RESUMO

Pesticides are widely used to increase agricultural productivity, however, weak adhesion and deposition lead to low efficient utilization. Herein, we prepare a nanopesticide formulation (tebuconazole nanopesticides) which is leaf-adhesive, and water-dispersed via a rapid nanoparticle precipitation method, flash nanoprecipitation, using temperature-responsive copolymers poly-(2-(dimethylamino)ethylmethylacrylate)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone) as the carrier. Compared with commercial suspensions, the encapsulation by the polymer improves the deposition of TEB, and the contact angle on foliage is lowered by 40.0°. Due to the small size and strong van der Waals interactions, the anti-washing efficiency of TEB NPs is increased by 37% in contrast to commercial ones. Finally, the acute toxicity of TEB NPs to zebrafish shows a more than 25-fold reduction as compared to commercial formulation indicating good biocompatibility of the nanopesticides. This work is expected to enhance pesticide droplet deposition and adhesion, maximize the use of pesticides, tackling one of the application challenges of pesticides.

RESUMO

The rising environmental challenges are capturing the attention of stakeholders of corporations due to increasing competition. The sustainable performance of firms does not merely gauge their economic performance but also their sustainable development. Since the environmental supply chain management of firms has an important part in maneuvering their sustainable performance, the present study focuses on assessing the impact of green supply chain management practices on the sustainable performance of the textile, automobile, and tobacco industries. The data were collected from 384 organizations and analyzed through SPSS and AMOS. The results reveal that the impact of green manufacturing, green purchases, eco-design, and green information system are significant and positive on the sustainable performance of the organizations, whereas the impact of cooperation with customers is insignificant. Similarly, the moderation of institutional pressures between green manufacturing, green purchases, eco-design, and sustainability performance is insignificant, whereas it significantly moderates between cooperation with customers, green information systems, and sustainable performance. The study is significant and novel for considering five different factors of green supply chain management (GSCM): green manufacturing, green purchasing, cooperation with customers, eco-design, and green information systems. Furthermore, adding institutional pressures as a moderator between GSCM and sustainable performance adds to the novelty and uniqueness of the research. The managerial implications have also been discussed.

RESUMO

Polyelectrolyte (PE) nanogels consisting of cross-linked PE networks integrate the advanced features of both nanogels and PEs. The soft environment and abundant intrinsic charges are of special interest for enzyme immobilization. However, the crucial factors that regulate enzyme encapsulation and activation remain obscure to date. Herein, we synthesized cationic poly (dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate), PDMAEMA, nanogels with well-defined size and cross-link degrees and fully investigated the effects of different control factors on lipase immobilization. We demonstrate that the cationic PDMAEMA nanogels indeed enable efficient and safe loading of anionic lipase without disturbing their structures. Strong charge interaction achieved by tuning pH and larger particle size are favorable for lipase loading, while the enhanced enzymatic activity demands nanogels with smaller size and a moderate cross-link degree. As such, PDMAEMA nanogels with a hydrodynamic radius of 35 nm and 30% cross-linker fraction display the optimal catalytic efficiency, which is fourfold of that of free lipase. Moreover, the immobilization endows enhanced enzymatic activity in a broad scope of pH, ionic strength, and temperature, demonstrating effective protection and activation of lipase by the designed nanogels. Our study validates the crucial controls of the size and structure of PE nanogels on enzyme encapsulation and activation, and the revealed findings shall be helpful for designing functional PE nanogels and boosting their applications for enzyme immobilization.

RESUMO

This study has examined how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) may enhance their performance under different settings of information technology (IT) capabilities and corporate entrepreneurship (CE). Established on the dynamic capability view, the researchers have analyzed the connections between IT capabilities and CE, in addition to the performance results of SMEs. The research has explored these novel relationships by utilizing partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with a data sample of 447 SMEs of the manufacturing sector in Pakistan. The findings present that IT capabilities positively influence the market and financial performance of SMEs through the mediating role of CE dimensions. The study uniquely determines the mediating role of dimensional effects of corporate entrepreneurship between IT capabilities and performance outcomes of firms. Thus, the study would enable the management of SMEs to realize the potential of IT-related CE dimensions and their use to improve firms' performance.

