RESUMO

Disaster is a state of serious disruptions in the functionality of any society or county. Disasters pose serious economic or environmental impacts that surpass the capacity of the affected country or society to compete with the use of their assets. Recently, Pakistan significantly prone to health disasters due to COVID-19 among developing South Asian countries. The long-term impact of health disasters and other natural hazards put additional pressure mostly on the government's economic policy. It forces the government to follow a constructive approach like a disaster relief-based approach rather than a conventional mitigation management formation to reduce the impact of disaster risk. This study elaborates on the main issues associated with disaster preparedness as well as recovery of the economy and businesses of the country. For Scientific risk performance analysis, open-source data from the National Institute of Disaster Management (NDMA) has been utilized to study the current situation of COVID-19 in Pakistan. Results show Pakistan has been facing a highly vulnerable situation as more than three hundred and fifty thousand confirmed cases have been reported. Poor health and technical management facilities have been exposed against COVID-19 as Pakistan has a low heath budget because of its declining GDP growth rate in the world. This research will help in disaster preparedness and the development of a disaster risk management framework while designing strategies to deal with such pandemics in the future.

In this study, we investigate the potential protective effect of Moringa oleifera Lam. extract (MOE) against lead-induced neurotoxicity. Wistar rats were allocated equally into (a) a control group, (b) a lead acetate (PbAc) group intraperitoneally injected with 20 mg/kg PbAc, (c) a MOE group orally gavaged with MOE (250 mg/kg), and (d) a MOE + PbAc group orally gavaged with MOE 3 hr before receiving intraperitoneal injections of PbAc. All rats were treated for 14 days. Our results revealed that PbAc-induced brain injury, accompanied by increased levels of oxidative stress markers. Moreover, Pb enhanced the inflammatory response and triggered neuronal apoptosis, as well as significantly depleted glutathione content and inhibited antioxidant enzyme activity. Interestingly, concurrent treatment with MOE ameliorated oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in the brain cortex. The current study provides evidence that MOE has the potential to protect neuronal tissues in PbAc-exposed rats via attenuation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study reports the potential neuroprotective effect of Moringa oleifera Lam. (MOE) against lead-induced cortical brain toxicity. Our data reveal that PbAc-induced oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis in cortical tissues. However, simultaneous treatment of rats with MOE abrogated cortical brain inflammatory biomarkers, mitigated cortical tissue damage, and restrained oxidative stress, programmed cell death, and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) translocation. In addition, MOE stimulated detoxifying enzymes in PbAc-treated rats. These findings provide evidence that simultaneous treatment with MOE has the potential to attenuate PbAc-induced brain damage in rats by restraining oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis via attenuation of NF-κB signaling.

