Session ratings of perceived exertion (sRPE) are considered a practical marker of whole session exercise intensity, but its relationship to exercise volume has remained unclear. We analyzed the effects of exercise duration at different intensities on overall and differentiated sRPE. Sixteen males (Mage = 22.6, SD = 2.2 years; Mheight = 176.4, SD = 5.8 cm; Mweight = 74.0, SD = 5.9 kg; and Mbody fat = 9.4, SD = 2.2%) performed 15 and 30 minute runs at speeds associated with RPE levels of two (weak), three (moderate) and five (strong) on Borg's CR-10 scale during a previous graded exercise test. We used Foster's scale to access sRPE 30 minutes after each trial. Significant increases in sRPE were found with increases in running speed (p < 0.01, ηG2 = 0.48) and duration (p < 0.01, ηG2 = 0.16), with a significant speed X duration interaction (p < 0.01, ηG2 = 0.10). In addition, there was a significant effect for sRPE type (p = 0.01, ηG2 = 0.05) in that overall sRPE was slightly lower than sRPE differentiated to legs and higher than sRPE differentiated to breathing through the trials. Changes in sRPE from 15 to 30-minute trials were minimal for the slow speed and weak sRPE (Cohen´s dz = 0.04 - 0.25) but got higher at the moderate (Cohen´s dz = 0.88 - 1.06) and strong (Cohen´s dz = 1.94 - 2.50) speeds and sRPEs. Thus, exercise duration affects sRPE in an intensity dependent manner. This finding has practical relevance for prescribing exercise, suggesting a need to target specific training loads or aims to optimize trainees' retrospective perceptions of the exercise experience.

Objective: To compare the effects of intensity-matched acute exercise at different intensities on proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines between able-bodied (AB) and spinal cord injured (SCI) individuals.Design: Non-Randomized Controlled Trial.Setting: Community settings in São Paulo - Brazil.Participants: Eight AB and nine SCI paraplegic.Interventions: Participants underwent three exercise sessions at different relative intensities: at ventilatory threshold 1 intensity (VT1), 15% below VT1, and 15% above VT1. Similar energy expenditures were established from exercises with different intensities for each volunteer. The AB group was tested on a conventional treadmill, whereas the SCI group was tested on a treadmill adapted for wheelchair use. Blood samples were collected at baseline, immediately after, and 30 min after the exercise sessions.Outcome measures: Interleukin 1 receptor antagonist, interleukin 1 beta, interleukin 2, interleukin 4, interleukin 6, interleukin 10 and tumoral necrosis factor alpha were measured.Results: When groups were compared, interleukin - 2 was found higher, whereas interleukin - 4 and interleukin - 10 were found lower in the SCI group at all collection times in the three exercise intensities (all P < 0.05). Interleukin - 1 receptor antagonist was found higher immediately after exercise at VT1, 15% above VT1 and 30 min after 15% below VT1 in the AB group (all P < 0.05). In the AB group, an increase in interleukin - 6 immediately after the exercise at VT1 compared with baseline was found (P = 0.01).Conclusion: Individuals with SCI may have to perform physical exercise at a higher volume or energy expenditure than AB individuals to obtain similar anti-inflammatory benefits of acute exercise.Trial registration: Uniform Trial Number identifier: U1111-1232-8142.

The identification of the practitioner's profile regarding their motivation level for physical exercise engagement could be a behavioral strategy to increase exercise adherence. The present study investigates the associations between motivation levels, modalities practiced, and goals concerning the practice of physical exercise among physical exercise practitioners. A total of 100 physical exercise practitioners, of which 67 were women, took part in this study. The participants were engaged in extreme fitness program, strength training, fight training, Pilates, and functional training. Motivation level (BREQ-3) and expectations regarding regular physical exercise (IMPRAF-54) were assessed. A multiple correspondence analysis demonstrates preferential relationships between descriptive and non-inferential variables. Strength training and fight training practitioners seek these modalities with the goals of "Health" and "Aesthetics," demonstrating low autonomy in relation to the behavior for the practice of physical exercise. Extreme conditioning program and functional training practitioners have as goal "Pleasure," demonstrating medium and high levels of autonomy for such practice and Pilates practitioners have the goal of "Stress Control." To promote and encourage the regular practice of physical exercise, this strategy could be used to take actions that increase the public's intention to start or continue in a physical exercise program.

Body composition is a physiological variable associated with physical activity and, in some cases, is related to athletic performance. Our objectives were to describe the body composition of participants in three distinct Paralympic sports and to compare the values of body density and estimated body fat obtained from the Paralympic athletes on the National Team by air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) and by the anthropometric method (skinfolds (SFs)). The sample consisted of 70 volunteers of both genders. The body composition of the volunteers was evaluated using the ADP in a Bod Pod(®) and seven SFs. There were no significant differences between the values obtained by ADP and SF for body fat percentage (p = .58) and body density (p = .49). Analysis by Bland-Altman plots showed mean differences of 0.56 ± 4.94 (-9.12-10.23) and -0.0017 ± 0.0113 (-0.024-0.020) for body fat percentage and body density, respectively. In conclusion, body composition analyses of Paralympic athletes by the ADP and SF methods show similar results, and ADP should be used as the first option when available. When the use of ADP is not possible, estimating body density and fat percentage by SF is a viable alternative for Paralympic athletes when future comparisons will use the same analysis method.

