BACKGROUND: Disability marginalises a large portion of Bangladesh's population. Global pre- and post-pandemic research evidently states that, this group is more prone to develop mental health problems, which increases the risk of self-harm and suicide among them. It is crucial to comprehend and mitigate the mental health challenges among the people with disabilities which in turn can promote their greater participation in community, and in national socioeconomic development. However, currently there is limited information available, regarding the suicidal behaviour of this group in Bangladesh. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and contributing factors of suicidal behaviour among people with disabilities. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during September and October 2022, among the participants who had selected disabilities, by using probability proportional to size sampling technique across all eight divisions of Bangladesh. A semi-structured questionnaire comprising information about sociodemographic, lifestyle, health; and Suicidal Behaviour Questionnaire-Revision (SBQ-R) was used. The association between the determinants and mental health outcome was investigated using the Chi-square test, and the contributing factors were investigated using the multiple binary logistic regression. RESULT: About 10.45% of the participants reported to have suicidal behaviour (e.g., suicidal ideation, attempts, completed suicide), considering the cut-off score as 7 for the SBQ-R in the study period. Approximately, 40% respondents mentioned suicidal ideation in their lifetime, whereas, 9.01% had suicidal ideation over the past 12 months. Additionally, 8.87% of the person with disabilities, mentioned about their suicidal intent to the family members, and 5.94% reported the likelihood of suicide in the future. Being female, having multiple disabilities, and not being connected with family and friends were found to be significantly associated with suicidal behaviour. CONCLUSION: This research demonstrates the significance of treating mental health issues and expanding accessibility to pre-existing services to lessen the impact of the limitations generated by disabilities. Policymakers can utilize this baseline findings to design large scale research and develop measures for suicide prevention, and management for at-risk groups.

This investigation was done to determine how much zinc (Zn) the stinging catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis, needs in its diet. Five isonitrogenous (34.5% protein) and isolipidic (6.0% lipid) diets were prepared to contain graded levels of Zn (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 mg kg-1), supplied as zinc sulfate (ZnSO4·7H2O), and referred to as Zn0, Zn10, Zn20, Zn30, and Zn40, respectively. A total of 600 fish (initial body weight: 1.41 ± 0.02 g) were stocked in 15 glass aquaria (40 fish/aquarium), each with 180 L water capacity. For ten weeks, each diet was hand fed to three groups of fish twice daily until they appeared satisfied. The highest weight gain and specific growth rate, and lowest feed conversion ratio were recorded in fish fed with a 30 mg Zn kg-1 diet. Zn contents in bone and muscle linearly increased up to 30 mg kg-1 Zn and then remained stable, while iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) contents in bone and muscle had an inverse pattern with the inclusion level of dietary Zn. Increasing dietary Zn levels up to 30 mg kg-1 was found to improve values of hematological parameters such as red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), haemoglobin (Hb), and haematocrit (HCT). These values, however, decreased when the dietary Zn level was further increased. The serum alkaline phosphatase level was the highest in fish fed a diet containing 30 mg kg-1 of Zn. Regression analyses based on weight gain, specific growth rate, and bone and muscle Zn concentrations indicated that the optimum dietary Zn requirement for stinging catfish was in a range of 27.4-36.5 mg kg-1.

INTRODUCTION: Bangladesh is a developing country where 11% of the population has at least one disability, but no community-level mental health service is available. There is limited evidence of the burden of mental health issues and health-seeking behaviour among this population. This study assessed the feasibility of a training intervention for persons with disabilities, where peer support providers provided community-based disability-inclusive mental health services. METHODS: Four stakeholder groups participated in this qualitative study: peer responders (trained persons with disabilities), trainers, representatives of organisations of persons with disabilities and disability-specific organisations, and officials of international and national non-governmental organisations. Two types of qualitative interviews were used to collect data, and thematic analysis techniques were utilised. RESULT: Stakeholders perceived the peer responder training programme as acceptable for persons with disabilities to develop themselves as peer support providers, with potential benefits including increased mental health literacy, ensuring accessible mental health services, and improving the well-being of persons with disabilities. Potential challenges included receiving training and delivering services. Increased training duration, more fieldwork, supervision opportunities, and refresher training were recommended to mitigate training challenges. Financial support and formal community recognition were deemed necessary for training delivery. CONCLUSION: The peer responder training programme was feasible to ensure accessible mental health services for persons with disabilities, build a workforce to screen for mental health conditions, and provide appropriate referrals. A multi-sectoral collaboration of government and non-governmental institutions is recommended to policy advocates to expand the peer responder training programme in the mainstream mental healthcare system.

