RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In some patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, we could perform the cytoreductive surgery and the HIPEC procedure by a complete laparoscopic approach to avoid morbidity. We consider that using laparoscopic approach for performing peritoneal carcinomatosis cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC with closed CO2 recirculation technique is possible and safe, with equal efficacy to conventional methods and hemodynamic complications. OBJECTIVE: Monitoring the effectiveness of the drug distribution in a laparoscopic ctoreductive and HIPEC surgery group with CO2 recirculation respect to a closed and open HIPEC group METHODS: Porcine model that included fifteen mini-pigs. Five pigs were operated with laparoscopic approach performing a pelvic and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. They later received a total laparoscopic closed HIPEC with CO2 recirculation (G1). Group 2 (G2): five pigs operated by an open cytoreductive surgery and closed HIPEC technique. Group 3 (G3): five animals in which an open cytoreductive surgery and an open HIPEC technique was performed. Blood and peritoneal determinations were realized after recirculation of the drug, at 60 min using chromatographic analysis. RESULTS: G1-G2: phrenic right peritoneum, p: 0.46. Phrenic left peritoneum, p: 0.46. Pelvic peritoneum, p: 0.17. Serum paclitaxel: p: 0.01. G1-G3: phrenic right peritoneum, p: 0.34. Phrenic left peritoneum, p: 0.34. Pelvic peritoneum, p: 0.17. Serum paclitaxel G1-G3, p: 0.02. CONCLUSIONS: A total laparoscopic approach for ctoreductive surgery and closed HIPEC with CO2 recirculation may be safe and feasible. In our experimental model there was no significant difference in tissue drug distribution respect the conventional techniques and there was a less toxicity because the serum drug concentration was significantly lower with laparoscopic approach respect the other groups.

RESUMO

The Einstein-de Haas effect was originally observed in a landmark experiment1 demonstrating that the angular momentum associated with aligned electron spins in a ferromagnet can be converted to mechanical angular momentum by reversing the direction of magnetization using an external magnetic field. A related problem concerns the timescale of this angular momentum transfer. Experiments have established that intense photoexcitation in several metallic ferromagnets leads to a drop in magnetization on a timescale shorter than 100 femtoseconds-a phenomenon called ultrafast demagnetization2-4. Although the microscopic mechanism for this process has been hotly debated, the key question of where the angular momentum goes on these femtosecond timescales remains unanswered. Here we use femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction to show that most of the angular momentum lost from the spin system upon laser-induced demagnetization of ferromagnetic iron is transferred to the lattice on sub-picosecond timescales, launching a transverse strain wave that propagates from the surface into the bulk. By fitting a simple model of the X-ray data to simulations and optical data, we estimate that the angular momentum transfer occurs on a timescale of 200 femtoseconds and corresponds to 80 per cent of the angular momentum that is lost from the spin system. Our results show that interaction with the lattice has an essential role in the process of ultrafast demagnetization in this system.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Extranodal lymphoma are rare, in particular, breast non-Hodgkin's lymphoma has an impact of lower 0.5%. It is difficult to diagnose during the pre-operative period, since it can be confused with breast carcinoma. CASE REPORT: A 52 years old female patient was sent due to a lump in her left breast identified in a mammogram. A study was conducted with supplementary tests, being eventually diagnosed as low-grade B-cell follicular lymphoma. She was subjected to a mammary and axillary radioguided occult lesion localisation (ROLL). After, radiation therapy was delivered. CONCLUSIONS: It is a very rare pathology, therefore, there is not relevant research to show effective treatment or diagnosis.

RESUMO

We study the origin of the magnetoelectric coupling in manganite films on ferroelectric substrates. We find large magnetoelectric coupling in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/BaTiO3 ultra-thin films in experiments based on the converse magnetoelectric effect. The magnetization changes by around 30-40% upon applying electric fields on the order of 1 kV/cm to the BaTiO3 substrate, corresponding to magnetoelectric coupling constants on the order of α = (2-5) · 10(-7) s/m. Magnetic anisotropy is also affected by the electric field induced strain, resulting in a considerable reduction of coercive fields. We compare the magnetoelectric effect in pre-poled and unpoled BaTiO3 substrates. Polarized neutron reflectometry reveals a two-layer behavior with a depressed magnetic layer of around 30 Å at the interface. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) shows a granular magnetic structure of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3. The magnetic granularity of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 film and the robust magnetoelastic coupling at the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3/BaTiO3 interface are at the origin of the large magnetoelectric coupling, which is enhanced by phase separation in the manganite.

RESUMO

Strain is a leading candidate for controlling magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the coupling between magnetic order and structural distortion in epitaxial films of the orthorhombic (o-) perovskite LuMnO(3). An antiferromagnetic spin canting in the E-type magnetic structure is shown to be related to the ferroelectrically induced structural distortion and to a change in the magnetic propagation vector. By comparing films of different orientations and thicknesses, these quantities are found to be controlled by b-axis strain. It is shown that compressive strain destabilizes the commensurate E-type structure and reduces its accompanying ferroelectric distortion.

RESUMO

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are uncommon mesenchymal tumors that have been reported in adults. There are very few cases in children. These tumors are considered benign but their behavior is often unpredictable because they can invade nearby structures and transform into malignant variants after several years. Their clinical presentation is diverse but generally asymptomatic and they are detected incidentally in routine radiologic studies. Prognosis depends firstly on resectability of the tumour and secondly on its size, mitotic count, polymorphism, and necrosis within the tumour. Surgical resection is usually curative. Long-term follow-up is recommended because local recurrences can occur after surgery. We report the case of an asymptomatic 15-year-old girl with a giant thoracic mass revealed incidentally on a chest radiograph. Physical examination revealed thoracic asymmetry and no sounds of breathing were found in the right lung. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance images showed the giant size of the mass. Preoperative fine needle biopsy was performed. Intraoperative biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. Although histologically benign, the tumors may enlarge rapidly. In the present case, because of the localization and size of the tumor, the patient was at increased risk. The tumour was resected and the postoperative course was uneventful. At present our patient remains under long term annual follow-up.
