RESUMO

Improving reproductive performance is one of the most important factors affecting the profitability of dairy herds. This study investigated the effect of feeding a high starch (HS) diet and body condition score (BCS) at calving on blood metabolites, fertility and ovarian function and milk production in Holstein dairy cows. One hundred seventy-four multiparous cows were fed common close-up and early lactation diets during the first 15 days in milk (DIM). Cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 experimental diets from 16 until 50 DIM (n = 87 per group); normal starch (228 g/kg diet DM; NS) or HS (270 g/kg diet DM; HS) diets. Each treatment group was further subdivided based on BCS at calving as normal BCS (BCS ⩽ 3.5; normal BCS (NBCS); n = 45) or high BCS (HBCS) (BCS ⩾ 3.75; HBCS; n = 42). A significant difference was detected for increased milk production (47.24 v. 44.55 kg/day) and decreased milk fat (33.93 v. 36.33 g/kg) in cows fed HS or NS, respectively. Plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher in cows fed the HS compared to the NS diet. Diets significantly affected DIM at first artificial insemination (AI, 79.51 ± 3.83 v. 90.40 ± 3.83 days for cows fed HS and NS diets, respectively). High BCS groups had greater milk fat content and elevated plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), ß hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and bilirubin concentrations. In general, feeding higher starch diets to normal BCS cows during the first 50 DIM improved productive and reproductive performance of early-lactating dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to examine the interaction between levels of dietary crude protein (CP) pre- and postpartum on feed intake, performance, and metabolic status of dairy cows with a 14-d close-up experimental period. Forty multiparous Holstein cows were blocked by expected calving date and previous lactation milk yield at -14 d relative to expected calving and randomly allocated to receive either a 12.5% CP diet with 3.3% rumen undegraded protein (RUP; 12pre) or a 15.2% CP diet with 5% RUP (15pre) based on dry matter (DM). From d 1 to 21 postpartum, cows within each prepartum group were randomly assigned to receive either a 16.1% CP diet with 4.9% RUP (16post) or a 18.6% CP diet with 6.8% RUP (19post) based on DM. The experiment was conducted as a split-plot design, with CP prepartum being the whole-plot factor and CP postpartum as the subplot factor. Diets were similar in net energy for lactation, and CP levels were increased by replacing grain with a combination of corn gluten meal and fish meal. In prepartum, cows fed the 15pre diet tended to consume more DM than cows fed the 12pre diet (9.65 vs. 9.30 kg/d). Except for blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration, no other blood metabolite in prepartum was affected by diets. The interaction between pre- and postpartum CP levels showed that elevating dietary CP from 16post to 19post increased DM intake (15.20 vs. 17.67 kg/d) and milk yield (35.16 vs. 40.26 kg/d) in 12pre cows but not in 15pre cows. Milk fat, protein, and lactose contents were not affected by the interaction between pre- and postpartum CP levels. Feeding 19post compared with 16post increased milk protein (1.28 vs. 1.08 kg/d) and lactose (1.86 vs. 1.61 kg/d) yields in 12pre cows, whereas this effect was not observed in 15pre cows. Milk urea nitrogen was elevated when dietary CP increased from 16post to 19post in 15pre cows (12.98 vs. 14.84 mg/dL) but not in 12pre cows. The concentrations of BUN were greater in 19post cows than in 16post cows for both 12pre (16.31 vs. 13.81 mg/dL) and 15pre (18.44 vs. 14.71 mg/dL) cows. The 19post cows had lower serum fatty acids than 16post cows (0.65 vs. 0.96 mmol/L) in 12pre but not in 15pre. However, a reduction in serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) concentration was observed in 19post cows compared with 16post cows (68.30 vs. 98.24 U/L) when cows were fed 12pre. For cows fed 15pre, those fed 19post had higher serum AST levels than those fed 16post (86.61 vs. 67.74 U/L) during 21 d of lactation. Body weight and body condition score changes were not affected by interactive effects between pre- and postpartum CP levels, but 19post cows tended (-0.30 vs. -0.45) to have smaller body condition score losses than 16post cows when fed the 12pre diet. Overall, increasing dietary CP postpartum from 16 to 19% DM improved performance and metabolic status of cows fed 12% CP prepartum. The lack of responses to increased dietary CP postpartum in cows fed 15% CP prepartum suggests that dietary CP postpartum could decrease to 16% DM when cows are fed higher dietary CP prepartum.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the ratio of rumen-degradable protein (RDP) to rumen-undegradable protein (RUP) and corn processing method on production performance, nitrogen (N) efficiency, and feeding behavior of high-producing Holstein dairy cows. Twelve multiparous Holstein cows (second parity; milk yield = 48 ± 3 kg/d) were assigned to a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Factor 1 was corn processing method [ground corn (GC) or steam flaked corn (SFC) with a flake density of about 390 g/L], and factor 2 was RDP:RUP ratio [low ratio (LR) = 60:40; high ratio (HR) = 65:35] based on crude protein (%). The crude protein concentrations were kept constant across the treatments (16.7% of DM). No significant interactions of main treatment effects occurred for lactation performance data. Cows fed 2 different RDP:RUP ratios exhibited similar dry matter intake (DMI), but those fed SFC showed decreased feed intake compared with those receiving GC (25.1 ± 0.48 vs. 26.2 ± 0.47 kg/d, respectively). Cows fed HR diets produced more milk than did those fed LR diets (44.4 ± 1.05 vs. 43.2 ± 1.05 kg/d, respectively). Milk fat content decreased but milk protein content increased in cows fed SFC compared with those fed GC. Feed efficiency (i.e., milk yield/DMI) was enhanced with increasing ratio of RDP:RUP (1.68 ± 0.04 vs. 1.74 ± 0.04 for LR and HR, respectively). Apparent N efficiency was higher in cows fed HR than in those fed LR (30.4 ± 0.61 vs. 29.2 ± 0.62, respectively). Compared with cows fed the GC-based diet, those receiving SFC exhibited lower values of N intake, N-NH3 concentration, and fecal N excretion. Cows receiving SFC-based diets spent more time ruminating (min/kg of DMI) than did those fed GC. Although these results showed no interaction effects of RDP:RUP ratio and corn processing method on performance, higher RDP:RUP ratios and ground corn can be effective feeding strategies for feed to lactating cows receiving high-concentrate diets.