PURPOSE: To study the cytotoxic evaluation, antimicrobial and confocal analysis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) obtained from a novel plant product fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) seed extract (FSE). METHODS: ZnO NPs were analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, FTIR, TEM and EDX techniques. The MTT cell cytotoxicity assay measured the proliferation and survival of MCF-7 cells treated at different concentrations of FSE-derived ZnO NPs. The antimicrobial activity towards pathogenic bacteria and yeast strains was investigated. RESULTS: The UV-Vis spectra showed two peaks at 438 nm and 446 nm, confirming nanoparticle formation. The SEM morphology results showed porous ranging from 23-51 nm. The antitumor activity value (IC50) was at 50 µg/mL and 100 µg/mL. Besides, morphological changes of MCF-7, cells treated at different concentrations of FSE of ZnO NPs were observed in cell cultures transfected with a transient pCMV6-XL4-GFP-expressing vector containing C-terminal domain GFP-tagged proteins, which resulted in an apoptotic effect. Antimicrobial IZ ranged up No Inhibition to 18.00 ± 0.4. The IZ revealed at the highest concentration was E. faecium VRE and yeast Cryptococcus sp. (18.00 ± 0.4. mm), followed by S. aureus (17.00 ± 0.2 mm) and P. aeruginosa and the yeast C. parapsilosis (16 ± 0.4 mm). The IZ was equal to that caused by the nystatin to Cryptococcus sp., which was significantly highest than ampicillin treatments of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, C. albicans, and C. parapsilosis. The MIC value of the FSE-derived ZnO NPs tested against E.faecium and C.albicans was 6.00 µg/mL (E. faecium and C. albicans). It was 32.00 µg/mL (S. aureus, S. typhimurium and Cryptococcus sp.), 64.00 µg/mL (P. aeruginosa), and 128 µg/mL (C. parapsilosis). CONCLUSION: As far as it is to our knowledge, this study established, for the first time, the biological activities of biosynthesized ZnO NPs from FSE and their synergistic therapeutic potential.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is emerging as a major global health-care system challenge with a growing burden worldwide. Due to the inconsistent cancer registry system in Saudi Arabia, the epidemiology of cancer is still dispersed in the country. Consequently, this review aimed to assemble the epidemiological metrics of cancer in Saudi Arabia in light of the available published data during the period from (2010-2019). METHODS: Published literature from Saudi Arabia relating to cancer incidence, prevalence, risk factors, and other epidemiological metrics were accessed through electronic search in Medline/PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, Google Scholar, and public database that meet the inclusion criteria. Relevant keywords were used during the electronic search about different types of cancers in Saudi Arabia. No filters were used during the electronic searches. Data were pooled and odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were calculated. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed to assess the well-determined risk factors associated with different types of cancers. RESULTS: The most common cancers in Saudi Arabia are breast, colorectal, prostate, brain, lymphoma, kidney and thyroid outnumbering respectively. Their prevalence rates and OR (95%CI) as follow: breast cancer 53% and 0.93 (0.84-1.00); colon-rectal cancer (CRC) 50.9% and 1.2 (0.81-1.77); prostate cancer 42.6% and 3.2 (0.88-31.11); brain/Central Nervous System cancer 9.6% and 2.3 (0.01-4.2); Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma 9.2% and 3.02 (1.48-6.17); kidney cancer 4.6% and 2.05 (1.61-2.61), and thyroid cancer 12.9% and 6.77 (2.34-19.53). CONCLUSION: Within the diverse cancers reported from Saudi Arabia, the epidemiology of some cancers magnitude 3-fold in the latest years. This increase might be attributed to the changing in the Saudi population lifestyle (adopting western model), lack of cancer awareness, lack of screening & early detection programs, social barriers toward cancer investigations. Obesity, genetics, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, viral infection, and iodine & Vit-D deficiency represent the apparent cancer risk factors in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there is an emerging increase in the prevalence of oral and oropharyngeal cancers (O-OPCs) across the Arabian Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Consequently, this review aimed to explore the epidemiology and possible risk factors of O-OPCs in GCC countries. METHODS: Data published after 2008 related to O-OPCs in GCC countries were obtained through electronic searches in Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE and Google Scholar. Keywords related to the association between O-OPCs metrics (epidemiology and risk factors) and GCC countries were used for electronic searches. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of OPCs increased significantly over time (40-51%) in some countries (Saudi Arabia and Arab Emigrated) of the Gulf regions. The pooled risk factor was 3.4 (2.5 - 4.7). Among the risk factors, human papillomavirus and the use of smoke and smokeless tobacco revealed odds ratio (OR) 3.31 (3.13 - 4.5) and 0.60 (0.45 - 0.80) at 95% confidence interval (CI). CONCLUSION: A positive correlation between factors like age, diet, hygiene, genetics, viral and bacterial infection, consumption of alcohol and tobacco products with OPC-MFC is suggested.

Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with several negative outcomes including neuronal injury. Medicinal plants supplementation has been widely applied to treat or decrease diabetic complications. Here, the possible neuroprotective effect of Artemisia judaica extract (AjE. 300 mg kg-1  day-1 ) against neuronal deficits in diabetes model induced by high-fat diet (HFD) administration and streptozotocin (STZ, 30 mg/Kg) injection in rats was investigated. Diabetic rats showed a disturbance in the neuronal redox homeostasis as confirmed by the elevated lipoperoxidation and nitric oxide formation along with the decreased antioxidant molecules. In addition, a state of neuroinflammation and apoptosis were recorded in the brain tissue in diabetic rats. Furthermore, HFD/STZ provoked neurochemical alterations. However, AjE administration was found to abrogate significantly the neuronal impairments associated with diabetes. This neuroprotective effect comes from its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic, and neuromodulatory activity; suggesting that AjE may be applied to alleviate neurological impairments in diabetic patients. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose level comes from the dysregulation of insulin production and/or its action. The persisted hyperglycemia is correlated with the progression of several physical complications including renal, hepatic, vascular, retinal, and neuronal dysfunction. Artemisia is used in the nutritional and medicinal proposes due to the enriched bioactive molecules such as essential oil, flavonoids, phenolics, sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, and artemisinin. And we found that Artemisia judaica extract (AjE) administration was able to abrogate significantly the neuronal impairments associated with diabetes. This neuroprotective effect comes from its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and neuromodulatory activity; suggesting that AjE may be applied to alleviate neurological impairments in diabetic patients.

RESUMO

This study discusses the impact of different economic indicators on economic stability, including honest leadership, improved infrastructure, revenue generation, and CPEC taking into account the double mediating role of environmental sustainability and sustainable development, while considering the latest COVID-19 situation. This study adopted primary data collection methods and obtained data from the employees of CPEC by using questionnaires and smart-PLS for analysis purposes. The results revealed that honest leadership, improved infrastructure, revenue generation, and CPEC have a positive nexus with economic stability. Despite the severe impact of COVID-19 on the country's economy, the economic corridor plays a vital role in stabilizing the state's economy and supports all those related to this phenomenal project either directly or indirectly.
