RESUMO

AIM: The study aimed to analyze the morphological and anatomical variations of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and their association with age and gender among the subpopulation of the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CBCT records of 401 patients referred to the Department of Radiology between January 2020 and July 2023 were randomly selected in the retrospective cross-sectional study. The anatomical characteristics such as the length of the NPC, and the superior and inferior width of the canal, were analyzed. In the sagittal and axial planes, the morphological variants of the shape of the NPC were also investigated. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software was used for statistical analyses at a 5% significance level. RESULTS: The study examined the CBCT images of 219 females (54.6%) and 182 males (45.4%) with an overall mean age of 40.17 ± 2.31 years. The overall length of the NPC and superior and inferior canal width were 13.86 ± 2.68 mm, 3.4 ± 1.42 mm, and 4.07 ± 2.06 mm, respectively. Independent t-test revealed that the males had a statistically significant larger superior (3.62 ± 1.78 mm) and inferior canal width (4.33 ± 1.79 mm). In terms of gender, the Chi-square test revealed a statistically significant association (p < 0.01) between the morphological shape of the NPC in the axial and sagittal planes. The heart-shaped (51.4%) and cone-shaped canals (34.2%) were the most frequently recorded NPC in the axial and sagittal planes, respectively. Pearson's correlation found a statistically significant positive relationship (p < 0.05) between the superior and inferior canal width and the canal length. Spearman's correlation revealed a statistically highly significant correlation between the NPC shape in the sagittal plane and gender (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The study findings revealed a statistically significant difference in the anatomical and morphological traits of the NPC in the axial and sagittal planes based on gender. The effect of age and gender was found to exhibit significant differences with the NPC parameters. The heart-shaped canal in the axial plane and the cone-shaped canal in the sagittal plane were more prevalent in the study sample. A three-dimensional (3D) examination of the NPC will be crucial to avert challenging circumstances prior to surgical treatments in the anterior maxilla. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The NPC is a long, narrow canal that can take up to 58% of the buccal bone plate width, and an accurate 3D anatomic illustration of the NPC allows for reliable surgical planning and dental implant placement.

RESUMO

Introduction: Dentists must employ locally delivered antimicrobial agents (LDAs) in a way that is in line with current recommendations from the scientific literature and the guidelines set by professional organizations. Considering the dearth of research on this topic, it is not known what strategies are adapted when using LDAs in their periodontal practice. So, the purpose of this research was to investigate how LDAs are utilized by dental professionals in their distinct periodontal practices. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used a closed-ended questionnaire. Dental professionals received electronic copies of the eight-item questionnaire. The questionnaire assessed the relevance of LDAs, how frequently they are used, which ones are used most, the number of patients who receive them, their understanding of pharmacological activities, and their knowledge of current treatment guidelines. The questionnaire's validity and reliability were evaluated before being presented to participants. Using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), the input was analyzed. Results: A total of 120 dental professionals, with an average age of 34.7 years, answered the questionnaire. Half of these individuals have no history of ever using LDAs. The most frequent LDA used in its different forms was chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), followed by tetracycline. The majority of participants placed LDAs (80%) in less than 10 patients. Less than half acknowledged the different LDAs and their pharmacological activities. Not even 70% of clinicians were up-to-date on the current European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) guidelines. None of the participants discounted the significance of LDAs in periodontal care. Conclusion: Dental professionals regard LDAs as essential to periodontal therapy. Yet, they lacked knowledge about general, pharmacological, and clinical aspects. The patient experience with LDAs was limited by an inappropriate deployment pattern.

RESUMO

Nowadays, smartphone applications are widely used in different areas of life, including medical science. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a smartphone application of oral hygiene instructions (OHI) on periodontal health compared to the traditional chairside OHI. All the participants (n = 39) were divided into two groups: control group and test group. Participants of the control group were given verbal OHI and participants of the test group were asked to use a smartphone application to upkeep their oral habits. The gingival index (GI) and Quigley-Hein Turesky modification index (QHTMI) were used for scoring the plaque accumulation at baseline and after one month of the periodontal treatment. A paired t-test and an independent t-test were performed to compare the mean of GI and QHTMI between intra-group and inter-group, respectively. The paired t-test showed significant differences in GI and QHTMI improvement after one month in both groups. Moreover, the independent t-test showed no significant differences between the two groups. However, the test group showed a lower mean score in GI and QHTMI assessments compared to the control group. Smartphone applications in oral health applications did not exhibit any superiority in periodontal health over the traditional OHI method in the current study.

