RESUMO

The "precursor approach" has proved particularly valuable for the preparation of insoluble and unstable π-conjugated polycyclic compounds (π-CPCs), which cannot be synthesized via in-solution organic chemistry, for their improved processing, as well as for their electronic investigation both at the material and single-molecule scales. This method relies on the synthesis and processing of soluble and stable direct precursors of the target π-CPCs, followed by their final conversion in situ, triggered by thermal activation, photoirradiation or redox control. Beside well-established reactions involving the elimination of carbon-based small molecules, i.e., retro-Diels-Alder and decarbonylation processes, the late-stage extrusion of chalcogen fragments has emerged as a highly promising synthetic tool to access a wider variety of π-conjugated polycyclic structures and thus to expand the potentialities of the "precursor approach" for further improvements of molecular materials' performances. This review gives an overview of synthetic strategies towards π-CPCs involving the ultimate elimination of chalcogen fragments upon thermal activation, photoirradiation and electron exchange.

RESUMO

Novel hybrid porphyrin(2.1.2.1)s and their boron and copper complexes were synthesized using the "toy bricks" synthetic method. Crystal data, frontier molecular orbital calculations, and electrostatic potential surface maps reveal that hybridization in the porphyrin(2.1.2.1) donor-acceptor unit controls the selective coordination of BF2.

RESUMO

To investigate the host ability of a simple macrocycle, 1,3-phenylene-bridged naphthalene hexamer N6, we evaluated the complexation of N6 with fullerenes in toluene and in the crystals. The complexes in the solid-state demonstrate the one-dimensional alignment of fullerenes. The single-crystals of the C60@N6 composite have semiconductive properties revealed by photoconductivity measurements.

RESUMO

Molecular design strategy to control the crystal structure of two-dimensional (2D) π-extended organic semiconductors has not been intensively explored. We synthesized an unsymmetric tetrabenzoporphyrin derivative (TIPS-Ph-BP) to demonstrate the effect of molecular symmetry on crystal packing. TIPS-Ph-BP formed an antiparallel slipped π-stacking and 2D herringbone-like structure. An unsymmetric structure would make 2D π-stacking more stable than a one-dimensional (1D) columnar structure to counteract steric and electronic imbalance in the crystal. As a result, TIPS-Ph-BP achieved the high hole mobility of 0.71 cm2 V-1 s-1.

RESUMO

Fused-benzoheptagon-installed NiII porphyrins were synthesized by a protocol consisting of (2-formyl)arylation at the meso-position(s) of NiII porphyrins, conversion of formyl group to methoxyethene group by Wittig reaction, and final Bi(OTf)3 -catalyzed cyclization. The structures of these porphyrins have been revealed by X-ray analysis. Owing to the installed heptagon ring(s), these porphyrins show curved structures with conformational flexibility. Dimer has been shown to have a small activation barrier for inversion and to capture C60 and C70 with large association constants with adjustable conformational changes.

RESUMO

1ReH•Cl, a highly robust and antiaromatic rhenium(I) complex of triarylrosarin, is synthesized. The 1H NMR spectrum of 1ReH•Cl shows upfield-shifted pyrrole protons and highly downfield-shifted inner protons that confirm its antiaromatic nature, with density functional theory calculations strongly supporting this interpretation. Antiaromatic 1ReH•Cl absorbs from the UV to near-IR region of the optical spectrum; cyclic voltammetry, thin-layer UV-vis spectroelectrochemistry, and spin-density distributions clearly reveal that the rosarin backbone of 1ReH•Cl undergoes redox chemistry. The X-ray structure of 1ReH•Cl shows a fully coordinated and protonated inner cavity that effectively prevents proton-coupled electron transfer when treated with an acid. A remarkably negative NICS(0) value, clockwise anisotropy of the induced current density ring current, and the aromatic shielded inner cavity in the 2D ICSS(0) map reveal that the T1 state of 1ReH•Cl is aromatic based on Baird's rule.

RESUMO

An atropisomerism of large cycloarylenes was studied using [n]cyclo-4,10-pyrenylenes (n=6-21) as an illustrative example with two simple assumptions: (1) alternating configurations (R,S,R,S,…) are thermodynamically most stable, and (2) three consecutive identical configurations (R,R,R or S,S,S) are prevented. Ni-mediated coupling of a 5,9-diiodopyrene gave a series of directly-linked cyclic pyrene oligomers in one-pot reaction. As-synthesized cyclic hexamer was assigned as an (R,S,S,R,R,S) structure, converted into an (R,S,R,S,R,S)-form upon heating. Cyclic heptamer consists of two types of C2 symmetric structures predicted from assumption (2), one of which was convergent to one another by heating. Three atropisomers of cyclic octamer were analyzed from the possible five candidates by means of 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and the conversion process to (R,S,R,S,R,S,R,S) configurations upon heating was investigated. In total, according to two simple rules, the analysis of atropisomerism could be performed smoothly.