The study objective was to evaluate the effects of reducing dietary starch content in fresh cow diets while maintaining NDF levels by substituting barley grain (BG), corn silage (CS), or both with beet pulp (BP) on nutrient digestion, ruminal fermentation, DMI, lactation performance, meal patterns, chewing activity, and sorting behavior. Thirty-six multiparous cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental diets from calving to 21 d in lactation. Experimental diets were a high-starch diet with ground BG (CO; 24.9% starch; 0% BP) and 3 low-starch diets: the CO with BP substituted for ground BG (BB; 19.6% starch; 7% BP), the CO with BP substituted for CS (BC; 20.6% starch; 12% BP), or the CO with BP substituted for CS and ground BG (BCB; 20.3% starch; 12% BP). The CO, BB, BC, and BCB contained 33.4, 34.4, 32.9, and 33.7% NDF, respectively, and 23.1, 22.0, 18.2, and 19.2% forage NDF, respectively. There was no effect of diet on total tract nutrient digestibility ( > 0.20), ruminal pH ( = 0.49), or total VFA ( = 0.39). However, diets affected molar proportions of propionate and acetate ( ≤ 0.01). Relative to CO cows, the molar propionate percentage was less in BB cows ( < 0.01) and tended to be greater in BC cows ( = 0.10), whereas the molar percentage of acetate was less in BC cows than in BB ( < 0.01) and CO cows ( = 0.02). Relative to CO cows (16.50 kg/d), DMI was greater for BC (17.70 kg/d; < 0.01) and BCB cows (17.50 kg/d; = 0.01), but it was less in BB cows (15.60 kg/d; = 0.02). Similar to DMI results, milk yields tended to be greater for BC (37.89 kg/d; = 0.08) and BCB cows (37.81 kg/d; = 0.09) compared with CO cows (35.41 kg/d), but BB cows (33.05 kg/d) tended to produce less milk than CO cows ( = 0.1). Milk fat content tended to be less in BC ( = 0.08) and BCB cows ( = 0.10) than in CO cows. There was no effect of diet on eating and rumination patterns ( ≥ 0.18), except shortened meal intervals for BC and BCB cows compared with CO cows ( = 0.02). Dietary treatments did not affect chewing activities per day or bout ( = 0.50), but BC and BCB cows spent less time on chewing activities per kilogram DM ( < 0.01) and NDF intake ( < 0.01) compared with CO cows. Cows fed the BC and BCB sorted for long particles (>19 mm; < 0.01) but against particles < 1.18 mm ( < 0.01). In the present study, propionate did not seem to play a central role in feed intake regulation of fresh cows, because BB cows had depressed DMI and the lowest molar proportion of propionate. However, reducing starch levels in fresh cow diets by replacing CS and both CS and BG with BP positively affected DMI and milk yield.

