RESUMEN

The shock of reality that nursing students face when they start out will affect the nursing profession even more in the future, as it faces a recruitment crisis in the midst of renewal. Restoring meaning to the nursing profession is a complex and daunting challenge. By providing access to scientific literature, the bibliography group can contribute to this, based on an Evidence-Based Nursing approach. This initiative, which is beneficial for professionals whose skills development is thus encouraged, is designed to be simple and accessible to as many people as possible.

RESUMEN

Students that graduate with degrees in science may pursue a variety of career roles. Many of these roles may require them to read primary scientific literature (PSL) or even write up their own manuscripts for submission. While literature has recognized the importance of integrating PSL into undergraduate curriculum, it is also important for students to recognize the writing process that one may need to take part in if they seek to disseminate their own publications. This article will go through a research assignment that was given to an introductory journal club class for biology majors at a large R1 Hispanic-serving Institution. This assignment was designed to mirror the publication process at many journals including drafting a manuscript, integrating editor recommendations, and drafting a letter to the editor. In the end, students produce a review paper while becoming more familiar with the traditional publication process. In turn, this can prepare them to eventually seek to publish their own manuscripts.

Background There are a relatively limited number of emergency medicine (EM) medical education (MedEd) fellowships with few trainees at each program, creating barriers to local collaboration and networking. While best practices for developing MedEd journal clubs exist, there has not been an established national EM MedEd journal club. To address this need, we created a national journal club, the Council of Residency Directors (CORD) MedEd Journal Club (MEJC), to facilitate collaboration and networking opportunities by providing a synchronous online journal club. Objectives Our primary objective was to create a network for collaboration across geographical barriers to form a virtual community of practice (CoP) around the shared domain of evidence-based MedEd. Our secondary objective was to improve MedEd fellows' knowledge, skills, and attitudes surrounding MedEd research. Tertiary objectives included (1) broadening fellow exposure to key topics within MedEd, (2) describing how to develop scholarly work within MedEd, and (3) filling a perceived need for building a national MedEd virtual CoP. Curricular design The concept and objectives of the CORD MEJC were introduced to fellows and fellowship directors through a national listserv in March of 2022. Fellows volunteered to lead virtual sessions via Zoom on a monthly basis. Session fellow leaders independently chose the topics and were asked to submit two to three journal club articles discussing the topic at least two weeks in advance of each session. No topics were repeated throughout the academic year.  Impact/effectiveness Our quality improvement survey results indicated that the CORD MEJC is meeting its primary and secondary objectives. Survey results will be utilized as part of a continuous quality improvement initiative to enhance our program structure and curricula for the 2023-2024 academic year.

RESUMEN

A well-conducted prospective cohort study has the potential to change the way in which surgeons practice. However, not all are equal. In this article, we provide many of the tools needed to critically appraise this powerful study design. We advocate for using a 3-step approach that centers on understanding the study's generalizability, results, and validity. We illustrate how this process is applied into practice regularly at our hospital section's journal club sessions.

INTRODUCTION: Journal clubs (JC) have emerged as a popular tool within medical and health professions to deliver outcomes such as promotion of evidence-based practice (EBP), improvement of critical appraisal skills, as well as stimulation of research interest among participating professionals. However, the delivery of these outcomes within the diagnostic radiography profession has not been evidenced and this is the aim of this service evaluation. METHODS: This evaluation adopted a pre- and post-evaluation survey design to explore the impact of a novel JC introduced among diagnostic radiographers in a UK NHS Trust. Impact was assessed based on four pre-determined outcomes such as Knowledge of EBP, Attitude to EBP, Critical Appraisal Skill and Research interest. Open ended questions in the post evaluation survey were also used to obtain participants feedback on JC activities attended. RESULTS: Evaluation of the four pre-determined outcomes indicated that JC activities participated by diagnostic radiographers resulted in positive changes across all evaluated categories. Attitude to EBP was the only outcome to show a statistically significant positive change across all participants, highlighting that the JC affected EBP attitudes positively for those that attended. Furthermore, thematic analysis of open-ended questions indicated that the collaboration experienced among JC members during critical appraisal of articles was a motivation for continued participation while factors such as high clinical workload and absence of management in meetings were identified as mitigating barriers. CONCLUSION: Participation in the JC showed positive improvements in all pre-determined categories. The collaborative nature of JC was motivating for staff, however barriers such as management absence in meetings, and high clinical workload did cause some challenges. Research is recommended to look at the longer-term impact of JC activities amongst diagnostic radiographers.

