Climate change is anticipated to cause species to shift their ranges upward and poleward, yet space for tracking suitable habitat conditions may be limited for range-restricted species at the highest elevations and latitudes of the globe. Consequently, range-restricted species inhabiting Arctic freshwater ecosystems, where global warming is most pronounced, face the challenge of coping with changing abiotic and biotic conditions or risk extinction. Here, we use an extensive fish community and environmental dataset for 1762 lakes sampled across Scandinavia (mid-1990s) to evaluate the climate vulnerability of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), the world's most cold-adapted and northernly distributed freshwater fish. Machine learning models show that abiotic and biotic factors strongly predict the occurrence of Arctic char across the region with an overall accuracy of 89 percent. Arctic char is less likely to occur in lakes with warm summer temperatures, high dissolved organic carbon levels (i.e., browning), and presence of northern pike (Esox lucius). Importantly, climate warming impacts are moderated by habitat (i.e., lake area) and amplified by the presence of competitors and/or predators (i.e., northern pike). Climate warming projections under the RCP8.5 emission scenario indicate that 81% of extant populations are at high risk of extirpation by 2080. Highly vulnerable populations occur across their range, particularly near the southern range limit and at lower elevations, with potential refugia found in some mountainous and coastal regions. Our findings highlight that range shifts may give way to range contractions for this cold-water specialist, indicating the need for pro-active conservation and mitigation efforts to avoid the loss of Arctic freshwater biodiversity.

Point sources with contaminants, such as chlorinated solvents, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or pesticides, are often located in low-permeability aquitards, where they can act as long-term sources and threaten underlying groundwater resources. We demonstrate the use of a 3D numerical model integrating comprehensive hydrogeological and contamination data to determine the contaminant mass discharge (CMD) from an aquitard into the underlying aquifer. A mature point source with a dissolved chlorinated solvent in a clayey till is used as an example. The quantitative determination is facilitated by model calibration to high-resolution vertical concentration profiles obtained by direct-push sampling techniques in the aquifer downgradient of the contaminant source zone. The concentration profiles showed a plume sinking with distance from the source characteristic for such aquitard/aquifer settings. The sinking is caused by the interplay between infiltrating water and horizontal groundwater flow. The application of 3D solute transport modeling on high-resolution profiles allowed for determining the infiltration rate, the hydraulic conductivity in the aquitard, and, ultimately, the CMD. Different source zone conceptualizations demonstrate the potential effects of fractures and sorption in source zones in aquitards on CMD development. Fractures in the aquitard had a minor influence on the current CMD determined with the presented approach. Still, fractures with hydraulic apertures larger than 10 µm were crucial for the temporal development of the CMD and plume. A thorough characterization of the source zone conditions combined with high-resolution concentration profiles and detailed modeling is valuable for shedding light on the probable future development of groundwater contamination arising from sources in aquitard/aquifer settings and evaluating remedial actions.

Existing antiarrhythmic drugs to treat atrial fibrillation (AF) have incomplete efficacy, contraindications and adverse effects, including proarrhythmia. AP30663, an inhibitor of the KCa2 channel, has demonstrated AF efficacy in animals; however, its efficacy in humans with AF is unknown. Here we conducted a phase 2 trial in which patients with a current episode of AF lasting for 7 days or less were randomized to receive an intravenous infusion of 3 or 5 mg kg-1 AP30663 or placebo. The trial was prematurely discontinued because of slow enrollment during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. The primary endpoint of the trial was cardioversion from AF to sinus rhythm within 90 min from the start of the infusion, analyzed with Bayesian statistics. Among 59 patients randomized and included in the efficacy analyses, the primary endpoint occurred in 42% (5 of 12), 55% (12 of 22) and 0% (0 of 25) of patients treated with 3 mg kg-1 AP30663, 5 mg kg-1 AP30663 or placebo, respectively. Both doses demonstrated more than 99.9% probability of superiority over placebo, surpassing the prespecified 95% threshold. The mean time to cardioversion, a secondary endpoint, was 47 (s.d. = 23) and 41 (s.d. = 24) minutes for 3 mg kg-1 and 5 mg kg-1 AP30663, respectively. AP30663 caused a transient increase in the QTcF interval, with a maximum mean effect of 37.7 ms for the 5 mg kg-1 dose. For both dose groups, no ventricular arrhythmias occurred and adverse event rates were comparable to the placebo group. AP30663 demonstrated AF cardioversion efficacy in patients with recent-onset AF episodes. KCa2 channel inhibition may be an attractive mechanism for rhythm control of AF that should be studied further in randomized trials. ClinicalTrials.gov registration: NCT04571385 .