RESUMO

This study aimed to evaluate the association between periodontitis and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) via cone-beam-computed tomography (CBCT) using the Lund-Mackay staging system. CBCT images from different departments of the school of dentistry, at Prince Sattam University were evaluated for the presence of rhinosinusitis. All the CBCT scans were exposed for multiple indications, and no patients had a scan exposed solely for this study. The Lund-Mackay staging system was used to measure the CRS in the CBCT. Descriptive statistics for the frequencies and percentages were used to summarize the data. Logistic regression was used to examine the associations between periodontitis and CRS. Each variable was assessed individually by using multivariable analysis. Collinearity issues among the variables were solved to select a limited set of factors using a stepwise variable selection procedure. A total of 399 CBCT images were included in the current research. Logistic regression showed that only gender was significantly associated (p = 0.0001) with the presence of CRS. However, a stepwise variable selection procedure included gender and bone loss as significantly associated with CRS. No significant difference was observed between unilateral vs. bilateral CRS in gender, bone loss, medical status, and periodontitis. However, only gender showed a significant difference in both bilateral vs. no CRS and unilateral vs. no CRS. Periodontitis is not associated with CRS. However, gender has a significant influence on CRS.

RESUMO

Hemangioma is frequently seen benign tumour of vascular origin, typed into capillary and cavernous hemangiomas based on the nature of vessels in the lesions. Capillary hemangioma is a collection of small capillary-size vessels and shows lobule formation. Cavernous hemangioma is formed by the large dilated vessels and it can reach a large size. The hemangioma can cause aesthetic and functional problems when it is located on the tongue. Several treatment modalities including sclerotherapy, embolisation, laser surgery, and cryosurgery have been described. Here, we are reporting a case of a 12-year boy diagnosed with a hemangioma on the left lateral border of the tongue using ultrasonography with color Doppler application and treated non-surgically with sclerotherapy and cryotherapy. Key Words: Color Doppler ultrasonography, Cryotherapy, Hemangioma, Sclerotherapy, tongue.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: In current clinical dental practice radiographic imaging plays a major role in exploring the relationship between the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and maxillary posterior teeth root apices, especially when there is an involvement of pathology in the periapical area that may lead to infectious, inflammatory or traumatic changes in the maxillary sinus (MS). It is also essential for exact implant placement, and therapeutic and surgical plans. The prevalence of different forms of anatomic relationship of the MSF to posterior root apices from one population to another is large. Hence the current research was conceived to evaluate the horizontal and vertical relationship forms of posterior root apices to the MSF in the Al-Qassim population of Saudi Arabia using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: To conduct the study, a total of 200 patients' data (100 male and 100 female) were taken from the archives. The linear distances of the root apices to the MSF were measured for maxillary posterior teeth. On cross-sectional CBCT images, the Kwak et al. criteria were used to assess the horizontal and vertical relationships between the root apices of maxillary posterior teeth and the MSF. RESULTS: The mean distance between the apices of the maxillary second premolar ranged from 4.63 mm to 6.49 mm. The mean value of the distance between the apices of the posterior teeth and the MSF had a range of 0.68 ± 0.39 mm on the disto-buccal root (DBR) of the maxillary right second molar to 3.93 ± 1.26 mm on the palatal root (PR) of the maxillary left first molar. A similar result was observed in the maxillary second molar DBR in the male group (0.68 ± 1.17 mm) and the female group (0.69 ± 1.17 mm). The most frequently observed vertical relations were type 2 and type 2H horizontal relations. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that maxillary molar roots show greater proximity with the MSF when compared with premolars, and that the type 2 vertical and type 2H horizontal distribution suggests that the anatomy of each tooth and the maxillary sinus floor should be evaluated by CBCT prior to treatment planning.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Public mental health concerns have been raised during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of this study was to assess the psychological impact of the pandemic on dental students in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among dental students from different universities in Saudi Arabia selected using 2-stage cluster sampling. The psychological impact was assessed using the validated Arabic version of the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Item questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS software. The Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used as appropriate. A chi-squared test was used to compare the proportions between the sociodemographic data and logistic regression analysis to identify variables associated with the student's responses. RESULTS: The internal consistency of the scale was excellent (0.954). A total of 697 dental students participated voluntarily in the study; their mean age was 21.76 ± 1.859 years, and 54.7% were female. The majority (96.1%) were single, and 69.4% lived in a household of > 5 persons. Significant differences in mental health outcomes were evident for gender, university, and survey time. Elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and stress were recorded among 60.64%, 37.02%, and 34.92%, respectively, of the students. Females, students who lived alone, and junior students were more likely to experience psychological problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of elevated levels of depression, anxiety and stress among dental students highlights the need for psychological empowerment strategies involving institutional counseling services.

