Introduction. Nonlinear EEG provides information about dynamic properties of the brain. This study aimed to compare nonlinear EEG parameters estimated from patients with Long COVID in different cognitive and motor tasks. Materials and Methods. This 12-month prospective cohort study included 83 patients with Long COVID: 53 symptomatic and 30 asymptomatic. Brain electrical activity was evaluated by EEG in 4 situations: (1) at rest, (2) during the Trail Making Test Part A (TMT-A), (3) during the TMT Part B (TMT-B), and (4) during a coordination task: the Box and Blocks Test (BBT). Nonlinear EEG parameters were estimated in the time domain (activity and complexity). Assessments were made at 0 to 3, 3 to 6, and 6 to 12 months after inclusion. Results. There was a decrease in activity and complexity during the TMT-A and TMT-B, and an increase of these parameters during the BBT in both groups. There was an increase in activity at rest and during the TMT-A in the COVID-19 group at 0 to 3 months compared to the control, an increase in activity in the TMT-B in the COVID-19 group at 3 to 6 months compared to the control, and reduced activity and complexity at rest and during the TMT-A at 6 to 12 months compared to the control. Conclusion. The tasks followed a pattern of increased activity and complexity in cognitive tasks, which decreased during the coordination task. It was also observed that an increase in activity at rest and during cognitive tasks in the early stages, and reduced activity and complexity at rest and during cognitive tasks in the late phases of Long COVID.

(1) Background: Vibrotactile stimulation has been studied for tremor, but there is little evidence for Essential Tremor (ET). (2) Methods: This research employed a dataset from a previous study, with data collected from 18 individuals subjected to four vibratory stimuli. To characterise tremor changes before, during, and after stimuli, time and frequency domain features were estimated from the signals. Correlation and regression analyses verified the relationship between features and clinical tremor scores. (3) Results: Individuals responded differently to vibrotactile stimulation. The 250 Hz stimulus was the only one that reduced tremor amplitude after stimulation. Compared to the baseline, the 250 Hz and random frequency stimulation reduced tremor peak power. The clinical scores and amplitude-based features were highly correlated, yielding accurate regression models (mean squared error of 0.09). (4) Conclusions: The stimulation frequency of 250 Hz has the greatest potential to reduce tremors in ET. The accurate regression model and high correlation between estimated features and clinical scales suggest that prediction models can automatically evaluate and control stimulus-induced tremor. A limitation of this research is the relatively reduced sample size.

Freezing of gait (FOG), one of the most disabling features of Parkinson's disease (PD), is a brief episodic absence or marked reduction in stride progression despite the intention to walk. Progressively more people who experience FOG restrict their walking and reduce their level of physical activity. The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a physical mobility task that induces freezing of gait in a controlled environment, employing known triggers of FOG episodes according to the literature. To validate the physical mobility tasks, we recruited 10 volunteers that suffered PD-associated freezing (60.6 ± 7.29 years-old) with new FOG-Q ranging from 12 to 26. The validation of the proposed method was carried out using inertial sensors and video recordings. All subjects were assessed during the OFF and ON medication states. The total number of FOG occurrences during data collection was 144. The proposed tasks were able to trigger 120 FOG episodes, while the TUG test caused 24. The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with accelerometer and gyroscope could not only detect FOG episodes but also allowed us to visualize the three types of FOG: akinesia, festination and trembling in place.

(1) Background: The dynamics of hand tremors involve nonrandom and short-term motor patterns (STMPs). This study aimed to (i) identify STMPs in Parkinson's disease (PD) and physiological resting tremor and (ii) characterize STMPs by amplitude, persistence, and regularity. (2) Methods: This study included healthy (N = 12, 60.1 ± 5.9 years old) and PD (N = 14, 65 ± 11.54 years old) participants. The signals were collected using a triaxial gyroscope on the dorsal side of the hand during a resting condition. Data were preprocessed and seven features were extracted from each 1 s window with 50% overlap. The STMPs were identified using the clustering technique k-means applied to the data in the two-dimensional space given by t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE). The frequency, transition probability, and duration of the STMPs for each group were assessed. All STMP features were averaged across groups. (3) Results: Three STMPs were identified in tremor signals (p < 0.05). STMP 1 was prevalent in the healthy control (HC) subjects, STMP 2 in both groups, and STMP3 in PD. Only the coefficient of variation and complexity differed significantly between groups. (4) Conclusion: These results can help professionals characterize and evaluate tremor severity and treatment efficacy.

