Sleep is a vital process that impacts biological functions such as cell renewal, bone regeneration, and immune system support. Disrupted sleep can interrupt erythropoiesis, leading to fewer red blood cells, reduced haemoglobin concentration, and decreased haematocrit levels, potentially contributing to haematological disorders. This is particularly concerning for shift workers for example firefighters. While previous studies have explored sleep's adverse effects on various professions, research specific to firefighters is limited. This study investigates the relationship between sleep quality and haematological parameters among firefighters in Northeast Portugal. From a sample of 201 firefighters, variations in red blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit values were linked to sleep quality. The study utilised non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Spearman's correlation) to explore the connection between sleep quality and haematological profile. The impact of covariates on haematological parameters was assessed using non-parametric ANCOVA (Quade's). A multiple regression analysis was employed to further understand how sleep quality and various confounding variables impact haematological levels. Findings suggest a negative link between sleep quality and haematological levels, meaning that as sleep quality deteriorates, there is a tendency for haematological levels to decrease, as indicated by Spearman's correlation (rRBC = -0.157, pRBC = 0.026; rHb = -0.158, pHb = 0.025; rHCT = -0.175, pHCT = 0.013). As observed in scientific literature, the correlation found suggests a possible inhibition of erythropoiesis, the process responsible for red blood cell production. Despite firefighters presenting a haematological profile within the reference range (RBC: 5.1 × 106/mm3 (SD ± 0.4), Hb: 15.6 g/dL (SD ± 1.3), 47% (SD ± 1.0), there is already an observable trend towards lower levels. The analysis of co-variables did not reveal a significant impact of sleep quality on haematological levels. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of sleep quality in determining haematological parameters among firefighters. Future research should investigate the underlying mechanisms and long-term implications of poor sleep quality on firefighter health. Exploring interventions to enhance sleep quality is vital for evidence-based strategies promoting firefighter well-being.

BACKGROUND: Low physical performance is associated with higher mortality rate in multiple pathological conditions. Here, we aimed to determine whether body composition and physical performance could be prognostic factors in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. Moreover, we performed an exploratory approach to determine whether plasma samples from NSCLC patients could directly affect metabolic and structural phenotypes in primary muscle cells. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 55 metastatic NSCLC patients and seven age-matched control subjects. Assessments included physical performance, body composition, quality of life and overall survival rate. Plasma samples from a sub cohort of 18 patients were collected for exploratory studies in cell culture and metabolomic analysis. RESULTS: We observed a higher survival rate in NSCLC patients with high performance in the timed up-and-go (+320%; p = .007), sit-to-stand (+256%; p = .01) and six-minute walking (+323%; p = .002) tests when compared to NSCLC patients with low physical performance. There was no significant association for similar analysis with body composition measurements (p > .05). Primary human myotubes incubated with plasma from NSCLC patients with low physical performance had impaired oxygen consumption rate (-54.2%; p < .0001) and cell proliferation (-44.9%; p = .007). An unbiased metabolomic analysis revealed a list of specific metabolites differentially expressed in the plasma of NSCLC patients with low physical performance. CONCLUSION: These novel findings indicate that physical performance is a prognostic factor for overall survival in NSCLC patients and provide novel insights into circulating factors that could impair skeletal muscle metabolism.

The lowland Atlantic Forest, at altitudes of below 500 m, is highly fragmented, and is home to many threatened species of birds. The Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro has a high concentration of threatened birds in the Americas and is an important residual of the dense ombrophilous formations of the Atlantic Forest, which includes the Reserva Biológica União, a high priority area for conservation of Atlantic Forest birds. This study compiled empirical and secondary records of threatened birds in this reserve and discusses potential factors determining their local occurrence. Since 2008, regular observations, including transect surveys and mist-netting, in addiction to secondary data, have provided records of 306 bird species, of which 49 appear on red lists at some level (state, national or global), including 34 listed as endangered, of which 13 are listed globally, eight of them dependent on well-conserved lowland rainforest. Future studies should include new areas of the reserve, with the aim of confirming the presence of additional threatened species. The long-term conservation of this fauna will depend not only on the adequate management of the reserve, but also the reestablishment of its connectivity with adjacent forest fragments and upland areas in the state.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the intramucosal retention system in patients' masticatory efficiency and quality of life in this case series. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 3 individuals with maxillectomy were included for rehabilitation with a complete obturator prostheses with an intramucosal retention system (OPI). The complete obturator prostheses was made for 60 days, and electromyography assessments and bite force were applied before, after 30, 60, and 90 days of surgery and prostheses installation. The University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UW-QoL) and the Obturator Functional Scale (OFS) were also administered at baseline and in the same follow-up periods. The electromyography was evaluated on both sides of the masseter, temporalis, and buccinator muscles while chewing hard and soft food. The maximum bite force was recorded in the central incisors and both sides of the first molar region. RESULTS: Bite force values increased in the first molar region, and muscular electrical activity remained constant. Items related to the taste and swallowing of the UW-QOL impacted. Most OFS questionnaire data responses indicated that patients improved in swallowing liquid foods and appearance. CONCLUSIONS: The rehabilitative capacity improves masticatory efficiency and QoL in adults maxilectomized and rehabilitated with OPI analysis in the study. Further clinical studies should be encouraged to determine the effectiveness of this retentive system.

Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 µg/ L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%-96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%-99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased intl1, tetA, tetW, sul1 and qnrS gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, qnrS gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for Streptococcus and Clostridium, respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination.

PURPOSE: Present the step of evidence of validity based on the responses to procedures of the MMBGR Protocol Infants and Preschoolers: Instructional and Orofacial Myofunctional Clinical History. METHODS: Study developed according to phonoaudiologic tests validations recommendations. Validity analysis performed based on the process of instrument response. Ten speech therapists, that work on phonoaudiology clinic and/or orofacial myofunctional research on the population with age between 6 to 71 months, participated and applied the MMBGR Protocol Infants and Preschoolers: Instructional and Orofacial Myofunctional Clinical History with those responsible for the children. The speech therapists appraised the instrument applicability via Google®ï¸ electronic forms, containing dichotic and/or multiple-choice questions, and likert scale with space to justify negative answers. The data was tabulated on Microsoft Excel 2016®ï¸ worksheets and analyzed by the content validity index (CVI). The software R Core Team 2022 (Versão 4.2.2) was used. RESULTS: All items from the MMBGR Protocol Infants and Preschoolers: Instructional and Orofacial Myofunctional Clinical History were valid when applied to real contexts. Orofacial Myofunctional Clinic history protocol- IVC 100% in terms of ease of application and filling and usage in professional practice; IVC 90% in terms of usefulness for phonoaudiology clinic. The instructional got IVC 80% in terms of clinic usefulness and 70% regarding to the prior reading necessity to fill the MMBGR Protocol Infants and Preschoolers. CONCLUSION: The Instrucional and Orofacial Myofunctional Clinical History, in the MMBGR Protocol Infants and Preschoolers had its validity proven based on the processes of responses to the usage on phonoaudiology clinic.


OBJETIVO: Apresentar a etapa da evidência de validade baseada nos processos de respostas do Protocolo MMBGR Lactentes e Pré-escolares: Instrutivo e História Clínica Miofuncional Orofacial. MÉTODO: Estudo desenvolvido conforme recomendações para validação de testes em Fonoaudiologia. Realizada análise da validade baseada nos processos de resposta do instrumento. Participaram dez fonoaudiólogos, que atuam em clínica e/ou pesquisa da Motricidade Orofacial com população entre 6 e 71 meses de idade, que aplicaram o Protocolo MMBGR Lactentes e Pré-escolares: Instrutivo e História Clínica Miofuncional Orofacial junto aos responsáveis pelas crianças. Os fonoaudiólogos emitiram apreciação sobre aplicabilidade do instrumento via formulário eletrônico do Google®, contendo questões dicóticas e/ou múltipla escolha, e escala likert com espaço para justificar respostas negativas. Os dados foram tabulados em planilhas Microsoft Excel 2016® e analisados pelo Índice de Validade de Conteúdo (IVC). Utilizado software R Core Team 2022 (Versão 4.2.2). RESULTADOS: Todos os itens do Protocolo MMBGR Lactentes e Pré-escolares: Instrutivo e História Clínica Miofuncional Orofacial foram válidos na aplicação em contexto real. Protocolo de História Clínica Miofuncional Orofacial - IVC 100% quanto à facilidade de aplicação e preenchimento, e uso na prática profissional; e IVC 90% quanto à utilidade para clínica fonoaudiológica. O Instrutivo obteve IVC 80% quanto à utilidade e 70% referente à necessidade de leitura prévia para preenchimento do Protocolo MMBGR Lactentes e Pré-escolares. CONCLUSÃO: O Instrutivo e o Protocolo História Clínica Miofuncional Orofacial, pertencentes ao protocolo MMBGR ­ Lactentes e Pré-escolares tiveram comprovada validade baseada nos processos de resposta, para uso na clínica fonoaudiológica.