RESUMO

Although we use humor in our daily communication, there still needs to cognize its effects on the attitudes and behavior of the employees. Based on benign violation theory (BVT), the study proposes that leader's humor (LH) conveys social information about counter norms. The BVT has been amalgamated with social information processing theory (SIPT) to develop hypotheses assuming the consequences of LH on the attitude and behavior of the employees. This study hypothesizes that even though LH is linked positively with employee creativity via leader-member exchange and psychological empowerment in sequence (blessing path), it may also send information to the employees about the acceptability of norm violation. This perception ultimately leads to power perception and, causes unethical behavior in the series (curse path). Moreover, this study also postulates that leader's self-deprecating humor (LSDH) moderates these indirect effects by enhancing the blessing and reducing the curse, which emerged from LH. Quantitative data of 630 software engineers from software houses based in Pakistan provided support to test the hypotheses. The results demonstrate that LH is a double-edge sword that enhances blessing (creativity) as well as curse (employee unethical behavior), whereas LSDH augments the blessing and throttles back the curse. Theoretical and managerial implications have also been discussed.

RESUMO

Herein, we report a novel renewable pH-responsive starch-based flocculant (CIAT-ST) via etherifying 2-chloro-4,6-isopropylamino-[1,3,5]-triazine (CIAT) onto the starch backbones for decontamination and reuse of highly saline effluents. The obtained CIAT-ST shows a unique pH-sensibility and reversibility in response to a subtle pH change due to a pH-controllable surface charge density of polymer chains. The level of residual CIAT-ST in the solution can be facilely monitored by using UV-vis detection. The dye flocculation performance of CIAT-ST was evaluated by using a batch experiment. The results exhibited that the dye removal was highly dependent on the solution pH (optimal pH was 2), the flocculation equilibrium can be achieved within 5 min, and the maximum flocculation capacity of CIAT-ST for K-2BP and KN-B5 were calculated to be 2452.6 ± 23.9 and 792.7 ± 14.1 mg/g, respectively. The multiple flocculation mechanisms, including charge neutralization, bridging and charge patching, may participate in the flocculation process. Adjustment in pH-mediated hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity switch of flocculant facilitates readily recovery and then sequentially reused three times while retaining satisfying flocculation efficiency. A significant contribution was also confirmed that the highly saline effluents after flocculation and sedimentation were reused in three successive dyeing processes without sacrificing fabric quality (ΔE* < 1) due to relatively low polymer residuals, and the efficiency of salt reuse for consecutive regeneration processes could be achieved above 85%. The present work could provide alternative thoughts for the reutilization of spent flocculant and clarified saline wastewater, which is also an efficient and sustainable strategy for textile wastewater management.

RESUMO

Though the current research stream has provided some risk factors for envy at the workplace, little is still known about the drivers and consequences of envy. Based on Vecchio's theory, this study investigates the ripple effect of the span of supervision on envy. Moreover, it sheds light on the moderating role of meaningful work in their relationship. The data comprising sample size 439 were collected from confrères of four fast food companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Pakistan. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was implemented through SmartPLS 3.3.2 to analyze the measurement and structural relationships. The results demonstrate that a narrow span of supervision will increase work engagement, and reduce instigated incivility via decreasing envy and resource depletion in sequence. Moreover, meaningful work would help regulate the inimical stream of dénouement of envy. Theoretical and practical implications, along with the limitations and future directions, have also been discussed.