AIMS: AP30663 is a novel compound under development for pharmacological conversion of atrial fibrillation by targeting the small conductance Ca2+ activated K+ (KCa2) channel. The aim of this extension phase 1 study was to test AP30663 at higher single doses compared to the first-in-human trial. METHODS: Sixteen healthy male volunteers were randomized into 2 cohorts: 6- and 8-mg/kg intravenous single-dose administration of AP30663 vs. placebo. Safety, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data were collected. RESULTS: AP30663 was associated with mild and transient infusion site reactions with no clustering of other adverse events but with an estimated maximum mean QTcF interval prolongation of 45.2 ms (95% confidence interval 31.5-58.9) in the 6 mg/kg dose level and 50.4 ms (95% confidence interval 36.7-64.0) with 8 mg/kg. Pharmacokinetics was dose proportional with terminal half-life of around 3 h. CONCLUSION: AP30663 in doses up to 8 mg/kg was associated with mild and transient infusion site reactions and an increase of the QTcF interval. Supporting Information support that the QTc effect may be explained by an off-target inhibition of the IKr channel.

The dominant road traffic particle sources are wear particles from the road and tire interface, and from vehicle brake pads. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of road and brake wear particles on pulmonary function and biomarkers in isolated perfused rat lungs. Particles were sampled from the studded tire wear of three road pavements containing different rock materials in a road simulator; and from the wear of two brake pad materials using a pin-on-disk machine. Isolated rat lungs inhaled the coarse and fine fractions of the sampled particles resulting in an estimated total particle lung dose of 50 µg. The tidal volume (TV) was measured during the particle exposure and the following 50 min. Perfusate and BALF were analyzed for the cytokines TNF, CXCL1 and CCL3. The TV of lungs exposed to rock materials was significantly reduced after 25 min of exposure compared to the controls, for quartzite already after 4 min. The particles of the heavy-duty brake pads had no effect on the TV. Brake particles resulted in a significant elevation of CXCL1 in the perfusate. Brake particles showed significant elevations of all three measured cytokines, and quartzite showed a significant elevation of TNF in BALF. The study shows that the toxic effect on lungs exposed to airborne particles can be investigated using measurements of tidal volume. Furthermore, the study shows that the choice of rock material in road pavements has the potential to affect the toxicity of road wear PM10.

Background: Walking capacity is important not only to persons with multiple sclerosis but also to clinical practice and research. The present study aims to compare the extent of impairments (relative to healthy controls) across three commonly used walking capacity outcomes in persons with multiple sclerosis. Methods: In a two-hospital cross-sectional study, walking capacity was assessed using the timed-25-footwalk-test (timed 25-ft walk test; 'walking speed'), the six-minute-walk-test ('walking endurance') and the six-spot-step-test ('walking balance and coordination'). Data were compared to normative reference data in healthy controls. Results: A total of 228 persons with multiple sclerosis (68% females) were involved in the study: age 53.7 ± 11.6 y (range 26-81 y); patient-determined-disease-steps 3 [IQR; 1; 4] (range 0-7); time since diagnosis 12.6 ± 9.9 y (range 0-49 y); MS-phenotype (relapse remitting MS, secondary progressive MS, primary progressive MS) 146/39/41; and co-morbidity n = 80 (35%). Compared to healthy controls, deficits were observed across all walking capacity outcomes (p < 0.001): timed 25-foot walk test -26 [-30; -23]%, 6 minute-walk-test -36 [-39; -32]% and six-spot-step-test -44 [-47; -40]%. Deficits differed across walking capacity outcomes (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Altogether, persons with multiple sclerosis performed substantially worse than healthy controls across all three walking capacity outcomes. The results showed that the six-spot-step-test was superior to the timed 25-foot walk test and the 6 minute-walk-test in detecting walking capacity impairments in persons with multiple sclerosis.