(1) Background: One of the main cardinal signs of Parkinson's disease (PD) is rigidity, whose assessment is important for monitoring the patient's recovery. The wrist is one of the joints most affected by this symptom, which has a great impact on activities of daily living and consequently on quality of life. The assessment of rigidity is traditionally made by clinical scales, which have limitations due to their subjectivity and low intra- and inter-examiner reliability. (2) Objectives: To compile the main methods used to assess wrist rigidity in PD and to study their validity and reliability, a scope review was conducted. (3) Methods: PubMed, IEEE/IET Electronic Library, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, Bireme, Google Scholar and Science Direct databases were used. (4) Results: Twenty-eight studies were included. The studies presented several methods for quantitative assessment of rigidity using instruments such as force and inertial sensors. (5) Conclusions: Such methods present good correlation with clinical scales and are useful for detecting and monitoring rigidity. However, the development of a standard quantitative method for assessing rigidity in clinical practice remains a challenge.

(1) Background: Several instruments are used to assess individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, most instruments necessitate the physical presence of a clinician for evaluation, were not designed for PD, nor validated for remote application. (2) Objectives: To develop and validate a self-assessment questionnaire that can be used remotely, and to assess the respondents' health condition. (3) Methods: A questionnaire, so-called Multidimensional Assessment Questionnaire for Individuals with PD (MAQPD), was developed, administered remotely, and completed by 302 people with PD. MAQPD was validated using factor analysis (FA). The participants' level of impairment was estimated using factor loadings. The scale's accuracy was assessed estimating floor and ceiling effects and Cronbach's alpha. (4) Results: FA suggested classifying the questions into daily activities, cognition, and pain. The respondents did not have extremely severe impairment (most scores ranged from 100 to 180 points), and the factors with the lowest scores were cognition and pain. The instrument had no significant floor or ceiling effects (rates less than 15%), and the Cronbach's alpha value was larger than 0.90. (5) Conclusion: MAQPD is the only remote self-administered tool found in the literature capable of providing a detailed assessment of the general health status of individuals with PD.

Eliminating facial electromyographic (EMG) signal from the electroencephalogram (EEG) is crucial for the accuracy of applications such as brain computer interfaces (BCIs) and brain functionality measurement. Facial electromyography typically corrupts the electroencephalogram. Although it is possible to find in the literature a number of multi-channel approaches for filtering corrupted EEG, studies employing single-channel approaches are scarce. In this context, this study proposed a single-channel method for attenuating facial EMG noise from contaminated EEG. The architecture of the method allows for the evaluation and incorporation of multiple decomposition and adaptive filtering techniques. The decomposition method was responsible for generating EEG or EMG reference signals for the adaptive filtering stage. In this study, the decomposition techniques CiSSA, EMD, EEMD, EMD-PCA, SSA, and Wavelet were evaluated. The adaptive filtering methods RLS, Wiener, LMS, and NLMS were investigated. A time and frequency domain set of features were estimated from experimental signals to evaluate the performance of the single channel method. This set of characteristics permitted the characterization of the contamination of distinct facial muscles, namely Masseter, Frontalis, Zygomatic, Orbicularis Oris, and Orbicularis Oculi. Data were collected from ten healthy subjects executing an experimental protocol that introduced the necessary variability to evaluate the filtering performance. The largest level of contamination was produced by the Masseter muscle, as determined by statistical analysis of the set of features and visualization of topological maps. Regarding the decomposition method, the SSA method allowed for the generation of more suitable reference signals, whereas the RLS and NLMS methods were more suitable when the reference signal was derived from the EEG. In addition, the LMS and RLS methods were more appropriate when the reference signal was the EMG. This study has a number of practical implications, including the use of filtering techniques to reduce EEG contamination caused by the activation of facial muscles required by distinct types of studies. All the developed code, including examples, is available to facilitate a more accurate reproduction and improvement of the results of this study.

