RESUMO

The present investigation entails the first report on entrapment of Carum carvi essential oil (CCEO) into chitosan polymer matrix for protection of stored herbal raw materials against fungal inhabitation and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) production. Physico-chemical characterization of nanoencapsulated CCEO was performed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy. The nanoencapsulated CCEO displayed improved antifungal and AFB1 suppressing potentiality along with controlled delivery over unencapsulated CCEO. The encapsulated CCEO nanoemulsion obstructed the ergosterol production and escalated the efflux of cellular ions, thereby suggesting plasma membrane as prime target of antifungal action in Aspergillus flavus cells. The impairment in methyglyoxal production and modeling based carvone interaction with Afl-R protein validated the antiaflatoxigenic mechanism of action. In addition, CCEO displayed augmentation in antioxidant potentiality after encapsulation into chitosan nanomatrix. Moreover, the in-situ study demonstrated the effective protection of Withania somnifera root samples (model herbal raw material) against fungal infestation and AFB1 contamination along with prevention of lipid peroxidation. The acceptable organoleptic qualities of W. somnifera root samples and favorable safety profile in mice (animal model) strengthen the application of nanoencapsulated CCEO emulsion as nano-fungitoxicant for preservation of herbal raw materials against fungi and AFB1 mediated biodeterioration.

BACKGROUND: In postmenopausal women (PMW), vasomotor symptoms, emotional oscillations and sleep disturbances can affect physiological and psychological functioning. However, the effect of menopause on oral health-related parameters is not been thoroughly studied. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate oral health, taste perception, eating habits, nutritional status and emotional well-being in PMW compared with a group of young and healthy pre-menopausal women (PrMW). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two groups (Group I: PMW and Group II: PrMW) with 30 participants each, participated in the cross-sectional study. The study proforma contained measures of oral health, taste perception, nutritional status and anxiety levels of the women in both groups using validated and previously used tools were designed and implemented. The data were analysed with student t, Mann-Whitney U, and chi-squared tests to evaluate the differences between the two groups. RESULTS: The cross-sectional study indicates no major differences in oral health, taste perception, nutritional and emotional status between PMW and PrMW. Nonetheless, there was a significant difference in perception of 'front teeth lengthening in size' and change in hot and cold sensations between the groups. Furthermore, the study group with PMW tends to have fewer natural teeth than the reference group. CONCLUSION: Overall, menopause does not appear to affect oral health, taste perception, nutrition or emotional health. It is suggested that oral health and taste perception, as well as nutritional and emotional status, are associated with gradual aging processes that may or may not be affected by menopause.

Background Malnutrition in children continues to be a serious public health problem in India. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the prevalence of malnutrition and assess factors contributing to it in children of the marginalized slum population of India, masked in the metropolitan cities.  Methods A retrospective data analysis with a cross-sectional model was conducted by medical volunteers affiliated with the Rotaract Club of Medicrew who had organized a free pediatric health check-up camp in the Dharavi village of Mumbai, India for children under five. Children under five years of age group of either sex residing in the slums of Dharavi and whose parents consented are included in the study. Neonates, children older than five years of age, and children whose parents did not consent for them to be included in the study were excluded. A pretested, pre-validated questionnaire was administered, and statistical analysis was done with p-values <0.05 considered to be statistically significant. Results  A total of 126 children were included. Out of these children, 109 of them (86.50%) had a mid-arm circumference of more than 12.5 cm (normal), 11 (8.73%) were between 11.5 cm and 12.5 cm (moderate acute malnutrition), and five (4.77%) were less than 11.5 cm (severe acute malnutrition). Among the 126 kids, 86 kids were above the age of two and their BMI was assessed, 36 (44.19%) were found to be underweight (<5th percentile) while 14 (16.3%) were obese (>95th percentile), and four (4.65%) were overweight (85th-95th percentile). For 106 (84.13%) of these children, the caregivers were mothers while others were fathers (n=4; 3.18%), grandmothers (n=5; 3.97%), sisters (n=5; 3.97%), and aunts (n=6; 4.76%). Out of those who had commenced receiving formal education, only 39 (55.71%) were in an appropriate grade for their age. The mean expenditure on food as a proportion of the total household income was 36.40% (standard deviation (SD) 15.0%). On the single-item sleep quality scale, the sleep of only 36 kids (28.58%) was reported by their caregivers as excellent. A high proportion of other medical problems were reported in the children. Conclusion Our study reports a substantial burden of malnutrition among children residing in the slums of Dharavi. Rigorous strengthening and conceptualization of on-ground nutritional programs targeted toward slum children should be done by Indian healthcare policymakers.

