INTRODUCTION: Comparative radiography is a forensic identification and shortlisting technique based on the comparison of skeletal structures in ante-mortem and post-mortem images. The images (e.g., 2D radiographs or 3D computed tomographies) are manually superimposed and visually compared by a forensic practitioner. It requires a significant amount of time per comparison, limiting its utility in large comparison scenarios. METHODS: We propose and validate a novel framework for automating the shortlisting of candidates using artificial intelligence. It is composed of (1) a segmentation method to delimit skeletal structures' silhouettes in radiographs, (2) a superposition method to generate the best simulated "radiographs" from 3D images according to the segmented radiographs, and (3) a decision-making method for shortlisting all candidates ranked according to a similarity metric. MATERIAL: The dataset is composed of 180 computed tomographies and 180 radiographs where the frontal sinuses are visible. Frontal sinuses are the skeletal structure analyzed due to their high individualization capability. RESULTS: Firstly, we validate two deep learning-based techniques for segmenting the frontal sinuses in radiographs, obtaining high-quality results. Secondly, we study the framework's shortlisting capability using both automatic segmentations and superimpositions. The obtained superimpositions, based only on the superimposition metric, allowed us to filter out 40% of the possible candidates in a completely automatic manner. Thirdly, we perform a reliability study by comparing 180 radiographs against 180 computed tomographies using manual segmentations. The results allowed us to filter out 73% of the possible candidates. Furthermore, the results are robust to inter- and intra-expert-related errors.

The purpose of this study is to gain insights into the subsistence activities and nutrition of the Samnite and Peligni populations who lived in the Abruzzo region (Italy) during the Iron Age. The samples under investigation are from Opi Val Fondillo (AQ) and Sulmona S. Lucia (AQ), dating between the Vth and VIth centuries BCE. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes were utilized to characterize the diet of the inhabitants in this region. The study involved analyzing carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes in 84 available samples and comparing them with isotopic values from animals found in the nearby sites of Loreto Aprutino, Gabii, and La Sassa's Cave. The results of this study revealed statistically significant differences between sexes in δ15N values. Additionally, significant statistical variations were observed when comparing different populations.

Dental age estimation (DAE) is key to establishing an individual's identity, and this is relevant in minors. A widely used method for DAE in children is Cameriere's open apices (CAM). Despite its wide dissemination, there are no clear reports of its use in Latin American populations. A scoping review was conducted using a search strategy in the PubMed/MEDLINE database, Web of Science, and a complementary manual search. Only papers using CAM or its regression equation models for evaluating Latin American populations were included. Ten studies published between 2007 and 2020 responded to the search objective. Brazil was the country with the most studies using CAM (7/10), and the University of Macerata (Italy) was the most declared affiliation (6/10). Seven studies used the original CAM formula in populations from Brazil and Peru, while the European formula (EuCAM) was applied in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Although the method underestimated the age values with acceptable error margins, the correction factor substantially improved the predictive power of the method. Some limitations of the method are highlighted. CAM and its variants can be useful for validation in Latin American settings, but attention to population structures and terminologies is suggested for future research.

Introduction: The effectiveness that some methodologies offer is analysed when they are applied to estimate sex in individuals from a geographical environment other than the population from which the formulas were obtained. Objective: To assess the method of Gaya-Sancho applying their regression formulas and comparing modern skeletal collections of the same chronological context. Materials and methods: By means of some metrical variables of the sacrum, the degree of sexual dimorphism of a modern series from Granada is compared with another modern series from Granada and a modern series from Canada. Results: Despite the similarities between the series, the results range from 56.25% to 59.52% in males and from 77.27% to 91.67% in females from Órgiva and from 83.78% to 89.19% in males and from 64.29% to 69.23% in females from Grant. Discussion: These results showed that the difference in series could be influenced by many factors as some authors stated despite the similar geographical context. Conclusions: These results suggest that the regression formulas can be an acceptable method to estimate sex and the existence of differences between the analysed series. (AU)