This experiment was conducted to compare conventional (CON; 21 d) and shortened (SH; 10 d) close-up period, and evaluate the effect of shortened close-up period combined with feeding different metabolizable protein (MP) levels on dry matter (DM) intake, metabolic status, and performance of dairy cows. Forty-eight multiparous Holstein cows with similar parity, body weight (BW), and previous lactation milk yield were divided into 2 groups. The first group (n = 24) received the far-off diet from -60 to -21 d (CON), and the second group (n = 24) received same far-off diet from -60 to -10 d (SH) relative to expected parturition. Cows were then moved to individual stalls and randomly allocated to 1 of 3 close-up diets: low MP diet (LMP; MP = 79 g/kg of DM), medium MP diet (MMP; MP = 101 g/kg of DM), or high MP diet (HMP; MP = 118 g/kg of DM). Treatments were used in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with 2 lengths of close-up period (CON and SH) and 3 levels of MP (LMP, MMP, and HMP). All diets were fed for ad libitum intake during the close-up period. After calving, all cows received the same fresh cow diet. We found no interaction between close-up period length and MP levels for traits, except for postpartum serum fatty acids and ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). The concentrations of postpartum serum fatty acids and BHB were higher on LMP than MMP and HMP diets in SH group. The cows of the SH group tended to produce less colostrum in the first milking than cows in CON group. The length of close-up period did not affect pre- and postpartum DM intake or energy balance of cows during the last week of prepartum, but cows of the CON group had greater BW changes during the last 3 wk before parturition than cows in SH group. Cows fed MMP and HMP diets consumed 1.2 and 1 kg more DM than for those fed LMP prepartum, respectively. The concentrations of prepartum BHB and Ca were higher for SH cows than CON group cows. Except for blood urea N concentration, no other blood metabolite in prepartum was affected by dietary MP. We found no effects of close-up period length or MP levels in the close-up diet on urinary pH, purine derivative excretion, and microbial N flow. Postpartum, milk yield was not affected by close-up period length, but cows in CON group tended to have higher 4% fat-corrected milk yield, had higher milk fat content and yield, had greater BW and body condition score loss, and higher energy negative balance than cows in the SH group. Cows fed MMP diet ate 1.8 kg more DM and yielded 3.37 kg more milk than those fed the LMP diet. Milk fat, protein, and lactose content, milk urea N, and somatic cell count were not affected by MP levels, but the yield of milk protein and lactose were higher on MMP diet than on LMP diet. Concentrations of postpartum serum fatty acids and BHB were decreased by shortening the close-up period length, but glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride were similar between close-up groups. During the postpartum period, serum fatty acids, BHB, aminotransferase, and Ca concentrations were decreased by increasing the MP levels in the close-up diet. It appears from this data set that multiparous cows will benefit from a shortened close-up period, and feeding a moderate MP diet could improve DM intake, milk yield, and metabolic status of periparturient dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of feeding increased dietary crude protein (CP) on productive performance and indicators of protein and energy metabolism during 21 d postpartum. Thirty multiparous Holstein dairy cows were balanced by previous lactation milk yield, body condition score (BCS) at calving, and parity and randomly allocated to 1 of 3 dietary treatments from calving until 21 d postpartum. Dietary treatments were 16.0% CP with 5.0% rumen undegradable protein (RUP) based on dry matter (DM) (16CP), 18.7% CP with 7.0% RUP based on DM (19CP), and 21.4% CP with 9.0% RUP based on DM (21CP). Diets were similar in net energy for lactation (approximately 1.7 Mcal/kg of DM) and CP levels were increased with corn gluten meal and fish meal. Dry matter intake (DMI) was increased by increasing dietary CP levels from 16.0 to 19.0% of DM, but dietary CP beyond 19.0% had no effect on DMI. Milk yields were 4.7 and 6.5 kg/d greater in cows fed the 19CP and 21CP diets versus those fed the 16CP diet, whereas 4% fat-corrected milk was greater for cows fed the 21CP than the 16CP diet (36.0 vs. 31.4 kg/d). Milk protein content and yield, lactose yield, and milk urea nitrogen were elevated by increased dietary CP. Milk lactose content and fat yield were not different among dietary treatments, but milk fat content tended to decline with increasing content of CP in diets. High CP levels increased milk N secretion but decreased milk N efficiency. Apparent digestibility of DM, CP, and neutral detergent fiber was greater on the 19CP and 21CP diets compared with the 16CP diet. Cows fed the 19CP and 21CP diets lost less body condition relative to those fed the 16CP diet over 21 d postpartum. Feeding higher CP levels increased the concentrations of serum albumin, albumin to globulin ratio, and urea nitrogen and decreased aspartate aminotransferase, nonesterified fatty acids, and ß-hydroxybutyrate, but had no effect on globulin, glucose, cholesterol, or triacylglycerol. These findings indicated that elevating dietary CP up to 19.0% of DM using RUP supplements improved DMI, productive performance and the indicators of protein and energy metabolism from calving to 21 d postpartum.