Heat-resistant explosives play a vital role in indispensable applications. For this, we have synthesized a novel, three-dimensional, solvent-free energetic metal-organic framework (EMOF) potassium 3,5-dinitro-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrazin-2-olate (KDNODP) straightforwardly. The synthesized EMOF was characterized through IR, NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry studies. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray diffraction provided a complete description of KDNODP. It exhibits a three-dimensional EMOF structure with remarkably balanced properties such as high density (2.11 g cm-3), excellent thermal stability (291 ℃), good detonation performance (8127 m s-1 and 26.94 GPa) and low mechanical sensitivity (IS = 35 J; FS = 360 N) than the commonly used heat-resistant explosives HNS (density = 1.74 g cm-3; VOD = 7164 m s-1, DP = 21.65 GPa, IS = 5 J) as well as the similar reported energetic potassium MOFs. To gain insights into the packing and intermolecular interactions, the Hirshfeld surface and a 2D fingerprint analysis were examined. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the particle size and morphological characteristics of KDNODP. These outcomes highlight a successful method for creating 3D EMOF based on a six-membered heterocycle as a potential heat-resistant energetic material.

Introduction: Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) contributes to around 10% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis of which the spine is the most common site. Isolated involvement of ulna diaphysis is extremely rare. We present a case of unifocal tuberculous osteomyelitis of ulna diaphysis in a 3 -year-old male child and highlight its resemblance with musculoskeletal tumors and stress the importance of GeneXpert mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)/resistance to rifampicin (RIF) in the diagnosis of OATB. Case Report: A mother of a 2-year-old male child incidentally noticed that her son complained of left forearm pain. She was not sure of any fall or trauma to the forearm. No history of fever or other constitutional symptoms was present. Clinical examination was uneventful except for local tenderness in over the dorsomedial aspect of the left mid forearm. A plain radiograph revealed an oval solitary lytic lesion over distal one-third ulna diaphysis. A needle biopsy was done after clinical, hematological, and radiological evaluation, and finally, GeneXpert detected tuberculosis without RIF. No further tests were required and the child was started on antitubercular therapy (ATT) which resulted in complete healing without any symptoms. Conclusion: The authors conclude that it is therefore essential to consider tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis while evaluating a lytic bone lesion. Where possible, all patients should have a biopsy of the lesion and provide a specimen for GeneXpert MTB/RIF to confirm the diagnosis and drug susceptibility testing.

