PURPOSE: To determine the interrater reliability (IRR) of thyroid eye disease (TED) photographic assessment using the VISA classification. To assess whether a VISA grading atlas improves ophthalmology trainees' performance in photographic assessment of TED. METHODS: A prospective, partially randomized, international study conducted from September 2021 to May 2022. Online study invitation was emailed to a volunteer sample group of 68 ophthalmology college accredited consultants and trainees, and 6 were excluded from the study. Participants were asked to score 10 patient photographs of TED using only the inflammation and motility restriction components of the VISA classification. IRR was compared between groups of practitioners by their level of experience. A clinical activity grading atlas was randomized to 50% of the ophthalmology trainees. RESULTS: Overall rater ICC was 0.96 for inflammation and 0.99 for motility restriction. No statistically significant difference in IRR between rater groups was identified. Trainees with a grading atlas had the highest IRR for inflammation (ICC = 0.95). Each subcomponent of the inflammation and motility restriction components of VISA classification had an ICC considered good to excellent. The mean overall rater score was 4.6/9 for inflammation and 3.5/12 for motility restriction. For motility restriction there was a reduced mean score variance among all raters when scoring photographs with more severe motility restriction. CONCLUSION: IRR using the inflammation and motility restriction components of the VISA classification was excellent. A VISA grading atlas improved trainee performance in grading inflammation.

Few studies have examined whether specific aspects of group identification predict problematic and non-problematic addictive behaviours and none have focused on gambling. Applying Leach et al.'s (2008) hierarchical model of in-group identification, we tested the associations between components of self-investment (satisfaction, solidarity, and centrality) and components of self-definition (individual self-stereotyping, in-group homogeneity) on distinguishing between problem and non-problem gambling (n = 10,157) and on the severity of problematic gambling behaviour (n = 2,568). Results showed that (i) in-group-based identities are important in predicting problematic vs. non-problematic gambling behaviours; (ii) in-group-based identities are important in predicting the severity of problematic gambling; (iii) how self-invested an individual is with their in-group and aspects associated with self-definition processes are both important predictors; (iv) perceptions related to how chronically salient one's group membership is for the self (centrality) are essential features of the self-investment mechanism; and (v) self-stereotypical beliefs about one's essential similarities to the prototypical gambling group member norm are fundamental for the defining oneself as a gambler.