Various rational metabolic engineering and random approaches have been applied to introduce and improve xylose utilization and ethanol productivity by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Among them, the BUD21 gene was identified as an interesting candidate for enhancing xylose consumption as its deletion appeared to be sufficient to improve growth, substrate utilization and ethanol productivity on xylose, even in a laboratory strain lacking a heterologous xylose pathway. The present study aimed at studying the influence of BUD21 deletion in recombinant strains carrying heterologous oxido-reductive xylose utilization pathway. The positive effect of BUD21 gene deletion on aerobic growth and xylose utilization could not be confirmed in two non-engineered laboratory strains (BY4741 and CEN.PK 113-7D) that were grown in YP rich medium with 20 g/L xylose as sole carbon source, despite the fact that effective deletion of BUD21 gene was confirmed using both genotypic (colony PCR) and phenotypic (heat sensitive phenotype of the BUD21 deletion mutant) control experiments. Therefore, the effect of BUD21 deletion on xylose fermentation might be strain- or medium-dependent.

The gut microbiome is shaped through infancy and impacts the maturation of the immune system, thus protecting against chronic disease later in life. Phages, or viruses that infect bacteria, modulate bacterial growth by lysis and lysogeny, with the latter being especially prominent in the infant gut. Viral metagenomes (viromes) are difficult to analyse because they span uncharted viral diversity, lacking marker genes and standardized detection methods. Here we systematically resolved the viral diversity in faecal viromes from 647 1-year-olds belonging to Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood 2010, an unselected Danish cohort of healthy mother-child pairs. By assembly and curation we uncovered 10,000 viral species from 248 virus family-level clades (VFCs). Most (232 VFCs) were previously unknown, belonging to the Caudoviricetes viral class. Hosts were determined for 79% of phage using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat spacers within bacterial metagenomes from the same children. Typical Bacteroides-infecting crAssphages were outnumbered by undescribed phage families infecting Clostridiales and Bifidobacterium. Phage lifestyles were conserved at the viral family level, with 33 virulent and 118 temperate phage families. Virulent phages were more abundant, while temperate ones were more prevalent and diverse. Together, the viral families found in this study expand existing phage taxonomy and provide a resource aiding future infant gut virome research.

OBJECTIVE: The association between common electrocardiogram (ECG) markers and Alzheimer's disease has been scarcely investigated, and it is unknown if ECG markers can improve risk prediction. Thus, we aimed to examine the association between common ECG markers and Alzheimer's disease in a large population. METHODS: We studied the association between ECG markers and Alzheimer's disease using Cox models with adjustment for age, sex, and comorbidities using a large primary care population of patients aged 60 years or more. RESULTS: We followed 172,236 subjects for a median of 7.5 years. Increased PR interval (hazard ratio for PR > 188 ms: 0.76 [95% confidence interval: 0.69-0.83, p < 0.001) and increased QTc interval (hazard ratio for QTc = [426;439]: 0.90 [0.83-0.98], p = 0.02) were associated with a decreased rate of Alzheimer's disease. A positive Sokolow-Lyon index >35 mm (1.22 [1.13-1.33], p < 0.001) and increased T-wave amplitude >4.1 mm (1.15 [1.04-1.27]) were associated with an increased rate of Alzheimer's disease. Upon addition of ECG markers to a reference model, 10-year prediction area under the receiver-operator characteristics curve (AUC) improved by 0.39 [0.06-0.67] %-points. The 10-year absolute risk of Alzheimer's disease was 6.5% and 5.2% for an 82-year old female and a male, respectively, with a favorable ECG, and 12% and 9.2%, respectively, with an unfavorable ECG, almost twice as high. CONCLUSIONS: We identified several common ECG markers which were associated with Alzheimer's disease, and which improved risk prediction for Alzheimer's disease.

Citizen science and automated collection methods increasingly depend on image recognition to provide the amounts of observational data research and management needs. Recognition models, meanwhile, also require large amounts of data from these sources, creating a feedback loop between the methods and tools. Species that are harder to recognize, both for humans and machine learning algorithms, are likely to be under-reported, and thus be less prevalent in the training data. As a result, the feedback loop may hamper training mostly for species that already pose the greatest challenge. In this study, we trained recognition models for various taxa, and found evidence for a 'recognizability bias', where species that are more readily identified by humans and recognition models alike are more prevalent in the available image data. This pattern is present across multiple taxa, and does not appear to relate to differences in picture quality, biological traits or data collection metrics other than recognizability. This has implications for the expected performance of future models trained with more data, including such challenging species.

