RESUMO

Objectives: Since the nursing professional values have garnered attention as a principal criterion for safe‒quality nursing practice, it was measured using the Nurses Professional Values Scale‒three. We aimed to validate and ascertain the psychometric indicators of the Arabic version of the Nurses Professional Values Scale-three among Saudi student nurses. Method: This methodological study recruited student nurses using convenience sampling from two nursing colleges at KSA. About 438 valid questionnaires were returned out of 500 questionnaires which were distributed over students in a formal day class time; representing a response rate of 87.6%. A 2‒fold cross‒validation process was adopted. A transcultural process was conducted. Face, content, and construct validity using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used. Convergent and discriminant validity were also assessed. The reliability of the scale was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Results: Face validity was achieved. The content validity of items ranged from .83 to 1.00, while it was .96 for the overall scale. The exploratory factor analysis yielded a scale containing 28 items with a three‒factor model, explaining 74.5% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that three‒factor solution had an adequate model fit (CMIN/df = 1.98; RMSEA = .065; SRMR = .039, CFI = .972, and GFI = .968). Convergent validity and discriminant validity were achieved. Cronbach's alpha values were .89, .90, .90, and .96 for activism, caring, professionalism, and the overall scale, respectively. Conclusion: Adequate levels of reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the Nurses Professional Values Scale-three were established, indicating the appropriateness of using this version to assess the professional values among Saudi and other Arabic‒speaking nurses.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess nurses' knowledge and attitudes toward pain management in intensive care units (ICUs) in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational study was carried out at 5 governmental hospitals in the Al-Qassim region (namely, Buraydah Centeral Hospital, King Fahad Spcialist Hospital, Al Rass General Hospital, Bukariyah General Hospital, and Al Badaya General Hospital) using purposive sampling to collect data between May 2020 and July 2020. Nurses' awareness of pain management was assessed using the Nurses' Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (NKASRP). Statistical Pacaksge for the Social Sciences software was used for data analysis. Descriptive statistics were employed. The Spearman's correlation test was carried out to determine correlations. RESULTS: The mean score for ICUs nurses' pain management awareness was 22.59, suggesting knowledge and behaviors deficits toward pain management. Positive correlations were found between nurses' age, total years of clinical nursing experience, and their total score on pain management awareness. Nurses' gender, religion, education, and years of experience as ICU nurses showed no association with their scores on NKASRP. CONCLUSION: Insufficient pain management knowledge and unacceptable attitudes were established among nurses owing to several barriers and obstacles. Pain assessment and management educational programs should be held regularly for all nurses in the Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, especially ICU nurses.

