Objectives: To report the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain, headache, jaw pain and difficulty in swallowing among people who stutter (PWS). METHODS: The cross-sectioal study was conducted from October 3, 2021, to March 21, 2022, after approval from the ethics review committee of King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia, and comprised adult people who stutter belonging to different regions of Saudi Arabia. They were divided into five groups based on stuttering severity as estimated by Stuttering Severity Instrument-4. Data was collected on musculoskeletal pain in different body areas using a questionnaire.. Data ws analysed using SPSS 22. RESULTS: Of the 101 Arabic-speaking subjects, 63(62.4%) were males and 38(37.6%) were females. The overall mean age was 27±7 years (range: 18-39 years). The largest group was of subjects with moderate severity of stuttering 31(30.6%); 21(68%) males and 10(32%) females. The increase in number of musculoskeletal pain locations was related to the severity of stuttering (p<0.05). The most common musculoskeletal pain sites were the lower back 31(31%), neck 26(26%) and shoulder 26(26%). Frequent headaches and difficulty chewing hard food due to jaw pain were reported by 49(49%) and 22(22%) participants, respectively (p<0.05). Swallowing difficulty was reported by 9(9%) participants (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Widespread chronic musculoskeletal pain of low intensity was found to be common among people who stuttered, and the number of pain locations was positively related to stuttering severity.

RESUMO

Stuttering is a widespread speech disorder affecting people globally, and it impacts effective communication and quality of life. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and computational intelligence have introduced new possibilities for augmenting stuttering detection and treatment procedures. In this systematic review, the latest AI advancements and computational intelligence techniques in the context of stuttering are explored. By examining the existing literature, we investigated the application of AI in accurately determining and classifying stuttering manifestations. Furthermore, we explored how computational intelligence can contribute to developing innovative assessment tools and intervention strategies for persons who stutter (PWS). We reviewed and analyzed 14 refereed journal articles that were indexed on the Web of Science from 2019 onward. The potential of AI and computational intelligence in revolutionizing stuttering assessment and treatment, which can enable personalized and effective approaches, is also highlighted in this review. By elucidating these advancements, we aim to encourage further research and development in this crucial area, enhancing in due course the lives of PWS.

Psychoacoustic and speech perception measures were compared for a group who were exposed to noise regularly through listening to music via personal music players (PMP) and a control group without such exposure. Lifetime noise exposure, quantified using the NESI questionnaire, averaged ten times higher for the exposed group than for the control group. Audiometric thresholds were similar for the two groups over the conventional frequency range up to 8 kHz, but for higher frequencies, the exposed group had higher thresholds than the control group. Amplitude modulation detection (AMD) thresholds were measured using a 4000-Hz sinusoidal carrier presented in threshold-equalizing noise at 30, 60, and 90 dB sound pressure level (SPL) for modulation frequencies of 8, 16, 32, and 64 Hz. At 90 dB SPL but not at the lower levels, AMD thresholds were significantly higher (worse) for the exposed than for the control group, especially for low modulation frequencies. The exposed group required significantly higher signal-to-noise ratios than the control group to understand sentences in noise. Otoacoustic emissions did not differ for the two groups. It is concluded that listening to music via PMP can have subtle deleterious effects on speech perception, AM detection, and hearing sensitivity over the extended high-frequency range.

In this study, we amid to evaluate the correlation between the change in the expressed levels of anti-GAD antibodies titers, oxidative stress markers, cytokines markers, and cognitive capacity in adolescents with mild stuttering. Eighty participants (60 male/20 female) with the age range of 10-18 years with moderate stutteringparticipated in this study. To assess the stuttering and cognitive function, stutteringseverity instrument (SSI-4; 4th edit.)and the LOTCA-7 scores assessment were applied respectively in all subjects. In addition, serum GAD antibodies, cytokines like TNF-α, CRP,and IL-6 withtotal antioxidant capacity and nitric oxide as oxidative stress markers were estimated using calorimetry and immunoassay techniques.The results showed that good cognitive capacity was reported in about 56.25 % of the study population (n = 45) with a 117.52 ± 6.3 mean LOTCA-7 score. However, abnormal cognitive function was identified in 43.75 % of the study population (n = 35); they were categorized into moderate (score 62-92, n = 35), and poor (score 31-62; n = 10). There were significant associations between cognitive capacity reported and all biomarkers. The expression of GAD antibodies is significantly associated with the degree of cognitive capacity among students with stuttering. Significant association with the reduction (P = 0.01) in LOTCA-7 score domains, particularly orientation, thinking operations, attention, and concentration among students with variable cognitive capacity compared to controls. In addition, the expressed higher GAD antibodies in students with moderate and poor cognitive capacity showed to be significantly correlated with both elevated concentrations of cytokines; TNF-α, CRP, and IL-6, and the reduction of TAC and nitric oxide (NO) respectively. This study concludes that abnormality of cognitive capacity showed to be associated with higher expression of GAD antibodies, cytokines, and oxidative stress in school students with moderate stuttering.