Browning of Fennoscandian boreal lakes is raising concerns for negative ecosystem impacts as well as reduced drinking water quality. Declined sulfur deposition and warmer climate, along with afforestation, other climate impacts and less outfield grazing, have resulted in increased fluxes of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) from catchments to freshwater, and subsequently to coastal waters. This study assesses the major governing factors for increased TOC levels among several catchment characteristics in almost 5000 Fennoscandian lakes and catchments. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a proxy for plant biomass, and the proportions of peatland in the catchment, along with surface runoff intensity and nitrogen deposition loading, were identified as the main spatial predictors for lake TOC concentrations. A multiple linear model, based on these explanatory variables, was used to simulate future TOC concentration in surface runoff from coastal drainage basins in 2050 and 2100, using the forecasts of climatic variables in two of the Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSP): 1-2.6 (+2 °C) and 3-7.0 (+4,5 °C). These scenarios yield contrasting effects. SSP 1-2.6 predicts an overall decrease of TOC export to coastal waters, while SSP 3-7.0 in contrast leads to an increase in TOC export.

BACKGROUND: The discovery of microorganisms capable of complete ammonia oxidation to nitrate (comammox) has prompted a paradigm shift in our understanding of nitrification, an essential process in N cycling, hitherto considered to require both ammonia oxidizing and nitrite oxidizing microorganisms. This intriguing metabolism is unique to the genus Nitrospira, a diverse taxon previously known to only contain canonical nitrite oxidizers. Comammox Nitrospira have been detected in diverse environments; however, a global view of the distribution, abundance, and diversity of Nitrospira species is still incomplete. RESULTS: In this study, we retrieved 55 metagenome-assembled Nitrospira genomes (MAGs) from newly obtained and publicly available metagenomes. Combined with publicly available MAGs, this constitutes the largest Nitrospira genome database to date with 205 MAGs, representing 132 putative species, most without cultivated representatives. Mapping of metagenomic sequencing reads from various environments against this database enabled an analysis of the distribution and habitat preferences of Nitrospira species. Comammox Nitrospira's ecological success is evident as they outnumber and present higher species-level richness than canonical Nitrospira in all environments examined, except for marine and wastewaters samples. The type of environment governs Nitrospira species distribution, without large-scale biogeographical signal. We found that closely related Nitrospira species tend to occupy the same habitats, and that this phylogenetic signal in habitat preference is stronger for canonical Nitrospira species. Comammox Nitrospira eco-evolutionary history is more complex, with subclades achieving rapid niche divergence via horizontal transfer of genes, including the gene encoding hydroxylamine oxidoreductase, a key enzyme in nitrification. CONCLUSIONS: Our study expands the genomic inventory of the Nitrospira genus, exposes the ecological success of complete ammonia oxidizers within a wide range of habitats, identifies the habitat preferences of (sub)lineages of canonical and comammox Nitrospira species, and proposes that horizontal transfer of genes involved in nitrification is linked to niche separation within a sublineage of comammox Nitrospira. The skills and knowledge needed to recognize and classify taxa are becoming increasingly scarce in the scientific community. At the same time, it is clear that these skills are strongly needed in biodiversity monitoring for management and conservation, especially when carried out by citizen scientists. Formalizing the required knowledge in the form of digital identification keys is one way of making such knowledge more available for professional and amateur observers of biodiversity. In this paper we describe Clavis, an open and versatile data format for capturing the knowledge required for taxon identification through digital keys, allowing for a level of detail beyond that of any current key format. We present the format independently from any particular implementation, as our aim is for Clavis to serve as a basis for interoperable tools and interfaces serving different needs and actors.

Climate change has dramatic impacts on ecological systems, affecting a range of ecological factors including phenology, species abundance, diversity, and distribution. The breadth of climate change impacts on ecological systems leads to the occurrence of fingerprints of climate change. However, climate fingerprints are usually identified across broad geographical scales and are potentially influenced by publication biases. In this study, we used natural history collections spanning over 250 years, to quantify a range of ecological responses to climate change, including phenology, abundance, diversity, and distributions, across a range of taxa, including vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and fungi, within a single region, Central Norway. We tested the hypotheses that ecological responses to climate change are apparent and coherent at a regional scale, that longer time series show stronger trends over time and in relation to temperature, and that ecological responses change in trajectory at the same time as shifts in temperature. We identified a clear regional coherence in climate signal, with decreasing abundances of limnic zooplankton (on average by 7691 individuals m-3 °C-1) and boreal forest breeding birds (on average by 1.94 territories km-2 °C-1), and earlier plant flowering phenology (on average 2 days °C-1) for every degree of temperature increase. In contrast, regional-scale species distributions and species diversity were largely stable. Surprisingly, the effect size of ecological response did not increase with study duration, and shifts in responses did not occur at the same time as shifts in temperature. This may be as the long-term studies include both periods of warming and temperature stability, and that ecological responses lag behind warming. Our findings demonstrate a regional climate fingerprint across a long timescale. We contend that natural history collections provide a unique window on a broad spectrum of ecological responses at timescales beyond most ecological monitoring programs. Natural history collections are thus an essential source for long-term ecological research.