The network of brain structures engaged in motor sequence learning comprises the same structures as those involved in tremor, including basal ganglia, cerebellum, thalamus, and motor cortex. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventrointermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM) reduces tremor, but the effects on motor sequence learning are unknown. We investigated whether VIM stimulation has an impact on motor sequence learning and hypothesized that stimulation effects depend on the laterality of electrode location. Twenty patients (age: 38-81 years; 12 female) with VIM electrodes implanted to treat essential tremor (ET) successfully performed a serial reaction time task, varying whether the stimuli followed a repeating pattern or were selected at random, during which VIM-DBS was either on or off. Analyses of variance were applied to evaluate motor sequence learning performance according to reaction times (RTs) and accuracy. An interaction was observed between whether the sequence was repeated or random and whether VIM-DBS was on or off (F[1,18] = 7.89, p = .012). Motor sequence learning, reflected by reduced RTs for repeated sequences, was greater with DBS on than off (T[19] = 2.34, p = .031). Stimulation location correlated with the degree of motor learning, with greater motor learning when stimulation targeted the lateral VIM (n = 23, ρ = 0.46; p = .027). These results demonstrate the beneficial effects of VIM-DBS on motor sequence learning in ET patients, particularly with lateral VIM electrode location, and provide evidence for a role for the VIM in motor sequence learning.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can disrupt various brain functions. Over a one-year period, we aimed to assess brain activity and cognitive function in 53 COVID-19 patients and 30 individuals without COVID-19 (or asymptomatic). The Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Trail Making Test Parts A and B (TMT-A and B), and Digit Span Test were used to assess cognitive function. Cognitive variables and electroencephalography (EEG) data (activity, mobility, and complexity) were compared between the groups at rest and during cognitive demand (F3-F7, Fz-F3, Fz-F4, and F4-F8). There was a reduction in F3-F7 activity during the TMT-B in the COVID-19 group at 6-12 months compared to the controls (p = 0.01) at baseline (p = 0.03), a reduction in signal complexity at F3-F7 at rest in the COVID-19 group at baseline and 6-12 months compared to the controls (p < 0.001), and a reduction in Fz-F4 activity at rest from 6-12 months in the post-COVID group compared to baseline (p = 0.02) and 3-6 months (p = 0.04). At 6-12 months, there was a time increase in TMT-A in the COVID-19 group compared to that in the controls (p = 0.04). Some correlations were found between EEG data and cognitive test in both groups. In conclusion, there was a reduction in brain activity at rest in the Fz-F4 areas and during high cognitive demands in the F3-F7 areas. A reduction in signal complexity in F3-F7 at rest was found in the COVID-19 group at 6-12 months after acute infection. Furthermore, individuals with COVID-19 experience long-term changes in cognitive function.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition of the central nervous system that causes motor and non-motor dysfunctions. The disease affects 1% of the world population over 60 years and remains cureless. Knowledge and monitoring of PD are essential to provide better living conditions for patients. Thus, diagnostic exams and monitoring of the disease can generate a large amount of data from a given patient. This study proposes the development and usability evaluation of an integrated system, which can be used in clinical and research settings to manage biomedical data collected from PD patients. METHODS: A system, so-called Sistema Integrado de Dados Biomédicos (SIDABI) (Integrated Biomedical Data System), was designed following the model-view-controller (MVC) standard. A modularized architecture was created in which all the other modules are connected to a central security module. Thirty-six examiners evaluated the system usability through the System Usability Scale (SUS). The agreement between examiners was measured by Kendall's coefficient with a significance level of 1%. RESULTS: The free and open-source web-based system was implemented using modularized and responsive methods to adapt the system features on multiple platforms. The mean SUS score was 82.99 ± 13.97 points. The overall agreement was 70.2%, as measured by Kendall's coefficient (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: According to the SUS scores, the developed system has good usability. The system proposed here can help researchers to organize and share information, avoiding data loss and fragmentation. Furthermore, it can help in the follow-up of PD patients, in the training of professionals involved in the treatment of the disorder, and in studies that aim to find hidden correlations in data.

