RESUMO

ObjectiveIt is known that there is a high comorbidity between eating disorders and autistic traits among both the clinical and non-clinical populations. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between ASD and AN, and the effects of obsessive-compulsive traits. Participants: The study has been conducted in a non-clinical sample. A total of 290 university students have been included. Methods: Autism Quotient (AQ), Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI) have been used. Results: There is a positive relationship between EAT-40, MOCI scores, and AQ total scores. However, after controlling the sex and MOCI scores relation in total AQ and EAT-40 scores, they have become statistically insignificant. In regression, only MOCI scores and AQ Communication subscale scores have been able to predict the EAT-40 scores. Conclusions: It has been found that the relationship between autistic traits and eating attitudes is moderated by obsessive-compulsive traits.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is among the serious clinical pictures of early childhood, and its main symptoms are qualitative dysfunction in social interactions with impairment of verbal and nonverbal communication and limitations in interests and activities. METHODS: This study aimed to examine the clinical conditions that mediate this comorbidity, compare parental quality of life in isolated ASD and ASD with epilepsy, demonstrate the relationships between clinical and EEG findings obtained in diagnostic evaluation, and examine the results in light of the literature. RESULTS: The study sample consisted of 154 ASD patients; 26 were girls (16.9 %) and 128 (83.1 %) were boys. Of the patients with epilepsy, seizures were focal in 14 patients (9.1 %), generalized in 9 patients (5.8 %), and unspecified in 1 patient (0.6 %). Intellectual ability was found to be a significant predictor of epilepsy diagnosis. Mean (SD) total scores in the Quality of Life in Autism Questionnaire were 131.84 (10.68) among mothers of children with ASD-epilepsy and 148.33 (14.03) among mothers of children with ASD alone (P < .001). CONCLUSION: Many psychiatric and medical conditions can co-occur with ASD. Determining the prognostic criteria for ASD is of great importance in coordinating lifelong autism rehabilitation. Improving autism-specific symptoms will benefit children with ASD as well as help mitigate parental anxiety.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There have been several studies investigating the association between Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and psychiatric disorders although there is insufficient data on causality. Suicide, depression, and anxiety disorders have been especially investigated in this regard. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether there is any causal association between Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and suicide attempts in adolescents. METHODOLOGY: This is a case-control study conducted between January and December 2019. A total of 27 adolescents who had attempted suicide and were aged between 12 and 18 years were included in the study. 26 age and sex ratio matched healthy volunteers were taken as the control group. A possible association between suicide attempts and Toxoplasma gondii serology (IgM and IgG) was investigated.. RESULTS: The suicide attempt group consisted of 17 females and 10 males. The mean age was 15.9 ± 1.4 (13.5-17.9) years. Toxoplasma gondii IgG seropositivity was 3.7% (1/27) in the suicide attempt group and 3.8% (1/26) in the control group. There was no significant association between the suicide attempt group and the control group in terms of the presence of Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our study is one of the few studies examining the association between Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity and suicide attempts in adolescents yet we did not find any significant association. Further evidence is needed to clarify this controversial issue.