PURPOSE: Chondral injuries secondary to traumatic patella dislocation are common, and a subgroup of these are significant defects with fragments amenable to fixation. There is a paucity of published evidence assessing patients managed with combined acute patellofemoral stabilisation and osteochondral fixation. The purpose of this study is to report the outcomes of patients with osteochondral injuries secondary to acute traumatic patella dislocation treated with combined early fragment fixation and MPFL reconstruction using a quadriceps tendon turndown technique which has distinct advantages for this cohort, including preventing chondral overloading and non-violation of the patella bone. METHODS: Patients who underwent combined quadriceps tendon MPFL reconstruction and osteochondral fixation were included. Patient demographics, defect characteristics, complications and reoperations were evaluated. Patients were assessed with Lysholm, Kujala, KOOS-PF scores and satisfaction scale at follow up. Pre-operative MRI was assessed for presence of radiological risk factors for patella dislocation and post-operative MRI was used to assess cartilage quality with MOCART 2.0 score. RESULTS: A total of 19 patients (63.2% female) were included. The mean age was 17.4 ± 4.8 years and patients were followed up at a mean 15.8 ± 5.1 months post-surgery. The mean defect size was 2.4 cm2 ± 1.3 cm2, with the most common defect location being the patella (13/19; 68.4%) followed by the lateral femoral condyle (5/19; 26.3%). At final follow up, the overall mean Lysholm, Kujala, and KOOS-PF scores were 84.9 ± 11.1, 89.7 ± 5.8 and 80.6 ± 13.6, respectively. Seventeen patients (89.5%) were satisfied with their outcome. The mean MOCART 2.0 score at final follow-up was 72.5. One patient required medial capsular plication with removal of a loose chondral body and microfracture and 3 knees required minor reoperations. CONCLUSION: Combined acute osteochondral fragment fixation and MPFL reconstruction using a quadriceps tendon graft offers good radiological and patient-reported outcomes with high satisfaction and low rates of recurrent patella dislocation. To our knowledge, this is currently the largest series of its kind in the literature and the results of this study provide a rationale for a combined approach using a quadriceps tendon graft for this cohort. BACKGROUND: Although the initial treatment recommendations for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) may include nonsurgical therapies such as injections and rehabilitation, many patients undergo isolated injections or a rudimentary exercise regimen. PURPOSE: To investigate the benefit of an intra-articular hip injection and concomitant structured exercise rehabilitation program in patients with symptomatic FAIS ≥6 months. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: For this study we recruited 49 patients with a mean age of 32.8 years (range, 16-56 years) and symptoms ≥6 months (range, 6-250 months) associated with FAIS, as confirmed via magnetic resonance imaging and radiography. After a guided intra-articular injection of corticosteroid and local anesthetic, patients underwent a structured 12-week rehabilitation program. Patients were assessed before and after injection (8 weeks and 4, 6, 12, and 24 months) with a range of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including the 33-item International Hip Outcome Tool, Hip Outcome Score, modified Harris Hip Score, the Tegner Activity Score, a visual analog scale assessing the frequency and severity of hip pain, and a Global Rating of Change scale. Range of motion, peak isometric hip strength, and hop tests were assessed. Absolute scores and limb symmetry indices were calculated. The percentage of patients transitioning toward surgery over the period was evaluated. RESULTS: Of the 44 patients who underwent the injection and completed the initial 8-week rehabilitation component, 14 (31.8%) progressed toward surgical intervention over the 24-month postinjection period owing to dissatisfaction and/or symptom recurrence. Patients who progressed toward surgery, as compared with those who did not, reported significantly worse (P < .05) PROMs presurgery and more pain within the first 4 weeks after injection. In the nonoperative cohort, a significant improvement (P < .05) in all PROMs was observed, with 93% of these patients satisfied overall. The Global Rating of Change did not improve, although this was measured only after the injection, reflecting no further significant perceived global change from 8 weeks to 24 months. A significant increase (P < .05) in all hip range of motion and most isometric strength measures was observed at 8 weeks after injection, with these improvements largely sustained until 24 months. Bilateral improvements in hop capacity were observed, with hop test LSIs significantly improving for the single (p = 0.009), triple (p = 0.029) and triple crossover (p = 0.005) hop tests for distance. CONCLUSION: Although 32% of patients progressed toward surgery, significant improvement in hip pain, symptoms, and physical function was observed in the majority of patients with symptomatic FAIS as a result of a targeted nonoperative management pathway consisting of an intra-articular injection and a structured exercise program.

Tumor behavior is intricately dependent on the oncogenic properties of cancer cells and their multi-cellular interactions. To understand these dependencies within the wider microenvironment, we studied over 270,000 single-cell transcriptomes and 100 microdissected whole exomes from 12 patients with kidney tumors, prior to validation using spatial transcriptomics. Tissues were sampled from multiple regions of the tumor core, the tumor-normal interface, normal surrounding tissues, and peripheral blood. We find that the tissue-type location of CD8+ T cell clonotypes largely defines their exhaustion state with intra-tumoral spatial heterogeneity that is not well explained by somatic heterogeneity. De novo mutation calling from single-cell RNA-sequencing data allows us to broadly infer the clonality of stromal cells and lineage-trace myeloid cell development. We report six conserved meta-programs that distinguish tumor cell function, and find an epithelial-mesenchymal transition meta-program highly enriched at the tumor-normal interface that co-localizes with IL1B-expressing macrophages, offering a potential therapeutic target.