PURPOSE: Some studies have explored the relationship between music and cortical activities; however, there are just few studies investigating guitar performance associated with different sensory stimuli. Our aim was to evaluate alpha and beta activity during guitar playing. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Twenty healthy right-handed people participated in this study. Cortical activity was measured by electroencephalogram (EEG) during rest and 4 tasks (1: easy music with an auditory stimulus; 2: easy music with an audiovisual stimulus; 3: complex music with an auditory stimulus; 4: complex music with an audiovisual stimulus). The peak frequency (PF), median frequency (MF) and root mean square (RMS) of alpha and beta EEG signals were assessed. RESULTS: A higher alpha PF at the T3-P3 was observed, and this difference was higher between rest and task 3, rest and task 4, tasks 1 and 3, and tasks 1 and 4. For beta waves, a higher PF was observed at C4-P4 and a higher RMS at C3-C4 and O1-O2. At C4-P4, differences between rest and tasks 2 and 4 were observed. The RMS of beta waves at C3-C4 presented differences between rest and task 3 and at O1-O2 between rest and task 2 and 4. CONCLUSION: The action observation of audiovisual stimuli while playing guitar can increase beta wave activity in the somatosensory and motor cortexes; and increase in the alpha activity in the somatosensory and auditory cortexes and increase in the beta activity in the bilateral visual cortexes during complex music execution, regardless of the stimulus type received. Abstract Introduction The aim of this pilot study based on convenience sampling was to analyze the feasibility to quantitatively discriminate Trendelenburg sign (TS), a characteristic drop in pelvic position during gait in hip disfunctions, in patients with total hip arthroplasty (THA), by assessing gait variability and symmetry using inertial sensors. Methods Thirteen patients with right THA, divided into two groups with (GTS, n=4) and without TS (GnTS, n=9) assessed by experienced physician, were enrolled in the study. Harris Hip Score was applied for specific evaluation of THA. The protocol consisted in walking on a level treadmill during 3 minutes with two inertial sensors attached at anterior superior iliac spine of both sides. For each left and right step, features were extracted from the Y-axis gyroscope signals: peak value, mean absolute value, standard deviation and range. For each feature, a symmetry ratio was calculated as the ratio between left and right side. Results No significant differences were found in Harris Hip Score between groups. The variability assessed by standard deviation for left step, contralateral to the replaced side, was significantly larger for GTS group (p<0.001). Significant differences in the symmetry ratios were found between GTS and GnTS for all features extracted from gyroscopes Y-axis (W=144, p<0.001). The symmetry ratios for GnTS group were approximately equal one (except for range), whereas for the GTS group they exceed the 10% criterion. Conclusion The variability and symmetry ratios of gait features extracted from inertial sensors were successful to discriminate TS in THA patients.

Abstract Introduction: People carry backpacks of different weight in different positions every day. The effects of backpack wearing under different loads and positions were assessed according to the gait's spatiotemporal parameters and their variability in young adults. Methods Twenty-one subjects performed trials of 4 min in the conditions: control condition with no backpack; bilateral back load consisting of 10% body weight (BW); bilateral back load of 20% BW (B20); unilateral load of 10% BW; unilateral load with 20% BW (U20); bilateral frontal load with 10% BW; bilateral frontal load with 20% BW. Results Step length (SL) and step frequency (SF) show that frontal conditions differed from others as seen in B20. Gait cycle phases showed an increase in the B20 condition for double stance phase and stance phase, swing phase presented reduction in the B20 condition. There were significant main effects in position for SL, SF, and walk ratio, in load only for stride width. The highest variability of spatiotemporal parameters occurred in the U20 condition. All load conditions with 20% BW showed a greater variability when compared to the 10% BW counterpart. Conclusion We concluded that young adults can cope with up to a 15% BW load under a bilateral back position, but in the frontal position not even a 10% BW load was proven to be a safe limit. 20% BW loads should be avoided in any position. These recommendations may assure increased gait stability, decreased trunk forward lean and decreased muscle activation and fatigue reducing back pain occurrence.

Objetivo: Caracterizar a unidade e os pacientes atendidos em uma Unidade de Queimados, entre janeiro de 2006 e dezembro de 2013. Método: Realizouse estudo epidemiológico descritivo, observacional, retrospectivo com abordagem quantitativa dos pacientes e da Unidade de Queimados, a partir de dados do serviço de estatística do hospital. Resultados: Em geral, o perfil dos pacientes atendidos nos últimos oito anos é de adultos em idade laboral e crianças menores de 10 anos, sexo masculino, vítimas de acidentes com líquidos inflamáveis ou aquecidos, apresentando queimaduras de 2° grau em cerca de 10 a 19% do corpo, sobretudo no tronco. O maior número de admissões (81) ocorreu em 2010, sendo que a maior taxa de ocupação (67,2%) da unidade se deu em 2007 e a menor (33,14%) em 2008, mesmo ano no qual foi observada a maior taxa de mortalidade (7,2%). Em contrapartida, a menor taxa de mortalidade foi observada em 2006 (1,6%). Cerca de 40% das internações tiveram duração inferior a dez dias. Dos 517 procedimentos cirúrgicos realizados dentro da unidade, 20% foram enxertos dérmico-epidérmicos. Conclusão: Houve pouca mudança no perfil epidemiológico dos atendimentos realizados nesta unidade em comparação com a década anterior. Entretanto, adequações físicas e metodológicas devem incluir estratégias focadas na criança e na perspectiva laboral de adultos.


