrpost in 116 patients, incident or prevalent on DP, who underwent one or two (n = 27) PET with 3,86/4,25% glucose-based PD solutions and complete drainage at 60 min. We evaluated the consistency of Vr by comparing Vrpre and Vrpost, as also these two parameters in repeated tests. We scrutinized potential associations between demographic and clinical factors, on one side, and the amount of Vr on the other, as also the impact of correcting ultrafiltration during PET for Vr on the categorization of the capacity of ultrafiltration. RESULTS: As a mean, Vrpost was larger than Vrpre. Consequently, correction of ultrafiltration for Vr resulted in significantly higher values than those obtained according to the standard procedure (494 vs. 449 mL, p < 0,0005). We disclosed marked inconsistencies for different estimations of Vr in the same patients (Vrpre vs Vrpost and repeated PET studies). Moreover, no demographic or clinical variable was able to predict the amount of Vr. We observed a significant deviation (>200 mL) between both methods of estimation of the capacity of utrafiltration in only 12,9% of the patients. However, 21,1% of the patients categorized as cases of ultrafiltration failure according to the standard procedure did not maintain this condition after correction for Vr. CONCLUSIONS: Correction for Vr of the capacity of ultrafiltration during a PET carries, as a mean, a minor impact on the categorization of this parameter. However, the results of the test can be significantly affected in 12,9% of the cases. We have been unable to detect demographic or clinical predictors of Vr, which suggests a random component for the mechanics of single peritoneal exchanges. We suggest that Vr should be estimated at the time of categorizing the capacity of ultrafiltration, whenever inconsistencies during serial PET studies are detected.

A theoretical model that can efficiently calculate the refractive index response of semiconductors under ultrafast X-ray radiation is established based on the photorefractive effect of semiconductors. The proposed model is used to interpret X-ray diagnostics experiments, and the results are in good agreement with experiments. In the proposed model, a rate equation model of free carrier density calculation is adopted with the X-ray absorption cross-sections calculated by atomic codes. The two-temperature model is used to describe the electron-lattice equilibration and the extended Drude model is applied to calculate the transient refractive index change. It is found that faster time response can be achieved for semiconductors with shorter carrier lifetime and sub-picosecond resolution can be obtained for InP and [Formula: see text]. The material response time is not sensitive to X-ray energy and the diagnostics can be used in the 1-10 keV energy range. Objectives. The results are reported here of the 8th National Census (Cs-22) of Peritoneal Dialysis in Italy, carried out in 2022-23 by the Italian Society of Nephrology's Peritoneal Dialysis Project Group and relating to 2022. Methods. The Census was conducted in the 227 non pediatric centers which performed Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) in 2022. The results have been compared with the previous Censuses carried out since 2005. Results. Incidence: in 2022, 1350 patients (CAPD=52.1%) started on PD (1st treatment for ESRD). PD was started incrementally by 35.3% in 136 Centers. The catheter was placed exclusively by a Nephrologist in 17.0% of known cases. Prevalence: there were 4152 (CAPD=43.4%) patients on PD on 31/12/2022, with 21.1% of prevalent patients on assisted PD (family member caregiver: 86.3%). Out: in 2022 the PD drop-out rate (ep/100 pt-yrs) was: 11.7 to HD; 10.1 death, down; 7.5 Tx. The main cause of transfer to HD remains peritonitis (23.5%), although its reduction over the years is confirmed (Cs-05: 37.9%). Peritonitis/EPS: the incidence of peritonitis in 2022 was 0.176 ep/pt-yr (696 episodes). The incidence of new cases of EPS fell in 2021-22 (7 cases). Other results: the number of Centers using 3.86% for the peritoneal equilibration test (PET) (57.7%) increased. PD for heart failure continues to be used in 44 Centers (66 pts). Conclusions. Cs-22 confirms PD's good results in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence regarding the etiology or effective treatments for chronic orofacial pain, the majority diagnosed as temporomandibular disorder (TMD), is limited. PURPOSE: To investigate whether occlusal equilibration therapy (ET) and decreasing the (higher) angle of the lateral guidance on the nonworking-side leads to a reduction in