RESUMO

Objective: Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescence. Genetic studies implicate the genetic component of suicide independent from associated psychiatric disorder. Although genetics is an important factor that might be associated with suicide, limited progress is achieved to identify the candidate genes in adolescents. Methods: The study included 97 patients and 106 controls. Five leptin receptor single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) region examined. Depressive scores were measured with Children Depression Inventory and suicidal behaviour was measured by Suicide Probability Scale. Logistic and linear regression analysis used for determining to predictors. Results: In linear regression analysis (R2: 0.786) both previous suicide attempt (B:5.553, t:2.613 p: .035) and having a mutant allele in rs1171276 SNP region (B:4.346 t:2.220 p: .048) have been associated with suicidal behaviour. In logistic regression analysis, family history of depression (p < .0001, OR: 4.2 [1.7-9.6]) and number of stressful life events (p: .001, OR: 1.7 [1.3-2.1]) predicted depression significantly. Conclusion: Leptin receptor polymorphism could result in an increase in impulsive behaviour and suicide scores with leptin resistance. Our research is the first study to investigate the relationship between depression, suicidal behaviour and leptin receptor polymorphism in adolescent sample. Similar studies could be carried out on a community basis.KEY POINTSAn association has been found between rs1171276 single nucleotide polymorphism of leptin receptor and the suicide probability scores in depressed adolescents.Family history of depression and number of stressful life events predict depressive scores significantly.Leptin receptor single nucleotide polymorphism may be a risk factor for adolescent suicide by increasing impulsive behaviour.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: It has been demonstrated that decreased left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is associated with an increased risk of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). In this study, we aimed to assess whether there is a relationship between left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and renal function decline after coronary angiography (CAG). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study consisted of two groups: group I, patients with normal diastolic function; group II, patients with cardiac symptoms and abnormal diastolic function. Serum creatinine (Crea) and glomerular filtration rates (GFR) were measured before and after 48 h of CAG. RESULTS: After the procedure, serum Crea values were higher in group II compared with group I (p = 0.051). Postprocedural 48-h GFR values determined by Cockcroft-Gault and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equations were lower in group II compared with group I (p = 0.016 and p = 0.003, respectively). Delta (Δ) ΔCrea and ΔGFR determined by the Cockcroft-Gault and MDRD equations were statistically higher in group II than in group I (p = 0.005, p = 0.052, p = 0.030). The presence of higher age (p = 0.025), E/E' lateral ratio (p = 0.030), and left atrial volume index (p = 0.05) were independent predictors of worsening renal function. CONCLUSION: The presence of diastolic dysfunction may play a role in determining the risk of CIN in patients with normal LVEF.

RESUMO

Hydatid cysts are a serious health problem in many countries that raise farm animals, and they usually involve the liver and lungs. Although cardiac involvement is a rare manifestation of hydatid cyst disease, its early diagnosis and surgical management are crucial. Patients with cardiac hydatidosis may develop acute life-threatening complications secondary to their invasion of surrounding cardiac structures, such as cyst rupture together with systemic and pulmonary dissemination. Therefore, surgical excision is the definitive method of treatment for cardiac hydatid cysts in order to prevent these potential life-threatening complications, even for asymptomatic patients. Herein, we report the case of a 36-year-old man who initially presented with pleuritic chest pain, hemoptysis, and dyspnea. This was followed by the revelation of multiple cardiopericardial hydatid cysts which were discovered via transesophageal echocardiography and multislice computed tomography. In this case, there was a higher risk of cyst rupture and thromboembolism during systemic and pulmonary circulation due to the invasive nature of the cysts which were located in the left atrium as well as between the pulmonary artery and aorta. The patient successfully underwent the removal of the multiple cardiac cysts under cardiopulmonary bypass by taking into account their relationship with the surrounding cardiac structures and the potential risk of local, systemic, and pulmonary dissemination. A pathological evaluation of the surgical specimens confirmed the diagnosis of cardiac echinococcosis and the aggressive nature of the cardiopericardial hydatid cysts by demonstrating their myocardial invasion.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aspirin (ASA) is frequently used to prevent cardiovascular events and improve renal graft function after renal transplantation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that decreased responsiveness to ASA therapy is associated with an increased risk of atherothrombotic events. However, no clinical trial to date has evaluated the incidence and clinical importance of ASA resistance among renal transplant recipients. AIM: To assess the incidence of ASA resistance and its association with cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) and renal graft function after renal transplantation. METHODS: We prospectively included 40 patients undergoing living related donor renal transplantation using ASA (80 mg/d) in the study. ASA resistance was defined using a platelet function analyzer (PFA-100). Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was measured by postoperative Tc-99m diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid renal scintigraphy. We investigated the incidence of ASA resistance and its relationship to CRF and renal graft function. RESULTS: ASA resistance was noted in 11 patients (27.5%). The demographic characteristics of the patients were similar in both groups (P > .05). Compared with patients in the ASA-sensitive group, patients in the ASA-resistant group showed significantly higher total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, C-reactive protein, and fibrinogen levels and lower GFRs (44 +/- 21 mL/min vs 63 +/- 26 mL/min, P = .03). The incidence of ASA resistance was higher among patients with GFRs < 60 mL/min compared with those with a GFR >or= 60 mL/min (10% vs 1%; P = .012). CONCLUSION: ASA resistance is associated with higher lipid levels and inflammatory and thrombotic cardiovascular risk factors and lower GFRs in renal transplant recipients.
