The chemical composition and aroma profile of industrial essential oils (EOs) from species of rose grown in China, including the native Kushui rose (R. sertata × R. rugosa) and R. rugosa Thunb. cv. Plena, and the recently introduced Damask rose (R. damascena Mill.), were studied in comparison by means of GC/MS and GC-FID. More than 150 individual compounds were detected in Chinese rose samples, of which 112 were identified and their quantitative content determined, representing 88.7%, 96.7% and 97.9% of the total EO content, respectively. It was found that the main constituents of the Chinese rose EOs were representatives of terpenoid compounds (mono- and sesquiterpenoids, predominantly) and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Comparative chemical profiling revealed different chemical composition and aroma profiles: while the R. damascena oil showed a balance between the eleoptene and stearoptene fractions of the oil (the average ratio between the main terpene alcohols and paraffins was 2.65), in the Kushui and R. rugosa oils, the odorous liquid phase strongly dominated over the stearopten, with a ratio of 16.91 and 41.43, respectively. The most abundant terpene was citronellol, ranging from 36.69% in R. damascena to 48.32% in R. rugosa oil. In addition, the citronellol enantiomers distribution, which is an important marker for rose oil authenticity, was studied for the first time in R. rugosa oil.

In the tautomeric Schiff bases, derived from 7-hydroxyquinoline, two competitive channels are possible upon excitation of the enol tautomer, namely proton transfer (PT) through intramolecular hydrogen bonding to the corresponding keto form and trans-cis isomerization around the azomethine double bond. The former leads to switching, based on twist-assisted excited state intramolecular PT, where the long-range proton transfer can occur as a targeted process. The latter, determined by the flexibility of the crane part, reduces the efficiency of the main targeted process. In previously studied molecular switches based on the 7-hydroxyquinoline skeleton, only the intramolecular PT photo-process undergoing from the excited enol form towards the keto tautomer, which is in most cases barrierless, has been discussed. Therefore, in the current study, the ground state PT properties and isomerization of (E)-8-((phenylimino)methyl)quinolin-7-ol and (E)-8-(((pentafluorophenyl)imino)methyl)quinolin-7-ol are investigated in depth using the MP2 methodology, while the excited state energy profiles are calculated with the ADC(2) method. The obtained results are discussed in light of the existing experimental data.

The present study aimed to analyze and compare the chemical profile and antioxidant capacity of propolis from different bee species and different regions. The chemical profiles of propolis from six stingless bee species (Tetragonula iridipennis, T. laeviceps, Lepidotrigona terminata, L. ventralis, Lisotrigona carpenteri and Homotrigona apicalis) collected from a total of eight locations in Vietnam were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). More than 70 compounds were identified, amongst which phenolic lipids (cardanols, resorcinols and anacardic acids), aromatic acids, triterpenes and xanthones. Taxonomic markers for Mangifera indica (phenolic lipids and cycloartane triterpenes) were detected in propolis from bees of the genera Tetragonula and Lepidotrigona, although in different amounts, whereas propolis from H. apicalis was characterized by triterpenes of the amyrine type, typical of dipterocarp trees. A clear discrimination between both groups was observed by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). Propolis from Tetragonula and Lepidotrigona spp. and from Lisotrigona carpenteri, which is rich in xanthones, possesses higher radical scavenging and ferric-reducing capacity than that from H. apicalis. Propolis produced by all six stingless bee species in Vietnam was analyzed for the first time. In addition, this is the first report on L. carpenteri propolis.

Lavender (L. angustifolia Mill.) is an important essential oil-bearing and medicinal plant with high commercial value. Lavender scent components can be derived not only as an essential oil but also as lavender concrete or absolute. The development of reliable analytical methods for origin assessment and quality assurance is of significant fundamental importance and high practical interest. Therefore, a comprehensive chemical profiling of seven industrial samples of Bulgarian lavender absolute (L. angustifolia Mill.) was performed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). As a result, 111 individual compounds were identified by GC/MS, and their quantitative content was simultaneously determined by GC-FID, representing 94.28-97.43% of the total contents of the lavender absolute. According to our results, the main constituents of lavender absolute (LA) are representatives of the terpene compounds (with the dominating presence of oxygenated monoterpenes, 52.83-80.55%), followed by sesquiterpenes (7.80-15.21%) and triterpenoids (as minor components). Coumarins in various amounts (1.79-14.73%) and aliphatic compounds (hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, etc.) are found, as well. The acyclic monoterpene linalool is the main terpene alcohol and, together with its ester linalyl acetate, are the two main constituents in the LAs. Linalool was found in concentrations of 27.33-38.24% in the LA1-LA6 samples and 20.74% in the LA7 samples. The amount of linalyl acetate was in the range of 26.58 to 37.39% in the LA1-LA6 samples, while, surprisingly, it was not observed in LA7. This study shows that the chemical profile of the studied LAs is close to the lavender essential oil (LO), fulfilling most of the requirements of the International Standard ISO 3515:2002.