The objective of this study was to determine effects of subcutaneous (s.c.) infusions of Ca at calving day on serum concentrations of Ca, P, Mg, ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), glucose, body condition score (BCS), milk yield, and health in fresh cows receiving a dietary cation-anion difference diet during the dry period. Three hundred seventy-five fresh Holstein cows were blocked based on parity (143 cows in first parity, 108 cows in second parity, and 124 cows in third or greater parity) and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental treatments immediately after calving. Treatments were control group without infusion (control; n=190); 1 s.c. infusion of 250mL of 40% Ca borogluconate (1SC250; n=72) at calving; 1 s.c. infusion of 500mL of 40% Ca borogluconate (1SC500; n=63) at calving; 2 s.c. infusions of 250mL of 40% Ca borogluconate, one immediately after calving and the second 12 to 18h after first infusion (2SC250; n=50). Blood samples were collected immediately after parturition and at 1, 2, 4, and 7d in milk (DIM) for Ca, P, and Mg determination. Milk production, milk composition, and somatic cell count were recorded monthly up to 90 DIM. The evaluation of BCS was performed at calving and at 38 DIM. A subset of 9 cows per treatment group was randomly chosen to measure serum concentration of glucose and BHB at 2, 4, and 7 DIM. Total serum Ca in 1SC250 (8.95mg/dL), 1SC500 (9.27mg/dL), and 2SC250 (9.07mg/dL) was greater during the first week postpartum compared with control (8.45mg/dL). Serum concentrations of P, Mg, BHB, glucose, and milk yield were not affected by treatments. The dry matter intake during the first 24h after calving was higher for treatments 1SC250 (13.5kg), 1SC500 (15.0kg), and 2SC250 (15.6kg) relative to control (12.5kg). Milk somatic cell counts were lower for 1SC500 (90.5 cells/mL) and 2SC250 (82.2 cells/mL) than control (132.8 cells/mL). Risk ratio was >1 for development of metritis, and clinical and subclinical endometritis in control cows relative to 2SC250 cows, which indicates a higher risk of developing disease for control cows (2.03, 1.7, and 1.8 times, respectively). These results suggest that prophylactic s.c. infusions of Ca at calving can improve postpartum Ca status in Holstein cows and intake at 1 DIM. Given the reduction of metritis, clinical and subclinical endometritis, and subclinical hypocalcemia with treatment, the effect of s.c. Ca supplementation on immune status warrants further investigation.

Thirty-two Afshari lambs were used in a completely randomized design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to evaluate a nutritional supplement designed to provide multiple gluconeogenic precursors during heat stress (HS). Lambs were housed in thermal neutral (TN) conditions and fed ad libitum for 8 d to obtain covariate data (period 1 [P1]) for the subsequent experimental period (period 2 [P2]). During P2, which lasted 9 d, half of the lambs were subjected to HS and the other 16 lambs were maintained in TN conditions but pair fed (PFTN) to the HS lambs. Half of the lambs in each thermal regime were fed (top-dressed) 100 g/d of a feed supplement designed to provide gluconeogenic precursors (8 lambs in HS [heat stress with Glukosa {HSG}] and 8 lambs in PFTN [pair-fed thermal neutral with Glukosa]) and the other lambs in both thermal regimes were fed only the basal control diet (HS without Glukosa [HSC] and pair-fed thermal neutral without Glukosa). Heat stress decreased DMI (14%) and by design there were no differences between the thermal treatments, but HSG lambs had increased DMI (7.5%; < 0.05) compared with the HSC lambs. Compared with PFTN lambs, rectal temperature and skin temperature at the rump, shoulder, and legs of HS lambs were increased ( < 0.05) at 0700 and 1400 h. Rectal temperature at 1400 h decreased for HSG lambs (0.15 ± 0.03°C; < 0.05) compared with HSC lambs. Despite similar DMI between thermal treatments, ADG for HS and PFTN lambs in P2 was decreased 55 and 85%, respectively, compared with lambs in P1 ( < 0.01). Although the prefeeding glucose concentration was not affected by thermal treatment or diet, HSG lambs had increased postfeeding glucose concentration compared with HSC lambs ( < 0.05). In contrast to the glucose responses, circulating insulin was influenced only by thermal treatment; HS lambs had increased insulin concentration ( < 0.01) before feeding and decreased concentration ( < 0.05) after feeding compared with PFTN lambs. Heat-stressed lambs had decreased NEFA concentration before feeding ( < 0.01) but not after feeding relative to PFTN lambs. Although this nutritional strategy did not affect ADG, the lower rectal temperature in HSG lambs indicates that dietary inclusion of a mixture of glucogenic precursors can potentially benefit animal health during HS.

Introducing forage in dairy calf diets during the preweaning period stimulates development of rumen capacity and function and gut wall integrity. It was hypothesized that calves fed alfalfa hay (AH) at greater levels (up to 25% of DM) would result in an increase in starter diet intake and growth performance. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of increasing levels of supplemental AH on growth performance, rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, and feeding behavior in intact male dairy calves. For this purpose, 45 Holstein male calves (3 d of age and 41 ± 2.5 kg of BW) were randomly assigned to 1 of the following 3 starter diets differing in their forage level: 1) diet without AH (control), 2) diet with 12.5% AH on a DM basis, and 3) diet with 25% AH on a DM basis. Supplementation of AH in the starter diets linearly increased total DMI and ADG during the postweaning ( < 0.01) and overall ( = 0.02) periods. Alfalfa hay supplementation linearly increased ( < 0.01) ruminal pH on d 35 and 70 of the study. The concentrations of total VFA ( = 0.85), acetate ( = 0.74), propionate ( = 0.93), and butyrate ( = 0.91) were not affected by treatments. Furthermore, forage supplementation tended (linearly, = 0.08) to increase the acetate to propionate ratio compared with the control calves. Blood ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations in the control calves were less ( = 0.03) than in the AH-fed calves on d 70 of the study. Among all the measured variables of skeletal growth, supplementation of AH in the starter diets linearly increased heart girth ( = 0.05) and abdominal girth ( < 0.01) on d 70 of the study. These results indicate that the feed intake, feeding behavior, rumen fermentation parameters, and blood BHBA concentration may be affected by rations differing in AH level so that providing calves with 25% AH can improve calf performance.