Assessing risk, planning for safety and security, and aiding recovery for children subjected to violence in a family setting is a complex process. The aim of the article is to synthesize the current research literature about risks for children subjected to violence in the family and outline an empirical base for a holistic and practically usable model of risk assessments placing the individual child at the center. Such assessments need to recognize four different areas of risk: (1) child safety, i.e., known risk factors for severe and dangerous violence aimed at both adults and children and how they play out in the individual case; (2) the child's response in situations with violence; (3) the child's perspective, especially fear and feelings of powerlessness in situations with violence; (4) developmental risks, e.g., instability in the child's situation and care arrangements, lack of a carer/parent as a "secure base" and "safe haven", the child developing difficulties due to the violence (e.g., PTSD), problems in parents' caring capacities in relation to a child with experiences of, and reactions to, violence, and lack of opportunities for the child to make sense of, and create meaning in relation to, experiences of violence. In addition to the four areas of risk, the article emphasizes the importance of assessing the need for immediate intervention and safety planning in the current situation as regards safety, the child's responses, the child's perspectives, and long-term developmental risks.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether electrocardiogram (ECG) markers are associated with incident non-Alzheimer's dementia (non-AD) and whether these markers also improve risk prediction for non-AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively included 170,605 primary care patients aged 60 years or older referred for an ECG by their general practitioner and followed them for a median of 7.6 years. Using Cox regression, we reported hazard ratios (HRs) for electrocardiogram markers. Subsequently, we evaluated if addition of these electrocardiogram markers to a clinical model improved risk prediction for non-AD using change in area under the receiver-operator characteristics curve (AUC). RESULTS: The 5-year cumulative incidence of non-AD was 3.4 %. Increased heart rate (HR=1.06 pr. 10 bpm [95% confidence interval: 1.04-1.08], p<0.001), shorter QRS duration (HR=1.07 pr. 10 ms [1.05-1.09], p<0.001), elevated J-amplitude (HR=1.16 pr. mm [1.08-1.24], p<0.001), decreased T-peak amplitude (HR=1.02 pr. mm [1.01-1.04], p=0.002), and increased QTc (HR=1.08 pr. 20 ms [1.05-1.10], p<0.001) were associated with an increased rate of non-AD. Atrial fibrillation on the ECG (HR=1.18 [1.08-1.28], p<0.001) Sokolow-Lyon index > 35 mm (HR=1.31 [1.18-1.46], p<0.001) and borderline (HR=1.18 [1.11-1.26], p<0.001) or abnormal (HR=1.40 [1.27-1.55], p<0.001) QRS-T angle were also associated with an increased rate of non-AD. Upon addition of ECG markers to the Cox model, 5-year and 10-year C-statistic (AUC) improved significantly (delta-AUC, 0.36 [0.18-0.50] and 0.20 [0.03-0.35] %-points, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: ECG markers typical of an elevated cardiovascular risk profile were associated with non-AD and improved both 5-year and 10-year risk predictions for non-AD.

Technological advances and data availability have enabled artificial intelligence-driven tools that can increasingly successfully assist in identifying species from images. Especially within citizen science, an emerging source of information filling the knowledge gaps needed to solve the biodiversity crisis, such tools can allow participants to recognize and report more poorly known species. This can be an important tool in addressing the substantial taxonomic bias in biodiversity data, where broadly recognized, charismatic species are highly over-represented. Meanwhile, the recognition models are trained using the same biased data, so it is important to consider what additional images are needed to improve recognition models. In this study, we investigated how the amount of training data influenced the performance of species recognition models for various taxa. We utilized a large citizen science dataset collected in Norway, where images are added independently from identification. We demonstrate that while adding images of currently under-represented taxa will generally improve recognition models more, there are important deviations from this general pattern. Thus, a more focused prioritization of data collection beyond the basic paradigm that "more is better" is likely to significantly improve species recognition models and advance the representativeness of biodiversity data.