This study provides an efficient and straightforward approach to eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) by absorption using a calcium oxide (CaO) sorbent derived from chicken eggshells. The sorbent concentration, stirring speed, and contact time were varied. The optimal condition for CO2 removal was a 10% calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) suspension at 600 rpm with 20 min interaction. This optimum condition conferred the ever-highest absorption (98.71%) of CO2 through Ca(OH)2 suspensions from eggshell-derived CaO. X-ray diffraction was used to identify crystallographic phases and optimum conditions revealed calcium carbonate (CaCO3) formation with the highest intensity, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed peaks for the carbonate (CO32-) group, field emission scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphological and structural properties of the sorbent before and after CO2 absorption, and thermogravimetric analysis was performed to understand the reaction mechanism. According to the kinetic analysis, the sorbent can be fully decomposed with a minimum activation energy (Ea) of 89.09 kJ/mol.

This research investigated the antihypertensive effects of tamarind products and compared their potentials based on an animal model's data verified by molecular docking, multitarget interactions, and dynamic simulation assays. GC-MS-characterized tamarind products were administered to cholesterol-induced hypertensive albino rat models. The two-week-intervened animals were dissected to collect their serum and organs and respectively subjected to analyses of their hypertension-linked markers and tissue architectures. The lead biometabolites of tamarinds interacted with eight target receptors in the molecular docking and dynamic simulation studies and with multitarget in the network pharmacological analyses. The results show that the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), C-reactive protein (CRP), troponin I, and lipid profiles were maximally reinstated by the phenolic-enriched ripened sour tamarind extract compared to the sweet one, but the seed extracts had a smaller influence. Among the tamarind's biometabolites, ϒ-sitosterol was found to be the best ligand to interact with the guanylate cyclase receptor, displaying the best drug-likeliness with the highest binding energy, -9.3 Kcal. A multitargeted interaction-based degree algorithm and a phylogenetic tree of pathways showed that the NR3C1, REN, PPARG, and CYP11B1 hub genes were consistently modulated by ϒ-sitosterol to reduce hypertension and related risk factors. The dynamic simulation study showed that the P-RMSD values of ϒ-sitosterol-guanylate cyclase were stable between 75.00 and 100.00 ns at the binding pocket. The findings demonstrate that ripened sour tamarind extract may be a prospective antihypertensive nutraceutical or supplement target affirmed through advanced preclinical and clinical studies.

