RESUMO

Wood-derived hydrogels possess satisfactory longitudinal strength but lack excellent swelling resistance and dry shrinkage resistance when achieving high anisotropy. In this study, we displayed the preparation of highly dimensional stable wood/polyacrylamide hydrogels (wood/PAM-Al3+). The alkali-treated wood retains lignin as the skeleton of the hydrogel. Second, Al ions were added to the metal coordination with lignin. Finally, by employing free radical polymerization, we construct a conductive electronic network using polyaniline within the wood/PAM-Al3+ matrix to create the flexible sensor. This approach leverages lignin's integrated structure within the middle lamella to provide enhanced swelling resistance and stronger binding strength in the transverse direction. Furthermore, coordination between lignin and Al ions improves the mechanical strength of the wood hydrogel. Polyaniline provides stable linear pressure and temperature responses. The wood/PAM-Al3+ exhibits a transverse swelling ratio of 3.90% while achieving a longitudinal tensile strength of 20.5 MPa. This high-strength and high-stability sensor is capable of monitoring macroscale human behavior. Therefore, this study presents a simple yet innovative strategy for constructing tough hydrogels while also establishing an alternative pathway for exploring lignin networks in new functional materials development.

RESUMO

Petroleum-derived formaldehyde resin adhesives are serious hazards to human health and depend on limited resources. Abundant, cheap and renewable biomass materials are expected to replace them. However, the contradictory mechanisms of high mechanical strength and fracture toughness affect the use of bioadhesives. Herein, a biomimetic soybean meal (SM) adhesive inspired by the structure of insect cuticles and shell pearl layer was proposed. Specifically, chitosan (CS@DA) modified 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DA, rich in catechol moiety) was anchored on molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS2) to construct a biomimetic structure with copper hydroxide and SM substrate (SM-MoS2/CS@DA-Cu). Schiff base, ionic, and hydrogen bonding strengthened the cohesion of the adhesive. The ordered alternating stacking "brick-mortar" structure stimulated the lamellar sliding and crack deflection of MoS2, synergistically reinforcing the toughness. Compared to SM adhesive (0.57 MPa and 0.148 J), the wet shear strength and adhesion work of the SM-MoS2/CS@DA-Cu were 1.68 MPa and 0.867 J, with 194.7 % and 485.8 % increases, respectively. The multiple antimicrobial effects of CS@DA, Schiff base, and Cu2+ increased the applicability period of the adhesive to 40 days. The adhesive also displayed favorable water resistance and flame retardancy. Therefore, this peculiar and efficient biomimetic structural design inspired the development of multi-functional composites.

RESUMO

Developing multifunctional adhesives with exceptional cold-pressing strength, water resistance, toughness, and mildew resistance remains challenging. Herein, inspired by oysters, a multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid soybean meal (SM)-based adhesive was fabricated by incorporating amino-modified carbon dots functionalized silica nanoparticles (CDs@SiO2) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) into SM matrix. DCS effectively enhanced the interface interactions of organic-inorganic phases and the rigid nanofillers CDs@SiO2 uniformly dispersed in the SM matrix, which provided energy dissipation to improve the adhesive's toughness. Owing to the stiff skeleton structure and enhanced crosslinking density, the crosslinker-modified SM (MSM)/DCS/CDs@SiO2-2 wood adhesive exhibited outstanding cold-pressing strength (0.74 MPa), wet shear strength (1.36 MPa), and long-term water resistance (49 d). Additionally, the resultant adhesive showed superior antimildew and antibacterial properties benefiting from the introduction of DCS. Intriguingly, the fluorescent properties endowed by carbon dots further broadened the application of adhesives for realizing security testing. This study opens a new pathway for the synthesis of multifunctional biomass adhesives in industrial and household applications.

RESUMO

Biomimetic flexible electronics for E-skin have received increasing attention, due to their ability to sense various movements. However, the development of smart skin-mimic material remains a challenge. Here, a simple and effective approach is reported to fabricate super-tough, stretchable, and self-healing conductive hydrogel consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Ti3 C2 Tx MXene nanosheets, and polypyrrole (PPy) (PMP hydrogel). The MXene nanosheets and Fe3+ serve as multifunctional cross-linkers and effective stress transfer centers, to facilitate a considerable high conductivity, super toughness, and ultra-high stretchability (elongation up to 4300%) for the PMP hydrogel with. The hydrogels also exhibit rapid self-healing and repeatable self-adhesive capacity because of the presence of dynamic borate ester bond. The flexible capacitive strain sensor made by PMP hydrogel shows a relatively broad range of strain sensing (up to 400%), with a self-healing feature. The sensor can precisely monitor various human physiological signals, including joint movements, facial expressions, and pulse waves. The PMP hydrogel-based supercapacitor is demonstrated with a high capacitance retention of ≈92.83% and a coulombic efficiency of ≈100%.