One of the most significant extracurricular activities throughout the medical students' college years is journal club. It aids in the development of several abilities in students, including reasoning skills, searching ability, and social skills like giving and taking criticism. Our study's objective is to comprehend how students felt about the installation of journal clubs. This research was carried out at Alfaisal University College of Medicine, a private institution of higher learning in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Twenty-two undergraduate medical students were interviewed as part of our qualitative, interview-based approach to data collection. We made an effort to obtain a deeper understanding of how they perceived the various facets of the journal club, including the difficulties they encountered, the advantages of participating and presenting, as well as their interaction with their team and mentors. Four primary themes emerged from our thematic data analysis: (i) interaction between participants and their mentors, (ii) challenges that the participants faced during their preparation and presentation, (iii) advantages participants gained from their experience in the journal club, and (iv) participants' experience with communication and teamwork. The findings of this study indicate that students gain many advantages from their participation; however, they still face some challenges, which provide a platform for improving journal clubs for a more beneficial experience for the students. A more targeted mentoring and improved journal club scheduling that takes into consideration the students' schedules may help students have a more positive journal club experience.

Introduction: The journal club is widely used in most postgraduate programs of medical institutes; however, the use of journal clubs in undergraduate medical programs is nearly absent or very rare. Aim: The aim of this work is to document the insertion of the journal club as a method for learning in the undergraduate starting with the endocrinology/endocrine surgery module to be fully implemented in all modules of the MBBS of FMBU. In addition, the study aimed to outline the steps of designing a journal club by following specific procedures and Identification of students' and faculty satisfaction through 5-years implementation of the journal club. Material and Methods: A total of 453 students representing the five consecutive batches of medical students from 2019 to 2023 who studied the endocrinology/endocrine surgery module were entered into the study. Following guidelines for implementation of the journal clubs that were adopted by the quality and accreditation committee, the faculty select the types of papers from the articles chosen by students. The papers discussed were case reports, original research, and review articles. The students were asked to formulate critical appraisal topics, PICO, for each paper. A 20-question test was applied to all participants. The students' attendance, scores, and students/faculty satisfaction were estimated. Results: A total of 50 papers were discussed in the 5-year journal club 15 case reports (30%), 26 original research (52%), and 9 review articles (18%). The student's attendance ranged from 72.53±3.74 to 98.07±3.15. The students and faculty's satisfaction were 3.52 and 3.82 respectively. The mean Students' score in A 20-question test in a 5-year journal club was 76.93 ± 9.78 and the lowest score was in the 2nd batch (online batch). Conclusion: The insertion of a well-structured journal club in the undergraduate medical program is necessary to improve the knowledge including knowledge among students. In addition, journal clubs inspire students to be lifelong learners.