Introduction Infection with SARS-CoV-2 begins in the lower respiratory tract, but COVID-19 often involves the renal system, resulting in serum electrolyte imbalance. Monitoring serum electrolyte levels and parameters of liver and kidney function is essential to understand disease prognosis. Objectives This study aimed to determine the effect of imbalances in serum electrolytes and other parameters on COVID-19 severity. Material and method This retrospective study comprised 241 patients, ages 14 years and older, including 186 patients who were moderately affected and 55 who were categorized as severely affected by COVID-19. Serum electrolytes (sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and chloride (Cl-)) and biomarkers of kidney and liver function (creatinine and alanine aminotransferase (ALT)) were measured and correlated with disease severity. This research was conducted among admitted patients of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital designated into two groups based on retrospective hospital records. Individuals with moderate illness had evidence of lower respiratory tract infection (cough, cold, breathless, etc.) during clinical assessment or imaging (chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan of the lungs) and have an oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) ≥ 94% on room air at sea level. The severely ill group involved individuals with SpO2 ≤94% on room air at sea level and respiratory rate ≥ 30 breaths/minute, and critically ill patients are those who needed mechanical ventilation or required intensive care unit (ICU) care. This categorization was based on the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Treatment Guidelines (https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/about-the-guidelines/whats-new/). Results Average Na+ and creatinine increased by 2.30 parts (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.20, 4.81, P = 0.041) and 0.35 units (95% CI = 0.03, 0.68, P = 0.043) in severe cases compared with moderate cases. Older participants had relatively Na+ lowered to -0.06 parts (95% CI = -0.12, -0.001, P = 0.045), significant Cl- reduction by 0.09 units (95% CI = -0.14, -0.04, P = 0.001), and ALT by 0.47 units (95% CI = -0.88, -0.06, P = 0.024), whereas serum creatinine was increased by 0.01 parts (95% CI = 0.001, 0.02, P = 0.024). The creatinine and ALT of COVID-19 participants were significantly higher in males by 0.34 units and 23.2 units, respectively, compared with females. In severe COVID-19 cases compared with moderate cases, the risks of hypernatremia, elevated chloride levels, and elevated serum creatinine levels were increased by 2.83-fold (95% CI = 1.26, 6.36, P = 0.012), 5.37-fold (95% CI = 1.90, 15.3, P = 0.002), and 2.00-fold (95% CI = 1.08, 4.31, P = 0.039), respectively. Conclusion Serum electrolyte and biomarker levels can serve as good indicators of the condition and disease prognosis of patients with COVID-19. Our purpose in this study was to determine the association between serum electrolyte imbalance and disease severity. We collected data from ex post facto hospital records and did not intend to assess the mortality rate. Consequently, this study expects that the prompt diagnosis of electrolyte disparity or disturbance possibly minimizes COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality.

Objective: Here, we developed and tested the efficacy of a vaccination protocol based on a commercially available live attenuated Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum (Salmonella gallinarum) in layer chickens. Materials and Methods: 50 layer chickens of 16 weeks age were obtained and divided into two groups (n = 25), control and vaccinated. The vaccinated group received Salmonella vaccine at 0.2 ml/bird, s/c route at 16, 18, 30, and 42 weeks of age. At 21 weeks of age, birds from both groups were challenged with S. gallinarum orally at 4 × 107 colony-forming unit per bird. Results: Both rapid serum plate agglutination and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay demonstrated a rising rate of seroconversion in vaccinated birds across the study period, with a 4% positive rate at 18 weeks, 56% at 21 weeks, 60% at 30 weeks, and 64% at each time point of 42 and 54 weeks. The vaccine showed 100% clinical protection and reduced the Salmonella shedding in the feces and eggs of the challenged birds. On the contrary, the unvaccinated challenged birds showed clinical signs and lesions typical of Salmonella infections with morbidity and mortality rates of 36% and 20%, respectively, and had high rates of Salmonella shedding in feces and eggs. Conclusions: With the proposed vaccination schedule Salmonella shedding was prevented, and a high seroconversion was confirmed. To prevent Salmonella infections in laying flocks, a 3-month interval immunization program is advised starting at the pre-laying stage.

Since 2016, Promotion of Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Bangladesh (PHRPB) has been working to include people with psychosocial disabilities in their community-based inclusive development work, and to increase access to formal mental health care. Field visits were carried out to PHRPBD catchment areas in Dhaka and Chittagong for a case study on the integration of mental health into community-based rehabilitation (CBR). This paper synthesizes the results of twenty-five semi-structured interviews carried out as part of the case study. Participants included people with psychosocial disabilities, intellectual disabilities, epilepsy or other cognitive impairments and their carers as needed. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and translated from Bangla to English, then hand-coded for content analysis. Results were organized into five overarching categories: (1) explanatory models, (2) help-seeking behaviors, (3) impact of services, (4) challenges and barriers to improving mental health, (5) recommendations of users and carers. Respondents either had no explanation for why service users had become unwell or attributed it to physically and/or emotionally traumatic events or supernatural causes. Before attending PHRPBD's mental health services, most had visited formal or informal health care providers, often with disappointing results. Despite positive feedback on PHRPBD's services, participants identified ongoing challenges. Stigma, discrimination and human rights abuses persist and are compounded by issues of gender inequality. Participants also identified barriers and made recommendations specific to the program itself, mainly regarding accessibility (e.g., cost, distance, frequency). This study adds to the limited body of qualitative research on mental health in Bangladesh, reinforcing previous findings on explanatory models and health-seeking behaviors while providing new insights into the impact of a CBR program in this context. Feedback of service users and carers suggests that CBR may indeed be a useful approach to increase access to services in Bangladesh for people with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities, epilepsy or other cognitive impairments. However, this program is not without its limitations, some of which are the product of broader issues within the mental health system and others of the social and cultural context. More research is needed to formally evaluate this and other CBR programs in the Global South.