Maize production and productivity are affected by drought stress in tropical and subtropical ecologies, as the majority of the area under maize cultivation in these ecologies is rain-fed. The present investigation was conducted to study the physiological and biochemical effects of 24-Epibrassinolide (EBR) as a plant hormone on drought tolerance in maize. Two maize hybrids, Vivek hybrid 9 and Bio 9637, were grown under three different conditions: (i) irrigated, (ii) drought, and (iii) drought+EBR. A total of 2 weeks before the anthesis, irrigation was discontinued to produce a drought-like condition. In the drought+EBR treatment group, irrigation was also stopped, and in addition, EBR was applied as a foliar spray on the same day in the drought plots. It was observed that drought had a major influence on the photosynthesis rate, membrane stability index, leaf area index, relative water content, and leaf water potential; this effect was more pronounced in Bio 9637. Conversely, the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased in both hybrids under drought conditions. Specifically, Vivek hybrid 9 showed 74% higher CAT activity under drought conditions as compared to the control. Additionally, EBR application further enhanced the activity of this enzyme by 23% compared to plants under drought conditions. Both hybrids experienced a significant reduction in plant girth due to drought stress. However, it was found that exogenously applying EBR reduced the detrimental effects of drought stress on the plant, and this effect was more pronounced in Bio 9637. In fact, Bio 9637 treated with EBR showed an 86% increase in proline content and a 70% increase in glycine betaine content compared to untreated plants under drought conditions. Taken together, our results suggested EBR enhanced tolerance to drought in maize hybrids. Hence, pre-anthesis foliar application of EBR might partly overcome the adverse effects of flowering stage drought in maize.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a major health problem worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality with every hour delay in initiation of therapy. A conventional method of blood culture and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) takes around 48-72 hours. Empirical antibiotics need to be administered until the sensitivity report is made available. It has been estimated that 20-50% of the empirical antibiotics are inappropriate, resulting in prolonged hospital stays, adverse effects, and emergence of drug resistance. Additionally, this also puts an extra financial burden on both the patients and healthcare settings. Performing direct Antimicrobial Sensitivity Testing (dAST) is an important tool to reduce turn-around time (TAT) by at least 18-24 hours, thus reducing morbidity and mortality among critically ill patients. METHODS: Direct AST (dAST) was performed from the positively flagged blood culture bottles received between December, 2021 to May, 2022 from Intensive Care Units (ICUs) on MuellerHinton Agar (MHA) using four drops of withdrawn blood. dAST was performed for six drugs: Ceftriaxone-30 µg (CTR), Piperacillin/Tazobactam-100/10 µg (PIT), Meropenem-10 µg (MRP), Ciprofloxacin-5 µg (CIP), Aztreonam-30 µg (AT), and Colistin (CL). The zone of inhibition was interpreted as per CLSI M100 ed32, 2022 guidelines. A parallel conventional method was also performed to examine for categorical agreement and disagreement. Identification was carried out using MALDI-TOF MS from the colonies that appeared on the dAST plate on the subsequent day. RESULTS: A total of 162 positively flagged blood culture bottles were included in the study. The majority of the Gram-negative organisms were from Enterobacterales (n=109), followed by Acinetobacter spp. (n=28) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n=25). Out of the 972 isolate-antimicrobial combinations, overall Categorical Agreement (CA) was seen in 936 (96.3%), whereas disagreement was observed in 36 with minor error (mE) in 21 (2.2%), major error (ME) in 7 (0.7%), and very major error (VME) in 8 (0.8%) when compared to the routine method. Categorical agreement (CA) of > 99% was seen in ceftriaxone (CTR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP). In comparison, the lowest CA was observed with meropenem (MRP) at 92%. Colistin dAST was performed using the E-strip method, and the result obtained was highly convincing, with an overall disagreement of only 1.2%. CONCLUSION: Rapid dAST from positively flagged blood culture bottles proved to significantly reduce the TAT from the time of sample collection to the first availability of antimicrobial susceptibility report with excellent categorical agreement of > 95% using the conventional disc diffusion method. Results obtained were within the acceptance criteria set by U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines of > 90% categorical agreement for a new method. We were able to obtain excellent concordance for colistin using the E-strip method. Performing dAST not only saves a "day", but its proper implementation would save a "life".

Silicon (Si), a newer trace element, is believed to be important for healthy bone formation and to decrease bone resorption, improving the quality of bone by manipulating several hormones and enzymes. Therefore, the current investigation was conducted to determine the impact of Si supplementation on growth, immunity, antioxidant, hormonal profile and biomarkers of bone health in pre-ruminant crossbred calves. Twenty-four crossbred calves (5-7 days) were selected on the basis of their body weight (BW 31.65 ± 0.46 kg) and divided into 4 groups (n = 6) and fed as per ICAR (2013) feeding standards except that these were additionally supplemented with 0 (Si0), 50 (Si50), 100 (Si100) and 150 (Si150) mg of Si/kg dry matter (DM) in four respective groups for 90 days. Every month, peripheral blood samples were drawn (0, 30, 60 and 90 days post supplementing with Si) and analysed for antioxidant status, hormonal profile and bone health biomarkers. It is reported that dietary Si supplementation improved (P < 0.05) net body weight gain (kg), average daily gain (g) and average dry matter intake (kg), whereas feed intake (kg/100 kg BW), was not altered due to Si supplementation. Structural growth measurements were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in Si100 and Si150 groups as compared to Si50 and control groups. However, immune response (humoral as well as cell-mediated immunity), erythrocytic antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, SOD, glutathione peroxidase, GPx and catalase), plasma ferric reducing total antioxidant power (FRAP) activity and the plasma concentration of total immunoglobulins (TIg) remained unaffected by Si supplementation. Silicon increased (P < 0.05) the concentration of plasma growth hormone (GH), vitamin D3, bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) and osteocalcin (OCN) in Si100 and Si150 groups, but the levels of calcitonin, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and hydroxyproline (HYP) remained similar among all the groups. As a result of the current investigation, it can be inferred that the inclusion of 100 and 150 mg of Si/kg DM was effective in improving the growth performance, growth hormone, vitamin D3 and bone health status in pre-ruminant calves. However, supplementation of 150 mg of Si/kg DM had no additional benefit; therefore 100 mg of Si/kg DM is the optimum level of Si supplementation in pre-ruminant calves.