PURPOSE: Central and peripheral chemoreceptors are hypersensitized in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction. Whether this autonomic alteration occurs in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) remains little known. We test the hypothesis that the central and peripheral chemoreflex control of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is altered in HFpEF. METHODS: Patients aged 55-80 years with symptoms of heart failure, body mass index ≤ 35 kg/m2, left ventricular ejection fraction > 50%, left atrial volume index > 34 mL/m2, left ventricular early diastolic filling velocity and early diastolic tissue velocity of mitral annulus ratio (E/e' index) ≥ 13, and BNP levels > 35 pg/mL were included in the study (HFpEF, n = 9). Patients without heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (non-HFpEF, n = 9), aged-paired, were also included in the study. Peripheral chemoreceptors stimulation (10% O2 and 90% N2, with CO2 titrated) and central chemoreceptors stimulation (7% CO2 and 93% O2) were conducted for 3 min. MSNA was evaluated by microneurography technique, and forearm blood flow (FBF) by venous occlusion plethysmography. RESULTS: During hypoxia, MSNA responses were greater (p < 0.001) and FBF responses were lower in patients with HFpEF (p = 0.006). Likewise, MSNA responses during hypercapnia were higher (p < 0.001) and forearm vascular conductance (FVC) levels were lower (p = 0.030) in patients with HFpEF. CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral and central chemoreflex controls of MSNA are hypersensitized in patients with HFpEF, which seems to contribute to the increase in MSNA in these patients. In addition, peripheral and central chemoreceptors stimulation in patients with HFpEF causes muscle vasoconstriction.

PURPOSE: Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and function, is a common comorbidity in patients with heart failure (HF). The skeletal muscle modulates the respiratory response during exercise. However, whether ventilatory behavior is affected by sarcopenia is still unknown. METHODS: We enrolled 169 male patients with HF. Muscle strength was measured by a handgrip dynamometer. Body composition was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Sarcopenia was defined by handgrip strength <27 kg and appendicular lean mass divided by height squared (ALM/height 2 ) <7.0 kg/m 2 . Oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES), ventilation (VE), oxygen uptake (VO 2 ), and carbon dioxide output (VCO 2 ) were measured by a cardiopulmonary exercise test. RESULTS: Sarcopenia was identified in 29 patients (17%). At the first ventilatory threshold, VE/VO 2 (36.9 ± 5.9 vs 32.7 ± 6.5; P = .003) and VE/VCO 2 (39.8 ± 7.2 vs 35.3 ± 6.9; P = .004) were higher in patients with sarcopenia compared to those without sarcopenia. At the exercise peak, compared to patients without sarcopenia, patients with sarcopenia had lower OUES (1186 ± 295 vs 1634 ± 564; P < .001), relative VO 2 (16.2 ± 5.0 vs 19.5 ± 6.5 mL/kg/min; P = .01), and VE (47.3 ± 10.1 vs 63.0 ± 18.2 L/min; P < .0001), while VE/VCO 2 (42.9 ± 8.9 vs 38.7 ± 8.4; P = .025) was increased. OUES was positively correlated with ALM/height 2 ( r = 0.36; P < .0001) and handgrip strength ( r = 0.31; P < .001). Hemoglobin (OR = 1.149; 95% CI, 0.842-1.570; P = .038), ALM/height 2 (OR = 2.166; 95% CI, 1.338-3.504; P = .002), and VO 2peak (OR = 1.377; 95% CI, 1.218-1.557; P < .001) were independently associated with OUES adjusted by cofounders. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that sarcopenia is related to impaired ventilatory response during exercise in patients with HF.