RESUMO

The molecular structure, electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) features of two CoII porphyrin(2.1.2.1) complexes bearing Ph or F5 Ph groups at the two meso-positions of the macrocycle are examined. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveal a highly bent, nonplanar macrocyclic conformation of the complex resulting in clamp-shaped molecular structures. Cyclic voltammetry paired with UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry in PhCN/0.1 M TBAP suggest that the first electron addition corresponds to a macrocyclic-centered reduction while spectral changes observed during the first oxidation are consistent with a metal-centered CoII /CoIII process. The activity of the clamp-shaped complexes towards heterogeneous ORR in 0.1 M KOH show selectivity towards the 4e- ORR pathway giving H2 O. DFT first-principle calculations on the porphyrin catalyst indicates a lower overpotential for 4e- ORR as compared to the 2e- pathway, consistent with experimental data.

RESUMO

2,7,12,17-Tetrakis(pinacolatoboryl) NiII porphyrin 5 Ni was synthesized in 75 % yield by Ir-catalyzed borylation of porphine followed by NiII metalation and has been demonstrated to be a useful synthon, giving 2,7,12,17-tetraaryated NiII porphyrins 6 a-d, peripherally octaarylated NiII porphyrins 8 a-d, quadruply bridged face-to-face non-offset NiII -porphyrin dimer 12, and cross-shaped ß-meso singly linked porphyrin pentamers and nonamers. Oxidation of cross-shaped ß-meso singly linked porphyrin pentamers 14 Ni and 14 Zn gave fused pentameric tapes 15 Ni and 15 Zn. The structures of 12, 14 Zn, and 15 Ni have been revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Optical separation of 12 has been accomplished, showing a bisignate coupling pattern for exciton-coupled blue-shifted Soret band. Pentameric porphyrin tape 15 Zn exhibits a red-shifted absorption band at 1156 nm and seven reversible redox waves.

RESUMO

Organic cathode materials have attracted extensive research interest for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their diverse structures and tunable properties. However, the preparation of organic cathode materials with high capacities, long cycling life, and high energy densities still remains a big challenge. To address these issues, we designed and synthesized a novel multinitro-decorated organic small molecule, N4,N4''-bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)-5'-(4-((2,4-dinitrophenyl)amino)phenyl)-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-diamine (TAPB-6NO2), where the unique electronic character of nitro group should enable TAPB-6NO2 to be a promising cathode candidate for LIBs. We found that the introduction of multiple nitro groups could efficiently reduce the solubility of TAPB-6NO2 in organic electrolytes, resulting in a high specific capacity of around 180 mAh g-1 and stable cycling with a capacity retention of 91% after 1100 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. This work suggests that attaching multiple nitro groups on a small molecule is an effective approach to construct high-performance organic cathode materials for stable and sustainable rechargeable LIBs.

RESUMO

We demonstrate on-surface deprotection of methylenedioxy groups which yielded graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with edges functionalized by hydroxy groups. While anthracene trimer precursors functionalized with hydroxy groups did not yield GNRs, it was found that hydroxy groups are first protected as methylenedioxy groups and then deprotected during the cyclo-dehydrogenation process to form GNRs with hydroxy groups. The X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy studies revealed that ∼20% of the methylenedioxy turned into hydroxy groups, while the others were hydrogen-terminated. The first-principles density functional theory (DFT) study on the cyclo-dehydrogenation process was performed to investigate the deprotection mechanism, which indicates that hydrogen atoms emerging during the cyclo-dehydrogenation process trigger the deprotection of methylenedioxy groups. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy study and DFT revealed a significant charge transfer from hydroxy to the Au substrate, causing an interface dipole and the HOMO being closer to the Fermi level when compared with hydrogen-terminated GNR/Au(111). This result demonstrates on-surface deprotection and indicates a possible new route to obtain GNRs with desired edge functionalization, which can be a critical component for high-performance devices.

RESUMO

The high design flexibility of organic semiconductors should lead to diverse and complex electronic functions. However, currently available high-performance organic semiconductors are limited in variety; most of p-type materials are based on thienoacenes or related one-dimensionally (1D) extended π-conjugated systems. In an effort to expand the diversity of organic semiconductors, we are working on the development of tetrabenzoporphyrin (BP) derivatives as active-layer components of organic electronic devices. BP is characterized by its large, rigid two-dimensionally (2D) extended π-framework with high light absorptivity and therefore is promising as a core building unit of organic semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. Herein, we demonstrate that BP derivatives can afford field-effect hole mobilities of >4 cm2 V-1 s-1 upon careful tuning of substituents. Comparative analysis of a series of 5,15-bis(n-alkyldimethylsilylethynyl)tetrabenzoporphyrins reveals that linear alkyl substituents disrupt the π-π stacking of BP cores, unlike the widely observed "fastener effect" for 1D extended π-systems. The n-octyl and n-dodecyl groups have the best balance between high solution processability and minimal π-π stacking disruption, leading to superior hole mobilities in solution-processed thin films. The resulting thin films show high thermal stability wherein the field-effect hole mobility stays above 1 cm2 V-1 s-1 even after heating at 160 °C in air, reflecting the tight packing of large BP units. These findings will serve as a good basis for extracting the full potential of 2D extended π-frameworks and thus for increasing the structural or functional diversities of high-performance organic semiconductors.