Chlorella ellipsoidea is a freshwater green microalga that has great prospect for the sustainable development of aquaculture industry. Microalgae require optimal lighting conditions for efficient photosynthesis. The key to cost-effective algal biomass production is to optimize algae growth conditions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of various wavelengths viz. white (380-750 nm), green (510 nm), blue (475 nm), and red (650 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on the growth, pigment content (chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, and ß-carotene), and proximate composition of C. ellipsoidea with a photoperiod of 12 h:12 h light: dark cycle under indoor environmental conditions. C. ellipsoidea was cultured in Bold's Basal Medium for 18 days. The cell density (125.36×105 cells ml-1), cell dry weight (58.9 ± 4.57 mg L-1), optical density (1.66 ± 0.08 g L-1), chlorophyll-a (7.31 ± 0.04 µg ml-1), chlorophyll-b (2.73 ± 0.13 µg ml-1), and ß-carotene (0.39 ± 0.04 µg ml-1) content of C. ellipsoidea were significantly (P < 0.05) higher at 15th-day when cultured under blue LED light exposure. Significantly lower growth and nutritional values were obtained under red LED light exposure compared to the control and other LEDs spectra. In Pearson correlation analysis, the cell density and cell dry weight values showed a strong positive correlation with the values of pigment contents of C. ellipsoidea in all the treatments. The LEDs light spectra showed significant effects on proximate composition of C. ellipsoidea. Protein and lipid contents of C. ellipsoidea were significantly higher in blue LED growth conditions compared to white, green, and red LEDs. C. ellipsoidea cells were 3-7.04 µm in size and the maximum area of the cell was 38.94 µm2 in blue LED treatment. Results of this study demonstrated that blue LED light spectra was the most suitable condition to induce nutritionally rich biomass production of C. ellipsoidea, which can be used as a potential source of fish feed towards sustainable aquaculture.