Background: Malaria elimination and eradication efforts can be advanced by including transmission-blocking or reducing vaccines (TBVs) alongside existing interventions. Key transmission-blocking vaccine candidates, such as Pfs230 domain one and Pfs48/45 domain 3, should be genetically stable to avoid developing ineffective vaccines due to antigenic polymorphisms. We evaluated genetic polymorphism and temporal stability of Pfs230 domain one and Pfs48/45 domain three in Plasmodium falciparum parasites from western Kenya. Methods: Dry blood spots on filter paper were collected from febrile malaria patients reporting to community health facilities in endemic areas of Homa Bay and Kisumu Counties and an epidemic-prone area of Kisii County in 2018 and 2019. Plasmodium speciation was performed using eluted DNA and real-time PCR. Amplification of the target domains of the two Pfs genes was performed on P. falciparum positive samples. We sequenced Pfs230 domain one on 156 clinical isolates and Pfs48/45 domain three on 118 clinical isolates to infer the levels of genetic variability, signatures of selection, genetic diversity indices and perform other evolutionary analyses. Results: Pfs230 domain one had low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.15 × 10-2) with slight variation per study site. Six polymorphic sites with nonsynonymous mutations and eight haplotypes were discovered. I539T was a novel variant, whereas G605S was nearing fixation. Pfs48/45 domain three had a low π (0.063 × 10-2), high conservation index, and three segregating sites, resulting in nonsynonymous mutation and four haplotypes. Some loci of Pfs230 D1 were in positive or negative linkage disequilibrium, had negative or positive selection signatures, and others (1813, 1955) and (1813, 1983) had a history of recombination. Mutated loci pairs in Pfs48/45 domain three had negative linkage disequilibrium, and some had negative and positive Tajima's D values with no history of recombination events. Conclusion: The two transmission blocking vaccine candidates have low nucleotide diversity, a small number of zone-specific variants, high nucleotide conservation index, and high frequency of rare alleles. With the near fixation a polymorphic site and the proximity of mutated codons to antibody binding epitopes, it will be necessary to continue monitoring sequence modifications of these domains when designing TBVs that include Pfs230 and Pfs48/45 antigens.

BACKGROUND: Surgery for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) with venous tumour thrombus (VTT) extension into the renal vein (RV) and/or inferior vena cava (IVC) has high peri-surgical morbidity/mortality. NAXIVA assessed the response of VTT to axitinib, a potent tyrosine kinase inhibitor. METHODS: NAXIVA was a single-arm, multi-centre, Phase 2 study. In total, 20 patients with resectable clear cell RCC and VTT received upto 8 weeks of pre-surgical axitinib. The primary endpoint was percentage of evaluable patients with VTT improvement by Mayo level on MRI. Secondary endpoints were percentage change in surgical approach and VTT length, response rate (RECISTv1.1) and surgical morbidity. RESULTS: In all, 35% (7/20) patients with VTT had a reduction in Mayo level with axitinib: 37.5% (6/16) with IVC VTT and 25% (1/4) with RV-only VTT. No patients had an increase in Mayo level. In total, 75% (15/20) of patients had a reduction in VTT length. Overall, 41.2% (7/17) of patients who underwent surgery had less invasive surgery than originally planned. Non-responders exhibited lower baseline microvessel density (CD31), higher Ki67 and exhausted or regulatory T-cell phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: NAXIVA provides the first Level II evidence that axitinib downstages VTT in a significant proportion of patients leading to reduction in the extent of surgery. OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests that exposure to alcohol primes (i.e., stimuli associated with alcohol) affects drinkers' perceptions and behaviors. The present study investigated the effects of an environmental alcohol prime (being in a simulated bar setting) and a safe sex message prime (a public health safe sex message) on sexually active alcohol drinkers. METHOD: Participants (n = 80) were assigned to one of four conditions according to priming allocation and engaged in a simulated video chat with a potential partner. They reported their sex-related self-perceptions and perceptions of a potential partner upon procedural completion. RESULTS: The alcohol-related environmental prime led participants to rate their potential partner as being significantly less inhibited and more sexual. The safe sex message significantly reduced reported sex-related self-perceptions and perceptions of their partners' disinhibition. There was a significant effect of primes on participants' perceptions of their partner's friendliness--participants exposed to either or both prime(s) perceived their partner as being friendlier than participants exposed to no prime. CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest that environmental alcohol primes may strengthen sexually active drinkers' perceptions of a potential partner's disinhibition and sexuality even before alcohol consumption begins, and that a safe sex message may moderate these effects. The presence of safe sex messages in alcohol-related environments may positively influence sexual risk decision making among sexually active drinkers.