OBJECTIVE: The primary results from the Vasopressin and Methylprednisolone for In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (VAM-IHCA) trial have previously been reported. The objective of the current manuscript is to report long-term outcomes. METHODS: The VAM-IHCA trial was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted at ten hospitals in Denmark. Adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) were eligible for the trial if they had an in-hospital cardiac arrest and received at least one dose of epinephrine during resuscitation. The trial drugs consisted of 40 mg methylprednisolone (Solu-Medrol®, Pfizer) and 20 IU of vasopressin (Empressin®, Amomed Pharma GmbH) given as soon as possible after the first dose of epinephrine. This manuscript report outcomes at 6 months and 1 year including survival, survival with favorable neurological outcome, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS: 501 patients were included in the analysis. At 1 year, 15 patients (6.3%) in the intervention group and 22 patients (8.3%) in the placebo group were alive corresponding to a risk ratio of 0.76 (95% CI, 0.41-1.41). A favorable neurologic outcome at 1 year, based on the Cerebral Performance Category score, was observed in 14 patients (5.9%) in the intervention group and 20 patients (7.6%) in the placebo group (risk ratio, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.41-1.49]. No differences existed between groups for favorable neurological outcome and health-related quality of life at either 6 months or 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of vasopressin and methylprednisolone, compared with placebo, in patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest did not improve long-term outcomes in this trial.

Comprehensive assessments of species' extinction risks have documented the extinction crisis1 and underpinned strategies for reducing those risks2. Global assessments reveal that, among tetrapods, 40.7% of amphibians, 25.4% of mammals and 13.6% of birds are threatened with extinction3. Because global assessments have been lacking, reptiles have been omitted from conservation-prioritization analyses that encompass other tetrapods4-7. Reptiles are unusually diverse in arid regions, suggesting that they may have different conservation needs6. Here we provide a comprehensive extinction-risk assessment of reptiles and show that at least 1,829 out of 10,196 species (21.1%) are threatened-confirming a previous extrapolation8 and representing 15.6 billion years of phylogenetic diversity. Reptiles are threatened by the same major factors that threaten other tetrapods-agriculture, logging, urban development and invasive species-although the threat posed by climate change remains uncertain. Reptiles inhabiting forests, where these threats are strongest, are more threatened than those in arid habitats, contrary to our prediction. Birds, mammals and amphibians are unexpectedly good surrogates for the conservation of reptiles, although threatened reptiles with the smallest ranges tend to be isolated from other threatened tetrapods. Although some reptiles-including most species of crocodiles and turtles-require urgent, targeted action to prevent extinctions, efforts to protect other tetrapods, such as habitat preservation and control of trade and invasive species, will probably also benefit many reptiles.

Chemical eradication of non-native species has become a widely used method to mitigate the potential negative impacts of altered competitive or predatory dynamics on biodiversity and natural ecosystem processes. However, the responses of non-target species can vary from rapid full recovery to delayed or absent recolonization, and little is known about the potential shifts in resource use and trophic diversity of native species following chemical treatments. We used a before-after-control-impact approach to study the effects of rotenone piscicide treatment on abundance and trophic niche of benthic invertebrates in three untreated and three treated lakes in central Norway, the latter group hosting non-native roach (Rutilus rutilus) and pike (Esox lucius) prior to rotenone treatment. Based on community composition data, the relative abundance of invertebrate grazers and collectors decreased while that of predators increased following fish removal in the treated lakes. The stable isotope data indicated minor shifts in resource use of, and trophic diversity among, benthic invertebrate communities. While the predatory dragonfly larvae (Odonata) and grazer snails (Lymnaeidae) showed increased δ13C values indicating increased reliance on littoral benthic algae, the collector mayfly larvae (Leptophlebia) showed decreased δ13C values following fish removal in treated lakes. Grazer snails also showed a shift to a lower trophic position, while the predatory dragonflies and collector mayflies showed no changes in δ15N values following fish removal. The community-level isotopic niches of benthic invertebrates showed no consistent changes, although the sample-size corrected and Bayesian estimates of standard ellipse areas (SEAC and SEAB) slightly increased in two of the three treated lakes due to an increased range in δ15N. In conclusion, our study findings indicate some changes in species assemblages but minor shifts in the resource use and trophic diversity of benthic invertebrate communities following fish removal in rotenone treated lakes.