Introducción: La efectividad de algunos métodos de estimación del sexo se evalúa cuando dichas metodologías se aplican en muestras de distinto contexto geográfico del que es la muestra que origina el método. Objetivo: Evaluar el método de fórmulas de regresión de Gaya-Sancho para la estimación del sexo aplicando dicho método y comparando dos series del mimo contexto temporal. Materiales y métodos: Mediante las medias de algunas variables métricas del sacro, se evaluó el grado de dimorfismo sexual de una colección osteológica contemporánea de Granada comparándola con otras series contemporáneas: una del mismo contexto geográfico (Granada) y otra perteneciente a la colección de Grant (Canadá). Resultados: A pesar de las similitudes encontradas entre las colecciones, los resultados aportan un rango de 56,26 a 59,52% en hombre y de un 77,27 a un 91,67% en mujeres para la serie de Órgiva (Granada); y de un 83,78 al 89,19% en hombre y del 64,29 al 69,23% en mujeres pertenecientes a la colección de Grant (Canadá). Discusión: Estos resultados muestran que la diferencia entre series podría verse afectada por diversos factores como muestran algunos autores pese a la similitud de contexto geográfico. Conclusión: Estos resultados sugieren que las fórmulas de regresión podrían ser utilizadas como un método aceptable para la estimación del sexo además de mostrar existencia de diferencias entre las colecciones analizadas. ABSTRACT: We present an integrative review of the literature conducted to find and analyse specific measures for disinfection and/or sterilization of intraoral complex instruments, applicable to intraoral scanners. We performed a two-stage search in the PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO, REDALYCS, and LILACS databases, and the Google Scholar website, which included full articles in Spanish, Portuguese, and English. The strategy associated the terms 'disinfection', 'biosecurity', 'decontamination', and (a) 'intraoral scanners', and (b) other 'semi-critical' intraoral complex instruments, according to the American Dental Association definition (e.g., 'turbine', etc). Strategy (a) produced just one outcome, whereas (b) produced nine articles, which only suggested low-level disinfectants.The lack of empirically based protocols that allow effective microbiological control makes it necessary to create a new categorization for these instruments when trying to comply with American Dental Association recommendations for dental practice.


RESUMEN: Presentamos una revisión integradora de la literatura realizada para encontrar y analizar medidas específicas de desinfección y / o esterilización de instrumentos complejos intraorales, aplicables a los escáneres intraorales. Realizamos una búsqueda en dos etapas en las bases de datos PubMed / MEDLINE, SciELO, REDALYCS y LILACS, y en el sitio web Google Scholar, que incluía artículos completos en español, portugués e inglés. La estrategia asoció los términos 'desinfección', 'bioseguridad', 'descontaminación' y (a) 'escáneres intraorales', y (b) otros instrumentos complejos intraorales 'semicríticos', según la definición de la Asociación Dental Ameri- cana (p. Ej., 'turbina', etc.). La estrategia (a) produjo un solo resultado, mientras que (b) produjo nueve artículos, que solo sugirieron desinfectantes de bajo nivel. La falta de protocolos de base empírica que permitan un control microbiológico efectivo hace necesario crear una nueva categorización para estos instrumentos, cuando se trata de cumplir con las recomendaciones de la Asociación Dental Americana para la práctica dental.

The aim of this work was to study the sexual dimorphism of the occlusal surface of the maxillary postcanine dentition using geometric morphometric techniques. This study evaluated 139 individuals as part of five osteological collections from municipal cemeteries in the province of Granada (Spain). The landmarks and semilandmarks were analysed by principal components analysis, canonical variate analysis and discriminant analysis. Only the fourth maxillary premolar showed significant sexual dimorphism; however, cross-validation values for shape variables were 64.44% for males and 63.60% for females and 60.17% for males and 60.99% for females when both shape and size variables were considered. The third maxillary premolar and first and second maxillary molars did not show significant sexual dimorphism. The results show that maxillary postcanine dentition cannot assist in sex estimation, either only shape or shape and size.