Key Clinical Message: Osteoblastoma of the frontal sinus, although rare, can manifest with seizures and pneumocephalus, underscoring the importance of thorough evaluation and complete surgical excision to prevent serious complications and ensure optimal patient outcomes. Abstract: Osteoblastoma is an infrequent bone tumor, with origins typically in the vertebrae and long bones. While craniofacial involvement is rare, it may occur in regions such as the paranasal sinuses. We present a case of osteoblastoma located in the frontal sinus, an exceptionally uncommon site, resulting in seizures secondary to pneumocephalus. A 21-year-old male presented with a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and postictal confusion. Imaging studies revealed a well-defined lesion in the left frontal sinus causing cortical breach, destruction of the posterior wall, and pneumocephalus. A total surgical excision was performed through bifrontal craniotomy. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of osteoblastoma. Postoperative recovery was uneventful, with a follow-up CT scan showing complete lesion excision. Osteoblastomas, especially in the cranial sinuses, are rare entities that may present asymptomatically but can lead to severe complications. The risk of recurrence underscores the importance of complete surgical resection for optimal patient outcomes.

The majority of problematic conditions resulting from dental implant treatment are inflammatory in character, but certain isolated occurrences of primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have been discovered in the area of implants. The goal of this study was to examine whether there is a link between dental implants and the development of OSCC in patients who have a history of a potentially malignant lesion (PML) or malignancy. Using the keywords "carcinoma" AND "dental implants," a search was conducted in the MEDLINE (PubMed), National Center for Biotechnology Information, and Google Scholar databases for case reports and case series in which OSCC was discovered as a primary cancer in the region of dental implants. An initial search identified 260 articles, 247 of which were excluded based on study inclusion or exclusion criteria, leaving 13 articles chosen for inclusion and a total of 30 patients who developed primary oral cancer surrounding osseointegrated titanium-based dental implants. In the studies included in the present review, 22 (73%) of 30 patients with peri-implant cancer had a history of PML or carcinoma. There is no statistical evidence of a direct association between dental implants and OSCC in patients with a history of a PML or malignant lesion. There have been some case reports of OSCC in the region of dental implants in patients with a history of a PML or malignant lesion, but further studies are needed to prove a definitive relationship.

The intricate network of glands and organs that makes up the endocrine system. Hormones are used to regulate and synchronize the nervous and physiological systems. The agents which perturbate an endocrine system are called endocrine disruptors and they can eventually affect cellular proliferation and differentiation in target tissues. A subclass of endocrine disruptors known as thyroid disruptors (TDs) or thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDCs) influence the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis or directly interfere with thyroid function by binding to thyroid hormone receptors. Thyroid hormone levels in circulation are now included in more test guidelines (OECD TG 441, 407, 408, 414, 421/422, 443/416). Although these might be adequate to recognize thyroid adversity, they are unable to explain the underlying mechanism of action. Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) and sodium iodide symporter (NIS), two proteins essential in the biosynthesis of thyroid hormones, are well-accepted molecular targets for inhibition. The screening of a large number of molecules using high throughput screening (HTS) requires a minimum quantity of sample, cost, and time consuming. Whereas 3-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) analysis can screen the TDCs before synthesizing a compound. In the present study, the human TPO (hTPO) and NIS (hNIS) structures were modelled using homology modeling and the quality of the structures was validated satisfactorily using MD simulation for 100ns. Further, 190 human TPO inhibitors with IC50 were curated from Comptox and docked with the modelled structure of TPO using D238, H239 and D240 centric grid. The binding conformation of a molecule with low binding energy was used as a reference and the rest other molecules were aligned after generating the possible conformers. The activity-stratified partition was performed for aligned molecules and training set (139), test set (51) were defined. The machine learning models such as k Nearest Neighbor (kNN) and Random Forest (RF) models were built and validated using external experimental dataset containing 10 molecules. Among the 10 molecules, all 10 molecules were identified as TPO inhibitors and demonstrated 100 % accuracy qualitatively. To confirm the selective TPO inhibition all 10 molecules were docked with the modelled structure of hNIS and the results have demonstrated the selective TPO inhibition.