Gastrointestinal (GI) parasites are one of the most widely recognized health problems of buffalo calves in Bangladesh. The study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of GI parasitic infestation in buffalo calves at Sylhet division of Bangladesh. Fecal samples of 200 buffalo calves under 1 year of age (76 males and 124 females) were collected from Sylhet, Maulvibazar, Habiganj, and Sunamganj districts, and from each of the four regions, 50 samples were collected. Samples were examined through simple flotation, sedimentation, and McMaster techniques. The overall prevalence of GI parasites in Sylhet division was 65.5%. Among the samples, the highest prevalence of GI parasite was found in Sylhet (78%), followed by Sunamganj (68%), Maulvibazar (66%), and Habiganj (50%) districts. Among the identified GI parasites, the highest prevalence was observed in case of Neoascaris vitulorum (26.5%). The highest prevalence of GI parasite was observed in summer (69.84%), followed by rainy (69.62%) and winter (55.17%) seasons. Males and females were almost equally susceptible to GI parasitic infestation. Older calves (9-12 months, 77.14%) were most vulnerable to GI parasites. Egg per gram (EPG) of feces was additionally counted in the current study to know the severity of infestation. The range of EPG varied from 50 to 900 among the identified parasites. Among them, the highest count was found in the case of Neoascaris vitulorum (100-900). It may be concluded that aggregated policies and actions need to be taken to control the GI parasitic infestation in buffalo calves at Sylhet Division and elsewhere in developing countries like Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the experiment was to examine the effect of different food sources on the growth and reproduction performances of an epigeic earthworm Perionyx excavatus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The experiment was carried out in 18 cylindrical plastic containers for 10 weeks. The study was designed with six treatments, each having three replicates. In control treatment (T1), cow dung was used as the only food source for the earthworm. In another five treatments, water hyacinth (T2), chopped banana plant trunk (T3), vegetable scrap (T4), paddy straw (T5), and sugarcane bagasse (T6) were used as food sources with cow dung as bedding material. RESULTS: The maximum weight gain of earthworm P. excavatus was 3,294.7 ± 4.5 mg for the food staff of vegetable scrap (T4). Earthworm P. excavatus fed with chopped banana plant trunk (T3) showed a very similar weight gain of 3,243.7 ± 3.8 mg. On the contrary, the minimum weight gain was 1,799.7 ± 3.5 mg for the food staff of paddy straw (T5). The maximum cocoon number of 137.33 ± 6.46 mg was observed in T3, whereas a minimum number of 36.67 ± 4.16 mg in T1. The highest number of hatchlings (12.33 ± 0.88 mg) was recorded in treatment T3, whereas the least number of hatchling (5.00 ± 0.58 mg) was observed in T1. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that, among the six different food sources, chopped banana plant trunk was preferable food source to the earthworm for growth and reproduction.

In this work the origin of permselectivity in dense silica films which possess a pore structure with pore sizes commensurate with the molecular size of the diffusing gas species is investigated. Much of the recently reported work in this field has involved the development of composite membrane films, and while it is generally assumed that the transport process of the gas species within the selective layer of these films is activated in nature, there are anomalies with this simplified picture. In this paper a new model is developed which, for the first time, explains the permselective behavior of the thin selective coatings ubiquitous to membrane separation processes. The model involves the existence of two primary transport domains within the solid film, one of which rapidly conducts the permeating gas (under non-Fickian conditions), while the second domain involves a slow diffusion mode characterized by normal Fickian transport. To validate the model, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted for diffusion of a number of simple gases (He, N(2), and CO(2)) within silica glasses over a range of solid densities. The silica media employed in these studies are based on a novel approach developed in this work for the construction of three-dimensionally periodic atomistic structures of silica of arbitrary density in which network bond connectivity is ensured. The results obtained from this work are in qualitative agreement with experimental observations and confirm the existence of dual mode transport which is central to the interpretation of the permselectivity in composite membranes systems.

To distinguish thin deposited film characteristics clearly from the influence of substrate morphological properties, the growth mechanism and the macroscale and nanoscale properties of nanoporous SiO(2) films deposited on nonporous silica (SiO(2)) substrates from chemical precursors Si(OH)(4) and TEOS (tetraethoxysilane) via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition are the primary targets of this study. This work employs a kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulation method coupled to the Metropolis Monte Carlo method to relax the strained silica structure. The influence of the deposition temperature (473, 673, and 873 K) on the properties of the SiO(x) layers is addressed via analysis of the film growth rates, density profiles of the deposited thin films, pore size distributions, carbon depth profiles (with respect to TEOS), and voidage analysis for layers of different thicknesses (8-18 nm). A comparison of simulation with experimental results is also carried out.

Flood management decision-making problems are often associated with multiple objectives and multiple stakeholders. The challenge remains on how to obtain the diversified opinions of a large number of stakeholders where uncertainty plays a major role. In response to this challenge, a methodology has been proposed to capture the views of multiple stakeholders using fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic. Three possible forms of individual stakeholders' input, scale (crisp), linguistic (fuzzy), and conditional (fuzzy), are analyzed to obtain the aggregated input by using Fuzzy Expected Value. The methodology is applied to flood management in the Red River Basin, Manitoba, Canada. The outputs derived from the three different input types show good correlation. Thus, the proposed methodology shows alternative ways of soliciting the opinion of a large number of stakeholders and aggregating those opinions for use in multi-objective decision making.