RESUMO

Pigmentation of gingiva not just has an impact on esthetics but also creates psychological negativity. Although a wide array of depigmentation techniques are available to manage this condition, there is a scarcity of literature that guides clinicians to choose the most appropriate technique. Hence, the aim of this review is to evaluate the available depigmentation therapeutic modalities with an emphasis on their merits and demerits. The databases of MEDLINE and Cochrane databases of systematic reviews were searched to collect relevant scientific literature. Cryosurgery followed by lasers has been reported to be the superior techniques with better esthetic results and low rate of recurrence. However, further randomized controlled longitudinal studies are warranted to elaborate the efficiency and effectiveness of available techniques.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain is a potential adverse side effect of oral surgeries, and attempts should be made to prevent or minimize it. This study compares efficacy of preemptive ibuprofen and dexamethasone protocols for pain prevention or control after surgical implant placement. METHODS: This prospective, double-masked, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 117 patients with planned dental implant placement. Patients were assigned to receive one of three different protocols: 1) 600 mg ibuprofen 1 hour before surgery and another 600 mg 6 hours after the first dose; 2) 4 mg dexamethasone 1 hour before surgery and another 4 mg 6 hours after the first dose; or 3) placebo. Rescue medication (1,000 mg acetaminophen) was made available to each patient, and they were instructed to take it as necessary. Pain intensity was evaluated via a 101-point numeric rating scale and a visual analog scale, and discomfort was evaluated using a four-point verbal rating scale hourly for the first 8 hours after surgery and three times daily for the following 3 days. RESULTS: Ibuprofen and dexamethasone significantly reduced pain (Kruskal-Wallis; P <0.05) up to 3 days after surgery and discomfort (P <0.05) up to 2 days after surgery compared with placebo treatment. Both treatments reduced the number of painkillers taken and increased time before the first painkiller was taken (P <0.01). CONCLUSION: Steroidal dexamethasone is as effective as non-steroidal ibuprofen for preventing or controlling postoperative pain and discomfort after surgical implant placement.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral health is an important component of general health and is associated with the development of a healthy personality. The malocclusion has been shown to affects oral health, leads to increased prevalence of dental caries and may result in temporo-mandibular joint disorders. Hence, the present study was conducted to evaluate the malocclusion in subjects reporting for orthodontic treatment among Saudi population in Asser region by using Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was designed. A total of 162 study samples was participated in the study. A pre-designed proforma was used to evaluate various parameters determining malocclusion and DAI was used. RESULTS: The mean age of 27.07 ± 9.76 years. The mean DAI score of the study participants was 27.27 ± 13.83. Maximum (75%) of the participants had Angle's Class I molar relation followed by Angle's Class II and II. Comparison of mean over jet and DAI score in the various age groups using one-way ANOVA there was a statistically significant difference in the mean DAI score between the participants in the various age groups. CONCLUSION: Knowing the prevalence of malocclusion in a community is of utmost importance, so that appropriate steps can be taken to prevent and treat the dentofacial irregularities.