Inflammatory necrosis of the falciform ligament is an extremely rare cause of acute right upper quadrant pain. Due to overlapping symptoms with pathologies affecting the gall bladder and liver, this poses a diagnostic challenge with limited existing literature. Here, we report a case of a 62-year-old female patient presenting in the accident and emergency department with right upper quadrant pain. The patient underwent ultrasonography and revealed thickened and echogenic falciform ligament. Further, a computed tomography revealed swollen falciform ligament with associated fat stranding. The patient was kept under conservative management and improved over 2 weeks.

In recent years, deep learning (DL) has shown great potential in the field of dermatological image analysis. However, existing datasets in this domain have significant limitations, including a small number of image samples, limited disease conditions, insufficient annotations, and non-standardized image acquisitions. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel framework called DermSynth3D. DermSynth3D blends skin disease patterns onto 3D textured meshes of human subjects using a differentiable renderer and generates 2D images from various camera viewpoints under chosen lighting conditions in diverse background scenes. Our method adheres to top-down rules that constrain the blending and rendering process to create 2D images with skin conditions that mimic in-the-wild acquisitions, ensuring more meaningful results. The framework generates photo-realistic 2D dermatological images and the corresponding dense annotations for semantic segmentation of the skin, skin conditions, body parts, bounding boxes around lesions, depth maps, and other 3D scene parameters, such as camera position and lighting conditions. DermSynth3D allows for the creation of custom datasets for various dermatology tasks. We demonstrate the effectiveness of data generated using DermSynth3D by training DL models on synthetic data and evaluating them on various dermatology tasks using real 2D dermatological images. Modification of an unsymmetric B,O,N-doped aromatic core with peripheral mesogenic units triggers self-assembly into a columnar hexagonal mesophase, which is stable between 22 and 144 °C. The columnar assembly is preserved in a glassy state below 22 °C. The B,O,N-doped mesogen displays narrowband sky-blue multiresonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) under diluted conditions and bright excimer emission in condensed phase. Our combined experimental and theoretical approach provides insight into the development of strongly aggregating liquid crystalline MR-TADF emitters.

Nanobiochar is an advanced nanosized biochar with enhanced properties and wide applicability for a variety of modern-day applications. Nanobiochar can be developed easily from bulk biochar through top-down approaches including ball-milling, centrifugation, sonication, and hydrothermal synthesis. Nanobiochar can also be modified or engineered to obtain "engineered nanobiochar" or biochar nanocomposites with enhanced properties and applications. Nanobiochar provides many fold enhancements in surface area (0.4-97-times), pore size (0.1-5.3-times), total pore volume (0.5-48.5-times), and surface functionalities over bulk biochars. These enhancements have given increased contaminant sorption in both aqueous and soil media. Further, nanobiochar has also shown catalytic properties and applications in sensors, additive/fillers, targeted drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, polymer production, etc. The advantages and disadvantages of nanobiochar over bulk biochar are summarized herein, in detail. The processes and mechanisms involved in nanobiochar synthesis and contaminants sorption over nanobiochar are summarized. Finally, future directions and recommendations are suggested.