Identifying meaningful predictors of therapeutic efficacy from preclinical studies is challenging. However, clinical manifestations occurring in both patients and mammalian models offer significant translational value. Many neurological disorders, including inherited, metabolic Niemann-Pick disease, type C (NPC), exhibit ataxia. Both individuals with NPC and murine models manifest ataxia, and investigational therapies impacting this phenotype in mice have been reported to slow disease progression in patients (e.g. miglustat, intrathecal 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, and acetyl-L-leucine). Reproducible phenotypic scoring of animal models can facilitate comparisons between genotypes, sexes, disease course, and therapies. Previously, other groups have developed a composite phenotypic scoring system (CPSS), which was subsequently used to distinguish strain-dependent phenotypes and, with modifications, to evaluate potential therapies. However, high inter-rater reliability is paramount to widespread use. We have created a comprehensive, easy-to-follow phenotypic assessment based on the CPSS and have verified its reproducibility using murine models of NPC disease. Application of this scoring system is not limited to NPC disease and may be applicable to other models of neurodegeneration exhibiting motor incoordination, thereby increasing its utility in translational studies.

BACKGROUND: Leading transmission-blocking vaccine candidates such as Plasmodium falciparum surface protein 25 (Pfs25 gene) may undergo antigenic alterations which may render them ineffective or allele-specific. This study examines the level of genetic diversity, signature of selection and drivers of Pfs25 polymorphisms of parasites population in regions of western Kenya with varying malaria transmission intensities. METHODS: Dry blood spots (DBS) were collected in 2018 and 2019 from febrile outpatients with malaria at health facilities in malaria-endemic areas of Homa Bay, Kisumu (Chulaimbo) and the epidemic-prone highland area of Kisii. Parasites DNA were extracted from DBS using Chelex method. Species identification was performed using real-time PCR. The 460 base pairs (domains 1-4) of the Pfs25 were amplified and sequenced for a total of 180 P. falciparum-infected blood samples. RESULTS: Nine of ten polymorphic sites were identified for the first time. Overall, Pfs25 exhibited low nucleotide diversity (0.04×10-2) and low mutation frequencies (1.3% to 7.7%). Chulaimbo had the highest frequency (15.4%) of mutated sites followed by Kisii (6.7%) and Homa Bay (5.1%). Neutrality tests of Pfs25 variations showed significant negative values of Tajima's D (-2.15, p<0.01) and Fu's F (-10.91, p<0.001) statistics tests. Three loci pairs (123, 372), (364, 428) and (390, 394) were detected to be under linkage disequilibrium and none had history of recombination. These results suggested that purifying selection and inbreeding might be the drivers of the observed variation in Pfs25. CONCLUSION: Given the low level of nucleotide diversity, it is unlikely that a Pfs25 antigen-based vaccine would be affected by antigenic variations. However, continued monitoring of Pfs25 immunogenic domain 3 for possible variants that might impact vaccine antibody binding is warranted.