Green tea and its polyphenolic compounds have been shown to exert positive effects in individuals with psychological disorders. The protective role of green tea against stuttering or its related consequences, depression, anxiety and stress, were evaluated in adolescents with moderate stuttering (MS). A total of 60 adolescents aged (12-18) years old were enrolled in this study. Patients were classified according to standardized test material Stuttering Severity Instrument, 4th Edition was used to estimate the severity of stuttering; participants were classified into two groups: a normal healthy group (n=30) and a MS group (n=30). The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale and General Health Questionnaire were used to estimate the degree of depression, anxiety and stress as well as general mental health. The physiological profile of stress hormones, as a measure of the response to green tea response, was also measured amongst participants. Adrenal stress hormones cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), acetylcholine (ACTH), corticosterone and the cortisol:DHEA ratio were assayed. In addition, the constituent green tea polyphenols and their quantities were determined using liquid chromatography analysis. Decaffeinated green tea was administered six cups/day for 6 weeks, and this significantly improved the depression, anxiety, stress and mental health consequences associated with stuttering in adolescents. In addition, increased consumption of green tea significantly reduced elevated levels of adrenal stress hormones; cortisol, DHEA, ACTH and corticosterone, and increased the cortisol:DHEA ratio in the control and adolescents who stuttered. The data showed that drinking six cups of decaffeinated green tea, which is enriched in catechins (1,580 mg) and other related polyphenols, was sufficient to improve the consequences of mental health associated with stuttering in younger aged individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The adaptation effect refers to the gradual reduction of dysfluencies with repeated exposure to a substance. The concept of adaptation was originally defined in light of the reading task. Yet, limited studies have also confirmed the adaptation effect in spontaneous-speech. The reduction in the dysfluencies can be attributed to the reduction in the anxiety, or getting habituated to the content of reading material or due to motor learning. METHODS: This research aimed at measuring the adaptation effect in real and virtual reality (VR) environments for spontaneous-speech and reading. The objectives were divided into two categories. The first objective aimed at comparing the adaption effect for the real and VR environments on the reading task, while the second objective addressed the same objective, but for the spontaneous-speech task. The study involved 24 participants in the age range of 19-33 years. SSI-4 was administered on the participants. CONCLUSION: The reduction in dysfluencies was seen for both real and VR testing environments. The reduction in the dysfluency was more marked for reading-task compared to spontaneous-speech task. The results shed light on the relationship between adaptation effect and the test environment.

PURPOSE: The current study aimed at investigating the experience of immigrants who stutter in a foreign country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire tapping details about the immigrants handling various communicative situations in a first and second language was configured and used in the current study. A total of 14 participants were enrolled in the study. Participants were sub-grouped based on the severity by using Stuttering Severity Instruments, 4th Edition (SSI-4). The composite scores on SSI-4 including the physical concomitants were used for sub grouping. RESULTS: The findings revealed that the amount of difficulty experienced by immigrants was directly proportional to the degree of stuttering. Participants had difficulty in communicating with boss and colleagues regardless of the language used. They experienced less difficulty while speaking in malls and courier persons. Participants who knew the native language Arabic could handle the situations better than individuals who did not know Arabic. CONCLUSION: Stuttering would impede social participation and would increase anxiety. This speech-related anxiety is known to increase when these individuals immigrate to foreign countries.

The current study was carried out with the aim of investigating the effect of maximally relaxed lying posture on disfluencies in young adults who stutter. A total of 24 participants (17 males, seven females; mean age = 24.9 ± 6.2 years) with developmental stuttering were a part of the study. The participants were asked to perform spontaneous speaking and reading aloud tasks in standard sitting and maximally relaxed lying postures. The severity of stuttering for the studied postures was estimated by using the Stuttering Severity Instrument. The results on the Stuttering Severity Instrument showed that stuttering parameters improved during the maximally relaxed lying posture compared with the standard sitting position. The results are discussed in the light of motor control concepts. It is concluded that the maximally relaxed lying posture can facilitate improvement in stuttering scores during spontaneous speaking as well as reading aloud in young adults who stutter. Reduced stuttering scores in the maximally relaxed lying posture suggest that speech therapists can position participants in this position while treating people who stutter.

