Solitary fibrous tumours are rare and they were first described in the pleura of the lungs. However this rare tumour is being increasingly recognised in the oro-facial region and other extra-pleural sites among adults. We present a paediatric case of a solitary fibrous tumour of the parotid gland in an 11-year-old girl who was also diagnosed as having type I neurofibromatosis.

The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is associated with various conditions including malignant disease, particularly small cell lung cancer. It has been reported to occur in 3% of patients with head and neck cancer. Less well known is its association with oral squamous cell carcinoma. This report describes a patient with SIADH associated with recurrent oral squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the use of a resorbable oxycellulose dressing with a fibrin adhesive for the prevention of postextraction hemorrhage in patients taking anticoagulants. STUDY DESIGN: A control group of 26 patients with a preoperative international normalized ratio (INR) in the range of 2.0 to 4.2 had extractions performed with the use of local anesthesia and the socket(s) dressed with a resorbable oxycellulose dressing and sutured with a resorbable suture. The study group with a comparable INR range of 2.1 to 4.1 was treated in a similar manner, except the sockets were dressed with a fibrin adhesive. RESULTS: No discernible difference in the postoperative outcome with regard to hemorrhage was noted. Postoperative pain was reported more frequently in the group that used a resorbable oxycellulose dressing. Only 1 patient had significant postoperative bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that in patients receiving warfarin whose INR is within the therapeutic range, the fibrin adhesive is as effective as the resorbable oxycellulose dressing in preventing postextraction hemorrhage.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic (Pindborg) tumour is a rare primary tumour of the jaw with a characteristic histological appearance. We describe here its appearance on computed tomography (an expanding, multilocular lesion that is thinning both plates of the mandible, is well-defined and contains scattered radio-opaque areas) and magnetic resonance imaging (predominantly hypointense on T1-weighted images and of mixed hyperintensity on T2-weighted images; the extent of the tumour including involvement of the mandibular canal was clear).

We present the case of a 40-year-old male Caucasian patient who developed surgical emphysema of the neck five weeks after surgery for exostoses of the external auditory canal. Imaging of the temporal bone demonstrated that the surgery had resulted in entry into the temporomandibular joint. A mechanism is proposed for this novel complication.

Relapse following midface osteotomies in cleft lip and palate patients was investigated in a retrospective study. The amount of surgical movement and subsequent relapse was measured using a computer aided digitisation programme with reference to the cranial base. The mean maxillary surgical advance was 5.09 mm horizontally and 5.70 mm vertically. After a mean follow up period of 22 months the mean relapse of the anterior maxilla was 0.90 mm (17%) horizontally and 1.55 mm (27.2%) vertically. Preliminary indications are that direct skeletal fixation of the maxilla by bone plates results in less relapse than when cranio-maxillary fixation is employed.

Two cases of the monomorphic clear cell tumour are described. The histology, incidence, high recurrence rate and clinical management are discussed.

Sweat gland tumors are uncommon, and yet the chondroid syringoma (mixed tumor of the skin) appears most frequently on the faces of adults. Clinicians diagnosing and treating diseases of the head and neck should be aware of these tumors. A case of the chondroid syringoma in the upper lip is reported; the clinical features, histology, treatment, and follow-up are discussed.