Differentiating aggressive clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) from indolent lesions is challenging using conventional imaging. This work prospectively compared the metabolic imaging phenotype of renal tumors using carbon-13 MRI following injection of hyperpolarized [1-13C]pyruvate (HP-13C-MRI) and validated these findings with histopathology. Nine patients with treatment-naïve renal tumors (6 ccRCCs, 1 liposarcoma, 1 pheochromocytoma, 1 oncocytoma) underwent pre-operative HP-13C-MRI and conventional proton (1H) MRI. Multi-regional tissue samples were collected using patient-specific 3D-printed tumor molds for spatial registration between imaging and molecular analysis. The apparent exchange rate constant (kPL) between 13C-pyruvate and 13C-lactate was calculated. Immunohistochemistry for the pyruvate transporter (MCT1) from 44 multi-regional samples, as well as associations between MCT1 expression and outcome in the TCGA-KIRC dataset, were investigated. Increasing kPL in ccRCC was correlated with increasing overall tumor grade (ρ = 0.92, p = 0.009) and MCT1 expression (r = 0.89, p = 0.016), with similar results acquired from the multi-regional analysis. Conventional 1H-MRI parameters did not discriminate tumor grades. The correlation between MCT1 and ccRCC grade was confirmed within a TCGA dataset (p < 0.001), where MCT1 expression was a predictor of overall and disease-free survival. In conclusion, metabolic imaging using HP-13C-MRI differentiates tumor aggressiveness in ccRCC and correlates with the expression of MCT1, a predictor of survival. HP-13C-MRI may non-invasively characterize metabolic phenotypes within renal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To explore translational biological and imaging biomarkers for sunitinib treatment before and after debulking nephrectomy in the NeoSun (European Union Drug Regulating Authorities Clinical Trials Database [EudraCT] number: 2005-004502-82) single-centre, single-arm, single-agent, Phase II trial. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Treatment-naïve patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) received 50 mg once daily sunitinib for 12 days pre-surgically, then post-surgery on 4 week-on, 2 week-off, repeating 6-week cycles until disease progression in a single arm phase II trial. Structural and dynamic contrast-enhanced magnet resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) and research blood sampling were performed at baseline and after 12 days. Computed tomography imaging was performed at baseline and post-surgery then every two cycles. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors [RECIST]) excluding the resected kidney. Secondary endpoints included changes in DCE-MRI of the tumour following pre-surgery sunitinib, overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), response duration, surgical morbidity/mortality, and toxicity. Translational and imaging endpoints were exploratory. RESULTS: A total of 14 patients received pre-surgery sunitinib, 71% (10/14) took the planned 12 doses. All underwent nephrectomy, and 13 recommenced sunitinib postoperatively. In all, 58.3% (seven of 12) of patients achieved partial or complete response (PR or CR) (95% confidence interval 27.7-84.8%). The median OS was 33.7 months and median PFS was 15.7 months. Amongst those achieving a PR or CR, the median response duration was 8.7 months. No unexpected surgical complications, sunitinib-related toxicities, or surgical delays occurred. Within the translational endpoints, pre-surgical sunitinib significantly increased necrosis, and reduced cluster of differentiation-31 (CD31), Ki67, circulating vascular endothelial growth factor-C (VEGF-C), and transfer constant (KTrans , measured using DCE-MRI; all P < 0.05). There was a trend for improved OS in patients with high baseline plasma VEGF-C expression (P = 0.02). Reduction in radiological tumour volume after pre-surgical sunitinib correlated with high percentage of solid tumour components at baseline (Spearman's coefficient ρ = 0.69, P = 0.02). Conversely, the percentage tumour volume reduction correlated with lower baseline percentage necrosis (coefficient = -0.51, P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: Neoadjuvant studies such as the NeoSun can safely and effectively explore translational biological and imaging endpoints.

PURPOSE: To present a case of paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM) associated with transient loss of vision from eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA)-associated ischaemic vasculitis. METHODS: Case report and review of literature. RESULTS: A 52 year-old man presented with recurrent episodes of amaurosis of the right eye. A diagnosis of EGPA was established with the combination of late-onset asthma, peripheral eosinophilia, patchy parenchymal consolidation and diffuse pansinusitis. Fundus examination displayed cotton wool spots in the right eye. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) of the macula showed features of paracentral focal inner nuclear layer/outer plexiform layer hyperreflectivity consistent with PAMM. He was treated with corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide. At 2-months following treatment his EGPA was in remission, the patient reported no recurrence of visual symptoms. Dilated fundoscopy revealed resolution of the cotton wool spots. A repeat OCT macula showed resolution of PAMM. CONCLUSION: Our case supports sublethal hypoxia of the middle retinal layers as the underlying mechanism for PAMM. Ophthalmologists should be cognizant to look for PAMM on OCT in patients presenting with transient visual loss and be aware of EGPA-associated ischaemic vasculitis as a rare cause of amaurosis.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for diagnosing Plasmodium falciparum infection is microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears. The effectiveness of this procedure for infection surveillance and malaria control may be limited by a relatively high parasitaemia detection threshold. Persons with microscopically undetectable infections may go untreated, contributing to ongoing transmission to mosquito vectors. The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude and determinants of undiagnosed submicroscopic P. falciparum infections in a rural area of western Kenya. METHODS: A health facility-based survey was conducted, and 367 patients seeking treatment for symptoms consistent with uncomplicated malaria in Homa Bay County were enrolled. The frequency of submicroscopic P. falciparum infection was measured by comparing the prevalence of infection based on light microscopic inspection of thick blood smears versus real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting P. falciparum 18S rRNA gene. Long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) use, participation in nocturnal outdoor activities, and gender were considered as potential determinants of submicroscopic infections. RESULTS: Microscopic inspection of blood smears was positive for asexual P. falciparum parasites in 14.7% (54/367) of cases. All of these samples were confirmed by RT-PCR. 35.8% (112/313) of blood smear negative cases were positive by RT-PCR, i.e., submicroscopic infection, resulting in an overall prevalence by RT-PCR alone of 45.2% compared to 14.7% for blood smear alone. Females had a higher prevalence of submicroscopic infections (35.6% or 72 out of 202 individuals, 95% CI 28.9-42.3) compared to males (24.2%, 40 of 165 individuals, 95% CI 17.6-30.8). The risk of submicroscopic infections in LLIN users was about half that of non-LLIN users (OR = 0.59). There was no difference in the prevalence of submicroscopic infections of study participants who were active in nocturnal outdoor activities versus those who were not active (OR = 0.91). Patients who participated in nocturnal outdoor activities and use LLINs while indoors had a slightly higher risk of submicroscopic infection than those who did not use LLINs (OR = 1.48). CONCLUSION: Microscopic inspection of blood smears from persons with malaria symptoms for asexual stage P. falciparum should be supplemented by more sensitive diagnostic tests in order to reduce ongoing transmission of P. falciparum parasites to local mosquito vectors.

Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is a water desalination technology employing porous electrodes and ion-exchange membranes. The electrodes are cyclically charged to adsorb ions and discharged to desorb ions. During MCDI operation, a difference in pH between feed and effluent water is observed, changing over time, which can cause the precipitation of hardness ions and consequently affect the long-term stability of electrodes and membranes. These changes can be attributed to different phenomena, which can be divided into two distinct categories: Faradaic and non-Faradaic. In the present work, we show that during long-term operation, as the electrodes age over time, the magnitude and direction of pH changes shift. We studied these changes for two different feed water solutions: a NaCl solution and a tap water solution. Whereas we observe a pH decrease during the regeneration with a NaCl solution, we observe an increase during regeneration with tap water, potentially resulting in the precipitation of hardness ions. We compare our experimental findings with theory and conclude that with aged electrodes, non-Faradaic processes are the prominent cause of pH changes. Furthermore, we find that for desalination with tap water, the adsorption and desorption of HCO3-and CO32- ions affect the pH changes.

The aim of the present study is to quantify hydrogen peroxide, generated from various types of honey produced in Crete, as a potent antimicrobial agent, and establish any correlation with their physicochemical parameters. The basic physicochemical parameters (diastase activity, HMF content, moisture, electrical conductivity, color, and sugars) of 30 authentic honey samples were determined. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide in all samples was found to be within the range 0.010-0.092 mM. The known correlation between the electrical conductivity and the color of honey was confirmed in this study. Univariate and multivariate statistics applied to the results indicate that the results can be used to discriminate honey sample groups of different botanical origins.

Objectives: Alcohol use remains a public health concern with accumulating evidence pointing to alcohol-associated prospective memory (PM) deficits. PM is the cognitive ability to remember to perform an intended action at some point in the future. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched the evidence base to identify and explore the evidence of a relationship between alcohol use and PM. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in Medline, Embase, Pubmed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science databases. Studies were included if they met the following criteria: English language publication, healthy adult participants (16 years and over), primary data on the effects of alcohol on PM. Results: Eight peer-reviewed studies were eligible for inclusion, of which five were randomized controlled trials examining the acute effects of a mild dose of alcohol and three were cross-sectional studies assessing the long-term effects of different drinking patterns on PM. Four main findings were supported by the literature: (1) compared with placebo, an acute administration of a mild alcohol dose to healthy social drinkers may lead to poorer PM performance, (2) alcohol consumption over the recommended weekly units can be associated with impaired PM function, (3) other cognitive domains can play a contributing role in alcohol-induced PM impairment, and (4) following future event simulation alcohol-induced PM impairment may be improved. Conclusion: Alcohol consumption potentially impairs PM, even at a low modest dose. Considering the small number of studies and their methodological flaws, additional research is needed to decipher the alcohol-PM relationship and provide further supporting evidence.