This work presents a magnetic purification method of human erythrocyte Acetylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.7; AChE) based on affinity binding to procainamide (Proca) as ligand. Acetylcholinesterase is an acetylcholine-regulating enzyme found in different areas of the body and associated with various neurological disorders, such as Parkinson, Alzheymer and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. AChE from human erythrocyte purification has been attempted in recent years with low degree of purity. Here, magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) were synthesized and coated with polyaniline (PANI) and procainamide (PROCA) was covalently linked to the PANI. The extracted human erythrocyte AChE formed a complex with the MNP@PANI-PROCA and an external magnet separated it from the undesired proteins. Finally, the enzyme was collected by increasing the ionic strength. Experimental Box-Behnken design was developed to optimize this process of human erythrocyte AChE purification protocol. The enzyme was purified in all fifteen experiments. However, the best AChE purification result was achieved, about 2000 times purified, when 100 mg of MNP@PANI-PROCA was incubated for one hour with 4 ml hemolysate extract. The SDS-PAGE of this preparation presented a molecular weight of approximately 70 kDa, corroborating with few previous studies of AChE from erythrocyte purification.

INTRODUCTION: High blood pressure in hypertensive smokers is affected by nicotine consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of smoking cessation treatments on blood pressure in hypertensive smokers. METHODS: A total of 113 hypertensive smokers on antihypertensives during smoking cessation treatment in the randomized controlled trial GENTSMOKING were considered for analysis. At Baseline (T0) and Week 12 (T12), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), and heart rate (HR) were measured using a semi-automated digital oscillometric device. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and delta differences for SBP, DBP, HR, and MAP were calculated. Smoking cessation was confirmed by measuring carbon monoxide (CO) in exhaled air. RESULTS: After 12 weeks of treatment, 72 participants ceased smoking (cessation group) and 41 did not (no cessation group). At T0, there was no statistically meaningful difference between groups with respect to age, body mass index, CO, and daily cigarette consumption. At T12, daily cigarette consumption and CO had decreased in both groups (p<0.001). The cessation group showed decreased SBP (131 ± 2 vs 125 ± 2 mmHg, p=0.004), DBP (79 ± 1 vs 77 ± 1 mmHg, p=0.031), MAP (96 ± 1 vs 93 ± 1 mmHg, p=0.005), and HR (79 ± 1 vs 74 ± 1 beats/min, p=0.001), and increased body weight (77.4 ± 2.1 vs 79.2 ± 2.2 kg, p<0.001). No significant differences were seen for these variables in the no cessation group. Decrease in blood pressure was significantly higher among hypertensive participants with SBP ≥130 mmHg: SBP (145 ± 2 vs 132 ± 2 mmHg, p<0.001), DBP (85 ± 2 vs 80 ± 1 mmHg, p=0.002), MAP (105 ± 1 vs 97 ± 1 mmHg, p<0.001), and HR (81 ± 2 vs 74 ± 2 beats/min, p=0.002). A positive correlation was found between HR and CO (r=0.34; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Smoking cessation treatment reduced blood pressure in hypertensive smokers, allowing them to reach therapeutic targets for hypertension management. Smoking cessation has a positive impact on hypertension treatment; therefore, it should be encouraged in clinical practice. CLINICALTRIALSGOV IDENTIFIER: NCT03362099.

The journey of Brazilian female Paralympians transcends mere statistical increases in women's participation. Behind the modest athlete growth lies the reality of women who are doubly marginalized by the intersection of gender and disability in an arena tailored for able-bodied men. Our study aimed to catalyze critical discourses surrounding the historical trajectory of Paralympic women's sports. Through a comprehensive documentary analysis based on the Brazilian Paralympic Committee's official documents from 1976 to 2021, we sought to shed light on this complex scenario. Numerically, Brazil's representation comprised 229 women who, predominantly, had physical impairments and engaged in individual sports. In addition to a sporting legacy deeply entrenched in physical rehabilitation with limited opportunities for team-based sports, we observed negative influences stemming from ableist and sexist narratives. A thorough investigation into Paralympic milestones revealed a multitude of social barriers and highlighted the significant impact of societal changes in reshaping athletic opportunities and challenging traditional stereotypes.