To distinguish between the direct effects of heat stress (HS) and reduced DMI on metabolic and physiological variables, morphometry, and gene expression of transporters involving in ruminal VFA absorption, 16 Holstein bull calves (178.1 ± 7.55 kg of BW) were used in a randomized complete design using 2 experimental periods. In period 1 (P1), all animals were housed in thermoneutral (TN) conditions (20.7 ± 3.0°C and a temperature-humidity index [THI] of 65.2 ± 3.1) and fed ad libitum for 8 d. In period 2 (P2; 9 d), half of the calves ( = 8) were subjected to HS condition (29.9 to 41.0°C and a THI ≥ 85 for 8 h/d) and the other half ( = 8) were maintained in TN conditions but were pair fed (pair-fed thermoneutral [PFTN]) to the HS calves. Heat stress decreased DMI (20%; < 0.01) and, by design, PFTN calves had similar reduced intakes. During P1, ADG was similar between groups (1.7 kg/d), but ADG was reduced similarly for both groups (0.14 kg/d) during P2 ( < 0.01). Compared with P1, HS calves had decreased plasma glucose levels (12.5%; < 0.01) in P2. Basal insulin levels increased in P2 for HS calves (71%; < 0.03), but there was no difference between periods for PFTN calves. Circulating NEFA concentrations did not differ between periods in the HS calves, but PFTN animals had increased basal NEFA levels (100%; < 0.01). Compared with P1, HS calves had increased blood urea nitrogen concentration in P2 ( < 0.01) but blood urea nitrogen did not differ between periods in the PFTN calves. Heat stress had no measurable effect on nutrient digestibility. Rumen papillae height increased (51%; < 0.04) in HS calves whereas papillae top width decreased (40%; < 0.03), but there was no difference between treatments for other morphometric parameters. Gene expression of VFA transporters in rumen epithelium was not affected by thermal treatments. These results confirmed that short-term HS in the current study had no effect on diet digestibility, rumen morphology, or VFA transporters genes. Therefore, HS-induced decrease in DMI is in large part responsible for gross changes in BW in growing calves (albeit tissue composition of growth is not unknown).

This study evaluated the effects of particle size (PS) and dietary level of alfalfa hay (AH) on rumen fermentation parameters, blood metabolites, eating behavior, and growth performance in dairy calves during transition from liquid to solid feed. Sixty newborn dairy calves (41 ± 2.5,kg of body weight) were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with the factors dietary AH level (medium, 12.5%, or high, 25%, on DM basis) and PS (fine = 1mm or medium = 3mm, as geometric means) of AH. Hence, the dietary treatments were (1) medium level of AH with fine PS (M-FPS), (2) medium level of AH with medium PS (M-MPS), (3) high level of AH with fine PS (H-FPS), and (4) high level of AH with medium PS (H-MPS). Particle size of AH did not affect total DMI (TDMI) during the preweaning period, although TDMI was greater for calves fed MPS than in those fed FPS during the postweaning and overall periods. Calves fed MPS spent more time eating solid feed and ruminating and less time on nonnutritive oral behaviors compared with FPS calves. The dietary level of AH did not affect behavioral parameters. Average daily gain of calves was not affected by dietary treatment before weaning. During the postweaning and overall periods, average daily gain was greater in calves fed MPS than in those fed FPS at the 25% AH level, but this effect was absent with 12.5% AH. Furthermore, the rumen pH values on d 35 and 70 of the study were greater for MPS than for FPS, regardless of the dietary level of AH. Effects of AH level, PS, and their interaction did not affect blood glucose concentrations in developing calves. These results indicate that feed intake, feeding behavior, rumen fermentation parameters, and blood ß-hydroxybutyrate concentration may be affected by rations differing in forage PS; thus, providing calves with MPS can improve calf performance and reduce their nonnutritive oral behaviors.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of different durations of n-3 supplementation during the peripartal period on production and reproduction performance of Holstein dairy cows. Thirty-two Holstein dry cows (16 multiparous and 16 primiparous) were blocked within parity for similar expected calving dates 8 wk before calving. Cows within blocks were assigned randomly to 1 of 4 treatments: (1) control without n-3 fatty acid (FA) supplementation during the dry period; (2) n-3 FA supplementation during the whole dry period (8 wk); and (3) n-3 FA supplementation during the early dry period (first 5 wk; far-off), or (4) n-3 FA supplementation during the late dry period (last 3 wk; close-up). All cows received the same diet without n-3 FA after calving for the first 6 wk of lactation. Ovaries of each cow were examined 10, 17, 24, and 34 d from calving (calving=d 0) by transrectal ultrasonography to determine follicular development. Blood samples were collected at 14-d intervals starting on the first day of the dry period (8 wk before expected calving) to determine plasma concentrations of glucose, ß-hydroxybutyrate, nonesterified fatty acids, urea N, aspartate aminotransferase, and insulin. Blood samples were also collected on d 1, 10, 17, 24, 31, and 38 postpartum for determination of progesterone concentration. Milk yield was recorded daily throughout the experiment and samples were taken twice weekly (Monday and Thursday mornings) for analysis of fat, protein, and lactose. Yields of milk and 4% fat-corrected milk and milk composition were similar among treatments except for fat proportion, which tended to be lower in cows that were fed n-3 FA throughout the dry period. We observed no differences among treatments for plasma concentrations of metabolites and hormones. The cows that were fed in the 3 n-3 FA treatments had larger ovulatory follicles compared with those fed the controlled diet. Treatments did not differ significantly in terms of the number of days open, day to first service, or number of services per pregnancy. In conclusion, n-3 FA supplementation throughout the dry period or in the early or late prepartal period had no carryover reproductive postpartum benefits and no effect on the production of Holstein dairy cows.