chronic TMDs intensity. METHODS: It was conducted a randomized, explanatory, single blind with blinded assessment, placebo-controlled trial with strong protection against bias involving patients with chronic TMDs. Participants were randomly assigned to receive equilibration therapy or sham therapy. ET in this study consisted of minimal invasive occlusal remodeling to obtain balanced occlusion with reduction of the steeper angle of lateral mandibular movement with respect to the Frankfort plane. The primary outcome was a change in the pain intensity score (on a 0-10 point scale, with 0 indicating no pain and 10 the worst possible pain) at month 6. Secondary outcomes include maximum unassisted mouth opening and psychological distress. RESULTS: A total of 77 participants underwent randomization, 39 of whom received ET and 38 sham therapy. The trial was stopped early for efficacy, according to preestablished rules when 67 participants (n = 34, n = 33, respectively) had completed the analysis. At month 6, the mean unadjusted pain intensity score was 2.1 in the ET and 3.6 in the sham therapy group (adjusted mean difference, -1.54; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.5 to -2.6; P = 0.004; ANCOVA model). The mean increase in maximum unassisted mouth opening (main secondary outcome) was significantly higher in the real therapy group (adjusted mean difference 3.1 mm, 95% CI 0.5-5.7, p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: ET significantly reduced the intensity of facial pain associated with chronic TMDs and increased maximum unassisted mouth opening, as compared with sham therapy, over the course of 6 months. There were no serious adverse events. INTRODUCTION: Growth retardation is a common problem in pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease. It is unknown if the growth of children on peritoneal dialysis (PD) can be augmented by more dialysis. METHODS: We studied the effect of various peritoneal adequacy parameters on delta height standard deviation scores (SDSs) and growth velocity z-scores in 53 children (27 males) on PD, who underwent 2 longitudinal adequacy tests at 9-month intervals. None of the patients were on growth hormone. Intraperitoneal pressure and standard KDOQI guidelines were compared to the outcome measures delta height SDS and height velocity z-scores, using univariate and multivariate tests. RESULTS: At the time of the second PD adequacy test, their mean age was 9.2 ± 5.3 years; mean fill volume was 961 ± 254 mL/m2; and median total infused dialysate volume was 5.26 L/m2/day (range 2.03-15.32 L). The median total weekly Kt/V was 3.79 (range 0.9-9.5), and the median total creatinine clearance was 56.6 (range 7.6-133.48) L/week, higher than previous pediatric studies. The delta height SDS was a median of -0.12 (range -2 to +3.95)/year. The mean height velocity z-score was -1.6 ± 4.0. The only relationships discovered were between the delta height SDS and age, bicarbonate, and intraperitoneal pressure, but not for Kt/V or creatinine clearance. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of normalization of bicarbonate concentrations to improve height z-score.

Blood transfusion is an important treatment modality for severe anaemia. Monitoring post-transfusion haemoglobin (Hb) concentration helps the clinician in assessing the success of blood transfusion. Previous authors have reported different timings for post-transfusion equilibration using varied time intervals for post-transfusion Hb concentration assessment. This study was therefore aimed at determining the appropriate time to assess Hb concentration after packed red blood cell (pRBC) transfusion in children using 5 different time intervals. It was a longitudinal observational study carried out in a tertiary care hospital in Southeast, Nigeria and involved 108 children aged 1-10 years without active bleeding or significant haemolysis that were transfused with pRBC. The Hb concentration was measured using a portable haemoglobinometer just before the blood transfusion and after the blood transfusion at 1, 6, 12, 24, and 48th-hour. The 1-hour (6.8 ± 1.5 g/dl) post-transfusion Hb concentration was significantly different (p 0.001) from the 6th-hour (10.2 ± 1.5 g/dl), but no further significant (p > 0.05) changes occurred after the 6th-hour till the 48th-hour. This finding suggests that equilibration of Hb concentration had occurred by the 6th hour after blood transfusion. This study, therefore, recommends that Hb concentration assessment in children without ongoing bleeding or haemolysis can be done at the 6th hour after pRBC transfusion.