The former mining district of Salsigne is situated in the Orbiel valley. Until the 20th century, it was the first gold mine in Europe and the first arsenic mine in the world. Rehabilitation has been performed during the 20 years that followed closure of the mines and factories, which led to the accumulation of storage of several million tons of waste in this valley. Nevertheless, a detailed description of the air quality of this area is still missing. The goal of the present study is to evaluate atmospheric contamination in the valley and identify the potential sources of this contamination. Active monitors (particulate matter samplers) and passive bioindicators (Tillandsia usneoides) were placed in strategic sites including remote areas. Over the year 2022, we assessed the air quality using microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, as well as environmental risk indicators to report the level of contamination. Results indicate that the overall air quality in the valley is good with PM10 levels in accordance with EU standards. Elemental concentrations in the exposed plants were lower than reported in the literature. Among the different sites studied, Nartau and La Combe du Saut, corresponding to waste storage and former mining industry sites, were the most affected. Chronic exposure over 1 year was highlighted for Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Sb and As. Pollution Load Index and Enrichment Factors, which provided valuable information to assess the environmental condition of the valley's air, suggested that dust and resuspension of anthropogenic materials were the principle sources for most of the elements. Finally, this study also highlights that using T. usneoides could be a convenient approach for biomonitoring of metal (loid)-rich particles in the atmosphere within a former mining area, for at least one year. Background: Non-germinomatous germ cell tumors (NGGCT) accounts for one third of intracranial GCT. While the germinoma group have an excellent overall survival, the standard of practice for children with NGGCT is still under evaluation. Aims: Describe the results of the of the Brazilian consortium protocol. Methods: Since 2013, 15 patients with a diagnosis of NGGCT by histopathology and/or serum/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tumor markers, ßHCG >200mlU/ml and/or positive alpha-fetoprotein were treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy with carboplatin, cyclophosphamide and etoposide followed by ventricular radiotherapy (RTV) of 18Gy with boost (32Gy) to the primary site. Metastatic patients underwent craniospinal irradiation (CSI) and "slow responders" to the four initial cycles of CT, to autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) followed by CSI. Results: Mean age, 13.1 years. Thirteen males. Primary sites: pineal (n=12), suprasellar (n=2) and bifocal (n=1). Four patients were metastatic at diagnosis. Eight patients had CSF and/or serum alpha-fetoprotein levels > 1,000ng/ml. Tumor responses after chemotherapy demonstrated complete in six cases and partial in seven, with "second-look" surgery being performed in five cases, and two patients presenting viable lesions being referred to ASCT. The main toxicity observed was hematological grades 3/4. Two patients with metastatic disease, one with Down Syndrome and AFP > 1,000ng/ml and the other with choriocarcinoma and pulmonary metastases, developed progressive disease resulting in death, as well as two other patients without evidence of disease, due to endocrinological disorders. Event-free and overall survival at 2 and 5 years were 80% and 72.7%, respectively, with a mean follow-up of 48 months (range, 7-107). Conclusions: Despite the small number of patients, in our series, treatment with six cycles of chemotherapy and RTV with focal boost for localized disease (n=11) and ACST for identified slow responders (n=2) seem to be effective strategies contributing to the overall effort to improve outcomes of this group of patients.

BACKGROUND: About 30% of patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder fail with the mainstream pharmacological treatment. Patients who do not achieve clinical remission of symptoms, even with two different antidepressants, are classified with treatment-resistant depression (TDR). This condition imposes an additional burden with increased Disability Adjusted Life Years. Therefore, complementary treatments, such as neuromodulation, are necessary. The transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) has emerged in the past few years as a reliable method for non-invasive neuromodulation in humans and may help treat TRD. This study aims to propose a research protocol for a non-inferiority randomized clinical trial of TDR with tFUS. METHODS: Patients with documented TRD will be screened upon entering the TRD outpatient clinic at UFMG (Brazil). One hundred patients without a clinical history of other psychiatric illness, anatomical abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or treatment with electroconvulsive therapy will be invited to participate. Patients will be randomized (1:1) into two groups: 1) treatment with a previously established protocol of transcranial magnetic stimulation; and 2) treatment with a similar protocol using the stimulation. Besides regular consultations in the outpatient clinic, both groups will attend 7 protocolled spaced days of brain stimulation targeted at the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. They will also be submitted to 4 sessions of image studies (2 MRIs, 2 positron-emission tomography), 3 of neuropsychological assessments (at baseline, 1 week and 2 months after treatment), the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale to analyze the severity of depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION: This clinical trial intends to verify the safety and clinical efficacy of tFUS stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of patients with TRD, compared with a previously established neuromodulation method.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the environmental factors of children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) in the state of Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study involving 164 caregivers of children/adolescents with CP, aged 1-14 years. The Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) were used to classify the participants' functioning, and environmental factors were evaluated by an on-line questionnaire that examined products and technologies, physical environment, services, and systems. A descriptive analysis was performed using percentage and frequency. RESULTS: Most participants had bilateral CP (66.9%) and 45% of them were spastic. Levels II and V of the GMFCS and MACS were the most frequent. About half (49.4%) used anticonvulsants, 27.4% underwent botulinum toxin application, and 29% went through orthopedic surgery in the lower limbs. Among the participants, 71.3% used orthoses in the lower limbs, and 51.8% used the public health care system. Most had access to physiotherapy (91.5%), but found difficulties to access interventions with other professionals, such as psychologists (28%) and nutritionists (37.8%). The school was the most frequently adapted environment (78%), and had the highest level of structural adaptation (42.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the barriers to access health services and barriers to the physical environment may impact participation and social inclusion.