RESUMO

Bioplastics are considered as potential alternatives to non-renewable and non-biodegradable petroleum-based plastics. Inspired by ionic and amphiphilic properties of mussel protein, we proposed a versatile and facile strategy for the fabrication of a high-performance chitosan (CS) composite film. This technique incorporates a cationic hyperbranched polyamide (QHB) and a supramolecular system based on the lignosulphonate (LS)-functionalized cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) (LS@CNF) hybrids. The cationic QHB was synthesized by a one-step process from hyperbranched polyamide and quaternary ammonium salt. Meanwhile, the functional LS@CNF hybrids act as a well-dispersed and rigid cross-linked domain in CS matrix. Owing to the interconnected hyperbranched and enhanced supramolecular network, the toughness and tensile strength of the CS/QHB/LS@CNF film simultaneously increased to 19.1 MJ/m3 and 50.4 MPa, 170.2 % and 72.6 % higher than the pristine CS film. Additionally, the functional QHB/LS@CNF hybrids endow the films with superior antibacterial activity, water resistance, UV shielding, and thermal stability. This bioinspired strategy provides a novel and sustainable method for the production of multifunctional CS films.

RESUMO

Sustainable biomass materials are promising for low-cost wearable piezoresistive pressure sensors, but these devices are still produced with time-consuming manufacturing processes and normally display low sensitivity and poor mechanical stability at low-pressure regimes. Here, an aqueous MXene ink obtained by simply ball-milling is developed as a conductive modifier to fabricate the multiresponsive bidirectional bending actuator and compressible MXene-plant fiber sponge (MX-PFS) for durable and wearable pressure sensors. The MX-PFS is fabricated by physically foaming MXene ink and plant fibers. It possesses a lamellar porous structure composed of one-dimensional (1D) MXene-coated plant fibers and two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets, which significantly improves the compression capacity and elasticity. Consequently, the encapsulated piezoresistive sensor (PRS) exhibits large compressible strain (60%), excellent mechanical durability (10 000 cycles), low detection limit (20 Pa), high sensitivity (435.06 kPa-1), and rapid response time (40 ms) for practical wearable applications.

RESUMO

An acoustic diaphragm is a crucial component that regulates sound quality in earphones and loudspeakers. Natural wood with inherent good acoustic resonance and vibration spectrum is widely used in sound devices. However, using natural wood to produce an acoustic diaphragm is still a big challenge because making ultra-thin wood is hard and it warps easily. Therefore, this study introduces a new method for preparing ultra-thin wood acoustic diaphragms less than 10 µm in thickness, relying on delignification, sulfonation, and densifying techniques. The innovative sulfonation process increased the intermolecular hydrogen bond force, which significantly improved the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the wood diaphragm, up to 195 MPa and 27.1 GPa, respectively. Compared with the commonly used diaphragms in the market, this wood diaphragm exhibits an excellent specific dynamic elastic modulus up to 95.1 GPa/g cm3, indicating better acoustic properties. Also, the resonance frequency was up to 1240 Hz, 4.5 times higher than the titanium diaphragm among high-end products. Besides, the drying shrinkage rate of the ultra-thin wood diaphragm is only 1.2%, indicating excellent dimensional stability. This high-quality wood acoustic diaphragm has a very high application prospect and outstanding attributes for promoting the development of acoustic devices. Moreover, the reaction reagent can be recycled after preparation, and the selected reagents are green and environmentally friendly.