Modern deep learning training procedures rely on model regularization techniques such as data augmentation methods, which generate training samples that increase the diversity of data and richness of label information. A popular recent method, mixup, uses convex combinations of pairs of original samples to generate new samples. However, as we show in our experiments, mixup  can produce undesirable synthetic samples, where the data is sampled off the manifold and can contain incorrect labels. We propose ζ-mixup, a generalization of mixup  with provably and demonstrably desirable properties that allows convex combinations of T≥2 samples, leading to more realistic and diverse outputs that incorporate information from T original samples by using a p-series interpolant. We show that, compared to mixup, ζ-mixup  better preserves the intrinsic dimensionality of the original datasets, which is a desirable property for training generalizable models. Furthermore, we show that our implementation of ζ-mixup  is faster than mixup, and extensive evaluation on controlled synthetic and 26 diverse real-world natural and medical image classification datasets shows that ζ-mixup  outperforms mixup, CutMix, and traditional data augmentation techniques. Purpose: This study identified critical constraints in technology adoption for Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) compared with puddled transplanted rice (PTR) practices. We present the impact of DSR technology adoption on paddy yield, income generation, and cost incurred on various farm operations. Furthermore, the study investigates whether a dry DSR practice provides more economic and production benefits than a wet DSR. Methodology: We used a multi-stage sampling (from state to district-to-village-to-farmers) and conducted a face-to-face questionnaire survey to collect primary farm-level data. We collected 669 farm and household-level data and analyzed the impact of DSR and dry DSR adoption over PTR and wet DSR, respectively. Initially, the study employed probit regression analysis to identify the DSR adoption determinants. Subsequently, using the Propensity Score Matching approach, the study measures the impact of DSR adoption over PTR in terms of yield, income, and cost management. Finally, using the PSM approach, the study estimated the impact of dry DSR adoption over wet DSR. Findings: Probit estimates suggest that variables like education, membership in farmers' organizations, farm experience, institutional credit, crop insurance, off-farm income, and smartphone and television ownership positively regulate DSR adoption. The impact assessment analysis reveals that the adoption of DSR over PTR results in marginal yield improvement. However, the cost of irrigation, land preparation, and fertilization is significantly lower in DSR, resulting in an additional income of ₹5192/acre for DSR adopters. Moreover, a comparative analysis between dry DSR and wet DSR indicates that farmers can achieve ₹2467/acre by adopting dry DSR. Practical implications: Our research findings designate the necessity for implementing policies and strategies to promote the adoption of DSR among non-adopters. Besides economic benefits, adopting the DSR method can yield environmental benefits, improve soil health, mitigate soil erosion, and decrease water use.

CONTEXT: La2Mo2O9 is a potential electrolyte material for SOFC due to its higher oxygen conduction at high temperatures. However, La2Mo2O9 suffers from detrimental phase transition at high temperature from monoclinic α to cubic ß phase. This phase transition can be prevented by lowering the temperature. However, lowering the temperature reduces the ionic conductivity. Substitution of transition metal on Mo site is the best strategy for the suppression of phase transition. In the present work, the effect of substituting element on different sites has been investigated. From the result, it is observed that the band gap increases with concentration of Er. METHOD: For the assessment of mechanism behind the improved performance, the atomic insight is crucial. For that, we have employed ab initio DFT calculation. We have used PBE and grimme d3 dispersion correction for the accuracy of evaluated band gap and electrochemical stability. All DFT calculations have been performed using Quantum ESPRESSO pwscf code's and for the assessment of thermodynamical stability of La2Mo2O9 and the doped structures, an alternative descriptor, the global instability index (GII), which is based on the bond valance sum approach implemented in SoftBV was used. All the visualizations were done by XCrySDen and VESTA open source software.

The mining industry confronts significant challenges in mitigating airborne particulate matter (PM) pollution, necessitating innovative approaches for effective monitoring and prediction. This research focuses on the design and development of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based real-time monitoring system tailored for PM pollutants in surface mines, specifically PM 1.0, PM 2.5, PM 4.0, and PM 10.0. The novelty of this work lies in the integration of IoT technology for real-time measurement and the application of machine learning (ML) techniques for accurate prediction based on recorded dust pollutants data. The study's findings indicate that PM 1.0 pollutants exhibited the highest concentration in the atmosphere of the ball clay surface mine sites, with the stockyard site registering the maximum levels of PM pollutants (28.45 µg/m3, 27.89 µg/m3, 26.17 µg/m3, and 27.24 µg/m3, respectively) due to the dry nature of clay materials. Additionally, the research establishes four ML models-Decision Tree (DT), Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR), Random Forest (RF), and Linear Regression (LR)-for predicting PM pollutant concentrations. Notably, Random Forest demonstrates superior performance with the lowest Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) at 1.079 and 1.497, respectively. This comprehensive solution, combining IoT-based monitoring and ML-based prediction, contributes to sustainable mining practices, safeguarding worker well-being, and preserving the environment.