To investigate the effect of heat stress (HS) on production and metabolism of Afshari sheep, 32 intact male lambs (33.2 ± 4.5 kg) were used in a completely randomized design using 2 experimental periods. In period 1 all 32 lambs were housed in thermal neutral (TN) conditions (25.6 ± 2.6°C and a temperature-humidity index [THI] of 72.0 ± 2.6) and fed ad libitum for 8 d. In period 2 (P2; 9 d), 16 lambs were subjected to cyclical HS (29.0 to 43.0°C and a THI ≥80 for 24 h/d) and the other 16 lambs were maintained in TN conditions but pair fed (pair-fed thermal neutral [PFTN]) to the HS lambs. During each period DMI and water intake were measured daily. Respiration rate, rectal temperature, and skin temperature at the shoulder, rump, and front and rear leg were recorded at 0700 and 1400 h daily. Water intake increased (P < 0.05) during P2 in both HS and TN lambs (88 and 35%, respectively). Heat stress increased the 0700 and 1400 h surface temperature at the shoulder (3.0 and 10.6%), rump (2.7 and 12.7%), rear leg (3.1 and 13%), and front leg (3.0 and 13%) and respiratory rates (72 and 124%; P < 0.01, respectively, for 0700 and 1400 h) but only the 1400 h rectal temperature was increased (P < 0.01; 0.54°C) in HS lambs. Plasma glucose concentration decreased in P2 (P < 0.01) in both the HS and PFTN lambs. Basal insulin concentrations decreased in PFTN controls but increased in HS lambs (environment × period interaction; P < 0.05). Blood urea nitrogen concentration was not affected by environment or period, but NEFA levels were slightly elevated (P < 0.01) in both PFTN and HS lambs during P2. Interestingly, HS did not affect DMI, but ADG was reduced (36%; P < 0.01) compared to the PFTN lambs. These results indicate that the direct effects of heat (not mediated by reduced DMI) are partially responsible for reduced growth in heat-stressed lambs.

Thirty multiparous Holstein cows (29.8 ± 4.01days in milk; 671.6 ± 31.47 kg of body weight) were used in a completely randomized design to compare nutritional value of four fat sources including tallow, raw soybeans, extruded soybeans and roasted soybeans for 8 weeks. Experimental diets were a control containing 27.4 % alfalfa silage, 22.5% corn silage, and 50.1% concentrate, and four diets with either tallow, raw soybean, extruded soybean, or roasted soybean added to provide 1.93% supplemental fat. Dry matter and NEL intakes were similar among treatments, while cows fed fat diets had significantly (P<0.05) high NEL intakes when compared to control with no fat. Supplemental fat, whether tallow or full fat soybeans increased milk production (1.89-2.45 kg/d; P<0.01) and FCM production (1.05-2.79; P<0.01). Milk fat yield and percentage of cows fed fat-supplemented diets were significantly (P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively) higher than control. Between fat-supplemented diets, roasted soybean caused highest milk fat yield and extruded soybean caused lowest milk fat yield. There was no significant effect of supplemental fat on the milk protein and lactose content and yield. Feed efficiency of fat-supplemented diets was significantly (P<0.01) higher than control. Body weight, body weight change and BCS (body condition score) of cows, as well as energy balance and energy efficiency were similar between treatments. In conclusion, while there was no significant effect of fat sources on production response of cows, fat originating from heat-treated soybean help to minimize imported RUP (rumen undegradable protein) sources level as fish meal in comparison with tallow and raw soybean oil. In the Current study, there was no statistical significance among nutritional values of oil from extruded soybeans and roasted soybeans.