Objective: To characterize the Burn Unit and its inpatients between January 2006 and December 2013. Methods: A descriptive, observational, retrospective epidemiological study with quantitative approach of the Burn Unit and its inpatients was performed with data from the hospital statistical service. Results: In general, the profile of the Burn Unit inpatients seen in the past eight years are adults in working age and children under 10 years old, victims of accidents with flammable and heated liquids, presenting second degree burns in about 10 to 19% of body surface area, especially on the trunk. The highest number of new admissions (81) occurred in 2010, with the highest occupancy rate in 2007 (67.2%) and lowest in 2008 (33.14%), the same year in which the highest mortality rate (7.2%) was observed. In contrast, the lowest mortality rate was observed in 2006 (1.6%). About 40% of the total admissions lasted less than ten days. From the 517 surgical procedures carried out inside the unit, 20% were dermal-epidermal grafts. Conclusion: There were little changes on the epidemiological profile of the delivered treatments in this unit when compared to the previous decade. However, physical and methodological adjustments should focus on child and on adults' occupational perspective.

Métodos: Estudio descriptivo, observacional, retrospectivo epidemiológico con un enfoque cuantitativo de los pacientes y de la Unidad de Quemados, a partir de los datos del servicio de estadísticas de los hospitales. Resultados: En general, el perfil de los pacientes atendidos en los últimos ocho años son adultos en edad de trabajar y los niños menores de 10 años de edad, de sexo masculino, las víctimas de accidentes con líquidos inflamables y con calefacción, que tienen respectivamente quemaduras 2° grado en aproximadamente el 10 -19% del cuerpo, especialmente en el tronco. Mayor número de admisiones (81) se produjo en 2010, y la tasa de ocupación más elevada (67,2%) de la unidad se produjo en 2007 y el más bajo (33,14%) en el año 2008. En cuanto a la tasa de mortalidad en 2008 que era (7,2%) y la más baja fue registrada en 20 (1,6%). Alrededor del 40% de las hospitalizaciones duró menos de diez días. 517 de los procedimientos quirúrgicos realizados dentro de la unidad, el 20% eran injertos dermo-epidérmica. Conclusión: Hubo pocos cambios en el perfil epidemiológico de la atención recibida en esta unidad en comparación con la década anterior. Sin embargo, los ajustes físicos y metodológicos deben incluir estrategias centradas en el niño y la perspectiva de trabajo los adultos.

Introduction: Individuals with mobility impairments associated with lower limb disabilities often face enormous challenges to participate in routine activities and to move around various environments. For many, the use of wheelchairs is paramount to provide mobility and social inclusion. Nevertheless, they still face a number of challenges to properly function in our society. Among the many difficulties, one in particular stands out: navigating in complex internal environments (indoors). The main objective of this work is to propose an architecture based on Mobile Augmented Reality to support the development of indoor navigation systems dedicated to wheelchair users, that is also capable of recording CAD drawings of the buildings and dealing with accessibility issues for that population. Methods Overall, five main functional requirements are proposed: the ability to allow for indoor navigation by means of Mobile Augmented Reality techniques; the capacity to register and configure building CAD drawings and the position of fiducial markers, points of interest and obstacles to be avoided by the wheelchair user; the capacity to find the best route for wheelchair indoor navigation, taking stairs and other obstacles into account; allow for the visualization of virtual directional arrows in the smartphone displays; and incorporate touch or voice commands to interact with the application. The architecture is proposed as a combination of four layers: User interface; Control; Service; and Infrastructure. A proof-of-concept application was developed and tests were performed with disable volunteers operating manual and electric wheelchairs. Results The application was implemented in Java for the Android operational system. A local database was used to store the test building CAD drawings and the position of fiducial markers and points of interest. The Android Augmented Reality library was used to implement Augmented Reality and the Blender open source library handled the basis for implementing directional navigation arrows. OpenGL ES provided support for various graphics and mathematical transformations for embedded systems, such as smartphones. Experiments were performed in an academic building with various labs, classrooms and male and female bathrooms. Two disable volunteers using wheelchairs showed no difficulties to interact with the application, either by entering touch or voice commands, and to navigate within the testing environment with the help of the navigational arrows implemented by the augmented reality modules. Conclusion The novel features implemented in the proposed architecture, with special emphasis on the use of Mobile Augmented Reality and the ability to identify the best routes free of potential hazards for wheelchair users, were capable of providing significant benefits for wheelchair indoor navigation when compared to current techniques described in the literature.