RESUMO

Rapid and efficient clean-up of viscous crude oil spills is still a global challenge due to its high viscous and poor flowability at room temperature. The hydrophobic/oleophilic absorbents with three-dimensional porous structure have been considered as a promising candidate to handle oil spills. However, they still have limited application in recovering the high viscous oil. Inspired by the viscosity of crude oil depended on the temperature, a solar-heated ink modified plant fiber sponge (PFS@GC) is fabricated via a simple and environmentally friendly physical foaming strategy combined with in-situ ink coating treatment. After wrapping by the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the modified PFS@GC (PFS@GC@PDMS) exhibits excellent compressibility, high hydrophobic (141° in water contact angle), solar absorption (> 96.0%), and oil absorptive capacity (12.0-27.8 g/g). Benefiting from the favorable mechanical property and photothermal conversion capacity, PFS@GC@PDMS is demonstrated as a high-performance absorbent for crude oil clean-up and recovery. In addition, PFS@GC@PDMS can also be applied in a continuous absorption system for uninterrupted recovering of oil spills on the water surface. The proposed solar-heated absorbent design provides a new opportunity for exploring biomass in addressing large-scale oil spill disasters.

RESUMO

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with good chemical resistance, excellent mechanical properties, and formaldehyde-free shows great potentials in the wood industry. In this study, the mechanical strength, thermostability, dynamic thermomechanical property, and interfacial bonding of bamboo particle boards (BPBs) made from UPR adhesives with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as the coupling agent were explored. The results showed that covalent bonds were formed among TDI, bamboo particles, and UPR, which could significantly enhance the mechanical strength. The internal bonding strength, modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rupture of treated BPBs were 1.36, 3010, and 19.6 MPa with the increment of 1250, 514, and 833%, respectively, compared to the control samples. Also, the thickness swelling rate of the BPB was 4.6%, much lower than that of the control, with a decrease of 92%. The thermostability of the treated BPB was also improved. As a result, the BPB using UPR as the adhesive and TDI as the coupling agent shows better usability, higher efficiency, and excellent mechanical strength.

RESUMO

Aluminum phosphate (AP) shows great potential to replace formaldehyde-based adhesives in the wood industry, except for its weak hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength. This study chose PVA as an AP modifier to prepare a PVA-AP organic-inorganic hybrid adhesive (PAP). The preparation, bonding mechanism and heat resistant property of PAP were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result showed that covalent bonds between PVA and AP were built. The mechanical properties of PAP improved remarkably; the dry and wet bonding strength are 2.28 and 0.79 MPa with 15.2% and 690% increment, respectively, compared to the control samples. The thermostabilities of PAP and plywood samples were improved. In conclusion, PVA could effectively improve the hygroscopic resistance and low wet bonding strength of AP adhesives.

RESUMO

Solar steam generation as a promising solar energy conversion technology has attracted considerable interest in achieving seawater desalination and water purification. Although wood with fast water transportation and excellent heat localization has drawn particular interest in regard to its application for solar steam generation, challenges still remain in terms of its complicated processing techniques and relatively low efficiency. Here, we propose a facile, cost-efficient, and scalable brushing method to prepare an aluminophosphate-treated wood (Wood@AlP) solar steam generation device. The aluminophosphate compound deposited on the wood surface can not only be considered as the Lewis acid catalyst capable of accelerating the formation of the carbon layer but also provide an aluminophosphate layer with a hierarchical porous structure, which is beneficial for broad solar absorption and vapor escape. On the other hand, benefiting from the natural hydrophilicity, low thermal conductivity, and excellent water transportation of wood, the obtained Wood@AlP device can float on seawater and exhibit a high solar thermal efficiency of 90.8% with a net evaporation rate of 1.423 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination.

RESUMO

Fungi play a considerable role in the deterioration of lignocellulose materials, as their activities either affect the esthetic properties or lead to decay of the host materials. The new generation of organic-inorganic preservatives, which are copper-based but chrome- and arsenic-free, is a subject of many research works. Mildew fungus prevention, treatment of affected materials, and their successive conservation are essential to the woodworkers. To prevent degradation and prolong the service life of wood, a sol-gel organic-inorganic procedure was employed in this study. Aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3), copper sulfate (CuSO4·5H2O), and boric acid (H3BO3) were introduced into phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and water glass as an antimildew agent, with different treatment concentrations (0.7, 1.4, and 2%). Wood was inoculated with Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma viride after new treatment based on the inorganic preservative. The changes in wood surface, structural chemistry, and the crystalline structure of the treated wood were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The growth of the two mildew fungi showed distribution, and evidence of mildew covering only the untreated wood surfaces and an increase in the crystallinity of wood was observed after the process. The study suggests that the two mildew fungi investigated herein could be prevented by sol-gel coating with a Si-Al-Cu-P antimildew agent.