RESUMO

Zeolite supported nano iron-nickel bimetallic composite (Z-nZVI-Ni) was prepared using a liquid-phase reduction process. The corresponding surface morphologies and physico-chemical properties of the Z-nZVI-Ni composite were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) adsorption, wide angle X-ray diffractometry (WA-XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated high dispersion of iron and nickel nano particles on the zeolite sheet with an enhanced surface area. Complete destruction of trichloroethene (TCE) and efficient removal of total organic carbon (TOC) were observed by using Z-nZVI-Ni as a heterogeneous catalyst for a Fenton-like oxidation process employing sodium percarbonate (SPC) as an oxidant. The electron spin resonance (ESR) of Z-nZVI-Ni verified the generation and intensity of hydroxyl radicals (OH•). The quantification of OH• elucidated by using p-chlorobenzoic acid, a probe indicator, confirmed the higher intensity of OH•. The transformation products were identified using GC-MS. The slow iron and nickel leaching offered higher stability and better catalytic activity of Z-nZVI-Ni, demonstrating its prospective long term applications in groundwater for TCE degradation.

RESUMO

We report the simple one pot synthesis of iron-silver (FeAg) bimetallic nanoparticles with different compositions on graphene support. The nanoparticles are well dispersed on the graphene sheet as revealed by the TEM, XRD, and Raman spectra. The antibacterial activity of graphene-FeAg nanocomposite (NC) towards Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus was investigated by colony counting method. Graphene-FeAg NC demonstrates excellent antibacterial activity as compared to FeAg bimetallic without graphene. To understand the antibacterial mechanism of the NC, oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the glutathione (GSH) oxidation were investigated in the system. It has been observed that ROS production and GSH oxidation are concentration dependent while the increase in silver content up to 50% generally enhances the ROS production while ROS decreases on further increase in silver content. Graphene loaded FeAg NC demonstrates higher GSH oxidation capacity than bare FeAg bimetallic nanocomposite. The mechanism study suggests that the antibacterial activity is probably due to membrane and oxidative stress produced by the nanocomposites. The possible antibacterial pathway mainly includes the non-ROS oxidative stress (GSH oxidation) while ROS play minor role.

RESUMO

Graphene oxide (GO) and nano-sized zero-valent iron-reduced graphene oxide (nZVI-rGO) composite were prepared. The GO and nZVI-rGO composite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Raman spectroscopy. The size of nZVI was about 6 nm as observed by TEM. The system of nZVI-rGO and persulfate (PS) was used for the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in water, and showed 26.5% more efficiency as compared to nZVI/PS system. The different parameters were studied to determine the efficiency of nZVI-rGO to activate the PS system for the TCE degradation. By increasing the PS amount, TCE removal was also improved while no obvious effect was observed by varying the catalyst loading. Degradation was decreased as the TCE initial concentration was increased from 20 to 100 mg/L. Moreover, when initial solution pH was increased, efficiency deteriorated to 80%. Bicarbonate showed more negative effect on TCE removal among the solution matrix. To better understand the effects of radical species in the system, the scavenger tests were performed. The •SO4(-) and •O2(-) were predominant species responsible for TCE removal. The nZVI-rGO-activated PS process shows potential applications in remediation of highly toxic organic contaminants such as TCE present in the groundwater. Graphical abstract Persulfate activated by reduced graphene oxide and nano-sized zero-valent iron composite can be used for efficient degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) in water.

RESUMO

A bedsore or pressure ulcer is an area of localized damage to the skin and underlying tissue caused by pressure, shear, friction, or a combination of these factors. In countries with a large geriatric population like Canada, this healthcare threat presents a significant risk to hospitalized patients, imposing huge cost on both treatment and care for patients. The role textiles play in the formation and prevention of pressure ulcers is understudied. The fact remains, textiles, such as clothing and bedding, have a considerable influence on factors, such as pressure, shear/friction, and skin hydration, which contribute to skin ulceration. Our work is a pilot study to investigate the role of textile products in the formation and prevention of bedsores. This study began with a survey study at a local long-term care facility, collecting information about incidences of bedsores and the physical conditions of residents. Information was also collected about the textile products that have been used by the residents. Correlations were established between these products and the incidence/severity of bedsores. Immobility of residents was determined to be a significant factor of causing skin lesions and pressure ulcers. Immobility of residents contributes to a prolonged interaction between skin and fabrics and might increase the chances of skin lesions or bedsores.
