RESUMO

Iron pyrite [cubic FeS2 (cFeS2)] is considered as an earth-abundant and low-cost thin-film photovoltaic material. However, the conversion efficiency of cFeS2-based solar cells remains below 3%. To elucidate this limitation, we evaluate the optical and electrical characteristics of cFeS2 single crystals that are grown using the flux method, thus providing us an understanding of the electron transport behavior of cFeS2 single crystals. The oxide layer on the surface of cFeS2, which can possibly have an influence on the electrical characteristics of cFeS2, is removed prior to characterization via optical spectroscopy and electrical transport measurement. The optical property of cFeS2 was found to have both indirect and direct transitions. We also observed the presence of a band tail below the conduction band. The obtained electrical transport behavior indicates that cFeS2 bulk exhibits a high defect density and a disordered phase, thus leading to the hopping conduction mechanism. Our results will pave the way for the development of photovoltaic applications with iron pyrite.

Here, we demonstrate the high electromechanical strain and enhanced temperature characteristics in the c-axis-oriented lead-free (Na,Bi)TiO3-BaTiO3 (NBT-BT) polycrystalline thin film prepared on Si substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. The effective transverse piezoelectric coefficient, e31*, estimated from the electromechanical strain measured under high electric field, reaches a high level of -12.5 C/m2, and is comparable to those of conventional Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 films. In-situ X-ray diffraction measurement and electron diffraction analysis revealed the electromechanical strain of the NBT-BT film to originate predominantly in elongation of the tetragonal (P4bm) crystal lattice in the c-axis direction. In addition to the large e31*, the NBT-BT film exhibits enhanced permittivity maximum temperature, Tm, of ~400 °C and no depolarization below Tm, as compared to bulk NBT-BT having Tm ≈ 300 °C and a depolarization temperature of ~100 °C. We conclude that the enhancement of temperature characteristics is associated with the distorted P4bm crystal lattice formed by deposition-induced stress and defects. We believe that the present study paves the way for practical applications of lead-free piezoelectric thin films in electromechanical devices.

We demonstrated the field-effect conductivity modulation of a gold thin film by all-solid-state electric-double-layer (EDL) gating at room temperature using an epitaxially grown oxide fast lithium conductor, La2/3-xLi3xTiO3 (LLT), as a solid electrolyte. The linearly increasing gold conductivity with increasing gate bias demonstrates that the conductivity modulation is indeed due to carrier injection by EDL gating. The response time becomes exponentially faster with increasing gate bias, a result of the onset of nonlinear ionic transportation. This nonlinear dynamic response indicates that the ionic motion-driven device can be much faster than would be estimated from a linear ionic transport model.

Piezoelectric ceramics of new composition with higher Curie temperature Tc are extensively studied for better piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Apart from the compositional research, enhanced Tc could be achieved in a modified structure. We have considered that a designed laminated structure of Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT)-based thin film, i.e., relaxed heteroepitaxial epitaxial thin film, is one of the promising modified structures to enhance Tc . This structure exhibits an extraordinarily high Tc , i.e., [Formula: see text] (bulk [Formula: see text]). In this paper, we have fabricated the designed laminated structure of high Tc (1-x)BiScO3-xPbTiO3. Tc of BS-0.8PT thin films was found to be extraordinarily high, i.e., [Formula: see text] (bulk Tc , [Formula: see text]). Their ferroelectric performances were comparable to those of PZT-based thin films. The present BS-xPT thin films have a high potential for fabrication of high-temperature-stable piezoelectric MEMS. The mechanism of the enhanced Tc is probably the presence of the mechanically stable interface to temperature in the laminated structure. We believe this designed laminated structure can extract fruitful properties of bulk ferroelectric ceramics.

In-plane unstrained single-c-domain/single-crystal thin films of PZT-based ternary ferroelectric perovskite, ξPb(Mn,Nb)O3-(1 - ξ)PZT, were grown on SrRuO(3)/Pt/MgO substrates using magnetron sputtering followed by quenching. The sputtered unstrained thin films exhibit unique ferroelectric properties: high coercive field, Ec > 180 kV/cm, large remanent polarization, P(r) = 100 µC/cm(2), small relative dielectric constants, ε* = 100 to 150, high Curie temperature, Tc = ~600 °C, and bulk-like large transverse piezoelectric constants, e31,f = -12.0 C/m(2) for PZT(48/52) at ξ = 0.06. The unstrained thin films are an ideal structure to extract the bulk ferroelectric properties. Their micro-structures and ferroelectric properties are discussed in relation to the potential applications for piezoelectric MEMS.

We treated a patient in whom low-dose irinotecan therapy was effective for the treatment of multiple lung metastases of cholangiocellular carcinoma after operation. The patient was a 50-year-old man. He underwent extended right hepatectomy for cholangiocellular carcinoma, and multiple lung metastases occurred 8 months after operation. For the treatment of lung metastases, low-dose irinotecan therapy (70 or 40 mg/week) was carried out. Eighteen months after the lung recurrence, he is still alive with a good quality of life, although the lung metastases have progressed. These results suggest that low-dose irinotecan therapy can be effective for lung metastases of cholangiocellular carcinoma.