RESUMO

Despite the high mortality that have been associated with pregnancy and childbirth in past populations, few cases of the remains of pregnant women burials are described in the bioarchaeological reports. This paper is focused on the case of a double inhumation found in the Medieval Muslim Necropolis (11th to 15th centuries) of Sahl ben Malik in Granada (Spain). A complete skeleton of a woman and the skeletal remains of a full-term fetus located under the mother's left femur, were discovered in this burial. None of the evidence for the mother was decisive in determining the cause of death. However, evidence of physiological stress in the woman and possible gynecological complications may have contributed to the death of both individuals. The link between the individuals and their cause of death is examined, discussed and compared with similar archaeological records.

Traumatic injuries are commonly reported in paleopathology. However, fractures of the odontoid process in past populations are uncommon and therefore such injuries may be easily overlooked. This paper describes alterations of the first and second cervical vertebrae, the atlas and axis, of a male individual of advanced age from the medieval necropolis of Maro (Málaga, Spain). These alterations were observed through macroscopic evaluation and radiological analysis. This individual's skeleton is well-preserved, with degenerative changes present in the appendicular skeleton and the rest of the vertebrae. Our differential diagnosis included aplasia of the dens, bifid dens, dens duplicated, ossiculum terminale persistens, os odontoideum, and odontoid process fractures. We concluded that the most likely condition was a broken odontoid process fused with the anterior arch of the atlas, a pseudarthrosis demonstrating that the individual survived this fracture. This study is one of the first reports of an odontoid process fracture in ancient contexts.

Estimating the sex of immature skeletal remains is important when reconstructing the biological profile of unknown individuals in anthropological practice. Teeth have a distinct importance as they are the most frequently recovered physical elements of an individual. They persist after death due to their hardness and resistance to postmortem insults. The aim of this study was to analyse the sexual dimorphism of the occlusal surface of the first deciduous molar using geometric morphometric techniques. This study evaluated 38 first maxillary deciduous molars (21 males, 17 females) and 30 first mandibular deciduous molars (15 males, 15 females) from the Granada osteological collection of identified subadults (Granada, Spain). The landmark and semilandmark coordinates were analysed by principal components analysis, canonical variate analysis and discriminant analysis. Only the first maxillary deciduous molar showed a significant sexual dimorphism, with cross-validation values for shape variables of 93.23% for males and 83.17% for females, and 100% for males and 87.50% for females when both shape and size variables were considered. Despite there being acceptable cross-validation classification for the first mandibular deciduous molar (82.35% for males and 92.31% for females for shape variables and 82.35% for males and 92.31% for females for shape and size variables), no significant differences indicating sexual dimorphism were identified. The results show that the first upper deciduous molar can assist in sex estimation, and that geometric morphometric analysis is a suitable technique to answer questions related to shape that cannot be observed with the naked eye.

Photo-anthropometry is a metric-based facial image comparison technique where measurements of the face are taken from an image using predetermined facial landmarks. In particular, dimensions and proportionality indices (DPIs) are compared to DPIs from another facial image. Different studies concluded that photo-anthropometric facial comparison, as it is currently practiced, is unsuitable for elimination purposes. The major limitation is the need for images acquired under very restrictive, controlled conditions. To overcome this latter issue, we propose a novel methodology to estimate 3D DPIs from 2D ones. It uses computer graphic techniques to simulate thousands of facial photographs under known camera conditions and regression to derive the mathematical relationship between 2D and 3D DPIs automatically. Additionally, we present a methodology that makes use of the estimated 3D DPIs for reducing the number of potential matches of a given unknown facial photograph within a set of known candidates. The error in the estimation of the 3D DPIs can be as large as 35%, but both I and III quartiles are consistently inside the ±5% range. The methodology for filtering cases has demonstrated to be useful in the task of narrowing down the list of possible candidates for a given photograph. It is able to remove on average (validated using cross-validation technique) 57% and 24% of the negative cases, depending on the amounts of DPIs available. Limitations of the work developed together with open research lines are included within the Discussion section.

This study provides regression equations for estimation of age of infants from the dimensions of their developing deciduous teeth. The sample comprises 97 individuals of known sex and age (62 boys, 35 girls), aged between 2 days and 1,081 days. The age-estimation equations were obtained for the sexes combined, as well as for each sex separately, thus including "sex" as an independent variable. The values of the correlations and determination coefficients obtained for each regression equation indicate good fits for most of the equations obtained. The "sex" factor was statistically significant when included as an independent variable in seven of the regression equations. However, the "sex" factor provided an advantage for age estimation in only three of the equations, compared to those that did not include "sex" as a factor. These data suggest that the ages of infants can be accurately estimated from measurements of their developing deciduous teeth.