OBJECTIVE: There are several treatments for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, such as weight loss, use of an oral appliance and continuous positive airway pressure, that can be used to reduce the signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of a physical training program compared with other treatments. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of physical exercise on subjective and objective sleep parameters, quality of life and mood in obstructive sleep apnea patients and to compare these effects with the effects of continuous positive airway pressure and oral appliance treatments. METHODS: Male patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and body mass indices less than 30 kg/m2 were randomly assigned to three groups: continuous positive airway pressure (n = 9), oral appliance (n = 9) and physical exercise (n = 7). Polysomnographic recordings, blood samples and daytime sleepiness measurements were obtained prior to and after two months of physical exercise or treatment with continuous positive airway pressure or an oral appliance. Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT01289392 RESULTS: After treatment with continuous positive airway pressure or an oral appliance, the patients presented with a significant reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index. We did not observe changes in the sleep parameters studied in the physical exercise group. However, this group presented reductions in the following parameters: T leukocytes, very-low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. Two months of exercise training also had a positive impact on subjective daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that isolated physical exercise training was able to modify only subjective daytime sleepiness and some blood measures. Continuous positive airway pressure and oral appliances modified the apnea-hypopnea index.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with a variety of long-term consequences such as high rates of morbidity and mortality, due to excessive diurnal somnolence as well as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Obesity, recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction, progressive hypoxemia, and sleep fragmentation during sleep cause neural, cardiovascular, and metabolic changes. These changes include activation of peripheral sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory cytokines alterations, which predispose an individual to vascular damage. DISCUSSION: Previous studies proposed that OSAS modulated the expression and secretion of inflammatory cytokines from fat and other tissues. Independent of obesity, patients with OSAS exhibited elevated levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6, which are associated with sleepiness, fatigue, and the development of a variety of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. OSAS and obesity are strongly associated with each other and share many common pathways that induce chronic inflammation. Previous studies suggested that the protective effect of exercise may be partially attributed to the anti-inflammatory effect of regular exercise, and this effect was observed in obese patients. Although some studies assessed the effects of physical exercise on objective and subjective sleep parameters, the quality of life, and mood in patients with OSAS, no study has evaluated the effects of this treatment on inflammatory profiles. In this review, we cited some studies that directed our opinion to believe that since OSAS causes increased inflammation and has excessive daytime sleepiness as a symptom and being that physical exercise improves inflammatory profiles and possibly OSAS symptoms, it must be that physical exercise improves excessive daytime sleepiness due to its improvement in inflammatory profiles.

FUNDAMENTO: O teste de exercício de 4 segundos (T4s) avalia o tônus vagal cardíaco durante o transiente inicial da frequência cardíaca (FC), em exercício dinâmico súbito, por meio da identificação do índice vagal cardíaco (IVC) obtido a partir do eletrocardiograma (ECG). OBJETIVO: Testar a utilização do monitor de frequência cardíaca (MFC) Polar S810 como recurso alternativo ao ECG na aplicação do T4s. MÉTODOS: Neste trabalho, 49 indivíduos do sexo masculino (25 ± 20 anos, 176 ± 12 cm, 74 ± 6 kg) realizaram o T4s. Os intervalos RR foram registrados simultaneamente por ECG e MFC. Calcularam-se média e desvio padrão do último intervalo RR do período pré-exercício ou o primeiro do período de exercício, aquele que for mais longo (RRB), do mais curto intervalo RR do período de exercício (RRC) e do IVC obtidos por ECG e MFC. Utilizou-se o teste t de Student para amostras dependentes (p < 0,05) para testar a significância das diferenças entre as médias. Para identificar a concordância entre o ECG e o MFC, utilizou-se a regressão linear, com cálculo do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson e a estratégia proposta por Bland e Altman. RESULTADOS: A regressão linear apresentou r² de 0,9999 para o RRB, 0,9997 para o RRC e 0,9996 para o IVC. A estratégia de Bland e Altman apresentou desvio padrão de 0,92 ms para o RRB, 0,86 ms para o RRC e 0,002 para o IVC. CONCLUSÃO: O MFC Polar S810 se mostrou eficiente na aplicação do T4s quando comparado ao ECG.

To identify the correlation between the ECG and the HRM, we used the linear regression to calculate the Pearson's correlation coefficient and the strategy proposed by Bland and Altman. RESULTS: Linear regression showed r² of 0.9999 for RRB, 0.9997 for RRC, and 0.9996 for CVI. Bland e Altman strategy presented standard deviation of 0.92 ms for RRB, 0.86 ms for RRC, and 0.002 for CVI. CONCLUSION: Polar S810 HRM was more efficient in the application of T4s compared to the ECG.