RESUMO

Mono-/diboron complexes with saddle-shaped molecular conformations were synthesized from porphyrins(2.1.2.1). The boron complexes have unique structure-dependent photophysical properties: (a) monoboron complexes 2a and 2b are not emissive in solution and the solid state, (b) diboron complex 3a shows red emission in toluene, and (c) diboron complex 3b shows aggregation-induced emission (AIE) in the deep-red region due to intermolecular secondary interactions (F-π). This is the first case of a boron porphyrinoid complex that shows AIE emission in the deep-red region in decades.

RESUMO

Novel 24π antiaromatic and 26π aromatic meso-aryl rosarins were successfully obtained for the first time from ß-free bipyrrole through a one-pot synthesis. Because of the absence of substituents at the ß-positions of the pyrrole units, the ß-free pristine rosarin backbones were highly planar, as confirmed using X-ray crystallography. Optical measurements indicated interconversion between 24π antiaromatic and 26π aromatic ß-free pristine rosarin via redox reactions, which was not observed in distorted ß-dodecamethyl rosarin.

RESUMO

Heteroatom substitution in acenes allows tailoring of their remarkable electronic properties, expected to include spin-polarization and magnetism for larger members of the acene family. Here, we present a strategy for the on-surface synthesis of three undecacene analogs substituted with four nitrogen atoms on an Au(111) substrate, by employing specifically designed diethano-bridged precursors. A similarly designed precursor is used to synthesize the pristine undecacene molecule. By comparing experimental features of scanning probe microscopy with ab initio simulations, we demonstrate that the ground state of the synthesized tetraazaundecacene has considerable open-shell character on Au(111). Additionally, we demonstrate that the electronegative nitrogen atoms induce a considerable shift in energy level alignment compared to the pristine undecacene, and that the introduction of hydro-aza groups causes local anti-aromaticity in the synthesized compounds. Our work provides access to the precise fabrication of nitrogen-substituted acenes and their analogs, potential building-blocks of organic electronics and spintronics, and a rich playground to explore π-electron correlation.

RESUMO

Anthriporphyrinoid and its dimeric homologues were synthesized by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and subsequent oxidation. Both porphyrinoids were smoothly converted to their PdII complexes and were further decorated by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling with thiophene derivatives and subsequent oxidative fusion reaction to provide multiply fused compounds. Most PdII anthriporphyrinoids have been structurally well characterized to be planar for monomeric and helically twisted for dimeric species. The dimeric anthriporphyrinoids show paratropic ring currents due to their global antiaromatic networks, the extent of which increases with an increase of conjugated network. Multiply fused dimeric anthriporphyrinoids show helical structures, fully reversible six redox potentials, small HOMO-LUMO gaps, and absorption tails reaching in the near-infrared region, suggesting the high potential of this approach to explore molecular graphene. Optical separations of the dimeric helical species were accomplished, and racemization barrier heights were determined.

RESUMO

A highly distorted binuclear rhodium(I) complex, 2Rh, was successfully synthesized from hexaphyrin(2.1.2.1.2.1) containing dimethylvinylene-bridges between dipyrrin units. IR spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography revealed that the complex 2Rh consists of two rhodium(I) ions coordinated to two dipyrrin units. Rh complexation induced a transformation from a trans-/cis-/trans- to trans-/cis-/cis-conformation on the dimethylvinylene-bridges. This is the first example of rhodium(I)-ion-induced cis-/trans-isomerization in the porphyrin derivatives. Theoretical calculations of 2Rh predicted the presence of intramolecular charge-transfer absorption due to the distorted molecular structure.

RESUMO

Optically active fullerenes, including C60 and C70 derivatives carrying organic substituents, are used in a range of applications because of their unique spectroscopic, catalytic, and chiral recognition properties. However, their inherent photoexcited chirality is yet to be elucidated because of their very poor fluorescence quantum yield (Φf). We synthesised a new chiral C70 derivative, X70A, with 20% yield, by reacting bis-borylated xanthene with C70 in a one-step double addition reaction, followed by a successful optical resolution. The isolation of two separate X70A enantiomers was confirmed by mirror-image circular dichroism spectroscopy in the range of 300-750 nm. In toluene, the enantiomeric pair of X70A clearly revealed mirror-image circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectra with a high |glum| value of 7.0 × 10-3 at 690 nm. The first fullerene-based deep-red CPL of X70A should provide a new guideline for the design of chiral nanocarbon materials.