In archeology or forensics, the analysis of the ilia is often used to determine the age and sex of unknown individuals. However, sex determination using the skeletal remains of individuals who did not develop secondary sexual characteristics remains controversial. Accurately estimating the sex of subadults is hampered by a small number of studies based on identified skeletal collections of juvenile individuals. Here, we analyzed the sexual dimorphism of the subadult ilia using geometric morphometric techniques and individuals from the osteological collection of identified subadults from San José's graveyard (Granada). Seventy-one left ilia from 40 males and 31 females aged between birth and 1 year were included in the analysis. Three landmarks and 27 semi-landmarks of the ilia were placed. By principal component analysis, we found that the size and shape of the ilia could be used to differentiate males and females.

SUMMARY: Various methods have been proposed for estimating dimorphism. The objective of this study was to compare sex determination results from cranial measurements using discriminant analysis or logistic regression. The study sample comprised 130 individuals (70 males) of known sex, age, and cause of death from San José cemetery in Granada (Spain). Measurements of 19 neurocranial dimensions and 11 splanchnocranial dimensions were subjected to discriminant analysis and logistic regression, and the percentages of correct classification were compared between the sex functions obtained with each method. The discriminant capacity of the selected variables was evaluated with a cross-validation procedure. The percentage accuracy with discriminant analysis was 78.2% for the neurocranium (82.4% in females and 74.6% in males) and 73.7% for the splanchnocranium (79.6% in females and 68.8% in males). These percentages were higher with logistic regression analysis: 85.7% for the neurocranium (in both sexes) and 94.1% for the splanchnocranium (100% in females and 91.7% in males).

The current study was undertaken to test the validity and reproducibility of the Purkait triangle method and some alternative proposals for sex prediction from the proximal femur in the adult population of Spain. To that end, sexual dimorphism of the maximum femoral head diameter and the minimum femoral neck diameter were also evaluated. The study was conducted on 186 femora (109 males and 77 females) taken from the San José collection of identified individuals (Southern Spain). Discriminant function analyses (DFA) employing the jackknife procedure for cross-validations were considered. Overall, more than 94% of individuals of both sexes were correctly classified. The most dimorphic single variable from the triangle method was the intertrochanteric apex distance (BC) that reached 85.5% accuracy, falling below those obtained for the femoral head and femoral neck diameter, respectively, (89.8 and 91.9%). Combining BC with the neck diameter, the predictive ability increased to 92.5%; when femoral head diameter was added to the latter two, the classification success rate improved further up to 94.6% (94.1% after cross-validation). We conclude that the classification success rates of the Purkait's method remained considerably below any of those obtained with the models proposed in the present study which proved to be a much better and more reliable choice both as single predictors and in combination with other variables.

One of the most common conditions during fetal development is anencephaly, which often involves many identification difficulties in the context of physical anthropology, as it causes severe skull challenges. In this paper, we describe the alterations found in the skulls of two perinatal individuals with anencephaly from the osteological collection of identified infants in the Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada, Spain. Both subjects of study are in perfect state of preservation. Despite the severe malformations, all skull bones have been targeted and identified, as the possibility of studying a subject with a complete, articulated, and partially mummified skull; the other was disjointed and well preserved. The skull bones of these two individuals affected with anencephaly have been described in detail, allowing this pathological condition to be identified in skeletonized individuals in archaeological or forensic contexts, in cases where these bones did not have anatomical connection or when these were taphonomically altered.

