RESUMO

Epoxidation of two butane isomers (1-butene and isobutene) on the commercial titanium silicate (TS-1) catalyst was studied in a laboratory-scale trickle bed reactor. The transient step response technique was used as the main tool in the investigation. The transient responses revealed different dynamics of product formation in continuous operation. The study of isomers showed the impact of the molecular structure on the transient and stationary states of the system. The four-carbon chain present in 1-butene displayed a dynamic behavior with a prominent maximum of the conversion as a function of time-on-stream. On the contrary, the behavior of isobutene was displayed to be closer to ethene and propene under similar conditions reaching a steady state after ca. 2 h. The structure of the epoxide was an important factor in order to achieve a high epoxide selectivity. In isobutene epoxidation, the primary product 1,2-epoxy-2-methylpropane was highly reactive, giving a spectrum of parallelly formed byproducts. Therefore, the selectivity of the epoxide from isobutene was limited to ca. 70%. In the epoxidation of 1-butene, 1,2-epoxybutane was displayed to be a highly stable product with a selectivity close to 99%. Based on the transient and stationary data, a reaction mechanism was proposed for the epoxidation and ring-opening reactions present in the system.

Background: Mental health problems among undergraduates are a significant public health concern. Most studies exploring mental health in this population during the pandemic have been conducted in high-income countries. Fewer studies come from Latin American countries. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and suicide risk, and explore the association with several relevant variables in personal, family, university, and SARS-CoV-2 pandemic domains. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Chile in a medium-size private University. Outcome variables were explored with valid instruments: Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Independent variables from personal (e.g., sex, age, sexual orientation, history of mental health problems, substance use), family (e.g., parental educational background, family history of mental health problems, family functioning), university (e.g., course year, financial support, psychological sense of university belonging, history of failing subjects) and SARS-CoV-2 domains (e.g., history of personal and family contagion, fear of contracting SARS-CoV-2, frequency of physical activity, keeping routines and social contact). Multivariable logistic regression models were conducted for each outcome, after univariable and domain-specific multivariable models. The significant variable at each step was selected if the p-value was ≤ 0.05. Results: A total of 5,037 students answered the survey-the global response rate of 63.5%. Most of the students were females (70.4%) and freshmen students (25.2%). The prevalence of mental health problems was high: depression (37.1%), anxiety (37.9%), and stress (54.6%). Insomnia was reported in 32.5% of students, and suicide risk in 20.4% of students. The associated variables at personal domain were history of mental health problems, substance use, and sexual orientation; at family domain, family functioning and family history of mental health problems; at university domain, violence victimization and sense of belonging; and in SARS-CoV-2 domain, having a daily routine and fear to contracting SARS-CoV-2 by students themselves or others. Conclusions: The prevalence of mental health problems is high among undergraduate students and some of the associated factors, such as victimization and a sense of belonging can be used in preventive interventions.

The current work focuses on studying the aqueous phase reforming (APR) of pine and birch hydrolysate obtained from waste wood by using organic acids available from biorefineries. Processing of representative synthetic mixtures was utilized in the work in order to support data interpretation related to the influence of different chemical compound and processing parameters on the APR of the actual hydrolysates. It was shown, that hydrogenation of the hydrolysates prior to APR was not feasible in the presence of formic acid, which ruled out one potential processing route. However, it was successfully demonstrated that birch and pine hydrolysates could be directly processed obtaining close to full conversion. The best results were obtained with tailored bimetallic Pd-Pt/sibunit catalyst in a trickle bed reactor system in the temperature range 175 °C-225 °C.

Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum L.) are the most cultivated and important vegetable crop in the world. These plants can wilt during crop growth due to fusarium wilt (fusariosis), a disease that damages tomato vascular systems. The Fusarium isolated and analyzed in this work correspond to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici. The isolates were molecularly identified, and analysis was done on the in vitro effects of the nanoemulsions (previously obtained from extracts of Chilean medicinal plants of the genera Psoralea and Escallonia) to inhibit mycelial and conidial germination of the isolates. Subsequently, the nanoemulsions were evaluated under greenhouse conditions for preventive control of fusariosis in the root and crown, with high levels of disease control observed using the highest concentrations of these nanoemulsions, at 250 and 500 ppm.

An evaluation of antioxidant and anticancer activity was screened in Leptocarpha rivularis DC flower extracts using four solvents (n-hexane (Hex), dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (AcOEt), and ethanol (EtOH)). Extracts were compared for total extract flavonoids and phenol contents, antioxidant activity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH), ferric reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP), total reactive antioxidant properties (TRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC)) across a determined value of reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), and cell viability (the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay). The most active extracts were analyzed by chromatographic analysis (GC/MS) and tested for apoptotic pathways. Extracts from Hex, DCM and AcOEt reduced cell viability, caused changes in cell morphology, affected mitochondrial membrane permeability, and induced caspase activation in tumor cell lines HT-29, PC-3, and MCF-7. These effects were generally less pronounced in the HEK-293 cell line (nontumor cells), indicating clear selectivity towards tumor cell lines. We attribute likely extract activity to the presence of sesquiterpene lactones, in combination with other components like steroids and flavonoids.