In 2019, an oil spill hit the Brazilian Northeast coast causing impact to several ecosystems, including sea turtles' breeding and feeding areas. This study aimed to investigate whether sea turtles were impacted by this oil disaster, correlating the oil found inside feces with a sandy-oiled sample collected on the beach some days after the accident. The fecal samples were collected in the upper mid-littoral reef areas during three consecutive days in February 2020. The results suggested that sea turtles consumed algae contaminated by petroleum. Hydrocarbons composition of oil inside feces was similar to the sandy-oiled sample, suggesting they were the same. Lighter aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic compounds were missing, indicating both sandy-oiled and oil inside the feces had experienced significant evaporation prior to collection. Although the long-term damage is still unknown, the data are novel and relevant to support future research and alert authorities about the risks to sea turtles.

BACKGROUND: Arterial stiffness is an important marker of cardiovascular disease, with a considerable increase in menopause. The impact of exercise, as a preventive measure, on controlling the progression of cardiovascular disease and arterial dysfunction in middle age remains under investigation. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to present the results of studies that examined the effects of different exercise programs (isolated, aerobic, and resistance or combined) on arterial stiffness and cardiorespiratory fitness in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Based on PRISMA guidelines, B-On, BioMed, EBSCOhost, MEDLINE, ScienceOpen, PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane library and LILACS databases were searched using specific keywords. RESULTS: A final total of 13 manuscripts were included in the qualitative synthesis, involving 700 participants. Four studies used only cardiorespiratory exercise, three only resistance, taekwondo class or flexibility exercise, and six combined exercise programs. Most interventions ranged from 3 to 5 days per week. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity showed improvements between 0.22 m/s and 1.56 m/s. In addition, one study showed an improvement of 4.4 ml/kg/min in maximal oxygen consumption. In 7 studies, participation in exercise programs improved arterial stiffness. CONCLUSIONS: Combined exercise (aerobic and resistance exercise) and aerobic exercise alone (swimming) improve cardiorespiratory fitness and arterial stiffness in postmenopausal women, particularly pulse wave velocity. The combined exercise program is the most effective, promoting improvements of up to -2.6 m/s in pulse wave velocity in this climacteric phase.

The search for Golgi α-mannosidase II (GMII) potent and specific inhibitors has been a focus of many studies for the past three decades since this enzyme is a key target for cancer treatment. α-Mannosidases, such as those from Drosophila melanogaster or Jack bean, have been used as functional models of the human Golgi α-mannosidase II (hGMII) because mammalian mannosidases are difficult to purify and characterize experimentally. Meanwhile, computational studies have been seen as privileged tools able to explore assertive solutions to specific enzymes, providing molecular details of these macromolecules, their protonation states and their interactions. Thus, modelling techniques can successfully predict hGMII 3D structure with high confidence, speeding up the development of new hits. In this study, Drosophila melanogaster Golgi mannosidase II (dGMII) and a novel human model, developed in silico and equilibrated via molecular dynamics simulations, were both opposed for docking. Our findings highlight that the design of novel inhibitors should be carried out considering the human model's characteristics and the enzyme operating pH. A reliable model is evidenced, showing a good correlation between Ki/IC50 experimental data and theoretical ΔGbinding estimations in GMII, opening the possibility of optimizing the rational drug design of new derivatives.Communicated by Ramaswamy H.