BACKGROUND: In the last years, several methods and devices have been proposed to record the human mandibular movements, since they provide quantitative parameters that support the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders. The techniques currently employed suffer from a number of drawbacks including high price, unnatural to use, lack of support for real-time analysis and mandibular movements recording as a pure rotation. In this paper, we propose a specialized optical motion capture system, which causes a minimum obstruction and can support 3D mandibular movement analysis in real-time. METHODS: We used three infrared cameras together with nine reflective markers that were placed at key points of the face. Some classical techniques are suggested to conduct the camera calibration and three-dimensional reconstruction and we propose some specialized algorithms to automatically recognize our set of markers and track them along a motion capture session. RESULTS: To test the system, we developed a prototype software and performed a clinical experiment in a group of 22 subjects. They were instructed to execute several movements for the functional evaluation of the mandible while the system was employed to record them. The acquired parameters and the reconstructed trajectories were used to confirm the typical function of temporomandibular joint in some subjects and to highlight its abnormal behavior in others. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed system is an alternative to the existing optical, mechanical, electromagnetic and ultrasonic-based methods, and intends to address some drawbacks of currently available solutions. Its main goal is to assist specialists in diagnostic and treatment of temporomandibular disorders, since simple visual inspection may not be sufficient for a precise assessment of temporomandibular joint and associated muscles.

This paper aims to establish the correlation between statistical parameters and Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals as a function of age, in subjects without neurological disorders. EEG signals were recorded during the task of following an Archimedes spiral. There were 59 healthy subjects who voluntarily participated in this study which were divided into 7 groups, aging between 20 to 86  years from both gender, in order to identify differences and allow discrimination between the features of each group. Initially, comparisons were made among several features (F20, F50, F80, F95, Mean Frequency, Root Mean Square value, Zero Crossings, Square of the Power Spectrum, Kurtosis, Skewness, Variance, Standard Deviation and Approximate Entropy) seeking separation between young and elderly groups. Furthermore, it was sought to correlate the statistical parameters and the entire age range. For this purpose it was used Linear Discriminant Analysis  (LDA). The data were processed with MATLAB® software. Through the LDA, significant differences were observed over the distinct age ranges. The tool has satisfactorily performed the separation of discriminant features by classifying groups of subjects in function of their age range.


O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer as correlações entre parâmetros estatísticos e EEG em função da idade, em indivíduos não portadores de distúrbios neurológicos. Os sinais EEG foram registrados durante a tarefa de seguir uma espiral de Arquimedes. 59 indivíduos saudáveis participaram do estudo e foram divididos em 7 grupos, com idades entre 20 a 86 anos, de ambos os sexos, para identificar diferenças e permitir a discriminação entre as características de cada grupo. Inicialmente, foram feitas comparações entre as diversas variáveis (F20, F50, F80, F95, Frequência Média, RMS, Cruzamentos por zero, Quadrado do Espectro de Potência, Curtose, Assimetria, Variância, Desvio Padrão e Entropia Aproximada) procurando a separação entre os grupos jovem e idoso. Buscou-se ainda correlacionar os parâmetros estatísticos e toda a faixa etária. Para tal, a técnica de Análise Discriminante Linear (ADL) foi utilizada. Os dados foram processados com o software MATLAB®. Por meio da ADL foram observadas diferenças significativas ao longo da idade. Observou-se que a ferramenta executou de forma satisfatória a separação de características discriminantes, classificando cada grupo de indivíduos em função da idade.

The advancement of knowledge in neurophysiology has demonstrated that acupuncture is a method of peripheral neural stimulation that promotes local and systemic reflexive responses. The purpose of this study was to determine if surface electromyography can be used as a tool to study the action of auricular acupuncture on striated skeletal muscle. The electromyographic amplitudes of the anterior, middle and posterior deltoid muscle and the upper trapezium muscle with 20%, 40% and 60% of maximal voluntary contraction of 15 healthy volunteers, were analyzed after the individuals were submitted to the auricular acupuncture treatment. The non-parametric Friedman test was used to compare Root Mean Square values estimated by using a 200 ms moving window. Significant results were further analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. In this exploratory study, the level of significance of each comparison was set to p<0.05. It was concluded in this study that a surface electromyography can be used as a tool to investigate possible alterations of electrical activity in muscles after auricular acupuncture. However there is still a lack of adequate methodology for its use in this type of study, being that the method used to record the electromyographic signal can also influence the results.
