RESUMO

Background and Aims: Personality traits, such as neuroticism and extraversion, are emerging as important predictors of falls. Despite their significance, existing fall prevention programs often overlook these traits, creating a notable research gap. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive scoping review to explore the existing literature on the relationships among personality traits, falls, and fall-related psychological concerns (FrPCs). Methods: This scoping review will adhere to the framework established by Arksey and O'Malley, incorporating extensions recommended by the Joanna Briggs Institute and using the PRISMA-ScR checklist. A thorough search strategy will be employed, aligning with the population, concept, and context (PCC) selection criteria. Electronic databases, including MEDLINE, APA PsycINFO, Web of Science, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus, will be searched from their inception to the present. Additionally, a manual search of the reference lists of identified and relevant full-text articles will be conducted. Two independent reviewers will screen titles and abstracts, perform full-text reviews, and extract data from pertinent articles. Discussion: Personality traits are increasingly recognized as influential predictors of falls and related psychological concerns. This review aims to make a substantial contribution to the existing literature by being the first to comprehensively explore and provide a descriptive synthesis of the relationship between personality traits and falls, as well as FrPCs in adults. It is hoped that the outcomes of this review will enhance our comprehension of the role of personality traits in falls, potentially informing future research and strategies for this critical area of study. Scoping Review Registration: This scoping review protocol was registered with Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/KR74X).

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: There is an occupational health concern about welders' inhalation of toxic aluminium fumes. We investigated whether serum aluminium level (SAL) and demographic variables can significantly predict physical health parameters, cognition, and quality of life (QoL) among welders. METHODS: The cross-sectional study involved 100 age- and location-matched men (50 welders and 50 non-welders). SAL obtained using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer, and data collected using blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) apparatuses, biodata form, pain rating scale, General Practitioner Assessment of Cognition, WHOQoL-BREF, and Nordic musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) questionnaire were analysed using independent samples t test, chi-square, Pearson's correlation, and hierarchical linear regression. RESULTS: Welders had significantly higher SAL (mean difference [MD] = 1.77 µg/L, p < 0.001), lower QoL (MD = 3.92, p = 0.039), and higher prevalence of MSS on the neck (χ2 = 10.187, p = 0.001), shoulder (χ2 = 9.007, p = 0.003), upper back (χ2 = 6.832, p = 0.009), and knee (χ2 = 12.190, p < 0.001) than non-welders. There was a significant bivariate association between SAL, systolic blood pressure (ß = 0.313, p = 0.002), and BMI (ß = 0.279, p = 0.005), but not pain intensity, cognition, or QoL. SAL remained a significant predictor of systolic blood pressure after adjustment for physical health and QoL parameters (ß = 0.191, p = 0.044). The association between SAL and social QoL became significant after adjustment for physical health and other QoL domains (ß = - 0.210, p = 0.032) and demographic variables (ß = - 0.233, p = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Welders had significantly higher SAL, musculoskeletal symptoms, blood pressure, and lower QoL than non-welders. SAL was associated with adverse physical health parameters and social-related QoL, not cognition. We recommend routine aluminium bioavailability and physical health checks among welders.

RESUMO

Introduction: This article describes the health and lifestyle profile of Hutterite farmers in Alberta who participated in a health literacy education program. Methods: Longitudinal quantitative and qualitative data from the sustainable farm families (SFF) Alberta program (2014-2017) were used to describe the health and lifestyle profile of Hutterites. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and conventional and summative content analysis. Results: Four hundred and twenty-seven Hutterite men and women aged 18-75 years participated in a health literacy education program. About 50%-80% of Hutterites reported good health status, no hearing or sleeping problems, little to no body pain, fewer breathing and bladder difficulties and no constipation/diarrhoea. On average, the risk of diabetes was low (mean = 3.4) with total glucose (mean = 5.2) and cholesterol (mean = 3.5) within normal levels. Mental health outcomes such as anxiety (mean = 4.1), stress (mean = 6.7) and depression (mean = 3.1) were also within normal to mild ranges. Qualitative data showed that Hutterite farmers are committed to maintaining physical health and adopting strategies to improve mental health and lifestyle behaviours. Conclusion: Hutterites have recognisable health challenges like other rural farming communities but are aware of their physical and mental health challenges and engage in healthy lifestyle behaviours. The Hutterite tenets of living present a perfect ecological setting for sustainable health promotion intervention.

INTRODUCTION: The study was aimed at determining patients' satisfaction level with physiotherapy in the management of chronic mechanical neck pain (CMNP) in physiotherapy departments of the 3 public hospitals in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS: A mixed-method design that involved 51 and five both purposively selected participants for the cross-sectional survey (CSS) and qualitative study, respectively. For the CSS, data was collected using the MedRisk instrument and analyzed using the Chi-square test at p ≤ .05. For the qualitative study, patients' satisfaction was explored through a focus group discussion (FGD) and analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULTS: For CSS, 49.0% and 7.8% of the participants reported excellent and fair satisfaction, respectively, with physiotherapy in the management of CMNP. There was no significant association of patients' satisfaction level with: age (p = .588); sex (p = .851); and marital status (p = .409). For the FGD, three themes (patients' experience with physiotherapists; patient satisfaction with physiotherapy services; patient satisfaction with other health care services) that emerged further explained that participants were satisfied with physiotherapy management of their CMNP. However, they were not satisfied with the attitude of the record officers, constancy of the same treating physiotherapists, and unavailability of resources. CONCLUSION: Patients with CMNP are satisfied with the physiotherapy care they received.
