RESUMO

Preventing emission of pollutants in any kind, is a way to protect global environment. The objective of this study is to develop cobalt catalysts supported on alumina for the conversion of the toxic gas SO2 into elemental sulfur using methane. Although several useful catalysts have been proposed, there is still a need to synthesize a catalyst with a high sulfur yield that is also persistent during on-stream stability. To this end, four different catalysts were prepared using the wet impregnation technique, with Co3O4 content ranging from 0 to 15 wt%. Catalytic activity tests were carried out at atmospheric pressure and temperatures ranging from 550 to 800 °C. The Al2O3-Co (15 %) catalyst exhibited superior performance, with a sulfur yield of 98.1 % at 750 °C. The catalytic stability of the best catalyst was examined using a 20 h on-stream stability test under the optimized conditions including an SO2/CH4 molar feed ratio of 2 at 750 °C. The structural changes of the used catalyst after the stability test were investigated using XRD and TPO analyses. It was revealed that sulfidation of Co3O4 after a short while, results in decreasing the sulfur yield from 98.1 % to 89.8 %.

RESUMO

The performance of synthesized cast and electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/zinc oxide/aminopropyltriethoxylsilane (PVA/chitosan/ZnO-APTES) nano-adsorbents were compared in removal of Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions from wastewater. The adsorbents were characterized by SEM, BET, FTIR and TGA analyses. Furthermore, the swelling investigations were carried out to study the adsorbent stability in aqueous solution. The effect of several parameters such as contents of ZnO-NH2, contact time, initial Cd(II) and Ni(II) concentration and temperature on the adsorption capacity was investigated in a batch mode. In comparison with cast adsorbent, nanofiber adsorbent indicated the better adsorption performance. The experimental data well fitted the double-exponential kinetic model. In single metal ion system, the maximum adsorption capacity of nanofiber for Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions is estimated to be 1.239 and 0.851 mmol/g, respectively, much higher than qm of cast adsorbent for Cd(II) (0.625 mmol/g) and Ni(II) (0.474 mmol/g) ions. Thermodynamic parameters were investigated to identify the nature of adsorption process. In binary system of Cd(II)-Ni(II) ions, the inhibitory effect of competitive Cd(II) ion on the Ni(II) adsorption was greater than the inhibitory effect of competitive on the Cd(II) adsorption. The selectivity adsorption of both nanofiber and cast adsorbents was in order of Cd(II) > Ni(II).

RESUMO

The adsorption equilibria of toluene from aqueous solutions on natural and modified diatomite were examined at different operation parameters such as pH, contact time, initial toluene concentration was evaluated and optimum experimental conditions were identified. The surface area and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized by SEM, BET, XRD, FTIR and EDX analysis. It was found that in order to obtain the highest possible removal of toluene, the experiments can be carried out at pH 6, temperature 25°C, an agitation speed of 200 rpm, an initial toluene concentration of 150 mg/L, a centrifugal rate of 4000 rpm, adsorbent dosage = 0.1 g and a process time of 90 min. The results of this work show that the maximum percentage removal of toluene from aqueous solution in the optimum conditions for NONMD was 96.91% (145.36 mg/g). Furthermore, under same conditions, the maximum adsorption of natural diatomite was 71.45% (107.18 mg/g). Both adsorption kinetic and isotherm experiments were carried out. The experimental data showed that the adsorption follows the Langmuir model and Freundlich model on natural and modified diatomite respectively. The kinetics results were found to conform well to pseudo-second order kinetics model with good correlation. Thus, this study demonstrated that the modified diatomite could be used as potential adsorbent for removal of toluene from aqueous solution.