BACKGROUND: The use of novel rapid-acting antidepressants for psychiatric disorders is expanding. The web-based Ketamine and Related Compounds International Journal Club (KIJC) was created during the COVID-19 pandemic by UK academic psychiatrists and trainees for interested global professionals to discuss papers related to the topic of ketamine for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. The KIJC aimed to facilitate bidirectional discussions, sharing of ideas, and networking among participants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is a preliminary evaluation of the journal club's format for satisfaction and impact after the first year of running. METHODS: A website, email, and word of mouth were used for recruitment. The journal club was held twice per month using videoconferencing software in 3 parts: a 20-minute presentation, a 15-minute chaired question and answer session, and a 25-minute informal discussion with participants' cameras on. The first 2 parts were recorded and uploaded to the website alongside links to the corresponding papers. In total, 24 speakers presented from 8 countries, typically within 2 (SD 2) months of publication. The average attendance was 51 (SD 20) audience members, and there were 63 (SD 50) views of each subsequent recording. Two anonymous web-based cross-sectional surveys were conducted from November 2021 to February 2022, one for speakers and another for audience members, separately. Various survey statements, 14 for speakers and 12 for the audience, were categorized according to satisfaction and impact, alongside obtaining participants' primary career roles and requesting optional written feedback. Responses were compared between both groups and analyzed, including an inductive thematic analysis and a summary of lessons learned. RESULTS: A total of 30 survey responses were obtained, demonstrating overall agreement with the statements. In total, 12 (50%) out of 24 speakers and 18 (35%) out of an average of 51 (SD 20) audience members regarded the journal club's format as satisfying and impactful. The majority (26/30, 87%) of respondents identified as clinicians (9/30, 30%), researchers (9/30, 30%), and clinician-researchers (8/30, 27%). Additionally, 11 (37%) of the 30 respondents also provided optional written feedback: 3 (10%) speakers and 8 (27%) audience members. From the written feedback, 5 main themes were derived: engagement with the journal club, desire for active participation, improving the platform, positive learning experiences, and suggestions for future sessions. CONCLUSIONS: The journal club successfully reached its intended audience and developed into a web-based community. The majority of the participants were satisfied with the format and found it impactful. Overall, the journal club appears to be a valuable tool for knowledge sharing and community building in the field of ketamine use for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. A larger sample size and additional testing methods are required to support the generalizability of the journal club's format.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional journal clubs have been shown to be insufficient in improving residents' scholarly productivity, often due to the inability to sustain residents' interest and participation. Additionally, the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic restrictions caused a decline in academic scholarly productivity across residency programs. We evaluated the impact of a resident-led research club called 'journal café' on residents' scholarly productivity by comparing scholarly output between the journal café members and non-members during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The journal café was established in the 2012/2013 academic year by internal medicine residents of a university residency program in Atlanta, Georgia, to foster self-directed collaboration among residents based on shared interests in academic research. The journal café runs independently of the residency program's journal club. We categorized IM residents at our institution into journal café members and non-members and collected data on their research productivity during residency training and the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey was conducted between April and June 2021 and analyzed data presented using frequencies, tables, and appropriate charts. RESULTS: Sixty-eight residents (29 journal café members and 39 non-members) completed the survey (response rate of 85%). A significantly higher number of journal café members reported having five or more research publications (55.1% vs 7.1%, P < .001) and scientific presentations (48.3% vs 2.6%, P < .001) compared with non-members. Additionally, more journal café members published COVID-19-related research in peer-reviewed journals compared with non-members (68% vs 32%, n = 19). Finally, most of the residents cited the opportunity of a platform to share and brainstorm on research ideas as the reason for joining the journal café. CONCLUSION: We found an association between journal café participation and increased scholarly activity, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Independent resident-led research clubs supported by the residency program may complement the traditional journal clubs and enhance residents' participation in research.

Topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are an integral component of post-graduate medical education. However, it is currently unclear the extent to which physical medicine and rehabilitation residency programs have incorporated a DEI curriculum into their training programs. Here, a novel, multi-institutional DEI journal club is described. This journal club format can be an important component of the DEI curriculum as it provides non-local perspectives and insights into specific issues and allows for a simple way to introduce DEI training in programs currently without such training. The virtual format also provides further opportunities for discussion and networking.

RESUMEN

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine began the Medical Physics Leadership Academy Journal Club in the fall of 2020. The initiative was launched to provide a forum for medical physicists to learn about leadership topics using published material, discuss and reflect on the material, and consider incorporating the discussed skills into their professional practice. This report presents the framework for the MPLA Journal Club program, describes the lessons learned over the last 2 years, summarizes the data collected from attendees, and highlights the roadmap for the program moving forward.

PURPOSE: Journal clubs hold significant importance in medical education, with numerous studies highlighting their contributions worldwide. However, studies specifically examining their role in China, particularly among Chinese medical postgraduates categorized into academic and clinical types, remain scarce. This research aims to investigate the participation, performance, and benefits of journal clubs, and explore the influence of student type and study phase on these aspects. METHOD: A survey encompassing demographic information, participation rates, performance evaluations, and perceived improvements was distributed to postgraduates at Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology. A total of 232 completed questionnaires were included for further analysis. Statistical analysis employed the Mann-Whitney U test and Gamma tests, with statistical significance set at p-value < 0.05. RESULTS: Overall participation and performance in journal clubs among Chinese medical postgraduates were comparable to global findings. Notably, academic postgraduates exhibited higher levels of attendance rate and gained more research assistance than clinical postgraduates, while their performance levels were similar. When considering the study phase, a downward trend in academic postgraduates' attendance rate and listening attitude and an upward trend in clinical postgraduates' participation were observed with the seniority phase. Additionally, presentation comments, post-presentation progress, and research assistance showed improvements over time for both student types. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals academic postgraduates' fatigue, contrasting with clinical postgraduates' enthusiasm, and underscores academic postgraduates' superior research assistance. To address these findings, we recommend supporting and encouraging scientific research training for clinical postgraduates, aiding academic postgraduates in better time management and reducing non-essential responsibilities, and implementing critical appraisal skill education.