The purpose of the present study was to hasten the resumption of ovarian activity early postpartum in lactating dairy cows, using equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG), to enhance follicular growth, followed by hCG, to induce ovulation. Primiparous Holstein dairy cows (n=21) were assigned equally into eCG, eCG-hCG and Control groups. Cows in the eCG and eCG-hCG groups received an i.m. injection of eCG (500 IU Folligon®) on Day 6 postpartum. Cows in the eCG-hCG group were also given an i.m. injection of hCG (500 IU Chorulon®), once dominant follicle reached the diameter of 13-16 mm following eCG injection. Cows in Control group did not receive any treatment. Daily blood sampling and ultrasound examination were conducted, starting at Day 6 postpartum until confirming the third ovulation. Follicles ≥10 mm in diameter were detected on Day 11.5±1.48, 10.1±0.52 and 11.1±1.36 after calving in Control, eCG and eCG-hCG groups, respectively (P>0.05). The first wave dominant follicle ovulated in 71.4% of cows treated with eCG and eCG-hCG. In contrast, none of the first wave dominant follicles ovulated in Control cows. By Day 20 postpartum, all cows in eCG group, 6/7 cows in eCG-hCG group and none of the cows in Control group ovulated (P<0.05). Short estrous cycles (≤16 days) were detected in 2/7, 1/7 and 6/7 cows in eCG, eCG-hCG and control groups, respectively (P<0.05). In conclusion, injection of eCG on Day 6 postpartum could assist the early resumption of ovarian activity by enhancing ovarian follicle growth and early ovulation in postpartum cows. In this context, subsequent hCG injection may not provide any more beneficial effect.

Wheat grain (WG) is unique in possessing extensive starch and nitrogen fermentation (i.e. >85% in ground and steam-processed WG), low cation-anion difference and high-intake properties, making it a potentially useful prepartal dietary choice. The objective was to determine the effects of WG provision to pre-partum first-calf heifers on metabolic, health and productive criteria during the transition period. WG replaced barley grain that was commonly used earlier. Fifteen Holstein heifers at 31 ± 6 days pre partum were blocked based on expected calving date and assigned to three treatments or feeding totally mixed rations containing either (i) barley grain (13.8%) and wheat bran (6.1%), (ii) 10% WG (WG10) or (iii) 18% WG (WG18; dry matter (DM) basis) from 31 days pre partum until calving. In replacing WG for barley grains, some changes in WG use and slight changes in soybean and cottonseed meals use were made to properly formulate balanced rations for net energy for lactation, CP, calcium and P. Prepartal diets contained no supplemental anionic salts. Cows were monitored until 21-day post partum and received the same early lactation diet. The prepartal provision of WG and related dietary changes reduced urine pH at 7-day pre partum, and elevated blood calcium and glucose at 7-day pre partum and at 3-day post partum. Milk fat and protein yields were increased during the 21 days post partum by prepartal WG provision and related diet changes. Blood albumin, globulins, total proteins and urea concentrations were similar among treatments. Feeding diets with WG did not affect body condition score, calving difficulty, calf weight, placenta weight and the time interval from calving to placenta expulsion. It is suggested that prepartal provision of WG with necessary dietary changes led to simultaneous improvements in energy and calcium status of the heifers experiencing their first periparturient phase without compromising parturition status.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementation with digestible undegradable protein (DUP) in diet during late pregnancy on colostrum production, lamb survival and growth. For 3 weeks prior to lambing, 41 Afshari ewes were assigned at random to three dietary treatments, namely a control (CDUP), moderate (MDUP) and high (HDUP) DUP group. The ewes (n = 14) in CDUP group were fed a protein maintenance level for pregnant ewes [83 g metabolizable protein (MP)/kg dry matter (DM)], while ewes in the MDUP (n = 13) and HDUP (n = 14) groups were fed diets provided 14% (94.7 g MP/kg DM) and 24% (104.3 g MP/kg DM) MP in excess of these requirements respectively, which this increment was coming from DUP (DUP/MP ratio 43.8; 51.0% and 57.6% respectively). All diets were isoenergetic (12 MJ ME/kg DM). All ewes received the same lactation diet after lambing. Ewes in HDUP tend to produce more colostrums (p < 0.1) and had higher protein, fat, and solids non-fat content (p < 0.05) in colostrums during the first 24 h after lambing. MDUP group had higher colostrum yield compared to CDUP (p < 0.1). The changes in body weight and body condition score of ewes were similar for all diets but placenta weight was higher in MDUP group (p < 0.05) than for HDUP and CDUP ewes. Lamb body weight at weaning was higher for males compared to females (p < 0.05), but was not different between treatments. HDUP ewes had higher blood glucose concentration in the pre-lambing period than other treatments (p < 0.05). In this period, increasing the level of DUP in diet increased the content of blood urea nitrogen (p < 0.05). It was concluded that increasing the DUP content of diet for 3 weeks prior to lambing above the standard requirements resulted in an increase in colostrums production but had no effect on lamb outcome to weaning.

