RESUMO

Studies of the Venusian mesosphere provide important information about the current state of the entire Venusian atmosphere. This includes information about the dense cloud structure, its vertical thermal profile, temperature fields, and the resulting dynamical and meteorological processes that contribute to a deeper understanding of the climatologically different evolutionary paths of Earth and Venus. However, the last measurements were acquired in 1983 during Venera-15 mission. In this paper, results of mid-infrared spectral measurements of the Venusian atmosphere are presented. Here we show Mercury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (MERTIS) measurements of the Venusian atmosphere during the second flyby of BepiColombo mission on its way to Mercury. Our Venus measurements provide reliable retrievals of mesospheric temperature profiles and cloud parameters between 60 and 75 km altitude, although MERTIS was only designed to operate in Mercury environment. Our results are in good agreement with the Venera-15 mission findings. This indicates the stability of the Venusian atmosphere on time scales of decades.

RESUMO

The measured nitrogen-to-carbon ratio in comets is lower than for the Sun, a discrepancy which could be alleviated if there is an unknown reservoir of nitrogen in comets. The nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko exhibits an unidentified broad spectral reflectance feature around 3.2 micrometers, which is ubiquitous across its surface. On the basis of laboratory experiments, we attribute this absorption band to ammonium salts mixed with dust on the surface. The depth of the band indicates that semivolatile ammonium salts are a substantial reservoir of nitrogen in the comet, potentially dominating over refractory organic matter and more volatile species. Similar absorption features appear in the spectra of some asteroids, implying a compositional link between asteroids, comets, and the parent interstellar cloud.

RESUMO

Solar heating of a cometary surface provides the energy necessary to sustain gaseous activity, through which dust is removed1,2. In this dynamical environment, both the coma3,4 and the nucleus5,6 evolve during the orbit, changing their physical and compositional properties. The environment around an active nucleus is populated by dust grains with complex and variegated shapes7, lifted and diffused by gases freed from the sublimation of surface ices8,9. The visible colour of dust particles is highly variable: carbonaceous organic material-rich grains10 appear red while magnesium silicate-rich11,12 and water-ice-rich13,14 grains appear blue, with some dependence on grain size distribution, viewing geometry, activity level and comet family type. We know that local colour changes are associated with grain size variations, such as in the bluer jets made of submicrometre grains on comet Hale-Bopp15 or in the fragmented grains in the coma16 of C/1999 S4 (LINEAR). Apart from grain size, composition also influences the coma's colour response, because transparent volatiles can introduce a substantial blueing in scattered light, as observed in the dust particles ejected after the collision of the Deep Impact probe with comet 9P/Tempel 117. Here we report observations of two opposite seasonal colour cycles in the coma and on the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko through its perihelion passage18. Spectral analysis indicates an enrichment of submicrometre grains made of organic material and amorphous carbon in the coma, causing reddening during the passage. At the same time, the progressive removal of dust from the nucleus causes the exposure of more pristine and bluish icy layers on the surface. Far from the Sun, we find that the abundance of water ice on the nucleus is reduced owing to redeposition of dust and dehydration of the surface layer while the coma becomes less red.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend glucocorticoids and splenectomy as standard 1(st) and 2(nd) line treatments for chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). We sought to find out how German ITP-patients are treated with respect to these guidelines. METHODS: Members of a patient support association ≥18 years with a self-reported history of chronic ITP>12 months were surveyed with a web-based questionnaire. RESULTS: 122 questionnaires were evaluated. 70% of patients had chronic ITP for more than 5 years and 20% an average platelet count of ≤30·10(9)/L. 41% of the patients reported haematomas or petechiae more than once or twice and up to 12 times or more per year and 17% oropharyngeal and nasal bleeds. 11% had been admitted to hospital during the last 12 months. 88% had received or currently receive glucocorticoids, 27% were splenectomised. IVIG had been given to 55%, rituximab to 22%, anti-D to 12%, ciclosporin to 7%, while complementary and alternative medical treatments had been used by 36%. 50 women responded to questions concerning pregnancy. 14 (28%) had been advised not to become pregnant. 23 reported pregnancies and 10 (44%) required treatment for their ITP during pregnancy. CONCLUSION: Glucocorticoids are the most common therapy for chronic ITP but complementary and alternative treatments already come second and less than ⅓ of patients are splenectomised. This and the frequent use of complementary medicines suggests patients' dissatisfaction with conventional approaches. Many patients receive off-label therapies. There is a major need for adequate counselling and care for pregnant ITP-patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The 1996 ASH guidelines recommend glucocorticoids and splenectomy as standard treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). We sought to find out how many German ITP-patients were treated according to these guidelines and whether high-cost treatments were offered to the patients. METHODS: We handed out a questionnaire at two self-help group meetings in 2004 and 2005 and to all patients who contacted the ITP self-help group until the end of 2005. RESULTS: Eighty-five questionnaires were evaluated. Age (median 34 yr) and gender distribution (38% male, 62% female) were similar to other surveys. Median duration of disease was 5.2 yr. Seventy-five percent had platelets <20,000/microL at the time of diagnosis. Twenty-four percent still had <20,000 platelets/microL at the time of this survey. Forty-two percent had oropharyngeal mucosal bleeds, 28% gastrointestinal or urological bleeds, 11% bleedings in the eye with visual impairment or intracerebral bleeds. 96% had received a trial of glucocorticoid therapy. Seventy-five percent of the patients treated with glucocorticoids perceived this treatment as particularly bothersome. Seventy-five percent of the patients with low platelet count still had their spleen. Complementary and alternative medical treatments had been used by 46% of the patients. Only 33% of the patients had ever heard of rituximab. CONCLUSION: Despite literature suggesting that patients wish to be well informed this survey shows that chronic ITP patients know little about their disease and the various treatment modalities. This and the frequent use of complementary and alternative medicines reflects inadequate communication between doctors and ITP patients.