BACKGROUND: The Journal Club is an excellent platform for participants to engage in the critical evaluation of articles and the extraction of evidence to support evidence-based nursing practices. The study aims to develop and validate a reliable instrument, the Nursing Journal club perception scale (NJCPS), for assessing the perceived educational value and the perception of virtual journal club experiences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study is a scale development and validation study. The scale-level content validity indices (S-CVI) and item-level content validity indices (I-CVI) were assessed by eight experts. Eleven experts from various nursing fields evaluated the instrument regarding its relevance, clarity, meaningfulness, and completeness. Finally, the scale was introduced to 90 clinical nurses from two facilities to assess the internal consistency during the period of March- April 2022. RESULTS: The content validity of the scale S-CVI/average and S-CVI/UA was 0.97 and 0.86, respectively, which indicates adequate relevance of the questionnaire content. Principal component analysis indicated that the construct validity of the perceived educational value and the perception of the virtual journal club domain was 67.8% and 66.5%, respectively. In the two domains of the perception of educational value (supporting clinical practice and supporting research), Cronbach's Alpha was 0.93 and 0.91, respectively. Similarly, for the two domains of virtual JC (learning experience and benefits of virtual journal club)), Cronbach' Alpha was 0.95 and 0.74, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The NJCPS tool is a valid and reliable scale to measure the educational value and virtual journal club experience of the participants from various fields of healthcare.

Communicating science effectively is an essential part of the development of science literacy. Research has shown that introducing primary scientific literature through journal clubs can improve student learning outcomes, including increased scientific knowledge. However, without scaffolding, students can miss more complex aspects of science literacy, including how to analyze and present scientific data. In this study, we apply a modified CREATE(S) process (Concept map the introduction, Read methods and results, Elucidate hypotheses, Analyze data, Think of the next Experiment, and Synthesis map) to improve students' science literacy skills, specifically their understanding of the process of science and their ability to use narrative synthesis to communicate science. We tested this hypothesis using a retrospective quasi-experimental study design in upper-division undergraduate courses. We compared learning outcomes for CREATES intervention students to those for students who took the same courses before CREATES was introduced. Rubric-guided, direct evidence assessments were used to measure student gains in learning outcomes. Analyses revealed that CREATES intervention students versus the comparison group demonstrated improved ability to interpret and communicate primary literature, especially in the methods, hypotheses, and narrative synthesis learning outcome categories. Through a mixed-methods analysis of a reflection assignment completed by the CREATES intervention group, students reported the synthesis map as the most frequently used step in the process and highly valuable to their learning. Taken together, the study demonstrates how this modified CREATES process can foster scientific literacy development and how it could be applied in science, technology, engineering, and math journal clubs.

A journal club program was initiated in a clinically focused, geographically distributed medical physics therapy residency program. This program currently supports two residents at different clinical sites, who regularly present at the new journal club. For one of the sessions, residents were assigned to present on topics related to the broad themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the context of medical physics, radiation oncology, or medical oncology. As in other journal club sessions, residents were responsible for choosing their respective articles within required criteria and with approval from the program director. The session was executed in late 2022, with both residents leading and facilitating discussion for the residents, the residency program director, and all residency faculty members. This education case report will include the learning objectives for the journal club session, a description of the content covered in the session, discussion regarding the session's alignment with the original learning objectives, and ideas for program directors intending to include evidence-based EDI topics in journal clubs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the importance of scientifically rigorous journal clubs in psychiatric education, and to provide a framework to effectively run journal clubs and appraise articles in a journal club format. This paper explores the concept of journal clubs and describes issues with the current state of academic science. It then lists factors associated with effectiveness of journal clubs and outlines a structure for appraising articles relevant to psychiatric practice in a journal club format. CONCLUSIONS: Current models of academic research and publishing, which can reward practices vulnerable to multiple forms of bias, make the consistent and valued use of journal clubs in psychiatric education and continuing professional development more important than ever. The literature shows that journal clubs can provide a valuable forum for mental health clinicians to update themselves on recent medical and scientific knowledge, while practicing and teaching skills in critical appraisal of research, statistics, clinical decision-making and epidemiology.