Effects of different dietary rumen undegradable (RUP) to degradable (RDP) protein ratios on ruminal nutrient degradation, feed intake, blood metabolites and milk production were determined in early lactation cows. Four multiparous (43 ± 5 days in milk) and four primiparous (40 ± 6 days in milk) tie-stall-housed Holstein cows were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with four 21-day periods. Each period had 14-day of adaptation and 7-day of sampling. Diets contained on a dry matter (DM) basis, 23.3% alfalfa hay, 20% corn silage and 56.7% concentrate. Cows were first offered alfalfa hay at 7:00, 15:00 and 23:00 hours, and 30 min after each alfalfa hay delivery were offered a mixture of corn silage and concentrate. Treatments were diets with RUP:RDP ratios of (i) 5.2:11.6 (control), (ii) 6.1:10.6, (iii) 7.1:9.5 and (iv) 8.1:8.5, on a dietary DM% basis. Different RUP:RDP ratios were obtained by partial and total replacement of untreated soybean meal (SBM) with xylose-treated SBM (XSBM). In situ study using three rumen-cannulated non-lactating cows showed that DM and crude protein (CP) of SBM had greater rapidly degradable fractions. The potentially degradable fractions were degraded more slowly in XSBM. Treatment cows produced greater milk, protein, lactose, solids-non-fat and total solids than control cows. Increasing RUP:RDP reduced blood urea linearly. Feed costs dropped at RUP:RDP ratios of 6.1:10.6 and 7.1:9.5, but not at 8.1:8.5, compared with the 5.2:11.6 ratio. Intake of DM and CP, rumen pH, blood glucose, albumin and total protein, faecal and urine pH, changes in body weight and body condition score, and milk lactose and solids-non-fat percentages did not differ among treatments. Results provide evidence that increasing dietary RUP:RDP ratio from 5.2:11.6 to 7.1:9.5 optimizes nitrogen metabolism and milk production and reduces feed costs in early lactation cows. Reduced blood urea suggests reprodutive benefits.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two levels of Crude Protein (CP) using Poultry by-Product Meal (PBPM) fed during late gestation on the performance, blood metabolites and colostrum composition of Holstein cows. Twenty multiparous cows 26 +/- 6 days before expected calving were assigned randomly to two treatments containing 1) 140 g kg(-1) DM CP (34 g kg(-1) DM PBPM) 2) 160 g kg(-1) DM CP (75 g kg(-1) DM PBPM). The cow's BCS was 3.56 +/- 0.5 on average, at the beginning of the trial. Yields of milk, protein, lactose and fat were not affected by prepartum dietary CP level. Colostrum composition (fat, CP and total solids percents), blood metabolites (Ca, glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, urea N and cholesterol) and metabolic diseases incidence were not influenced by prepartum dietary CP level. There was no significant difference between treatments in body weight and BCS changes. As expected, blood urea N before calving was higher in the cows fed 160 g kg(-1) DM CP diets (p < 0.002). Serum cholesterol during prepartum (p < 0.03) and postpartum (p < 0.01) periods was significantly lower in 160 g kg(-1) DM CP treatment. In general, although postpartum glucose level increased in cows which received 160 g kg(-1) DM CP in the diet, it seems that there is no other obvious advantages over feeding the 140 g kg(-1) DM CP diet. So feeding this level of CP diet to close up cows is recommended.

Wheat grain (WG) is a unique cereal rich in easily fermentable starch and low in cation-anion difference (e.g. 5.3 mEq/100 g). The controlled prepartal dietary inclusion of WG, thus, has the potential to ease adapting the rumen microbes and papillae to the high-starch lactation diets, stimulate feed intake, reduce hypocalcaemia by reducing extracellular alkalinity and a moderate induction of bone resorption, and improve milk yield in periparturient cows. The primary objective was to determine the effects of prepartal feeding of WG compared to barley grain plus wheat bran on metabolic and productive criteria in periparturient Holstein cows. Twenty-four dry cows and 16 pregnant heifers were blocked based on parity and projected calving date and fed a prepartal diet containing either (i) ground WG (18% on a dry matter basis) or (ii) a conventional diet with ground barley grain and wheat bran or control diet, from 28-day prepartum until parturition. All cows were fed the control diet during 21-day postpartum. Prepartal dietary inclusion of WG increased prepartum feed intake, elevated blood glucose and attenuated hypocalcaemia at 7-day prepartum and 1-day postpartum, reduced urine pH, and increased milk fat percent and yield. Blood proteins at 7-day prepartum were higher and placenta tended to be expelled sooner in WG-fed cows than in other cows. Treatments did not affect milk protein, changes in body condition score; total time spent eating, ruminating and chewing; blood levels of urea nitrogen, cholesterol, and phosphorous, fecal pH, and calving difficulty.