The tautomeric properties of favipiravir were investigated experimentally for the first time by using molecular spectroscopy (UV-Vis absorption, fluorescence and NMR), as well as DFT quantum-chemical calculations. According to the obtained results, the enol tautomer is substantially more stable in most of the organic solvents. In the presence of water, a keto form appears to be favored due to the specific solute-solvent interactions. Upon the addition of alkaline-earth-metal ions, deprotonation and complexation occurred simultaneously, giving the formation of 2 : 1 ligand : metal complexes. According to the theoretical simulations, the metal ion is captured between the carbonyl groups as a result of the size-fit effect.

A comprehensive chemical profiling of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (freon R134a) subcritical extracts from the main genotypes of oil-bearing roses, was performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) in order to reveal the differences in their chemical composition. One hundred and three individual compounds were identified using GC/MS and their quantitative content was determined using GC-FID, representing 89.8, 92.5, 89.7 and 93.7% of the total content of Rosa gallica L., Rosa damascena Mill., Rosa alba L. and Rosa centifolia L. extracts, respectively. The compounds found in the extracts are representatives of the following main chemical classes: mono-, sesqui- and triterpenoids, phenylethanoids and phenylpropanoids and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Fatty acids, esters and waxes were found, as well. The study revealed that 2-phenylethanol is the most abundant component, ranging 9.0-60.9% followed by nonadecane and nonadecene with 5.1-18.0% geraniol (2.9-14.4%), heneicosane (3.1-11.8%), tricosane (0.1-8.6%), nerol (1.3-6.1%) and citronellol (1.7-5.3%). The extracts demonstrate a specific chemical profile, depending on the botanical species-phenylethanoids and phenyl propanoids are the main group for R. damascena, aliphatic hydrocarbons for R. alba and R. centifolia, while both are found in almost equal amounts in R. gallica. The terpenoid compounds show relatively broad variations: monoterpenes-11.9-25.5% with maximum in R. centifolia; sesquiterpenes-0.6-7.0% with maximum in R. gallica and triterpenes-0.4-3.7% with maximum in R. gallica extract.

Snakes rely heavily on chemical cues when foraging, searching for mates, etc. Snakes' sex attractiveness pheromones comprise mainly heavy, semi-volatile compounds such as ketones. Here we investigated the composition of skin secretions of adult Vipera ammodytes (Linnaeus, 1758) individuals. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and the identification of the compounds was performed using commercial mass spectral libraries and retention times. The relative concentrations of all detected compounds were tested for significant differences between (1) male vs. female live individuals, (2) shed skin vs. live individuals, and (3) pre-reproductive vs. reproductive live individuals. We detected fifty-nine compounds of which six were ketones. Two ketones (2-pentacosanone and 2-heptacosanone) were present in many of the samples and thus may have an important role in the V. ammodytes chemical communication. We did not find significant differences between the relative concentrations of the compounds between male and female individuals (only three compounds are exceptions). Significant differences were found between extracts from shed skins and live individuals and between live pre-reproductive individuals and live reproductive individuals. The results of the study suggest that chemical communication in V. ammodytes involves less compounds in comparison to the known literature data for other species.

Raman spectroscopy, being able to provide rich information about the chemical composition of the sample, is gaining an increasing interest in the applications of food. Raman spectroscopy was used to analyze a set of wine samples (red and white) sourced from rarely studied traditional Bulgarian wines. One of the objectives of this study was to attempt the fast classification of Bulgarian wines according to variety and geographic origin. In addition, calibration models between phenolic compounds and Raman spectroscopy were developed using partial least squares (PLS) regression using cross-validation. Good calibration statistics were obtained for total phenolic compounds (by the Folin-Ciocalteu method) and total phenolic compounds and phenolic acids (spectrophotometrically at 280 nm) where the coefficient of determination (R2) and the standard error in the cross-validation (SECV) were 0.81 (474.2 mg/dm3 gallic acid), 0.87 (526.6 mg/dm3 catechin equivalents), and 0.81 (44.8 mg/dm3 caffeic equivalents), respectively. This study has demonstrated that Raman spectroscopy can be suitable for measuring phenolic compounds in both red and white wines.

Three polysaccharide complexes (PSCs) were isolated from the aerial parts of common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), and the flowers of common lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) and silver linden (Tilia tomentosa Moench) by boiling water extraction and ethanol precipitation. The chemical composition and immunomodulating effects of isolated PSCs were characterized. The chemical characterization revealed that the three samples contain mainly pectic polysaccharides. They exhibited ex vivo intestinal immunomodulating activity through the murine Peyer's patch-mediated bone marrow cell proliferation test at 100µg/ml concentration. At the same time, they stimulated ex vivo human blood T-cell populations (CD4+/CD25+ and CD8+/CD25+), phagocytic leukocytes (CD14+ and CD64+ cells) and induced IL-6 production from human white blood cells and Peyer's patch cells. The herbal PSCs stimulated ex vivo ROS production from whole blood phagocytes and showed unspecific in vitro anti-proliferative activity against normal and A549, HeLa and LS180 tumor cells. This is the first report on immunomodulating studies of linden flower pectins and chemical and biological activity characterization of lavender polysaccharides. Our study demonstrates that similarly to purslane, lavender and silver linden herbal materials contain immunomodulating polysaccharides that could be useful for support of compromised immune system.