The Covid-19 pandemic is an ongoing crisis and is colloquially known as the corona virus pandemic. As no specific treatment protocol are available for this viral infection, social distancing is considered as one of the remedies to prevent the infection. This study aimed to investigate the anxiety issues in persons who stutter (PWS). A total of 110 (55 PWS and 55 Neuro-typical Adults) were enrolled for the study. A questionnaire comprising of two parts on social anxiety and consequences of social distancing was administered on the participants. The results showed that PWS felt more socially anxious. PWS opined that they were comfortable during the corona virus lockdown period, as the situation demanded them to speak minimally to strangers. Neuro-typical adults, on the other hand, reported that they did not observe any change with respect to the social communication skills during lockdown.

Technology has been revolutionizing health care. The current article is split into three parts, the first portion discusses the usage of technological devices in stuttering treatment, the scan of technical devices may be used specifically in treatment or can be used to offer guidance and thereby improve the pace of expression. They will even help to create physiological improvements. The second section of the article refers to telehealth as a means of providing services to people with stuttering. This approach has become a simple benevolence of technology and has managed to enter the unreached. Teletherapy can also be utilized for individuals who are robbed of treatment owing to isolation from financial restrictions. The third part of the analysis is regarding the apps. Apps may be used as an adjunct to speech language training or can be used during the repair process.

Stuttering is a common disease that exists in all societies and ethnic groups of differing incidence rates. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the social awareness of stuttering in the Saudi community on the basis of a questionnaire. We will try to examine the incidence, triggers and duration of stuttering in the Saudi community. This study is descriptive, a questionnaire-based analysis involving the active participation of the Saudi community. The questionnaire, exposure to Stuttering, was addressed and balanced in terms of ethnicity, age and schooling. A total of 1,000 Saudi people was invited to participate in this questionnaire-based survey, with only 878 participants between 18 and 65 years of age participating in the study; most of them were males. In this survey, 79.5% of the Saudi population studies, most of them male (60.5% vs. 25.0% female) claimed that more than 6% of the population had stutters. There was also a substantial correlation between the degree of schooling, sex, and person experience and attitudes towards stuttering. It was often assumed that younger ages were prone to higher instances of stuttering relative to older ages (≤18 years vs 18 years of age). In comparison, handiness and IQ scores did not indicate any correlation with the occurrence of stuttering among the Saudi community. In conclusion, this questionnaire-based analysis, participants of both sexes claimed that more than 6% of the Saudi population were impaired by stuttering, which increased dramatically in males relative to females. They also claimed that both handiness and IQ ratings had little impact on the rate of stuttering. However, scant research on the effects of stuttering has scarcely been reported. Future experiments of effective public education preparation and health actions for stuttering are also welcome.

OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to investigate the effects of body position on the level and severity of stuttering in young adults with developmental stuttering. METHODS: A total of 24 subjects (male: 17; female: 7; mean age: 24.9 ± 6.2 years) with developmental stuttering participated. The participants were asked to perform oral reading and spontaneous monologue-speaking tasks in different body postures while their speech was recorded. During reading and speaking tasks, the Stuttering Severity Instrument was used to quantify the severity of stuttering. The effects of different body postures on stuttering severity, reading task, and speaking task scores were analyzed. RESULTS: Significant differences in stuttering severity, reading task, and speaking task scores were found for different body postures. Post hoc analyses revealed a significant difference in stuttering severity, reading task, and speaking task scores when subjects were sitting on a chair with no arm support compared to lying down (p<0.05). Similarly, there were significant differences for two sitting positions (sitting on a chair with no arm support vs sitting on a chair with arm support (p<0.05)). CONCLUSIONS: Body postures or body segment positions that relax and facilitate the muscles of the neck and shoulders may potentially improve speech fluency in young adults with developmental stuttering.

The assessment of clients with speech disorders presents challenges for speech-language pathologists. For example, having a reliable way of measuring the severity of the case, determining which remedial program is aligned with a patient's needs, and measuring of treatment processes. There is potential for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications to enhance speech therapy sessions by providing objective insights and real-time visualization of brain activity during the sessions. This paper presents a study on emotional state detection during speech pathology. The goal of this study is to investigate affective-motivational brain responses to stimuli in children who stutter. To this end, we conducted an experiment that involved recording frontal electroencephalography (EEG) activity from fifteen children with stuttering whilst they looked at visual stimuli. The contribution of our study is to provide a comprehensive background and a framework for emotional state detection experiments as assessment and monitoring tool in speech pathology. It mainly discusses the feasibility and potential benefits of applying EEG-based emotion detection in speech-language therapy contexts of use. The findings of our research indicate that emotional recognition using non-invasive EEG-based BCI system is sufficient to differentiate between affective states of individuals in treatment contexts.
