RESUMO

In this work we propose a facile method of preparing cost-effective clay-metaloxide/metal (CuO/Ag and ZnO/Ag) composite pellets for an efficient water purification technique. Clay, with intrinsic antibacterial activity, served as a membrane support for different metaloxide/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) concentrations (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.%), as the active fillers. The effect of time (24 and 48 h) on the bactericidal activity of these pellets was also monitored. The clay-nanocomposite pellets were characterized using: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry and nitrogen desorption analysis. The antibacterial activity performance was tested using E. coli and S. aureus strains of ATCC25922 and ATCC25923, respectively, in two aqueous media (nutrient broth and nutrient-free) by the colony-forming unit method. The results showed that the clay-CuO/Ag composite with a bandgap (1.24 eV) exhibited overall best performance under all conditions and time factors of ~100% efficiency in nutrient-free medium for all concentrations and times and 20-40% efficiency in nutrient broth for 24 h. The clay-ZnO/Ag with a bandgap of 2.88 eV showed no bactericidal activity in both media, except for that with 10 wt.% ZnO/Ag which showed 100% efficiency in nutrient-free medium after 24 h. All the synthesized composites showed 100% bactericidal efficiency in nutrient free medium after 48 h. These results indicate that, the clay/metaloxide/Ag could serve as efficient water purification technique, with a potential for large-scale commercialization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Global evidence has shown significant contribution of Antenatal care (ANC) in the detection and treatment of pregnancy related complications. Over the years, many areas in Ghana have recorded high uptake of ANC. However, this is not the case for Binduri district in Northern Ghana where only 37.4% of pregnant women utilised the services of ANC during their period of pregnancy compared to a national figure of 87%. We therefore sought to explore the determinants of ANC uptake among women who failed to utilise ANC services during their period of pregnancy in Binduri District in Northern Ghana. METHODOLOGY: The study was an exploratory descriptive study using purposive sampling technique. A total of 15 women who met the inclusion criteria for the study were recruited for a face-to-face interview. The data were analysed using the procedure of inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The study findings showed that several factors hindered the use of ANC among our participants. The individual factors that were responsible for nonutilisation of ANC included financial constraints hindering registration with the national health insurance scheme, excuses of being busy, perception that pregnancy was not sickness and concentration on work. Perceived poor attitude of nurses was the only health system factor that contributed to non utilisation of ANC services. CONCLUSION: There is the need for establishment of registration centres of the national health insurance in all communities to make the scheme more accessible. There should also be intensive public education on importance of attending ANC.

RESUMO

Global evidence suggests that hepatitis B viral (HBV) infection is endemic in Africa and perinatal transmission remains one of the most important modes of HBV transmission in this area. This cross-sectional survey examined the seroprevalence and knowledge of hepatitis B among pregnant women attending antenatal clinic (ANC) in a mission hospital in Ghana. Systematic sampling technique was used to recruit 196 pregnant women. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05 alpha level. The hepatitis B prevalence estimate (hepatitis B surface antigen) was 10.2% (N = 20) and all of the participants were aware of HBV infection. Majority cited media (radio) as their main source of information. Approximately 86% of the participants (N = 168) associated HBV infection with a curse and 88.8% (N = 174) indicated witches and wizards as possible causes of the infection. Those with higher level of school education had high hepatitis B knowledge score (P < 0.01). Implementation of a health education program on the route of hepatitis B transmission is required in the study setting. Also, inclusion of hepatitis B education as part of ANC activities will enable HBV-positive pregnant women to appreciate the need for hepatitis B vaccination of their newborns at birth.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mother -to -Child transmission of hepatitis B infection remains a major public health concern particularly in Africa. Adequate knowledge of physicians and midwives is crucial in averting most of the hepatitis B viral transmissions from mothers to their new-borns. However, there is a dearth of evidence on extent of knowledge of physicians and midwives in Ghana inspite of the increasing incidence of hepatitis B infection in the country. This study therefore assessed the knowledge level of physicians and midwives regarding Mother-to-Child transmission of hepatitis B in the Eastern region of Ghana. METHODS: A Cross sectional survey was conducted between August to November, 2015 using semi-structured self-administered questionnaire. Study participants were recruited from five health facilities and their level of awareness and knowledge about Mother-to-Child transmission of hepatitis B were assessed. The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05 alpha level. RESULTS: The findings showed that both physicians and midwives had good knowledge on Mother-to-Child transmission of hepatitis B infection. However, there were some knowledge gaps regarding effective hepatitis B prevention from mother to their newborns such as the use of hepatitis B vaccine and immunoglobulin. Additionally, 49.2 % (n = 62) of the participants had never attended any workshop on Mother-to-Child transmission of hepatitis B since completion of formal training. CONCLUSIONS: Developing appropriate periodic training programmes on current issues of hepatitis B for physicians and midwives in Eastern region will further enhance their knowledge. It is recommended that, further study examine if the knowledge of the respondents is translated into practice.
