This study investigated the impact of soil type, pH, and geographical locations on the accumulation of arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in rice grains cultivated in Ghana. One hundred rice farms for the sampling of rice grains and soil were selected from two regions in Ghana-Volta and Oti. The concentrations of As, Pb, and Cd were analyzed using ICP-OES. Speciation modeling and multivariate statistics were employed to ascertain the relations among measured parameters. The results showed significant variations in soil-As, Pb, and Cd levels across different soil types and pH ranges, with the highest soil-As and Cd found in alkaline vertisols. For soil-As and Cd, the vertisols with a pH more than 7.0 exhibited the highest mean concentration of As (2.51 ± 0.932 mgkg-1) and Cd (1.00 ± 0.244 mgkg-1) whereas for soil-Pb, the luvisols of soil types with a pH less than 6.0 exhibited the highest mean concentration of Pb (4.91 ± 1.540 mgkg-1). Grain As, Pb, and Cd also varied across soil types and pH levels. In regards to grain-As, the vertisols soil type, with a pH less than 6.0, shows the highest mean concentration of grain As, at 0.238 ± 0.107 mgkg-1. Furthermore, vertisols soil types with a pH level less than 6.0 showed the highest mean concentration of grain Cd, averaging at 0.231 ± 0.068 mgkg-1 while luvisols, with a pH less than 6.0, exhibited the highest mean concentration of grain Pb at 0.713 ± 0.099 mgkg-1. Speciation modeling indicated increased bioavailability of grains Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions in acidic conditions. A significant interaction was found between soil-Cd and pH, affecting grain-As uptake. The average concentrations of soil As, Pb, and Cd aligned with international standards. Generally, the carcinogenic metals detected in grain samples collected from the Volta region are higher than that of the Oti region but the differences are insignificant, and this may be attributed to geographical differences and anthropogenic activities. About 51% of the study area showed a hazard risk associated with grain metal levels, although, no carcinogenic risks were recognized. This study highlights the complex soil-plant interactions governing metal bioaccumulation and emphasizes the need for tailored strategies to minimize metal transfer into grains.

This research provides a comprehensive analysis of groundwater pollution in the Lower Anayari Catchment (LAC) through δ2H and δ18O isotopic analysis, along with positive matrix factorization (PMF) and PCS-MLR receptor models. Forty groundwater samples were collected from hand-dug wells and equipped boreholes across the LAC. Flame photometry for Na+ and K+, complexometric titration for Ca2+, ion chromatography for Cl-, F-, NO3-, SO42-, and PO43-, and atomic absorption spectrometry for Mg2+, Fe, Pb, Cd, As, and Ni were analytical techniques/instruments employed. In regard to cations, Na+ has the highest average concentration of 63.0 mg/L, while Mg2+ has the lowest at 2.58 mg/L. Concerning the anions and nutrients, Cl- has the highest mean concentration of 18.7 mg/L, and Fl- has the lowest at 0.50 mg/L. Metalloids were detected in trace amount with Fe displaying the highest mean concentration of 0.077 mg/L whereas Cd and As recorded lowest (0.001 mg/L). The average values for groundwater δ18O and δ2H were - 3.64‰ and - 20.7‰, respectively; the average values for rainwater isotopic composition were - 3.41‰ for δ18O and - 17.4‰ for δ2H. It is believed that natural geological features, particularly biotite granitoid and volcanic flow/subvolcanic rocks from the Birimian Supergroup, significantly influence groundwater mineralisation. Additionally, the impact of anthropogenic activities on water quality, with urban development and agricultural practices, may be attributed to increasing levels of certain contaminants such as Fe, Ni, NO3-, and PO43-. This research contributes to the broader field of hydrological study and provides practical implications for managing and conserving water resources in similar contexts. The innovative combination of isotopic and statistical analyses sets a new standard for future studies in groundwater quality assessment, emphasising the need for comprehensive approaches that consider both geological characteristics and human impacts for sustainable water resource management.