The amount of sesquiterpene lactones and the lactone profile of Arnica montana L. in flowering and seed formation stages in vitro and in vivo propagated from seeds of German, Ukrainian, and Austrian origin and grown in two experimental fields were studied. It was found that in vitro propagated 2-year plants in full flowering stage accumulated higher amount of lactones in comparison to in vivo propagated 3-year plants and to the seed formation stage, respectively. Helenalins predominated in in vivo propagated 2-year or in vitro propagated 3-year plants. 2-Methylbutyrate (2MeBu) was the principal ester in the samples with prevalence of helenalins, while isobutyrate (iBu) was the major one in the samples with predominance of 11,13-dihydrohelenalins. The results revealed that the environmental conditions on Vitosha Mt. are more suitable for cultivation of A. montana giving higher content of lactones.

The essential-oil composition of six native populations of Sideritis scardica from Bulgaria was studied by GC-FID and GC/MS analyses. Altogether, 37 components, representing 73.1 to 79.2% of the total oil content were identified. Among them, α-pinene (4.4-25.1%), ß-pinene (2.8-18.0%), oct-1-en-3-ol (2.3-8.0%), phenylacetaldehyde (0.5-9.5%), ß-bisabolene (1.3-11.0%), benzyl benzoate (1.1-14.3%), and m-camphorene (1; 0.3-12.4%) were the main compounds. All samples were characterized by low contents of oxygenated mono- and sesquiterpenes (≤1.6 and 2.3%, resp.). Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) showed a significant variability in the chemical composition of the studied samples as well as a correlation between the oil profiles and the ecological conditions of the natural habitats of S. scardica.

RESUMO

Propolis is a honeybee product which bees produce by collecting resins from various botanical sources. The chemical composition of propolis is directly dependant on the availability of resinous plant materials in different geographic regions. This study was undertaken to evaluate the resinous plant sources used by bees to produce Mediterranean type propolis. Although this propolis type has already been the subject of numerous studies, its major botanical source had not yet been identified. In this study, using GC-MS analysis, we identify the resin of the common cypress, Cupressus_sempervirens, as the major plant source of the characteristic diterpene fingerprint profile of Mediterranean propolis.

Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae), or "rose root" is a perennial herbaceous plant, distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Pharmacological studies have shown that R. rosea exhibits different biological activities - antioxidant, antidepressant, anticancer, etc. The aim of this study was to compare the chemical composition of essential oils from rhizomes of three commercial samples of R. rosea originated from Bulgaria (sample 1), China (sample 2) and India (sample 3). The oils were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Thus, the main volatile component in the Bulgaria and Chinese R. rosea was geraniol, followed by myrthenol in sample 1 or octanol in sample 2. Phenethylalcohol was a principal constituent in the Indian oil. Myrtenol and octanol were in significant amounts too. Aliphatic hydrocarbons were characteristic of the latter sample. It is notable that cinnamyl alcohol, which was present in large concentration in Bulgarian sample, was not detected in the other two samples. The obtained results showed considerable differences in the composition of the studied three origins of R. rosea.

BACKGROUND: Mushrooms in the genus Agaricus have worldwide distribution and include the economically important species A. bisporus. Some Agaricus species are inedible, including A. placomyces and A. pseudopratensis, which are similar in appearance to certain edible species, yet are known to possess unpleasant odours and induce gastrointestinal problems if consumed. We have studied the chemical composition of these mushrooms using GC-MS. RESULTS: Our GC-MS studies on the volatile fractions and butanol extracts resulted in the identification of 44 and 34 compounds for A. placomyces and A. pseudopratensis, respectively, including fatty acids and their esters, amino acids, and sugar alcohols. The most abundant constituent in the volatiles and butanol were phenol and urea respectively. We also identified the presence of ergosterol and two Delta7-sterols. In addition, 5alpha,8alpha-Epidioxi-24(xi)-methylcholesta-6,22-diene-3beta-ol was isolated for the first time from both mushrooms. Our study is therefore the first report on the chemical composition of these two species. CONCLUSION: The results obtained contribute to the knowledge of the chemical composition of mushrooms belonging to the Agaricus genus, and provide some explanation for the reported mild toxicity of A. placomyces and A. pseudopratensis, a phenonomenon that can be explained by a high phenol content, similar to that found in other Xanthodermatei species.