Sex estimation is one of the first steps in forensic anthropology to identify human remains. In absence of the skull or the pelvis, any skeletal remain becomes fundamental for identification, especially in mass-disaster cases. The sternum is a potentially useful element in anthropological analysis with a high recovery rate in both forensic-and archaeological context. This study aims to develop classification functions for use in Spanish population. For this, sternum sexual dimorphism is studied in a sample of 105 individuals, known age-at-death, ancestry and sex, from San José Municipal Cemetery of Granada (Spain). Lin's concordance correlation coefficient was used to estimate intra-and inter-observer error. In discriminant analysis for estimating sex, cross-validation shows accuracy rates exceeds 90% for sternum body length and maximum width (91.8%), or total length with maximum width (90.7%). Isolated variables with higher accuracy rates are total sternum length (89.1%), and sternum body length (87%). Although there is compliance with Hyrtl's law it is not useful for estimating sex in Spanish population. These discriminant functions have also been validated successfully in two samples from Portugal (Coimbra identified skeletal collection--CISC, and 21st century identified ckeletal collection--Santarém XXI): the variables with higher accuracy rates sternum total length with its maximum width (92.3% the correctly classified individual in the sample CISC; and 83.5% in the sample of Santarém XXI) and the sternum total length (92.1% and 78.5%, respectively). The discriminant functions achieved with the collection of the San Jose cemetery of Granada can be applied to current remains, provided that study populations present a similar sexual dimorphism, like the two samples from Portuguese population presented in this study.

In the last decade, the advances in imaging technologies have intensified the use of multislice computed tomography (MSCT) for anthropological purposes. The published literature has proved it to be a suitable tool for establishing sexually dimorphic characteristics in different anatomical areas. In this context, the main purpose of the present study was to explore the accuracy of traditional morphometric method when applied to data acquired in three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed os coxae of living Spanish population, to develop a series of statistically robust patterns for sex assessment and to test their validity in innominate remains. For this purpose, 150 volume-rendered innominate CT scans were selected to examine nine interlandmark linear distances by means of descriptive statistics and discriminant function analyses (DFA) employing the jackknife procedure for cross-validations. Five measurements were sexually dimorphic. Acetabular diameter was the single most accurate predictor. This, combined with innominate height and innominate breadth, contributed very significantly to sex estimation. Overall, classification accuracies were 89.3-95.3 % (89.3-94.7 % after cross-validation), with a sex-bias lower than 5 %. The second validation approach performed on a sample of 96 individuals from another contemporary Spanish reference collection comprising dry bones showed the high percentage of accurate classification (83.3-95.8 %). In conclusion, the assessment of sex using cross-sectional MSCT images of the os coxae is possible and the discriminant functions obtained on Spanish living individuals can also be effective for estimating sex from skeletal remains.

The objective of this study of the maturation of deciduous dentition was to offer a novel age-estimation method for Mediterranean populations, using the osteological collection of fetuses, infants, and young children in the Anthropology Laboratory of Granada University (Spain) as study material. After excluding premature newborns and infants with disease, the final study sample comprised 1303 deciduous teeth suitable for analysis from 138 individuals (80 male, 58 female) aged between 24 weeks in utero and 6 years. Eleven mineralization stages were defined for the dental maturation analysis, and the alveolar emergence was also studied. The criteria published by Demirjian et al. (Hum. Biol. 45 (1973) 211), Moorrees et al. (J. Dent. Res. 42 (1963a) 490), and Liversidge et al. (Am. J. Phys. Anthropol. 123 (2004) 172) were combined and modified for this purpose. The reproducibility of the proposed method is supported by the low intra- and inter-observer error in the identification of these development stages. The results provide information on the mean age of attainment of each of 11 mineralization stages and on the average age for each stage in each deciduous tooth type, considering each sex separately and both sexes combined.

Sex determination is an important task in physical anthropology and forensic medicine. The study sample comprised 121 individuals of known sex, age, and cause of death from San Jose cemetery in Granada (Spain). Eight dimensions were analyzed, and discriminant function analysis was performed for each vertebra to obtain discriminating functions and study the percentage of correct assignations of these functions. The percentage accuracy was approximately 80% for both vertebrae, but varied according to the sex, being higher for the 7th cervical in males and higher for the 12th thoracic in females. As reported in other populations, the greatest dimorphism values were found for the length of the inferior surface of the vertebral body and the width and length of the vertebral foramen of the 7th cervical vertebra and for the length of the inferior surface of the vertebral body of the 12th thoracic vertebra.