Fresh produce continues to be the main source of foodborne illness outbreaks, particularly in developing countries where water stress results in the use of surface wastewater all year round for irrigation of vegetables. The objective of the current study was to evaluate the microbial quality of lettuce irrigated with wastewater from Onyasia river. Lettuce and soil were sampled from selected vegetable farms on the Eastern gate of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission land alongside surface wastewater from the Onyasia river, which is used as the main source for irrigation. Samples were analyzed for aerobic mesophilic plate counts, total coliforms count, fecal coliforms count, Salmonella counts and intestinal parasites using standard methods. Surface wastewater was found to be contaminated with mean fecal coliform counts of log 3.50 cfu/100 mL. Enterobacter cloacae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumonia were also isolated from the wastewater samples. No intestinal parasite egg was detected in wastewater samples. While fecal coliforms and Salmonella spp were not detected, mean aerobic mesophilic plate counts (log 4.82 cfu/g) and total coliforms count (log 3.50 cfu/g) were recorded in the lettuce samples. Enterobacter asburiae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella variicola and Citrobacter freundii were isolated from lettuce. Infective larvae of helminths were observed on lettuce samples at a density of 36/g-648/g with a mean of 342/g. Soil samples recorded a mean aerobic mesophilic plate counts of log 6.14 cfu/g, total coliforms count of log 4.90 cfu/g while fecal coliforms and Salmonella spp were not detected (<1 cfu/g) Soil samples yielded a mean infective larval count of 1941.5 larvae/g and a Strongyle count of 12 eggs/g. Even though less than 1 cfu/g of Salmonella spp were found, the study found lettuce to be contaminated with other foodborne bacteria pathogens, opportunistic bacteria pathogens, eggs and infective larvae of intestinal parasites of health importance. As a consequence, the microbial food safety risk associated with wastewater irrigated vegetables was observed to be high with possible public health implications. It is recommended that wastewater from the Onyasia River should be treated before use for irrigation of lettuce.

Elevated levels of pharmaceuticals, steroid hormones and xenoestrogens (PSHXEs) in the aquatic environment pose a serious threat to the ecological balance. The endocrine disrupting PSHXEs in aquatic systems are linked to several adverse effects like reproductive health impairment, feminization, high mortality rate, decreased biodiversity etc. This study, therefore, sought to investigate the occurrence and the ecological risks posed by some selected PSHXEs and also conduct source apportionment of the PSHXEs in the Ghanaian aquatic environments. A total of 48 samples comprising 24 sediments and water each were taken from six waterbodies in Ghana. The samples were extracted using SPE cartridges for water and QuEChERS-dSPE for sediments. The analyses were done using Shimadzu Prominence UFLC 20A series. Ecological risk assessments were also conducted with the aid of USEPA T.E.S.T., whereas source apportionments were conducted using the APCS-MLR receptor model. Elevated mean total levels of PSHXEs ranging between 12,187 and 52,117 ng/L and 2,022-6,047 ng/g for water and sediment samples respectively were found. The risk quotients (RQ > 1) suggested a high risk posed by PSHXEs in water to organisms at the three trophic levels and also to benthic organisms in sediments of the Ghanaian aquatic environments for a short-term period. The APCS-MLR receptor model suggested three statistically significant sources (p < 0.05) designated by signature PSHXEs as domestic (major), mix hospital and industrial and agricultural waste sources. The source apportionment suggested increased use of steroid estrogens and anabolic drugs among the Ghana populace.

Breast milk samples from 128 primipararae and multiparae Ghanaian women were screened for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from 2014 and 2016. These were breast milk from women residing or working around an electronic waste recycling site and a reference area (a residential area). This research is aimed at assessing PAHs levels in human milk samples from some Ghanaian mothers, prediction of the sources of these PAHs and the probable carcinogenic and mutagenic risks to infants. The aim of the study was to assess the levels of PCBs in the breast milk of some Ghanaian women at suspected hotspot and relatively non-hotspot areas and to find out if the levels of these PCBs pose any risk to the breastfed infants. A total of 128 individual human breast milk were sampled from both primiparae and multiparae mothers. The levels of PCBs in the milk samples were compared. Some of these mothers (105 individuals) work or reside in and around Agbogbloshie (hot-spot), the largest electric and electronic waste dump and recycling site in Accra, Ghana. Others (23 donor mothers) also reside in and around Kwabenya (non-hotspot) which is a mainly residential area without any industrial activities. Samples were analyzed using GC-MS/MS. The total mean levels and range of Σ7PCBs were 3.64ng/glipidwt and ˂LOD-29.20ng/glipidwt, respectively. Mean concentrations from Agbogbloshie (hot-spot area) and Kwabenya (non-hotspot areas) were 4.43ng/glipidwt and 0.03ng/glipidwt, respectively. PCB-28 contributed the highest of 29.5% of the total PCBs in the milk samples, and PCB-101 contributed the lowest of 1.74%. The estimated daily intake of PCBs and total PCBs concentrations in this work were found to be lower as compared to similar studies across the world. The estimated hazard quotient using Health Canada's guidelines threshold limit of 1µg/kgbw/day showed no potential health risk to babies. However, considering minimum tolerable value of 0.03µg/kgbw/day defined by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), the values of some mothers were found to be at the threshold limit. This may indicate a potential health risk to their babies. Mothers with values at the threshold levels of the minimum tolerable limits are those who work or reside in and around the Agbogbloshie e-waste site.
