RESUMO

Collaboration between physicians and nurses is essential to healthcare delivery and is associated with high-quality patient care, greater patient satisfaction, and better health outcomes. Hence, it is imperative that doctors and nurses have a particular set of interprofessional collaboration skills. This descriptive cross-sectional study assessed how medical students in the pre-clinical and clinical years perceived attitudes toward collaboration between physicians and nurses in a hospital setting. The Jefferson Scale of Attitude toward Physician-nurse Collaboration (JSAPNC) was reverse-translated into Arabic for the current study. The results showed a total JSAPNC mean score of 46.55, lower than other medical students in other universities. In general, the results of the study showed no significant difference in the total JSAPNC score among medical students when analyzed according to age, clinical exposure, and year level, except in the two factors of JSAPNC: shared education and teamwork (p = 0.038) and caring as opposed to curing (p = 0.043). The findings of this study suggest the necessity of integrating interprofessional education (IPE) across the medical school curriculum because, as future physicians, medical students would be well equipped to treat their patients in partnership with their nursing colleagues.

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Saussurea lappa (S. lappa) is an important species of the Asteraceae family with several purposes in traditional medicine. This study intended to explore the cytotoxic effect of S. lappa on HepG2 cancer cell proliferation. Materials and Methods: The effects of an S. lappa n-butanol extract on the induction of apoptosis were investigated by flow cytometry and mitochondrial cytochrome C-releasing apoptosis assay. Additionally, real-time PCR was employed to confirm apoptosis initiation. Further, qualitative estimation of the active constituent of S. lappa was done by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Results: The cell viability study revealed that the n-butanol extract of S. lappa demonstrated potent cytotoxicity against HepG2 cancer cells, with an IC50 value of 56.76 µg/mL. Cell morphology with dual staining of acridine orange (AO)-ethidium bromide (EB) showed an increase in orange/red nuclei due to cell death by S. lappa n-butanol extract compared to control cells. Apoptosis, as the mode of cell death, was also confirmed by the higher release of cytochrome C from mitochondria, the increased expression of caspase-3 and bax, along with down regulation of Bcl-2. Conclusion: These findings conclude that S. lappa is a cause of hepatic cancer cell death through apoptosis and a potential natural source suggesting furthermore investigation of its active compounds that are responsible for these observed activities.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The knowledge of genetics among medical students was assessed to identify and analyze gaps that serve as bases for the revision of the current genetics curriculum of the (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) MBBS Program of the College of Medicine at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University (PNU). METHODS: A 65-item multiple-choice (MCQs) test in Genetics was administered to 71 second and fourth-year medical students to assess their knowledge in Genetics. MCQs were validated and tested for their reliability. Self-assessment of students' genetics knowledge was also determined by asking them whether their knowledge in genetics is sufficient or not sufficient for their future clinical practice. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. RESULTS: Forty-one second-year and thirty fourth-year medical students took the Genetic test. Exam results showed insufficient knowledge of Genetics, with 43.85% among the students answering the exam correctly. In self-assessment, the majority (83.3% to 87.8%) of the respondents considered their knowledge of genetics insufficient for future clinical practice. A higher knowledge level of basic genetics compared with clinically related genetics concepts was observed. Generally, second-year students significantly scored higher in molecular and cytogenetics (P=0.012), principles of genetic transmission (P=0.022), and inheritance of genetic diseases (P=0.024), compared with the fourth-year medical students who only scored higher in items related to cancer genetics (P=0.022). CONCLUSION: Medical students' genetics knowledge is insufficient, especially on clinically oriented concepts like genetic testing and genetic counseling and should be strengthened for future clinical practice. The fourth-year medical students do not retain the knowledge of genetics; thus, integrating medical genetics in clinical years is imperative.

RESUMO

Chemotherapy drugs usually inflict a lethal dose to tumour cells with the consequence that these cells are being killed by cell death. However, each round of chemotherapy also causes damage to normal somatic cells. The DNA cross-linking agent oxaliplatin (OXP), which causes DNA double-strand breaks, and vinflunine (VFN), which disrupts the mitotic spindle, are two of these chemotherapy drugs which were evaluated in vitro using peripheral lymphocytes from colorectal cancer patients and healthy individuals to determine any differential response. Endpoints examined included micronucleus (MN) induction using the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) assay and pancentromeric fluorescence in situ hybridisation. Also, survivin expression was monitored since it regulates the mitotic spindle checkpoint and inhibits apoptosis. OXP produced cytogenetic damage (micronuclei in binucleated cells) via its clastogenic but also previously unknown aneugenic action, possibly through interfering with topoisomerase II, whilst VFN produced micronuclei in mononucleated cells because of incomplete karyokinesis. Survivin expression was found to be significantly reduced in a concentration-dependent manner by not only OXP but surprisingly also VFN. This resulted in large numbers of multinucleated cells found with the CBMN assay. As survivin is upregulated in cancers, eliminating apoptosis inhibition might provide a more targeted chemotherapy approach; particularly, when considering VFN, which only affects cycling cells by inhibiting their mitotic spindle, and alongside possibly other pro-apoptotic compounds. Hence, these newly found properties of VFN -the inhibition of survivin expression-might demonstrate a promising chemotherapeutic approach as VFN induces less DNA damage in normal somatic cells compared to other chemotherapeutic compounds.