RESUMO

Interprofessional education within healthcare has been shown to have many benefits, however, it is a relatively new educational concept within the Arabic setting. Although the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale is a commonly utilised tool to examine student attitudes, there is a lack of evidence for use of an Arabic translated version. The aim of this study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate an Arabic language version of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale with Saudi nurses. Two independent translators, proficient in both English and Arabic languages, completed a forward-backward translation of the original English version of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale. Subsequently, this Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale-Arabic version was used to collect data from undergraduate nursing students enrolled at a number of Saudi Arabian universities. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses were then performed on the scale. Six hundred and fifty-two participants were recruited. Exploratory Factor Analysis of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale-Arabic version resulted in a 15-item, three-factor model. Subsequent analysis with Confirmatory Factor Analysis and the resultant final 13-item model demonstrated a poor fit between the hypothesized model and the data. Although our three-factor model is supported by previous studies, the proposed model did not perform well on Confirmatory Factor Analysis assessment. This suggests that there may be issues of applicability of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale-Arabic version within the current cohort. The present study of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale-Arabic version has demonstrated some psychometric inadequacies and thus it is possible that this scale may not be appropriate for use with Saudi nurses. However further research with different professional groups is suggested to fully explore its utility within the Saudi setting.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In consideration of the current nursing shortage in Saudi Arabia, we aimed to investigate the association among perceptions of work environment, communication satisfaction, and intentions to quit nursing profession among nurses. In addition, we aimed to investigate the mediating effect of communication satisfaction on the association between nurses' perception of work environment and their intentions to quit nursing profession. METHODS: This predictive correlational study was conducted at one of the major hospitals in Saudi Arabia from January 2020 to March 2020. It included a convenience sample of 367 full-time registered nurses who completed three types of close-ended questionnaires. We used IBM SPSS version 24.0 to analyze the collected data. Regression analyses were used to test the study's hypotheses. All regression assumptions were assessed and confirmed. Significance for all tests was set at p ≤ .05. RESULTS: The findings indicated an affirmative association between work environment perception and communication satisfaction (b = .764, p < .05) among nurses. In addition, findings showed that work environment perception (b = -.187, p < .05) and communication satisfaction (b = -.226, p < .05) have negative impacts on the nurses' intentions to quit; indicating that as work environment perception or communication satisfaction increases, the intention to quit decreases among nurses. Further, a mediation effect of communication satisfaction on the relationship between work environment perception and intention to quit was confirmed. CONCLUSION: This study presents a novel conceptual framework developed based on the literature about the predisposing factors for nurses' intentions to quit nursing profession. Our results suggest that work environment perception and communication satisfaction among the most contributing factors for nurses resignation. Effective communication was established as a crucial factor for establishing attractive and healthy working environment. Nursing managers can benefit by applying these findings to develop appropriate strategies to inhibit the shortage of nurses in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

The Saudi government is currently facing multiple challenges in achieving "The Gold Standard" in nursing practice. This is not limited to educational challenges, staffing shortage, paucity of international and national benchmark evidence, absence of clear and defined scope of nursing practice, and lack of appropriate policies and regulations. This study presented a comprehensive plan for developing a policy based on current challenges, recognition of policy goals, assessment of potential options and alternatives, identification of stakeholders, proposition of recommended solutions, and implementation of the framework to transform nursing standards and link these changes with the Saudi Vision 2030. However, amendments are required in the present strategic plan for the better management of the nursing profession. It is doubtful that the current nursing profession status quo is capable of meeting the golden standards for health care. Thus, the transformation of the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia is necessary.

RESUMO

In recent years, the field of environmental health promotion gained new prominence as awareness of physical environmental stressors and exposures escalated in Saudi Arabia. Although, several theories and conceptual models are routinely used for guiding health education and promotion interventions, they are rarely applied to environmental health issues in Saudi Arabia. This study theoretically reviews the educational and behavioral models for promoting health in Saudi Arabia. This study examines how education and behavioral models can reduce exposure to environmental health risks. In particular, this article describes the application of ecological theory with regard to its theoretical, analytical, and methodological challenges to future research in educational and behavioral studies. The implications of ecological theory are discussed for environmental health promotion. Ecological theory can further demonstrate the dimensions of health behaviors such as procedures for changing them. Health behaviors are also affected by many forces such as physical and social environments. This theory can assist planners in identifying the most appropriate target audiences, methods to improve change, and consequences for assessment. This theory is also important in including social, cultural, and physical factors that affect health consequences, which include factors such as social cohesion, behavioral patterns, emotional wellbeing, genetic heritage, and developmental maturation.

RESUMO

Several challenges are involved in providing the appropriate treatment during the process of a patient's rehabilitation. Studies conducted in relation to the rehabilitation issues are ineffective in providing useful developments in the provided treatments. Most of the studies lack the utilization of theoretical framework which ultimately proposed weak findings. This study aimed to provide a theoretical framework in relation to the treatment theory as well as the enablement theory along with their effectiveness in improving rehabilitation treatments. The study involves a thorough review undertaking of published articles from 2014 to 2019 that were based on the rehabilitation and other health restoration measures through PubMed and Medline databases. Findings of the study were proposed in the form of a theoretical framework of treatment and the enablement theory. For rehabilitation and clinical researches, it is recommended to use treatment theory and enablement theory to propose unique results that may contribute to the improved healthcare treatment.
